Kenya Orders Facebook To Tackle Hate Speech

0

Kenya has given Meta’s Facebook seven days to tackle hate speech and incitement on the platform relating to next month’s election, failing which its operations will be suspended.

Advocacy group Global Witness said in a report published on Thursday that Facebook had accepted and carried more than a dozen political advertisements that breached Kenya’s rules.

Kenya’s National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) said the report corroborates its own internal findings.

East Africa’s biggest economy is campaigning ahead of presidential, legislative and local authorities elections on Aug. 9.

An NCIC commissioner Danvas Makori said that Facebook is in violation of the laws of our country. They have allowed themselves to be a vector of hate speech and incitement, misinformation and disinformation.

Makori said The NCIC has held talks with the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), which regulates social media firms, and it will recommend the suspension of Meta’s operations.

He accused Meta of violating Kenya’s constitution and laws governing hate speech and the use of social media platforms.

However, a Company spokesperson told News reporters that Meta has taken “extensive steps” to weed out hate speech and inflammatory content, and it is intensifying those efforts ahead of the election.

Supporters of the leading presidential candidates, veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga and deputy president William Ruto, have used social media platforms to praise their candidates, persuade others to join them or to accuse opposing sides of various misdeeds.

Ramaphosa Insists Officials Must Step Down If Charged

0

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa says the ruling party African National Congress (ANC) had decided to retain its rule that anyone charged with corruption or other crimes must step down while they are being investigated.

Ramaphosa was speaking at the conclusion of a three-day national policy conference which brought together ANC delegates nationally for the first time in five years.

Many ANC members, especially those loyal to former President Jacob Zuma, currently being investigated for corruption, want the rule scrapped, claiming it was being used to persecute political opponents.

Scrapping the rule would have allowed potential challengers to vie against him for the ANC ticket in 2024 presidential elections – especially Ace Magashule, who was suspended as party secretary general last year after being charged with corruption.

Ramaphosa has taken a harder line on corruption since taking over as ANC leader in December 2017 and removing the rule also would have allowed several Zuma allies in various local governments to resume office.

Ramaphosa himself faces a police investigation of his finances after thieves stole $4 million from his farm in June, and his opponents are hoping to use this to unseat him.

If he is charged with any irregularity – such as failing to declare the money to tax authorities or violating exchange controls – then he himself might be forced to step aside.

Ramaphosa says the money was proceeds from sales of game animals on the farm, and has welcomed the investigation.

The party will chose its candidate at the end of this year.

The double header fixtures will now come up in March 2023.

Umoafia Joseph has won Nigeria’s second medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The 18-year-old clinched bronze in the men’s 67kg weightlifting event on Sunday.

In the snatch category, he scored no lift in his first two attempts but his final haul of 130kg pushed him ahead in the log.

In the clean and jerk category, his first lift of 150kg was bettered his third attempt of 160kg, which overrode his second lift mistake.

Lalrinnunga Jeremy of India took the gold medal with a combined lift of 300kg which is the game’s record. Vaipava Ioane of Samoa finished with the silver medal.

Umoafia’s bronze is Nigeria’s second medal at the games after Olarinoye Adijat had won gold in the women’s 55kg weightlifting event.

In table tennis, Nigeria’s men’s team progressed into the semi-final after a 3-2 defeat of Malaysia in the quarter-final.

The Nigerian contingent came from behind to defeat the Asians after the duo of Bode Abiodun and Olajide Omotayo lost the first game 3-1.

Aruna Quadri levelled the match with a 3-1 victory over Mas Leong before Abiodun lost to Mas Wong in the third game.

However, Quadri and Omotayo scored identical 3-1 victories over their opponents in the fourth and fifth games to book a place in the last four.

The semi-final is billed for Monday at 7 pm.

Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey Sent Off On Ajax Debut

Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey did not have the most auspicious of starts for Ajax as he was sent off in the 3-5 defeat to PSV during the Johan Cruijff Shield game on Saturday.

Bassey moved to the Dutch side from Glasgow Rangers in a record £18.7m transfer fee to end his stay at Ibrox becoming the most expensive Nigerian defender in history.

The 24-year-old came on for his debut in the 62nd minute to replace left-back Owen Wijndal who assisted Steven Bergwijn to score on his debut against his former side for the opening goal.

16 minutes following his introduction into the match, he was handed his marching orders in the 78th minute for a poor challenge on Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari leaving his team in the lurch with the score at 4-2 to PSV.

Following his red card, Mohammed Kudus pulled one back for the Dutch champions to give Ajax fans a glimmer of hope.

However, Ajax would eventually fall to the numbers as teenage sensation Xavi Simons also making his debut scored the fifth for PSV in the 91st minute to put the game beyond doubt and hep PSV win the first silverware of the 2022/23 season.

It would be a day where the new signings would write story as another debutant, attacking midfielder Guus Til scored a hat-trick for PSV in one of the best debut performances ever announcing himself to the fans as their new hero.

Calvin Bassey would want to quickly put the error behind him and prove to the Ajax boardroom and staff that the investment made in him was a worthy one.

If Ronaldo plays on Sunday, it would be his first match under new boss Ten Hag.

Qatar World Cup: 24 Teams To Be Based Within 10km Radius In Doha

The absence of long commutes will ensure players will have more time to train and rest during the competition

IFA on Tuesday said 24 of the 32 teams at the football World Cup in Qatar will have their base camps within a 10-kilometre radius in and around Doha.

The world ruling body said that due to the compact nature of the 21November to 18 December tournament, no domestic flights to matches were needed by the teams.

“Players will have more time to train and rest during the competition while being able to experience the excitement that will take over the country at much closer quarters, as fellow players and passionate fans from all 32 nations will be gathering in a single area,” Colin Smith, FIFA’s World Cup chief operating officer, said.

Among the teams that are based a little further away from the country’s capital city are four-time champions Germany, Belgium, and Saudi Arabia.

FIFA also said it would alongside local organisers be implementing “an unprecedented due diligence process to protect the rights and well-being of workers at a total of 159 hotels.

This will include all of those that will host participating teams and it will be in cooperation with trade unions, independent monitors, and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Qatar has been criticised for its treatment of migrant workers, but officials have said that progress has been made.

However, rights groups insist that more efforts are needed.
