Russia has reiterated that it had not dropped the idea of seizing Western-owned assets and businesses in the country, as a top official sharply criticized governments that have hit Moscow with sanctions.

In a combative media briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that Russia was prepared to “act accordingly” if the West decided to use Russia’s frozen state assets – chief among them being around $300 billion of central bank foreign currency reserves.

The use of the funds “will be interpreted by us as an unlawful and defiantly unfriendly attack, giving us the right to take retaliatory actions to protect our interests,” she said

Top Western officials, including European Union foreign policy Chief Josep Borrell, have suggested seizing the frozen reserves to help fund Ukraine’s reconstruction after the war.

Zakharova called the West’s move to freeze the assets a violation of international law.

“We should not forget about the foreign assets of Western countries, businesses and citizens who are located on the territory of our country,” she said.

If the West failed to adhere to the principles of democracy, an open economy, private property and judicial independence, then “we will recognize this and act accordingly,” Zakharova added.

Dozens of international companies including oil giant BP BP.L , French carmaker Renault RENA.PA , and McDonald’s MCD have mothballed operations there since Moscow began what it calls its “special military operation” and the subsequent imposition of tough Western sanctions.

Russian lawmakers in May gave initial approval to a bill that would allow the government to nationalize the assets of Western companies that have left.

Israeli Parliament Dissolved, Sets Fifth Election In Four Years

0

Israeli lawmakers dissolved parliament on Thursday, forcing the country’s fifth election in less than four years, with Foreign Minister Yair Lapid set to take over as caretaker Prime Minister at midnight.

After the unanimous 92-0 vote, the centrist Lapid embraced outgoing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, whose year in charge of an unwieldy, eight-party coalition was ultimately undone by its ideological divisions.

Lapid, whose Hungarian-born father survived the Holocaust, went immediately to Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial centre after the parliament vote.

“There, I promised my late father that I will always keep Israel strong and capable of defending itself and protecting its children,” the 58-year-old said in a statement.

The newly called election set for November 1 marks another sign that Israel remains mired in an unprecedented era of political gridlock, with early opinion polls indicating the results may again be inconclusive.

Bennett has said he will not contest the vote and is stepping back from politics, tweeting the Hebrew word “Toda” (thank you), after lawmakers sealed his departure from office. He later hosted Lapid for a short handover ceremony.

Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has assured that he and his allies — extreme-right nationalists and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties — will finally rally a majority, following what he described on Thursday as a “failed (coalition) experiment”.

“We are the only alternative. A strong, nationalist, responsible government,” said Netanyahu, who is on trial over corruption charges he denies.

Reps Approve Electoral Offences Commission, Tribunal Establishment

0

The House of Representatives has passed for second reading, a bill seeking to create a National Electoral Offences Commission and an Electoral Offences Tribunal.

The House had harmonised the version earlier passed by the Senate and transmitted to it for concurrence, with five similar bills sponsored by its members.

The consolidated bill was jointly sponsored by the Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa (on behalf of the Senate); Chairman, House Committee on Electoral Matters, Aishatu Dukku; John Dyeh, Francis Uduyok and Kingsley Chinda.

The legislation is titled, ‘A Bill for an Act to Establish National Electoral Offences Commission and the Electoral Offences Tribunal to Provide for the Legal Framework for Investigation and Prosecution of Electoral Offences for the general Improvement of the Electoral Process in Nigeria; and for Related Matters.’

At the plenary on Thursday, the Majority Whip, Mohammed Monguno, who led the debate on the bill on behalf of the Majority Leader, justified the proposal while highlighting the benefits for the electoral system and the electorate.

Monguno said, “This bill is very relevant and germane to the dream or quest for Nigeria to attain a truly democratic status in the comity of nations, especially against the backdrop of the clamour to deliver an election that is transparent, fair and accountable to the yearnings and aspirations of the people of this country.

“As a legislature that is responsive and responsible for the yearnings and aspirations of the people that gave us the sacred mandate to represent them, it behoves us as per Section 4 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), that gave us the power to make laws for the peace, order and good governance of the country, to enact the Electoral Act to make it ‘octotonous;’ that means to make it (to be) in consonance with the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

“To have an Electoral Act that delivers a transparent and credible election is sine qua non to the attainment of true democracy and it is an instrument of getting a leadership, both at Executive and the Legislative levels, that can truly answer their name as representatives of the people that can be held accountable, responsible and responsive to the mandate that they are given to serve.

