Marmolada Glacier Collapse: Rescue Teams Use Helicopters, Drones For Search

0

At least seven people have been killed after being caught in an avalanche sparked by the collapse of a glacier in the northern Italian Alps.

Emergency officials said eight others were injured in the collapse, with two people suffering serious injuries.

Rescue teams using helicopters and drones have resumed searching for 15 still missing.

Four of the seven killed have been identified by rescuers, three of them Italian, including two mountain guides.

Video of the incident showed an ice mass collapsing down the slopes of Marmolada, the area’s highest mountain.

“An avalanche of snow, ice and rock which in its path hit the access road when there were several roped parties, some of which were swept away,” emergency services spokeswoman Michela Canova said. “The definitive number of mountaineers involved is not yet known,” she added.

The injured hikers, including two people left in critical condition, were taken to a number of hospitals around the area, rescue officials said.

It isn’t immediately clear what caused the section of the glacier, called a serac, to collapse.

But Walter Milan, a rescue service spokesperson, told state TV the area has been experiencing unusually high temperatures in recent days.

“The heat is unusual,” Mr Milan said, noting temperatures have reached 10C at the glacier’s peak in recent days.

“That’s extreme heat,” he said. “Clearly it’s something abnormal.”

Nigerian Army Day Celebration: Commander, Officers Embark On Tree Planting Exercise In Barracks

0

The Commander, Army Headquarters (AHQ) Garrison, Maj.-Gen. Kabir Garba, alongside officers and soldiers has embarked on tree planting exercise within barracks in commemoration of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2022.

The exercise was conducted within Mogadishu Cantonment and barracks within the AHQ Garrison’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) such as Yar’aduwa Barracks and CBA extension.

During the exercise, the commandant said the aim of the exercise was to create awareness by supporting units under his command and the barracks community to take a stand against deforestation and actively participate in greening of environment.

Garba added that the tree planting exercise was also in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s position on tree planting, adding that the COAS had always demonstrated it by planting a tree in all the building projects he had inaugurated in recent times.

“It is also worthy to note that the exercise is in line with tree planting campaign of the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Mohammadu Buhari.

“Buhari has pledged to plant 25 million trees in Nigeria to enhance the countries carbon sink as part of the countries efforts to implement the Paris Climate Change Agreement,” he said.

NADCEL is celebrated from July 1 to July 6 every year across army formations and units.

Other activities lined up include humanitarian outreaches while grand finale would take place on July 6 in Owerri.

UN Ocean Conference: Pres. Buhari Says National Policy On Plastic Pollution, Formulated And Established

0

Nigeria has pledged  commitment to reducing marine plastic pollution from land-based sources and activities.

President Muhammadu Buhari, according to his spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja, gave the assurance in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, at the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, in Lisbon, Portugal.

While highlighting Nigeria’s effort at ensuring the health and sustainability of oceans, seas and marine resources, the president said that a national policy on plastic pollution and the road map on tackling solid and plastic waste management had been formulated and established.

Buhari, who lauded the UN for leading the process of effective ocean governance, said that Nigeria had mainstreamed ocean management into the economy, constituting a Presidential Committee on Sustainable Blue Economy.

He also announced that Nigeria had embarked on creation of two marine protected areas.

Buhari reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to participating constructively in ongoing negotiations for various multilateral agreements, including on conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

‘‘The entire southern border of Nigeria is the Atlantic Ocean with a coastline of about 853km, being the longest in the West African region.

‘‘It is endowed with enormous biodiversity resources such as the freshwater and mangrove forest ecosystems with diverse species of fauna and flora.

‘‘We acknowledge the fact that a healthy ocean and coastal environment are key to a sustainable development. We must, therefore, conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

‘‘The ocean is key to the global economy, with an estimated 40 million people projected to be employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

‘‘Our oceans and seas are repositories of tremendous wealth in terms of natural capital, ecosystem services, living and non-living resources.

”We are conscious of the fact that our maritime and aquatic resources are critical for the livelihoods of our people; hence, our commitment to the Africa Union 2063 Agenda and the attainment of United Nations SDG 14,’’ he said.

The Nigerian leader also called for more partnerships and knowledge-sharing to protect humanity’s common ocean heritage.

He said: ‘‘Science tells us that in order to stop the downward spiral we are witnessing in the ocean, we must fully and highly protect, at least, 30% of the global ocean by 2030 and dramatically strengthen the management of human activities in the other 70%.

‘‘This must be reflected in the text we negotiate here as well as in upcoming negotiations planned in December 2022 at the  Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) of the Conference of Parties (COP).

‘‘Nigeria is a member of the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People and the Blue Leaders Campaign.

‘‘The global community needs to agree to the effective protection of 30% of the global ocean by 2030 at the CBD COP in December, and a robust high seas treaty that doesn’t simply endorse the status quo, but the one that ensures all nations manage their activities in the high seas to prevent significant effects on the ocean.

‘‘These two steps will go a long way in restoring the health and resilience of our oceans.’’

French President Macron Reshuffles Cabinet After Losing Parliamentary Majority

0

French President Emmanuel Macron has reshuffled his government after his centrist ruling alliance failed to win a parliamentary majority last month.

