French Forces Make Niger New Home After Mali

0

French forces in the Sahel will switch operating mode after they leave Mali, acting more “in support” of local forces rather than substituting for them, according to their commander.

After nearly a decade fighting militants in Mali, France is pulling its troops out of the country after falling out with its military junta.

President Emmanuel Macron announced the withdrawal in February, saying Operation Barkhane would continue elsewhere in the Sahel but in a smaller and reconfigured form.

In an interview Barkhane commander General Laurent Michon said the force now had less than 2,000 men left in Mali adding that the pullout was on track for completion “by the end of summer, as the president has requested.

Micho said , around 2,500 French troops will remain in the Sahel when the operation is over, “but this depends above all on the wishes of the African states.”

These operations will be “determined more strictly by requests from the African countries, and will take the form of ‘in support of’ and not ‘in replacement for'” the local military, he said.

Illustrating the closer cooperation, Michon said that last year a French unit on the Mali-Niger border was placed under the command of a Nigerien general in charge of the area.

And in March, France set up a “partnership HQ” in the Niger capital Niamey, “with the goal of working with African officers embedded” with Barkhane.

The general said as for the pullout, France has already left its bases in Gossi and Menaka in central Mali and is currently disengaging from a camp in Gao,

Abiy, Sudan’s Burhan Hold Talks In Nairobi After Border Clash

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sayas he has met with Sudan’s coup leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Nairobi and that both committed to “dialogue” to resolve any differences.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of a meeting of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a seven-country regional body

Their talks follow a clash in a volatile border region last month in which Khartoum said that Ethiopian forces had captured and killed Sudanese troops — claims denied by Addis Ababa.

In a Twitter post, accompanied by a picture of the two men Abiy said “We have both agreed that our two countries have plenty of collaborative elements to work on peacefully.”

On the other hand, Burhan said the IGAD meeting gave them an opportunity “to take stock of the response” to challenges in the region, but he did not elaborate.

Sudan’s ruling sovereign council said only that there had been a “closed-door meeting” between Burhan and Abiy.

IGAD and the African Union (AU) voiced alarm last week over the escalating tensions between Ethiopia and Sudan following the incident in the disputed Al-Fashaqa border area.

Khartoum said the Ethiopian army had executed seven Sudanese soldiers and a civilian in a clash on June 22 in Al-Fashaqa, and announced it was recalling its ambassador.

But Addis Ababa claimed that Sudanese forces had crossed into Ethiopian territory and that the casualties resulted from a skirmish with a local militia, denying its soldiers were in the area at the time.

Nigerian Army 8 Division Headquarters has offered over 4,000 residents in Sifawa, Bodinga and Denge-Shuni Local Government Areas of Sokoto State free medical services.

Speaking at the event, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division Sokoto, Major General Uwem Bassey, said the initiative is in furtherance of the Nigerian Army’s corporate social responsibilities geared at bringing succour to the people.

This is in continuation of activities to mark this year’s Nigerian Army Day Celebration, organised by the Division.

The Army General, who was represented by the Garrison Commander, Brigadier General Ralph Nnebife, said the gesture is not only during the Army Day Celebration but a tradition of the Nigerian Army.

“When we came here last year and saw the dilapidated state of this clinic, we promised to renovate it and today the clinic has been fixed, and doctors, nurses and other medical personnel were employed to man the clinic.”

On his part, the Commander 8 Division in charge of medical hospital and services, Col (Dr) Ijoma Ijoamanta Nwosu, said the medical services cover testing and treatment of malaria, hypertension, visual and eye treatment, and provision of eyeglasses.

Others include dental services, diabetes screening, and paediatric services.

He noted that any major medical case that could not be handled would be referred to the Army hospital at Giginya Barrack Sokoto for proper attention and treatment.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the district head of Sifawa, Alhaji Muhammad Buhari Tambari thanked the Nigerian Army for the benevolence gesture.

He appealed to them to extend the same to other communities in the state.

Tambari enjoined the beneficiaries to conduct themselves in an orderly manner to enable the medical personnel to attend to them on time.