“You cannot give what you don’t have. So, against this backdrop, there is the need for us to enact or reform our electoral system through the Electoral Act and give Nigerians a system that is going to throw up leaders that are accountable and responsive to the yearnings and aspirations of the people, and give elections that are truly credible and transparent to the Nigerian public. It was against this backdrop that this bill was initiated to capture the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.

In her contribution, Dukku noted that electoral crimes lead to low quality, corrupt and violent political leadership. She added that the situation helps election riggers and offenders take control of the government against the democratic will of the electorate. She stated that a decisive deterrent through efficient criminal prosecution is the most effective strategy for defeating electoral offenders.

Dukku said, “INEC clearly does not have the needed human capacity to prosecute electoral offences committed across Nigeria’s 119,973 polling units, 8809 wards, 360 federal constituencies, 109 senatorial districts and 774 local government areas. By these statistics, it is unrealistic to expect INEC to conduct free, fair and credible elections, and simultaneously prosecute offences arising from the same elections.

“Indeed, INEC itself has admitted that it lacks the wherewithal to cleanse the system. Its failure to prosecute even 1 per cent of the 870,000 alleged electoral offences in the 2011 elections is an affirmation of the necessity of a paradigm shift in how we deal with electoral offences. And the inability to prosecute electoral offenders has helped to sustain a reign of systemic election rigging, election violence which deters the participation of especially the women from participating in elections and it also leads to voter registration manipulation, vote-buying, disinformation, declaration of false election results, destruction or invalidation of valid ballots, tampering with election systems and voter impersonation.

“These fuel the patriotic call for INEC to be divested of that statutory duty. It is widely agreed that this duty is an undue burden on INEC. It distracts INEC from its core constitutional mandate of conducting a free and fair election. Some human rights activists have even argued that under our criminal jurisprudence, it is unsound for INEC to double as the complainant and prosecutor in matters of alleged electoral offences.”

New Documentary, The Princess, Immerses Audiences In Diana’s Story

0

Oscar-nominated director Ed Perkins trawled through hundreds of hours of footage of Princess Diana in search of moments he hoped would offer new perspective on her life and public image, 25 years after her death.

His new film “The Princess” relies entirely on archive video to trace Diana’s life from a timid teen to her death on Aug. 31, 1997, aged 36, and the unprecedented scenes of mourning that ensued.

In eschewing interviews and retrospective analysis traditionally used as the narrative tool in documentaries, Perkins said he hoped to explore the complicated relationship between Diana, the media and the public and elicit an emotional response from audiences.

“Our hope was to use the archive as a kind of time machine to take audiences back into our collective pasts and allow them to relive the story,” he said in an interview.

Perkins, who was 11 when Diana died and remembers the confusion he felt over the outpouring of emotion, said he hoped his style of filmmaking would encourage audiences to reanalyse their own relationship with the princess.

“The thing that’s most interesting for me is what was our role in this? What was our active role in the story? What was our complicity?” said Perkins, who earned a 2019 Oscar nomination for the documentary short “Black Sheep.”

“The part of the Diana story of this puzzle that I felt was less explored and more interesting for me was, what does Diana’s story say about all of us? And so that’s the whole approach here, to kind of immerse audiences in this present tense unfolding, to never let you escape from the archive, to take you back into these moments in all our lives.”

Diana had just turned 20 when she married Charles in 1981 and became the subject of global admiration and scrutiny.

“The Princess” will be released in theatres in Britain on June 30.

American Singer R. Kelly Sentenced To 30 Years In Prison For Sex Crimes

0

Famous American multiple Grammy Award Winner, Robert Kelly, also known as R. Kelly, was on Wednesday sentenced to 30 years in prison, according to reports.

The Brooklyn federal court jury convicted him after hearing that he used his fame to subject young fans, including children, to systematic sexual abuse.

It was also said that his entourage of managers and aides used his celebrity status to meet girls and keep them obedient, operation prosecutors said amounted to a criminal enterprise.

The embattled singer has been in custody since federal prosecutors indicted him in New York and Chicago in July 2019.

The singer has faced several sexual abuse claims without conviction and denied all previous allegations.

