President Buhari Orders More Solar Cells Be Produced For Nation’s Alternative Source Of Power

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to produce more solar cells to boost the alternative power sources in the country.

Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Prof. Mohammed Haruna, made this known to State House correspondents after briefing the president on the activities of the Agency in Abuja.

Newsmen report that Buhari is the Chairman of NASENI.

According to Haruna, the president also directed the implementation of modular irrigation project and the production of more farm implements, to boost agricultural activities.

He said: “The President is impressed that NASENI is delivering on its mandate. I gave him the usual quarterly briefing and he is happy with what we have done in this quarter.

“Therefore, he has directed us to do more, particularly in the modular irrigation project that we are commencing form Adamawa State, the solar cells production and also agricultural implements. ”

The NASENI boss informed Journalists that the agency has been able to impact the power sector, leading to the establishment of a factory in Karshi, Abuja.

According to him, the factory has the capacity to produce 7.5 megawatt of solar energy.

“Through our research and development activities in solar, it is so successful that through local innovations we now have a factory, 7.5 megawatt capacity Limited Liability Company.

“The company is 100 per cent owned by government in Karshi-Abuja, producing solar modules of highest quality.

“These modules are installed in many places, we have dealers who buy these and distribute and we participate in installations in private and government buildings.

“7.5 megawatts cannot meet the needs of the nation and that is not making the price of solar power affordable because the cells used are imported.

“Solar cells are products of silicon and silicon is obtained from silica, which is nothing other than the sand that we have abandoned,’’ he said.

He said this informed the president’s approval for the Agency to obtain the facility from China in order to achieve 100 per cent made in Nigeria products.

Dala Inland Dry Port Kano Approved As Port For Import, Export By President Buhari

0

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has declared Dala Inland Dry Port, Kano as port of origin for export of goods and final destination for products brought into the country through her seaports.

Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, while making the declaration in Kano disclosed that the epoch making event was granted approval by the Federal Executive Council as part of government’s reform program to promote efficient transportation, decongest the seaports and bring shipping and ports services closer to importers and exporters.

“In today’s new global economy, speed to the markets with finished goods, lower shipping costs are the main drivers more than ever before”, he said.

On why the project was located in Kano, Sambo said: “The importance of Kano state as the commercial capital of northern Nigeria with huge agricultural trade and export volume is well documented.

“The state has a sizeable number of textile and agro-allied industries, assembly plants amongst others and several manufacturing industries. It is not only suited but most qualified”, he added.

He called on shipping companies, maritime players, land-locked countries like Chad, Niger and other port users to take full advantage of the Dala IDP for import and export of their cargoes.

Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gowuna, noted that the Dala port marks the process of harnessing the potentials that abound in the state as Kano remains the largest non-oil and gas economy in the country with a Gross Domestic Product of USD $12 billion driven largely by commerce, manufacturing and subsistence agriculture.

Electric Buses: Energy Firm Partners Lagos State Ministry Of Transportation For 2030 Launch

Oando Clean Energy says it will be partnering with the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation to roll out 3,000 electric buses by 2030.

The Executive Vice President Oando Clean Energy, Mr Ademola Odunbanjo, disclosed this at the ninth edition of the Lagos Climate Change Summit in Lagos, South-west, Nigeria.

The two-day event was titled: “Integrating Climate Actions in Lagos State Development: Investment Opportunities and Trade-offs.”

Odunbanjo spoke on the topic: De-carbonising Industries/Mobility via Innovative Clean Energy.

He said that Oando would be experimenting on different energy mix to come out with an affordable green energy for consumers, mobility and industry.

According to him, buses that are powered with hydrogen will not be profitable.

“Not as the fares that we pay today. They’re not cost effective.

“And we also can’t pass it on to the consumer.

“So we will roll out about five hydrogen powered buses when the plants are ready.

It will run at a loss we know, but we’ll do it still anyway, because we must prove the concept and attract investment, particularly development funds.

Odubanjo said that statistics showed that before 2020, industries contributed 40 per cent to Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, while transportation contributed about 17 per cent.

Land Remediation: Nigeria Partners World Bank

He said that the ministry had commenced discussion on the establishment of National Institute of Environmental Studies, to provide ideas in addressing environmental challenges.

According to him, Nigeria has also assumed the leadership of the Pan African Great Green Wall (PAGGW), and that the essence is to address land degradation in the country.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari was elected as the President of the Conference of Heads of State and Government for a two year term.

“Accordingly, Mr President is driving the funding initiative under the Great Green Wall (GGW) accelerator to fund each country’s priorities.

“Closely aligned to the objectives of the PAGGW is the need for a robust tree planting campaign.

“The president launched the campaign on the sidelines of the PAGGW Council of Ministers Meeting on June 16.

“States are encouraged to drive their tree planting campaign so that collectively we can meet the 25 million trees target by 2023.

“There is no better time to reset our relation with nature than now,” he said.

Abdullahi said that the world was being confronted with enormous environmental challenges.

