Payne Sisters, Plumptre In 25-Woman Squad For WAFCON

0

Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum listed 13 debutants in his 25-man squad for his team’s title defence at this year’s WAFCON in Morocco,

They are Ashleigh Plumptre, Michelle Alozie, Regina Otu, Vivian Ikechukwu, Gift Monday, Ifeoma Onumonu, sisters Nicole, Toni Payne, Akudo Ogbonna, Christy Ucheibe, Chinonyerem Macleans, Ifeoma Onumonu and Peace Efih.

The squad also has Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala as well as several experienced campaigners like skipper Onome Ebi, Tochukwu Oluehi, Francisca Ordega and Osinachi Ohale.

The team is aiming for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title and will depart for Morocco Monday.

Meanwhile, former Falcons players have lamented the absence of China-based strikers Desire Oparanoize and Chinwendu Ihezuo from next month’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Both players were part of the nine forwards called up by Randy Waldrum for the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco.

The duo was left out of the squad preparing for their title defence due to COVID-19 restrictions imposed at their base in China, our correspondent learnt.

Oparanozie, who was set for her fifth WAFCON appearance, was replaced by Anam Imo, while Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene was drafted in for Chinwendu Ihezuo, who was billed to make her second appearance at the tournament.

Efionwan Ekpo, who featured at the 2006 WAFCON and two Women’s World Cups in 2003 and 2007, said the absence of the duo would limit the options at the disposal of coach Randy Waldrum.

“It is not always good to lose key players with experience like Desire, ahead of tournaments like WAFCON,” Ekpo said

“But I believe their replacements will do a good job in their absence. The coach still has enough quality in the squad to defend the title and I believe with good preparations and a bit of luck, we should lift the title again, but we must not underrate any team.”

Ex-Falcons captain Kikelomo Ajayi added that players who replaced the duo have a huge gap to fill.

“They are about some of the best strikers we have and I think they will be missed; those coming in must raise their game to fill their spaces.”

The 12th WAFCON will be held from July 2 to 23 in Morocco with 12 teams competing for the title for the first time ever.

Nine-time WAFCON champions Falcons take on South Africa, Botswana and Burundi in the group stages of the competition.

The Cup-holders go up against the Banyana Banyana in their first match at the Prince Heritier Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat on July 4 before their fixtures against Botswana on July 7 and Burundi on July 10 at the same venue.

Eaglets Beat B’Faso 2-1 To Win WAFU Cup

0

The Golden Eaglets on Friday defeated the Junior Etalons of Burkina Faso 2-1 to lift the 2022 West African Football Union U-17 tournament at the Cape Coast Stadium in Ghana.

Abubakar Abdullahi had threatened the Burkinabe rear as early as the eighth minute when his low drive streamed away from goal, but in the 22nd minute, he rose highest in the box to powerfully nod Emmanuel Michael’s perfect delivery into the net for Nigeria’s first goal.

In the 34th minute, Abdullahi missed a golden opportunity to make it two for himself and for Nigeria, but he flulled his lines, allowing the Stallions a respite. The miss would knock hard seven minutes later, when Abdulramane Ouedraogo, also with a header, equalized for Burkina Faso.

Two minutes into the second half, Abdullahi got his second and Nigeria’s second, taking the Golden Eaglets to a 2-1 lead.

However, 12 minutes later, he should have made it a hat-trick and Nigeria’s third but he lost the opportunity.

That loss could once more have proved costly, as the Stallions broke forward, only to see Nigeria goalkeeper Richard Odoh come up with a magnificent save.

In the 67th minute, Ebube Okeke rocked the crossbar from 25 yards, but there were to be no more goals and Nigeria collected a second regional diadem at youth level five weeks after the U20 boys defeated neighbours Benin Republic in the final to win the WAFU B competition in Niger Republic.

Nigeria goalkeeper Richard Odoh was selected the Man-of-the-Match. His compatriot Emmanuel Michael won the prize in all three previous matches against Ghana, Togo and Ivory Coast.

In the third-place match, an injury time goal earned Ghana a hard-fought 3-2 win against Ivory Coast in the third place match.

After losing to Nigeria and Burkina Faso in the semi-finals, both Ghana and Ivory Coast headed into the match with the hope of ending their campaign at the tournament on a high.

With the game tied at 2-2 and heading for penalty shootout, Abdul Razak Salifu netted in the 92nd minute to seal the win for his side.

Ivory Coast had taken the lead in the seventh minute but Abdul Rashid Adam equalized for Ghana just two minutes after the opening goal.

Ghana then went 2-1 up in the 57th minute before Makhete Moustaha N’Diaye made it 2-2 on 72 minutes.

And in two minutes of added time Salifu emerged the hero as he bagged the winner to end the tie 3-2 for the hosts.