R.Kelly was indicted in February 2019 on ten counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse — a class 2 felony — involving four alleged victims.

Kelly’s lawyers called for a lighter sentence with a maximum of approximately 17 years.

Poor access to climate information, fueling Food wastage – Expert

0

The Executive Secretary of Human and Environmental Development Agenda Resource Centre, Sulaimon Arigbabu, has said that about 40 per cent of the food produced in Nigeria gets wasted between the farm and en route to the final consumer.

Arigbadu stated that the major reason for the waste is because Nigerian farmers lack access to reliable and accurate information on climate which could have aided their planning.

According to him, this high level of food waste is the reason Nigeria is ranked as having one of the lowest per hectare yields for major agricultural input.

Arigbabu disclosed this while speaking at a webinar organised by the Punch Media Foundation in commemoration of the 2022 World Food Safety day.

The webinar was themed: Food security, Nutrition and Food Safety: The Role of stakeholders in achieving better health through safer food.

He added that one of the most critical issues Nigeria needs to deal with regarding its low per hectare yield is improving farmers’ access to accurate and reliable climate information services, adding that it will enable them to be aware of the appropriate time to farm.

Arigbabu explained, “In Nigeria, we have one of the lowest per hectare yields for major agricultural input. In terms of wheat production, our per hectare yield is just 1.4 tons per hectare while in Egypt the per hectare yield is 6.4 tons per hectare.

farming

“Also soya beans, our per hectare yield is 1.2 tons per hectare while in Egypt it is 10 tons per hectare, in terms of maize Egypt does 6 tons, South Africa does 5.1 tons while Nigeria does 1.6 tons.

“This happens because of the support we give to our small-scale farmers. It is because of the lack in the knowledge of the farmers in terms of good agronomical practices; we do not provide our farmers with accurate, reliable and timely climate information access.”

He further added, “Sometimes many farmers plant when they should not, especially when the real rain has not started. And they would have gone to borrow money from their people to plant and the whole thing they put in the ground will be burnt or get lost. Many of such farmers get frustrated and leave the profession entirely.

“The opportunity lost due to such is the major reason why we are having food insecurity. If we deal with that and then deaL with post-harvest loss, things will get better” he said.

To tackle this, Arigbabu implored all stakeholders in the agricultural sector, particularly at the state and local government levels to ensure Nigerian farmers are adequately provided with accurate climate information services.

“If we stop post-harvest loss for instance today, we would have by 80 per cent taken care of those who do not have access to good and nutritious food,” he said.

Ndidi Returns After Three Months Out

0

Leicester City coach, Brendan Rodgers, has been handed a major boost ahead of the new Premier League season with the return of Wilfred Ndidi to training

This was made known on Instagram Wednesday after the Foxes posted a video of the 25-year-old midfielder running onto the pitch to join his teammates for his sixth pre-season training at the club.

Ndidi, who was full of smiles on his return, was put through his paces and was drilled in shuttle races as the Foxes intensify their preparations for the new EPL campaign.

Beneath the video, the club wrote, “Our Nigeria international (Ndidi) is into the pre-season fold.”

His return to action will also hand Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, a big boost ahead of his team’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau in September.

The former Genk star, who has two years left on his current deal at the club, last featured for the Eagles in their round of 16 clash against Tunisia at the 2022 AFCON in Cameroon in January, missing the team’s last six games.

Also seen in the video was fellow Nigerian Kelechi Iheanacho, who had a decent campaign last term, scoring eight goals with nine assists in 41 games across all competitions.

Ndidi has been out since sustaining a knee injury in Leicester City’s 2-1 second leg defeat at Rennes in the Europa Conference League in March, missing the club’s last 17 games.

Meanwhile, Leicester are planning an overseas training camp and six friendlies over the course of the summer as Rodgers hopes a rigorous pre-season will lead to a strong start to the new campaign.

During the first fortnight of pre-season, City will play the first of their summer fixtures but this will be behind closed doors.

City will then head abroad for an overseas camp, their first since before the COVID-19 pandemic, with Evian on Lake Geneva the likely destination, with the club having spent time during a couple of previous summers. On their way back, they will stop off in Belgium for their first public friendly against sister side OH Leuven on Saturday, July 16. That is the only pre-season fixture so far confirmed by the club.