Railway Workers Threaten Strike, Urge Prompt Resolution Of ASUU Impasse

Citing protracted talks for improved welfare with no result in sight, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike.

The union regretted that eight months after its three-day nationwide warning strike, no ‘significant achievement’ had been recorded.

NUR also deplored government’s handling of the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, observing that the current administration’s ‘no work, no pay’ policy was disingenuous.

It appealed to the Federal Government to, swiftly, resolve the impasse in the overall interest of the nation. In a statement, yesterday, by its president and secretary, Innocent Luka Ajiji and Segun Esan, NUR challenged government to rescue millions of Nigerian youths that are suffering from this unnecessary test of might, noting: “An idle hand is the devil’s workshop.”

The railway workers charged the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to embrace the lecturers’ University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) payment platform.

This is even as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) urged the National Assembly to urgently legislate on rejuvenating polytechnics to enable them contribute meaningful to Nigeria’s technological revolution.

It stated that a situation, where the polytechnic sector is deprived of funding and discriminated against, would keep the most populous nation under-developed.

Erstwhile chairman of ASUP in Kaduna Polytechnic, Malam Mustapha Yahaya Bida, made the submission, yesterday, while delivering a paper as guest speaker at the institution’s ASUP Week.

British Airways Cancels 1,500 More Flights

British travelers going abroad for the Easter holidays faced disruptions Monday, April 4, 2022 as two main carriers, British Airways and easyJet, canceled dozens of flights due to staff shortages related to soaring cases of COVID-19 in the U.K. Budget carrier easyJet grounded 62 flights scheduled for Monday after canceling at least 222 flights over the weekend. British Airways has cancelled a further 1,500 flights, mostly for July.

The wave of cancellations made over the past weeks will affect tens of thousands hoping to jet off this summer from Heathrow and Gatwick.

The industry has been struggling with staff shortages as demand for air travel rebounds.

British Airways had already removed 10% of scheduled flights between April and October, but said that “regrettably” more reductions were needed.

A spokesperson from the airline, which is the UK’s largest, said: “We took pre-emptive action earlier this year to reduce our summer schedule to provide customers with as much notice as possible about any changes to their travel plans.

“As the entire aviation industry continues to face into the most challenging period in its history, regrettably it has become necessary to make some further reductions.”

The carrier said it was in touch with customers to “apologise and offer to rebook them or issue a full refund”.

The wave of cancellations comes ahead of Friday’s deadline, announced last month by the Department for Transport (DfT), for an amnesty to give airlines a short window to hand back airport slots in the summer season they are not confident they will be able to operate.

BA is expected to announce further cancellations over the summer ahead of the deadline.

Airport slots provide airlines with the authorisation to take off or land at a specified time on a specified day. In usual circumstances, the carriers risk losing the slots – and taking a hit to their business – if they cancel flights.

On Wednesday, British Airways was also affected by a rare “schedule intervention” by Heathrow Airport.

Heathrow asked airlines to cut 30 flights from their Thursday morning schedules, as more passengers were expected than it could deal with.

It made the move to ensure the airport had enough security staff on duty for the number of passengers.

Texas Cancer Center Discovers New Leukemia-Killing Compounds

0

Researchers from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre and Rice University have discovered potential new compound that work with other drugs to kill leukemia cells.

According to a recently published study in the journal Leukemia, the drug is showing great promise because of the innovative methods that led to its discovery.

The researchers, however, noted that the potential drugs are still years away from being tested in cancer patients.

In previous studies, the research groups of Rice biochemist, Natasha Kirienko and MD Anderson physician-scientist, Marina Konopleva, screened some 45,000 small-molecule compounds to find a few that targeted mitochondria.

In the new study, the research group chose eight of the most promising compounds, identified between five and 30 closely related analogs for each, and conducted tens of thousands of tests to systematically determine how toxic each analog was to Leukemia cells, both when administered individually or in combination with existing chemotherapy drugs like doxorubicin.

According to a study lead by author Svetlana Panina, a researcher at the University of Texas, “One of the big challenges was to establish optimal conditions and doses for testing on both cancer cells and healthy cells.

