Longest River In Italy Hits Record Water Low

0

Italy’s longest river, the Po, is drying up.

The Po River, the longest river in Italy, is hitting record low water levels after months without heavy rainfall.

Stretching from the Alps in the northwest to the Adriatic Sea on the east coast, the vast waterway is a vital source of water for several regions. It is used for drinking water, nourishing vast swathes of agricultural land, as well as producing hydroelectric power across northern Italy.

Water in the Po Valley has now dropped to record-low levels, partly as a result of the lack of rainfall that northern Italy has been suffering, as well as high temperatures and a lack of snow in the mountains that feed the river.

Many of these areas have now been without any rain at all for more than 110 days, according to the Po River Observatory.

The Po River is normally a wide stretch of murky water but has now dried up with large expanses of sand exposed.

The Po Valley is the most important agricultural area in the country, as it produces around 40% of Italy’s food including wheat, rice, and tomatoes. With the ongoing drought, farmers are struggling to keep crops irrigated and many towns in the Po Valley have been asked to ration water during the night amidst the drought.

Benjamin Koetz, Head of ESA’s Sustainable Initiatives Office, said, “According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, agriculture is consuming up to 70% of freshwater and considering the increasing water scarcity the use of water needs to be more efficient in this sector.

For this purpose, ESA is preparing the Land Surface Temperature Monitoring Mission as part of the Copernicus Expansion Missions which will allow us to monitor the evapotranspiration of crops at a field level and, with that, support sustainable irrigation practices.”

According to new results published by an ESA-funded project called CAREHeat, the Mediterranean Sea is currently enduring a marine heatwave with temperatures in May 2022 4°C (7.2°F) higher than the average for the 1985-2005 period.

According to the findings, the surface water temperature hit peaks of over 23°C (73°F).

Shiroro Attack A Direct Assault On Nigeria- President Buhari

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has described Thursday’s attack in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State as a direct assault on Nigeria which will not be allowed to go unpunished.

In a message, the President paid tributes to the gallant men of the security forces who lost their lives in the process of defending others from the attack.

He said “We honour our security forces, and particularly those brave souls who have given their lives fighting against the evil that is terrorism. They constitute the best that Nigeria has to offer and we remember each of them.

“Sadly, Nigeria’s fight against terrorism continues. It is a battle that is taking its toll on all of us. But we shall not relent, nor shall we surrender.

“We say it again that we have reduced Boko Haram to a shell of its former self. But terrorists are parasites. They thrive when the world is suffering.

“This atrocity only serves to further strengthen us against them. Nigeria is united in obliterating these demons. Each day we grow closer to that goal. When they lash out during times of global suffering it is the act of a cornered animal, an act of desperation.

“As always, their goal is the same: to sow fear and division amongst us. We will not let them.

“Instead let us pray for the families and loved ones of those who sacrificed their lives in the fight against evil, and let us pray for the safe and speedy return of those abducted. We will do everything possible to ensure their return.

“And to the sadists, I say this: we are coming. No matter what rock you crawl under, what hole you sink into, what lie you hide behind, we are coming and we will find you. Shiroro will see justice. Nigeria will know peace,” the President assured.

Arms Embargo Placed On Armed Groups In Volatile Congo

0

The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution extending an arms embargo on armed groups in Congo, which is facing an upsurge in violence in the mineral-rich east, with Russia, China and its three African members abstaining.

Congo’s government has repeatedly called for the lifting of a requirement that it give advance notice of any shipments of arms and military supplies as well as military assistance it receives to the Security Council committee monitoring sanctions on the country.

The requirement was eased in the French-drafted resolution that was adopted by a vote of 10-0. The five countries that abstained backed Congo and wanted the requirement lifted.

The resolution maintains the arms embargo on rebel groups as well as asset freezes and travel bans on individuals and entities until 1 July 2023.

It also extends the mandate of the panel of experts monitoring sanctions until 1 August 2023.

France’s UN ambassador, Nicolas De Riviere, said Congo’s request to lift the notification procedure had been heard and the resolution adopted Thursday “significantly eases this procedure” in order to support Congolese armed forces reforms.

But it doesn’t end the requirement.

The resolution was adopted a day after the UN special envoy for Congo warned that the M23 rebel group has increasingly acted as a conventional army during escalating military action in the volatile east and could threaten the UN peacekeeping force responsible for protecting civilians.

France Charges Nine Suspects Over Drowning Of 27 Migrants

0

French prosecutors have charged nine men over their involvement in the November 2021 Channel drowning of migrants in which 27 people died, according to a judicial source on Friday.

This takes the total number of people charged for their alleged role in the disaster to 10, of whom five have been incarcerated on accusations including manslaughter.

The death of the 27 in late November was the worst accident in the Channel since 2018 when the narrow strait became a key route for migrants from Africa, the Middle East and Asia who have been increasingly using small boats to reach England from France.

Among the 27 – aged seven to 47 – were 16 Iraqi Kurds, four Afghans, three Ethiopians, one Somali, one Egyptian and one Vietnamese migrant. Only two people survived the disaster.

Police had arrested 15 suspects in an overnight operation on Sunday to Monday as part of their months-long investigation into the disaster, releasing five of them without charges.

The others were taken before a judge who charged one of them on Wednesday and the nine others on Thursday including with involuntary manslaughter, involuntary injury, endangering the lives of others and people trafficking, said the source.

Some of the people charged allegedly acted as drivers, people-traffickers or provided shelter, notably on behalf of a network originating in Afghanistan aiming to bring migrants to Britain illegally.