Why I Joined Fourth-Tier Club – Oliseh

0

Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh, has revealed why he accepted the offer to coach German Regionalliga West club, Sav Straelen,

Whereas the professional first three levels of the German football league system each are single division only and are organised by nationwide governing bodies, the semi-professional level four Regionalliga comprises five independent divisions, each run by different regional and/or state associations.

Oliseh who had his first training at his new club’s North Rhine-Westphalia base, said his immediate aim was to help the club stabilise.

The 47-year-old last managed Eredivisie club Fortuna Sittard and is now looking forward to his first game against Krefeld-Fischeln in a friendly on Saturday (today).

The club’s other friendlies are against Sonsbeck and MSV Dusseldorf on July 6 and 9 respectively.

Having coached top sides like Sittard and the Nigerian national team, Oliseh sees his new job in the German fourth tier as a new challenge

Speaking, the former Eagles captain said, “I’m excited at the job and I feel good about it.

“It’s a good challenge for me, it’s just over an hour’s drive from home and I’m hopeful of a good start with the team

“I am looking forward to my first game and the baptism of fire will be against a very strong team (St Pauli) in the DFB competition.”

Sarri Wants Okereke At Lazio

0

SS Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri is eyeing a move for Nigerian striker David Okereke ahead of the new 2022/23 Serie A season.

Sarri who guided Lazio to fifth on the league table last campaign, is searching for back up forward for Ciro Immobile who netted an astonishing 27 goals in 31 league games in the Italian top-flight last season according to Diretta Goal.

Okereke spent last season on loan at Venezia and was one of the bright spots during a terrible campaign for the Winged Lions.

The 24-year-old scored seven goals and added another assist, but it was not enough to prevent Venezia from finishing bottom in Serie A and getting relegated.

Okereke still one year left on his current deal with Club Brugges but is not willing to return to the club.

Brugge are willing to let the Nigerian youth international leave permanently this summer and will look to recoup a significant part of the €8m they paid Spezia for his services in 2019.

“I had my plans for the season but I couldn’t achieve it. It wasn’t that bad, wasn’t what I expected but I’m still happy with how it ended, “Okereke said.

“No, I’m not returning to Club Brugge. I was supposed to have resumed training with them but I received a mail saying there’s no need since I’m under negotiation with other teams, so I’ll take my time,” he concluded.

Npfl: Rivers Dethrone Akwa To Emerge Champions

0

Rivers United were confirmed as champions of the 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League, finishing top of Nigeria’s highest league for the first time in the club’s history with four games left to play.

This comes after second placed Plateau United suffered a 2-1 loss to Akwa United in Uyo ending their hopes of winning the NPFL title.

The defeat was Plateau’s fifth consecutive away defeat this season.

Akwa United took an early lead in the 12th minute from David Onovo’s finish to Adam Yakubu’s assist. Five minutes after conceding, Plateau United blew up a chance from Andrew Ikefe to restore parity after he failed to connect from Haggai Katoh’s set-piece.

Plateau United eventually got an equaliser in the second half from Jesse Akila’s effort in the 52nd minute.

But when the visitors must have thought they had secured a draw, Leo Ezekiel scored from Akpesiri’s pass in the third minute of added time.

Akwa United stays in seventh place with 51 points while Plateau United maintain their second spot with 61 points.

Elsewhere, Niger Tornadoes thrashed Kwara United 4-0 in Kaduna. It was another heavy defeat for Kwara United in their last three away games.

An own-goal from Adesina Gata and goals from Jonas Emmanuel, Musa Wakili, and Hashim Shamsudeen helped the Tornadoes leap to the 11th position with 45 points.

The visitors were still recovering after the first goal when Jonas Emmanuel drove his effort past Dele Aiyenugba in the 19th minute.

The defeat dented Kwara United’s continental dreams as they stay in the fifth position with 52 points.

We Will Deploy Technology In Security – Soludo On First 100 Days In Office (Full Speech)

0

Umunne m Ndi Anambra!

We have just clocked our first 100 days in office since you employed me and Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim to serve you as Governor and Deputy Governor respectively. I am not a fan of the fad about the first 100 days. I prefer to give you comprehensive annual reports and I look forward to the first one in March 2023. However, as a responsive government and as part of our periodic citizens’ engagement, we are providing this briefing on this short term milestone. We will also periodically brief and engage you as our employers, through interactive phone-in radio programmes.