“The results from our previously published cytotoxicity assay were helpful, but very little is known about these small-molecule compounds. None of them had been thoroughly described in other studies, and we had to essentially start from scratch to determine how much to use, what they do in cells, everything. All the doses and treatment conditions had to be adjusted by multiple preliminary experiments.”

Cancer is notorious for hijacking these sorts of programs to fuel pathological growth. For example, previous research has shown leukemia cells have far more damaged mitochondria than healthy cells and are also more sensitive to mitochondrial damage than healthy cells.

Kirienko and Konopleva reasoned that mitophagy-inducing drugs might weaken leukemia cells and make them more susceptible to chemotherapy.

Kano Targets 12 Million Children For Malaria Prevention Exercise

0

The Kano State Government says it is targeting 12 million children below the age of five years for the July to October round of the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention exercise in 44 local government areas of the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Aminu Tsanyawa, made this known at a news conference in Kano.

He said that the exercise would be conducted on a house to house basis to ensure coverage.

Tsanyawa stressed that the four days exercise would be conducted alongside the annual Maternal New born and Child Health Week.

He said the aim was to prevent complicated and severe malaria incidences among the age group.

He also said that, the MNCHW conducted twice every year is a high impact low cost intervention offered to pregnant women and children below the age of five, to increase coverage level of preventive and curative health indicators.

He highlighted that the previous exercise conducted in January 2022 recorded huge success, with Vitamin A covering more than 88 percent.

Tsanyawa expressed optimism that the current round of the exercise would also achieve greater impact, considering the government’s increased support.

He said Vitamin A supplements would be given to more than 3.1 million children, while over 2.8 million children would be dewormed.

The Commissioner also said there would be childhood immunisation of about 68,135 children, while antenatal services would also be provided.

Furthermore, the exercise would provide nutritional status screening for over three million children and birth registration would also be conducted.

The twin exercise would begin on July 5 and would last for four days.

Alleged Organ Harvesting: Court Orders NIMC To Give AGF Biodata Of Ekweremadu’s Kidney Donor

0

The Federal High Court Abuja has ordered the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to transmit the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the biodata information of an alleged Minor to the Attorney General of the Federation for onward transmission to the United Kingdom where Senator Ike Ekweremadu is facing alleged organ harvesting charges.

Following the Senators arrest by the London Metropolitan police, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, had on July 27 urged Justice Inyang Ekwo to order the release of certain official documents of Ukpo domiciled with NIMC, Nigerian Immigration Service and Stanbic-IBTC Bank for the purpose of effectively defending Ekweremadu in the UK.

The prayers were granted by the Justice Inyang Ekwo.

At the today’s proceedings however, counsel to NIMC, Muazu Mohammed told the court that the Commission’s rules of engagement do not allow it to give BioData of an individual, to a private citizen.

He added that based on the NIMC law, such information should be first handed over to the AGF.

Awomolo did not oppose the submission by Mohammed, adding that the AGF has diplomatic line of communication with the UK authorities.

Justice Ekwo subsequently ordered NIMC to supply the information or BioData of the victim which is in possession of the Commission, to the AGF for onward transmission to the relevant courts in the United Kingdom.

Court Grants Okorocha Permission To Travel To US For Treatment

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted permission to former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha to travel to the United States for medical attention.

While granting the permission, Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered the Registrar of the Court to release the traveling passport of the former governor to him to undertake the medical trip.

The order of the Judge followed an application argued by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ola Olanipekun, who notified the court that his client has been having health challenges in the recent times.

Olanipekun argued that Okorocha, now a Senator representing Imo North in the Senate, will not abuse the order and will return to the country for his trial.

Although, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) represented by Chile Okoroma had sought to vehemently oppose the request, the commission soft-pedalled when Justice Ekwo explained that the request would be granted with a caveat by the court.

While granting the request, Justice Ekwo ordered Okorocha to return the passport to the Court Registrar not later than three days of his arrival in the country.

Justice Ekwo subsequently fixed November 7 for his trial in the money laundering criminal charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