He called for urgent collective step-up action by everyone, irrespective of social status, religion, political leaning for drastic restoration of natural ecosystem.

The minister gave assurance that the government would continue to provide every necessary support required to ensure a successful journey to net-zero emission.

“Government is committed to ensure that we all live in harmony with nature and brighter hope of sustainable development,” he said.

Elon Musk on Saturday challenged Twitter Chief Executive Officer Parag Agrawal to a public debate about the percentage of bots on the social media platform.

“Let him prove to the public that Twitter has

He also started a poll asking users whether less than 5% of Twitter daily users are fake/spam.

Twitter on Thursday dismissed a claim by Musk that he was hoodwinked into signing a $44 billion agreement to buy the company.

Musk filed a countersuit against Twitter on July 29, escalating his legal fight against the company over his bid to walk away from the purchase agreement.

Earlier on Saturday, Musk said that if Twitter could provide its method of sampling 100 accounts and how it confirmed that the accounts are real, his deal to buy the company should proceed on its original terms.

Indian Billionaire Set To Launch Airline

0

As jet fuel prices are sky-high, and aviation is a notoriously fickle industry, a billionaire dubbed “India’s Warren Buffett” is launching an airline on Sunday.

Co-founding Akasa Air was a rare departure into entrepreneurship for Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, who made his fortune on the stock exchange as a value share investor and is often compared to the Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO.

The 62-year-old’s entry into the capital-intensive sector has raised eyebrows, with many pointing to the chequered history of billionaire-backed airlines in India as well as the daunting global economic outlook.

“A lot of people question why I’ve started an airline. Rather than answer them, I say I’m prepared for failure,” the billionaire said at an industry event in February.

“It’s better to have tried and failed than not tried at all.”

Several such ventures have failed in recent years.

And for Jhunjhunwala the challenge is personal: “I hope to prove people wrong,” he said. “Now it’s become a matter of ego.”

Exploring Middelgrunden, A National Symbol Of Green, Pure Energy In Denmark

0

Middelgrunden is an offshore wind farm, which is located Øresund Sound, some 4 km (2 mi) off the capital city of the Kingdom of Denmark, Copenhagen.

Becoming a national symbol of green and pure energy, it is one of the most famous farms worldwide as there are plenty of people who would like to get as much close as possible and get the best photographs. Initiated as a project by the Copenhagen Environment and Energy Office (CEEO) in 1996, the chosen location was somewhat opposed by the Danish Society for Nature Conservation, however, later this decision was changed.

As the wind often flows briskly and smoothly over water since there are no obstructions, this was the perfect location for the 20 wind turbines to be built, which now 10 are owned by DONG Energy, while the other 10 are owned by Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Cooperative.

The wind turbines have been built on a concrete gravity base foundations, as it was the cheapest option at that time, and all of them are put in one straight line in order to get the best of the wind, without one to obstruct the other one.

Each turbine has the capacity of 2 megawatts, all together creating 40 megawatts of clean energy, and as they rise 102 meters (335 feet) above the water, they can be seen even from Copenhagen.

Operating most of the time at full capacity, they deliver 4% of Copenhagen’s power, which brings the production of clean energy and wind power to the highest possible level within the small kingdom in the north of Europe.

South Korea’s Spacecraft En Route Moon As 1st Lunar Orbiter Is Launched

0

August 5th is now a historic day for South Korea.

Particularly for its deep space exploration, as its first homegrown lunar orbiter, Danuri has successfully blasted off to space.

“Danuri successfully separated from its carrier rocket at around 8:48 am.

It’s now on its way to lunar orbit.

I’m very glad that South Korea has successfully made its first step toward the moon.”

And this is how it all happened.

Danuri’s journey began with the launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

At exactly 8:08 AM, Korea timeit soared up to the sky on board SpaceX’s Falcon 9 carrier rocket.

Then at around 9 AM, officials said it made it 1-thousand 6-hundred 55 kilometers away from earth.

That’s where it separated from the rocket it was attached to.
It detached at speeds of 10.1-5 kilometers per second at an altitude of 7-hundred 3 kilometers.

Then, at around 9:40 AM, researchers at Korea Aerospace Research Institute heard some great news.

Danuri reportedly made contact with NASA’s deep space antenna in Canberra Australia.

It had opened its solar panels for the power needed to send a signal to the ground station on Earth.

The connection was made successfully, so now we’re heading for the third stage which will happen overnight.

The ground station will position Danuri so that it faces antennas on Earth.

They will also be activating different devices on the orbiter.

Then on Sunday, it will be getting ready to enter a trajectory that will take it to its target orbit.

It will take some time though.
We’ll have to wait another four months before it actually gets near the moon.

By December 16th, Danuri will finally enter lunar orbit.
It will go in circles around the moon until it reaches an orbit of 100 kilometers above the lunar surface.

Officials believe it will be around late December when the KPLO reaches this point and is then ready to conduct a range of studies for a whole year.