As promised, we hit the ground running from the first minute after swearing-in; working for 8 hours and 45 minutes on that day, starting with a three and a half hours meeting on security. Since then, I go to the office every day and literally working 24/7 to make you proud. To be sure, the last 100 days have been bumpy and challenging as expected, with insecurity and a red treasury being the most portent, as clearly identified in our inaugural address. Since February 2022, the contribution of oil revenue from NNPC to the federation account has been zero and many states have difficulty paying salaries. Thus, with declining revenue in the context of insecurity and a mountain of debt (including over N20 billion in arrears of gratuity to pensioners since 2018) vis-à-vis the sky-high expectations from you (my employers), some fundamental disruptive changes are inevitable. I remind everyone who has tried to commiserate with me that I consciously applied for this job, and there will be no excuses. We thank you, Umunne m, for your continued solidarity and support. Together, Anambra will win!

We have spent the last 100 hundred days addressing some key foundational issues: appointed, swore-in and organized a retreat for a new cabinet within five weeks; launched the campaign to mobilize our people to take back our state from criminals and head-on systematic and comprehensive attack on insecurity to restore law and order; revised 2022 budget and provided unprecedented allocation of 64% for capital/infrastructural development as well as priority for youth development; declared a state of emergency on roads and traffic and preparing to flag-off the construction of over 220 kilometres of roads as the rains subside; getting touts out of our roads and markets; redefining the purpose and character of government focused upon service delivery as well as prudent and transparent fiscal management; ending the phenomenon of schools without teachers and hospitals without doctors by embarking on an ambitious, open and competitive process to recruit thousands of teachers as well as doctors, pharmacists and nurses for our hospitals; cleaning up the mountains of waste on our roads; working to ensure that entry into and exit from Anambra especially at Amansea and bridge-head Onitsha become pleasurable experience; signaling our urban renewal agenda with illustrative ambitious agenda for cleaning and modernizing Okpoko and Onitsha metropolis as well as other urban centres which will take greater vigor after the rainy season; laying the foundation for our everything technology and technology everywhere agenda; restructuring and digitizing our Internal Revenue Service; designing and approving a regime for a GIS and digitization of our land registry; launching a policy of never owing gratuity to new retirees and gradually paying down the backlog for the State civil service and approving same for local governments; etc.

In sum, let me assure you that so far, so bumpy but so good! Most people attest that the grave insecurity is being significantly contained, and we are unrelenting. All eyes are on the ball and we are determined to ensure that despite the daunting challenges, our State will remain on course to a livable and prosperous smart homeland. We remain focused on implementing the Soludo Solution—The People’s Manifesto, with its five driving pillars: Security, Law and Order; Economic Transformation Agenda; Social Agenda; Governance, Rule of Law and Value System; and Environment—towards a clean, green and planned sustainable communities, markets and cities. Below, we summarize some of the initiatives we have begun within the first 100 days under these pillars as follows.

Security, Law and Order

Created a new Ministry of Homeland Affairs (for homeland security) to signal the emergency and utmost priority on homeland security.

Embarked upon massive consultation, mobilization and sensitization of the citizens and critical stakeholders— including security agencies, the clergy, traditional rulers, town unions, youths, civil society organizations, businessmen and women, agitation groups, etc. We worked with South East Bishops to organize prayers; offered amnesty/carrot to repentant outlaws; etc. The people are united in fighting against the lucrative criminal enterprise and its idolatrous energizer which held the entire South senatorial zone plus Ogbaru local government hostage. The criminals masquerading as agitators have been exposed, and the nexus between crime, idolatry and hard drugs has become evident. The narrative is changing and the people are seizing the conversation and initiative.

Declared zero tolerance for criminality and drug abuse, and declared war on all criminals in Anambra State. No forest, bush or house can accommodate criminals in Anambra and government is determined to do sustained battle with them. It took some years for criminality to take deep root in parts of the State and we have a longer-term perspective on sustainable solutions.

Cohesive operational team with the State Security Council, and enhanced operational capabilities. We remain grateful to the various security agencies for the massive support and professionalism

Created Anambra State Vigilante Central Strike Force to complement the security forces to keep our forests and homeland free of the criminals.

Put several mechanical arsenal and vehicles to work

A lot of programmes are underway through the Ministry of Women Affairs, Ministry of Youth Development, the ICT Agency and other government institutions under the youth empowerment and preventive security approach.

Establishment and inauguration of the Truth, Justice and Peace Committee to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the agitation and violence in Anambra/South East; seek a restorative justice approach for truth-telling or real facts; for the healing of the victims of the violence, accounting for responsibility and accountability of the actors, conditional mercy for the repentant perpetrators, restitution for certain losses and rehabilitation of the perpetrators, for the overall aim of restoration of peace and justice as well as the promotion of development in the State/region.

Declared zero tolerance for touting (Agbero) which has endeared the government to transport owners, operators and stake holders. More programmes and projects will be unveiled in due course particularly to retrain and empower the former touts.

