Chelsea are close to completing a shock move for Aston Villa’s Carney Chukwuemeka.
Chukwuemeka has less than a year left on his current deal at Villa Park.
It is understood the 18-year-old had no intention of discussing a new contract with the Midlands club and could now be set to join the Blues.
A terse tweet on Aston Villa’s official Twitter handle confirmed the player will now travel to London to finalize the transfer.
“Aston Villa and Chelsea can confirm that the clubs have reached an agreement for the permanent transfer of Carney Chukwuemeka,” it read.
“The 18-year-old has been given permission to travel to London to discuss both personal terms and undergo a medical.”
Chukwuemeka made 12 Premier League appearances last season but only started two games and it is understood he is keen to get more top flight-game time.
According to transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, Malang Sarr is very close to signing for Monaco.
Romano tweeted: “AS Monaco are in negotiations with Chelsea for Malang Sarr. Ligue1, fav destination for the player despite the proposal received from Fulham – as reported in the morning.”
Watford forward Emmanuel Dennis has refused to rule out leaving the Hornets amid interest from a number of Premier League clubs.
Dennis has been linked with the likes of Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, and West Ham United following Watford’s relegation from the Premier League.
The Nigerian international scored 10 goals and recorded six assists in 33 league appearances for the London club last season.
Watford’s £20m valuation of the player has potential suitors off.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Dennis put up an impressive display in Monday night’s 1-0 win against Sheffield United.
“I enjoyed the game (against Sheffield United), we won the game, so I’m happy,” Dennis said.
“I’m still a player of the team so I just do my job and we’ll see what happens.”
The 23-year-old joined Watford from Belgian Pro League champions, Club Brugge for £3m last summer.
The Secretariat of the Nigeria Women Football League has declared the purported NWFL Club Owners Association as an illegal body, adding the body is not a statutory recognised body by the Statutes governing the game.
The Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Women Football League, Modupe Shabi, in a signed letter to the clubs, disclosed that, the club owners was earlier accepted as a valuable link between the NWFL Secretariat and the clubs.
The letter continued: “I am directed by the Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League in response to the letter dated 22nd July 2022, purportedly from the Club Owners Association of the Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL, Informed the NWFL Secretariat of election into offices of its Executive Council. In the light of the possible abuses of the relationship, the NWFL wishes to inform all the clubs.
“While the Club Owners Association is not a statutorily recognised body, by the Statutes governing the game, it was a valuable link between the NWFL and the clubs.
“In the light of the possible abuses of the relationship, the NWFL wishes to inform the clubs of the cessation of any dealings with the Club Owners Association with immediate effect.
“The NWFL Secretariat will henceforth deal with the clubs directly. Please ignore any correspondence from any individuals, group or body claiming to act on behalf of the clubs in your dealings with the NWFL.
“This position has become necessary following developments that could be inimical to sustaining the gains of the women’s game,” the statement added.
Reigning African Games and African Championships champion, Chioma Onyekwere saved her best for the last major competition of the year to make history as the first Nigerian woman to win the Commonwealth Games gold in the Discus Throw event.
Onyekewere, 28, threw 61.70m in her fourth attempt to take the lead from home girl, Jade Lally who led from the start of the competition with her opening throw of 57.33m.
The Nigerian who opened with 55.82m knew she needed more than the 58.19m she threw to win the African Championships gold last June in Mauritius.
She responded without success in the second round with a 56.42m effort, fouled the third attempt before swinging the discus to a personal season’s best mark of 61.70m, her second best career mark after the 63.30m personal best she threw last year at the CVEATC, Chula Vista in California, USA.
Team Nigeria made further history by producing two medallists in the Discus Throw event for the first time with reigning Nigerian champion, Obiageri Amaechi winning the bronze medal with her 56.99m fifth round effort.
Onyekwere has now become the second Nigerian after Adewale Olukoju to win the Discus Throw title for Nigeria in the history of the championships.
lukoju threw 62.62m to win in Aukcland in 1990.
All focus will now shift to the men and women 100m semifinal on Wednesday, the men’s high jump and the women’s shot put final.
Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay submitted a joint bid on Tuesday to host the 2030 World Cup, an effort that if successful would bring the global tournament back to Uruguay a century after it hosted the first World Cup in 1930.
“This is the dream of a continent,” said Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL).
“There will be more World Cups, but the Cup only turns 100 one time, and it needs to come home,” Dominguez said in an event at Montevideo’s Centenario Stadium, where Uruguay defeated Argentina to win the first ever World Cup.
Argentina and Chile have since also hosted the games, in 1978 and 1962, respectively.
“It’s just for the World Cup to be hosted where it all began 100 years later,” Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan Football Association, told reporters.
Dominguez said there are “more than sufficient” reasons for FIFA to accept the four countries’ single candidacy. The 2030 World Cup will follow the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
For now, the South American countries’ top competition appears to come from Spain and Portugal, which last month submitted a joint bid to host the tournament.
A Paediatrician, Dr. Faidat Yusuf, has cautioned nursing mothers against laying flat on their backs while breastfeeding their babies, noting that doing so could result in harmful health effects.
The expert warned that breastfeeding in this position is inappropriate, adding that it puts the infant at risk of major health problems such as aspiration, lung infections, ear infections as well as sudden infant death syndrome.
According to the child care expert, a baby is supposed to be propped up while being breastfed and not laid flat on their back.
She further added that a mother should rather sit comfortably in a chair, and carry the child in a propped-up position.
The mother, she explained, can use a pillow for support and tilt the baby towards the breast to feed to avoid putting the child’s health at risk.
Speaking with PUNCH Healthwise in an interview, Dr. Yusuf who works at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital explained saying, “It is very common to see a mother feeding her child while laying down because it is convenient for them that way.
