Lewandowski Unveiled As New Barca No. 9

0

Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski, has been unveiled to the Barcelona fans at the Camp Nou on Friday

Lewandowski was presented as Barcelona’s new No.9 following his €50 million (£42m/$51m) transfer from Bayern Munich.

The European highest goal scorer has inherited the iconic jersey from Memphis Depay, who has been linked with a Camp Nou exit following Lewandowski’s transfer.

Lewandowski turns 34 later this month but dismissed any suggestion that his best years are behind him at his first press conference at Barca’s stadium on Thursday, even though he didn’t hit the net for the club in pre-season.

“I think my age is not important right now, it’s just a number. I feel better than when I was 29,” he said.

He added, “I know that Barcelona was not going through an easy time, but when I spoke with Joan and heard about the project and the way they wanted to follow, I thought that the best thing was to make the jump to Barcelona.”

He also spoke on the rivalry with La Liga champions Real Madrid.

“I’m not thinking about Real Madrid or Benzema, he’s an extraordinary striker, but for me, the most important thing is to win with Barcelona, not to beat him,” he said.

Ever-present African representatives Nigeria departed the shores of the country on Thursday evening for this year’s U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

Coach Christopher Danjuma picked team captain Oluwatosin Demehin and 20 others – an overwhelming majority of whom were involved in the lengthy qualifying series – to wear Nigeria’s colours at the 19-day championship.

The Falconets had to scale the hurdles presented by Central African Republic, Congo, Cameroon and Senegal, winning six of seven matches (they only drew with Cameroon in Douala) to be eligible to fly Africa’s flag once more at the finals in Central America.

Nigeria will play France, Canada and Korea in Group C of the 16-nation, which beginsAugust 10, while 2018 runners-up Spain tango with hosts Costa Rica, Australia and Brazil in Group A. Africa’s other representatives Ghana are up against holders Japan, The Netherlands and three-time champions United States in Group D.

Germany, who have also won the competition three times, including 2010 and 2014 when they beat Nigeria in the final, will play Colombia, New Zealand and Mexico in Group B.

All group phase and quarter-final matches will be played at the Alejandro Morera Soto, which is a hybrid of natural and synthetic grass called stitched grass. The semi-final, final and third place matches will take place at the Estadio Nacional.

Nigeria’s first match of the competition will be against France, hosts of the 2018 edition. At the 2014 championship in Canada, Nigeria topped a group that had Korea, who they beat 2-1. France finished in third place at the same competition as Nigeria finished as runners-up.

Saint-Gervais Mayor Threatens €15,000 Deposit To Climb Mont Blanc

0

A French mayor says conditions on Mont Blanc are now so dangerous that climbers should pay a €15,000 (£12,640; $15,370) deposit to cover rescue and possible funeral costs.

Jean-Marc Peillex is mayor of Saint-Gervais, a village at the foot of Western Europe’s highest mountain, whose summit is at 4,807m (15,774ft).

Those who ignored warnings and took the Goûter route up the mountain were playing “Russian roulette”, he said.

The heatwave has increased rockfalls.

Mayor Peillex said the average cost of a rescue on the mountain was €10,000 and funeral costs were €5,000. “It is unacceptable for the French taxpayer to cover those costs,” he said in a press release.

His statement on the village’s official website noted that mountain guides were now refusing to take climbers on the popular Goûter route – also known as the Royal Way – from Saint-Gervais or the nearby Alpine resort of Chamonix. Their decision is in force until mid-August at the earliest.

Mayor Peillex castigated some “pseudo climbers” who insisted on attempting the climb “with death in their backpacks”.

He told the newsmen “I wanted to make people react, to understand that today it’s very dangerous, almost suicidal to go up”.

He has closed until further notice the mountain refuges at Goûter and Tête Rousse because of rockfalls.

He said a group of Romanians were found on the mountain on 30 July wearing shorts and trainers. A police helicopter ordered them through a loudhailer to turn back, he said, “and while they did so, they said they would return the next day”!

Exploring Mount Roraima Guyana, One Of Oldest Geological Formations On Earth

0

Mount Roraima is an easily recognizable plateau mountain that is also known as Tepuy Roraima, Monte Roraima and Cerro Roraima, and serves as a triple border point of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.

Being part of the Pakaraima mountain range, the Maverick Rock which is part of Mount Roraima is considered as the highest point in Guyana standing at height of 2,810 meters (9,220 feet) above the sea, with the greater part of the mountain, more precisely 85%, belonging to Venezuela, while Guyana has 10% and Brazil has only 5%.

Roraima is also part of the Canaima National Park in Venezuela, and as the triple border is located at 5°12′08″N 60°44′07″W, it is visited by plenty of people coming from all sides.

Considered to be some of the oldest geological formations on Earth, dating back to over 2 billion years ago, this very unconventional mountain has sheer high cliffs that are 400 meters (1,312 feet) tall which are desirable for the very experienced climbers.

Nevertheless, there is a path up the mountain’s natural ramp-like path in order to reach the plateau, which usually takes two days to complete. Along the extensive hike, one can encounter very rich flora such as pitcher plants and the rare Rapatea heather, where with the constant rain the entire mountain, where plants can grow, is always green.

Still, almost the entire surface of the summit is bare sandstone with some bushes and algae being present, nevertheless, the small, sandy marshes that intersperse the rocky summit can uncover some low scanty and bristling vegetation.

Roraima has a special significance for the indigenous people of the region, as they have all kinds of stories, myths and legends for this alluring place.

The first person to have described Roraima from his travels was from the English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, who in 1596 searched for the legendary city of El Dorado, however, he was unable to climb to the high plateau.

It was up until 1884, when Sir Everard im Thurn together with Harry Inniss Perkins and several Guyanese natives successfully walked up a forested ramp and scaled the vast plateau.

Since then, all of the hikers who would like to climb too, are taking the same approach and they are all experiencing everything what Sir Everard im Thurn encountered.

This heavenly remote landscape of jungle and cliffs is certainly one of the world’s most known places, as it was featured in the animation movie “Up”, and it also was the inspiration for the novel which was written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Lost World.