Citizen participation has been emboldened. We have created an avenue for connecting with the people by the provision of seven phone lines for citizens to reach the security managers of the state. There is a flood of actionable intelligence and the security forces are prompt with response.

The 6 p.m. to 6 a.m curfew on motorcycles (okada), tricycles (keke), and shuttle buses in 8 Local Government areas is a short term security measure that will be lifted in no distant time.

Work is ongoing to restructure and strengthen the community security architecture and deployment of technology in security.

Declared emergency on traffic management and the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) is being strengthened to deliver.

Economic Transformation Agenda

Works and Infrastructure
A new framework for a combination of Direct Labour Model and Outsourcing (contracting) model in the provision of roads/infrastructure as well as concessioning, public private partnership, public- community partnership, as well as rural community infrastructure development model are being worked out.

Direct Labour Intervention has been successfully deployed to rebuild the washout section of Onitsha – Enugu Federal Highway opposite Chisco Park at Onitsha as well as the Amansea section of the Enugu – Onitsha Federal High way (entry section of Anambra), at a highly cost effective rate.

Engineering design and procurement process completed and contractors soon to move to site to deal with two dangerous portions of two federal high ways which experience massive flooding each year, drowning unsuspecting commuters. These are the Ekwulobia- Nnobi federal road (Igboukwu/Isuofia boundary) and the Ogbunike – Ogidi section of the Enugu – Onitsha Road (old road).

De-silting of 1km of the Obodoukwu road, Okpoko to Idemili River end of the Sakamori storm water discharge. The exercise is still on-going and will soon move on to the Fegge/Nwangene end of the discharge drain.

Hydrological studies and hydraulic designs of storm water discharge channels as well as engineering designs almost completed for over 220 Kilometres of roads scattered all over Anambra state and these roads will all be flagged off for construction before the dry season commences.

Power and Water Resources
In the light of the Administration’s goal to attain universal electricity access for Ndi Anambra, the government reconstituted and reinvigorated the Anambra State Power Committee, which also has the EEDC as a member. The Committee recently finished a Retreat and is finalizing details of the plans and programmes (including the legal/regulatory framework) to align all the stakeholders in the electricity market in Anambra and ensure optimal performance and delivery of government’s target.

Rehabilitation of the water facilities at the Jerome Udorji Secretariat for civil servants. The Secretariat has not had water running in the offices for over eight years.

Completion of the Urban Water generation at Amuko-Uruagu, Nnewi.

Achievement of Open Defecation Free (ODF) status for Aguata LGA. This is the second local government, after Anambra East LGA to achieve such a status.

Nigerian government says it is committed to eliminating malaria as it eliminated guinea worm in the country.

President Mohammadu Buhari made the commitment in his presentation in Kigali in Rwanda at .a summit on Malaria and other Neglected Tropical Diseases, NTD’s, on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, CHOGM.

The Nigerian Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, who made the presentation on behalf of the Nigerian said the menace of malaria can be curbed in Commonwealth countries through multilateral collaboration amongst Commonwealth and adequate funding the health care sector.

President Buhari announced that about 23 million Nigerian children have received the seasonal malaria chemoprevention, aiding reduction in severe malaria in children in the country.

He tasked Commonwealth leaders to renew commitment toward eliminating the disease while assuring best efforts by his government to mobilise domestic resources in the fight against NTDs and malaria.

He announced that Nigeria had secured 300 million dollars from the World Bank and from the Islamic Development Bank to cover essential malaria programmes and strengthen Primary Healthcare.

The president added that fatalities caused by malaria in parts of Africa mostly affect children and pregnant women, and urged low-income countries to join forces together to end the challenge.

The Summit culminated with a Call to Action, focusing on the specific actions needed to end malaria and NTDs once and for all.

The summit, hosted by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, featured commitments totaling more than four billion dollars including funding from governments, international organisations, philanthropists, and private sector support.

Malaria: Nasarawa Inaugurate Seasonal Chemo-Prevention Campaign

0

The Nasarawa state government has inaugurated the round 2 seasonal chemo-prevention campaign on malaria to tackle the life-threatening disease across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.

The State Commissioner for Health, Pharm. Ahmed Yahaya disclosed this in Lafia on Friday during a media parley aimed at sensitising residents of the state on how to tackle the disease.

He explained that due to the state government’s efforts in recent time, the burden of malaria had drastically reduced from sixty percent to thirty percent and currently to fourteen point six percent.

The Commissioner for Health narrated that in the first implementation, over ten thousand personnel were involved and a total of seven hundred and seventy five thousand, nine hundred and five children between ages of three to fifty nine months across the 13 LGAs of the state were reached.

He added that for the round 2 implemention, over nine thousand personnel have been engaged with a target of eight thousand children across the state.