“However, feeding the child in that position though convenient for the mother can sometimes be at a disadvantage and can be detrimental to the health of the child.
“The major problem that could occur from this would be the risk of aspiration. Aspiration means the food leaving the stomach, flowing through the gullet, and then going back into the lungs, this then results in breast milk being present in the lungs.
Breastfeeding while lying down
“The main function of the lungs is the exchange of oxygen and when breast milk is present there, it will impair its function, resulting in difficulty in breathing and also exposing the child to lung infections.”
“Newborns’ gastrointestinal tracts are relatively immature, so it is very easy for them to aspirate the content of their stomach when they are laying down flat, So we do not usually recommend that a child is breastfed while laying down, “she stressed.
Dr. Yusuf further added that another major health disadvantage an infant could experience is the increased risk of ear infections.
She said, “Children that are breastfed while laying down have a high risk of having ear infections. It is called otitis media which is an infection of the midway air.
“They can develop a mid-way ear infection, have a fever and sometimes, discharge may come out of their ears which could be detrimental to them.”
The health expert also stressed that there is the possibility of the mother falling asleep while breastfeeding which could result in sudden infant death syndrome.
“When a mother is asleep, the child is unsupervised. The mother could accidentally roll over and unknowingly suffocate the child, as a result of this, it is advisable to avoid breastfeeding a child while laying down as much as possible,” she warned.
Dr. Yusuf further highlighted the importance of society, as well as both the immediate and extended family to render support and help to breastfeeding mothers, noting that they are always exhausted, noting that the exhaustion could lead to them breastfeeding inappropriately.
She stated, “If they are supported and people help them manage their stress, that way they’re healthier, happier and they have more energy and time to commit to breastfeeding their child the appropriate way to avoid problems.”
The paediatrician added, “The recommended position for mothers is to sit in a comfortable chair, lean back and then sometimes use a pillow for support and hold up the child in a propped up position, carry the child towards the breast and feed the child that way.
“When the child is propped up, you are preventing the risk of aspiration and it is comfortable for the mother because she can rest her back and relax, and then she is less likely to sleep off while breastfeeding.
“It will also reduce the risk of SIDS and ear infections occurring to the child,” she said.
According to a study titled ‘Breast Feeding Practice: Positioning and Attachment during Breast Feeding Health Facility in Areka Town, Southern Ethiopia’, the positioning of the baby’s body is important for maintaining good attachment and successful breastfeeding.
The study conducted in 2017 but published in 2019 in the International Journal of Pediatrics used an observational checklist adopted from the World Health Organisation breastfeeding observation form.
The study authors in their findings said mothers, especially young mothers, and those who had no formal education deserve more attention, support, and direction to make sure that they can effectively breastfeed their baby.
“Healthcare facilities should stress the need for updated training for healthcare providers to improve their skills of providing breastfeeding counseling and education during antenatal and postnatal follow-up.
“It would also be better if mothers are demonstrated with skills of proper attachment and positioning then observed by the healthcare provider while they breastfeed their baby on immediate postnatal care and given feedback on their performance to achieve proper attachment and positioning,” the study authors wrote.
A man allegedly found with a crossbow in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Christmas Day has been charged under the Treason Act.
Jaswant Singh Chail, 20, has also been charged with threats to kill and possession of an offensive weapon.
Mr Chail, from Southampton, is in custody and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 17 August.
The charges were brought after an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command.
Mr Chail was arrested at about 08:30 GMT on Christmas Day. The Met said he was stopped “within moments” of entering the grounds and he did not enter any buildings.
He has been charged with an offence under section 2 of the 1842 Treason Act, namely “discharging or aiming firearms, or throwing or using any offensive matter or weapon, with intent to injure or alarm her Majesty”, said Scotland Yard.
The Queen had been staying at Windsor Castle for Christmas, rather than spending it as usual on her Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
Her Majesty was due to be joined for lunch by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
Under the 1842 Treason Act, it is an offence to assault the Queen, or have a firearm or offensive weapon in her presence with intent to injure or alarm her or to cause a breach of peace.
In 1981, Marcus Sarjeant was jailed for five years under the section of the Treason Act after he fired blank shots at the Queen while she was riding down The Mall in London during the Trooping the Colour parade.
Schneider Electric has partnered with Ikeja Electric (IE) to improve electricity distribution in its network in south-west Lagos and Ogun States.
The collaboration according to both companies would address common problems faced by electricity distribution companies in the country, namely the lack of traceability when faults occur on the network, leading to extended period of outages.
Schneider noted that the partnership is the first step towards setting up a digitized grid, starting with smart transformers.
Speaking on the partnership in Lagos, Ikeja Electric, Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Folake Soetan, said: “This partnership exemplifies Ikeja Electric’s desire to leverage innovation and technology to improve customer experience, so it is driven largely with interest of customers at the heart of our business.
“We are delighted to partner with Schneider Electric on this project as it becomes imperative that we adopt a more strategic approach in managing our network.
“The introduction of smart Distribution Transformers will not only assist in drastically reducing downtime, but it will also further drive efficiency as we are able to better manage and maintain our network proactively. The digitization is in line with our mantra, Customer First, Technology Now.”
The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has said that one of the major obstacles to housing delivery in Nigeria is access to mortgage finance.
He said this in Abuja at the opening of the Board/Management Retreat of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) themed: ”Strategy Repositing for Optimised Performance, Organisational Culture Change and Informal Sector Integration’’
The minister noted that in order to address housing delivery challenges in Nigeria, access to mortgage finance needs to be addressed.
Mr Gbeleyi noted that in order to bridge the gap, states should be encouraged to put in place foreclosure laws through their States Houses of Assembly, adding that only Lagos and Kaduna states had enacted their foreclosure laws.