The president on Monday made several key changes to high-profile positions and finally ceded to public pressure by removing Damien Abad, the solidarity and social cohesion minister, who is currently facing a rape investigation.

French Red Cross director Jean-Christophe Combe was nominated to replace Abad, who has firmly denied accusations linked to sexual misconduct made by several women against him through the press.

In a surprise move, chief economist of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Laurence Boone was named the new Europe minister in place of Clement Beaune, who had played a key role in negotiations with the United Kingdom over Brexit.

In another key change, Christophe Bechu, mayor of the Loire city of Angers and a key ally of former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, was named environment minister in lieu of Macron loyalist Amelie de Montchalin, who stepped aside after losing the battle for her seat in the parliamentary elections.

Olivier Veran, who was the face of the crisis throughout most of the coronavirus pandemic, was put in charge of presenting government policy after moving from health to a different cabinet role in May.

Adesanya Reacts To Boos After Cannonier Win

0

Israel Adesanya admits Saturday wasn’t the best performance of his career.

At UFC 276, Adesanya (23-1 MMA, 12-1 UFC) defeated Jared Cannonier (15-6 MMA, 8-6 UFC) by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45) to successfully defend the promotion’s middleweight title for the fifth time.

Despite a largely dominant performance, the lack of action drew criticism from both booing fans in the arena and commenters online. Initially disappointed, Adesanya mentally framed the performance differently and was more comfortable with it shortly after the main event’s conclusion.

“(I feel) a lot better,” Adesanya told reporters including MMA Junkie. “I’ve said this before in the past: On my worst day, I can kill the best man. I call that suicide, on my worst day. I had an off night tonight. (Coach) Eugene (Bareman) told me, ‘The people who really know you, (your) teammates, (your) family, they know you had an off night.’ And still, I still f*cked him up.”

It takes two to tango and Adesanya faulted and credited both himself and Cannonier for the lack of exchanges. Adesanya has long thought Cannonier is a top-tier fighter, a hypothesis proven in his eyes at UFC 276.

“I couldn’t find my power shots, my kicks,” Adesanya said. “The initiators – the jabs and leg kicks – were working, but I was trying to find the power shots. He was adjusting well. It wasn’t just me vs. him. … His adjustments to what I was doing, I’d go ahead, I got to his body, I got to his legs. I got to his legs and he’d adjust and get away from my power. I was able to get away from his, as well.”

As for the boos, Adesanya said he wasn’t fazed by them. He pointed out many all-time great combat sports athletes have been booed, jeered, insulted and criticized by crowds over the spans of their careers. He’s no different.

WAFCON 2022 : Super Falcons To Miss Nnadozie In first match

0

The Super Falcons will be without first choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who is suspended for receiving yellow cards in different matches of the qualifying series.

With her exclusion, Israel-based Tochukwu Oluehi is likely to start between the sticks for the Falcons against the Banyana Banyana tonight.

Nnadozie played a key role in helping Falcons qualify for their 12th tournament, especially in the reverse fixture in the final qualifiers against Ivory Coast in Abidjan.

A brilliant penalty save by Nnadozie at the Stade Robert Champroux fired the Falcons through to Morocco.

The Falcons defeated the Ivoirians 2-0 in Abuja in the first leg, but the Elephants had a chance to get back into the game in the 34th minute of the reverse fixture, after defender Ashleigh Plumptre was adjudged to have tripped an Ivoirian striker in the Nigerian area, with the referee pointing to the penalty spot.

Nnadozie saved the penalty and the rebound off the same player went into the side-netting.

The Ivoirians launched a late onslaught on the Falcons but met a steely Nigerian defence, before Esther Okoronkwo’s 87th minute strike all but sealed qualification with a 3-0 aggregate win.

Breaking! CAF Moves AFCON 2023 To 2024

0

The next Africa Cup of Nations will be played in Cote d’Ivoire in 2024, and not 2023 – Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Patrice Motsepe  said on Sunday.

The tournament was to be hosted in June-July 2023, which is the height of the rainy season in Ivory Coast.

“We cannot take the risk,” the South African said in the Moroccan capital Rabat.

With the World Cup in Qatar taking place in November and December this year, the decision has been taken to postpone the finals rather than bring them forward.

It means the Nations Cup will be held in January and February for the second time in a row, after this year’s tournament in Cameroon.

In 2017, Caf announced that it would move the finals from their traditional January-February slot to June-July in a bid to avoid repeated disputes with European clubs forced to release players in the middle of the season.

“January is not the ideal time because of the European clubs, but it is the only choice we have,” Motsepe added.

Under former Caf president Issa Hayatou, who was overthrown in 2017, African football’s ruling body refused to countenance any possible change of date for the months the continent’s flagship sports event is hosted.

Yet just four months after taking charge, Hayatou’s successor – Ahmad of Madagascar – turned this policy on its head following consultation with the continent’s officials.

Caf Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba said there are no plans to permanently move the finals back to January-February given the contrasting weather patterns across the continent at different times of the year.

Both Motsepe and Mosengo-Omba were speaking in Morocco, which is hosting the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

African Super League

On the agenda since Fifa President Gianni Infantino hinted the possibility in 2019 the African Super League will get underway in August 2023.

The tournament will feature 24 teams and carry total prize money of $100m, said Motsepe, adding that just over $10m will go to the winner.

Citing ‘financial challenges’ in Caf which he inherited from Ahmad, whom he replaced last year, Motsepe said that businesses are interested in sponsoring the event.

Caf also said that the African Champions League, which is open to all countries in Africa, will continue alongside the new African Super League, where the top 24 teams will be determined according to their Fifa ranking.

Following huge criticism by beaten finalists Al Ahly following the decision to stage this year’s Champions League final in the home stadium of eventual winners Wydad Casablanca, Caf has also announced that the decisive clash will return to being a two-legged format.

After over half a century of staging two-legged finals, Africa’s leading club match became a one-off final from 2020-2022.

WAFCON 2022: Super Falcons, Banyana Bayana Rivalry Returns In Morocco

Nigeria and South Africa have another day in the sun as the Super Falcons and Banyana Banyana go to war for three points, in the opening game of Group C of the 12th Women Africa Cup of Nations which began in Morocco on Saturday.

Nine-time champions and FIFA World Cup ever-present Nigeria have not forgotten how, 10 months ago and on home soil, the youthful Banyana squad ran away spectacular 4-2 winners in the final match of the first edition of Aisha Buhari Women’s Tournament. Venue was the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

Since then, however, the Falcons have flown with formidable wings, eliminating West African arch-rivals Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire in the qualifying series for the WAFCON and coming close to stripping the ‘A’ Women Team of Canada in the second of a two-match tour in that country three months ago.

Monday’s spectacle will see Coach Randy Waldrum send out his best legs against a team considered Nigeria’s strongest opposition on the African continent at the moment, and Coach Desiree Ellis is expected to do likewise as both teams of titanesses battle for crucial three points at the Moulay Hassan Stadium.

“Naturally, this is a very big game and we are looking forward to it. It is also a game that should be a good advertisement for African women football. When you have Nigeria playing South Africa at the senior women level, it is a treat.

“Our objectives and expectations remain the same: to earn a ticket to the World Cup and to win the trophy. We will take it one match at a time. It is interesting to play South Africa first, and we can move ahead from there.”

Team captain Onome Ebi, who is the oldest player at the competition at 39, has featured in five FIFA World Cup finals, and still looks vibrant enough to feature at the FIFA World Cup in Australia & New Zealand next year: “For me, it is a good thing that we are playing South Africa first. It is a strong team and that will make our team to be strong and to give our best from the very beginning.

“I have won this trophy several times but I still have the hunger to win it, and also to go to a sixth World Cup. We will look first to pick up the World Cup ticket, and then the trophy.”

Nigeria will be without first choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who is suspended for receiving yellow cards in different matches of the qualifying series (against Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire), meaning Israel –based Tochukwu Oluehi could be between the sticks for the Super Falcons against the Banyana on Monday night.

In Saturday’s opening match, Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses pipped Burkina Faso 1-0 to surge to the top of Group A.

There are four teams in each of the three groups of the 12-team finals, with the top two teams in each of the groups and two best third-placed teams proceeding to the quarter finals.

All the four semi-finalists will represent Africa at next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup finals, with the fifth-placed team to be eligible for a Playoff Tournament that will hold next yea

WAFCON 2022: Senegal In A Record First ever win of

0

Senegal achieved a major milestone on Sunday when they beat Uganda 2-0 in Group A at the 2022  Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, to record their first ever win in the history of the competition.

It was in similar fashion that their Group A counterparts and hosts, Morocco did a night before when they earned their first victory in 24 years.

In a hard-fought match, Mame Moussa Cissé’s Teranga Lionesses beat the Ugandans after scoring a goal in each half.

Diakhaté Ndeye opened the scoring for the Senegalese team with a penalty in the 39th minute after Tunisian referee Dorsaf Ganouati had no hesitation in pointing to the spot after a foul on Senegal’s 16-year-old striker Hapsatou Diallo.

Uganda could have equalised a few minutes later through their dangerous Kazakhstan-based striker, Fauzia Najjema, but Lionesses goalkeeper Tenning Sene brilliantly denied Najjema and the Cranes.

Pre-match favourites Uganda laid siege to the Senegal goal, with Najjema hitting the post in the 32nd minute, but somehow Senegal retained their 1-0 lead at half-time.

Senegal doubled their lead through Nguenar Ndiaye five minutes after the break, who finished clinically after being put through by the young rising star of Senegalese football, Hapsatou Diallo.

The goal was a huge blow to the Crested Cranes, who desperately tried to get back in the game to no avail.

Lionesses goalkeeper, Tenning Sene, may have been a peripheral figure for Senegal in the build up to the tournament, but she grabbed her chance brilliantly to be named “Woman of the Match” after a scintillating performance in goal for Senegal.

The 2-0 win for Senegal gives them top spot in Group A, as they leapfrog Morocco, who they join on three points.
