Nigeria’s Foremost Maize Farming Company Commissions Multi-million Naira Cornflakes Plant

0

The Chairman NASCO Group Nigeria, Dr Attia Nasreddin, has said that the new NASCO Food Limited cornflakes plant would contribute immensely to food security in Nigeria.

He noted that most Nigerian children take cornflakes on a daily basis which has enriched the consumption of vitamin A among children, pregnant women and nursing mothers in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan consumers.

Dr Nasreddin disclosed this during the unveiling and commissioning ceremony of a new multi-million naira cornflakes plant, “Farm2Home”, which was held at company headquarters in Jos, Plateau State.

“Nigerian farmers help to safeguard the country’s food security now and in the future. Food security in itself is futile if it does not reach Nigerian households,” Dr Nasreddin stated.

“Through our cornflakes plant, NASCO foods have worked relentlessly to bridge the gap between Nigerian homes and the inherent goodness of Nigerian maize.

“This new plant will continue to flake the rich yellow maize we use ensuring that NASCO cornflakes are fortified with vitamin A. We are aware of the high levels of vitamin A deficiency that have been reported in our populations. Nearly 30% among children, 19% among pregnant women and 13 % among nursing mothers.”

He said the product has been endorsed by the Nutrition Society of Nigeria.

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong described NASCO as the most successful industry in Nigeria which has become a household name.

“On a larger economic scale, long before government started to promote self-sufficiency in food production – a policy which encouraged Nigerians to produce what they eat, NASCO’s adoption of the policy of back-ward integration in sourcing maize as its chief input for the production of cornflakes had empowered thousands of farmers on the Plateau and across many locations in central Nigeria,” the governor stated.

“This had directly impacted on the volume and quality of the maize that its suppliers were cultivating.

Cumulatively, this process now integrates into the Buhari administration’s drive to develop the agriculture commodity supply chain, for which maize has been recognised as one of the most important commodities.”

Governor Lalong encouraged the business community and all citizens to be good ambassadors of Plateau State by bringing out issues that will promote the corporate existence of the people to attract local and foreign investors.

“We should avoid carelessly de-marketing the state on account of one minor unpleasant incidence. When we go to the social media and elsewhere to spread exaggerated or fake news that creates fear and anxiety in the heart of prospective investors, it discourages them from coming to do business in the state.

“We are glad that NASCO resisted this temptation over the years and today, they are the leading manufacturing company not only in Plateau State but in the country.”

The governor urged NASCO to continue to be the torchbearer that paves the way for investors to take advantage of the state’s serene environment.

Just In – Roe V. Wade: Missouri Becomes 1st U.S. State To Outlaw Abortion

0

Missouri on Friday became the first US state to outlaw abortion after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, a 1973 ruling that federally protected the right to abortion.

“Following the [Supreme Court of the United States] ruling overturning Roe v Wade, Missouri has just become the first in the country to effectively end abortion with our [attorney general] opinion signed moments ago,” Missouri’s Attorney General Eric Schmitt said on Twitter.

“This is a monumental day for the sanctity of life.”

Missouri’s Republican Governor Mike Parson said in a statement: “We are happy that the US Supreme Court has corrected this error and returned power to the people and the states to make these decisions.

“Today, our efforts have produced what generations of Missourians have worked and prayed for.

“Today, we have won our fight to protect innocent life.”

Missouri’s law creates criminal liability for abortion providers, but establishes protections for women who receive abortions from criminal prosecutions.

President Joe Biden spoke out against the court’s decision.

“State laws banning abortion are automatically taking effect today — jeopardising the health of millions of women, some without exceptions.”

Friday’s ruling effectively gave US states the right to make their own decisions on abortion rights.

“Since taking office, I have always fought to protect the unborn. Because of our action today, millions of lives will be protected moving forward,” Mr Schmitt said in another tweet on Friday.

More than a dozen states across the US have passed so-called trigger legislation that will introduce abortion ban laws within 30 days of the Supreme Court decision.

These include Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Former vice president Mike Pence called on every US state to pass an abortion ban.

India 2022: Flamingos’ World Cup Opponents To Emerge In Zurich On Friday

0

Nigeria’s opponents at this year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals will emerge on Friday afternoon during the draw ceremony scheduled for the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.

Already, an Asiatic lioness nicknamed Ibha has been revealed as the Official Mascot of the 16-nation championship, which will hold from Friday 11th – Sunday 30th October in three Indian cities of Bhubaneswar, Goa and Navi Mumbai.

Nigeria, Morocco and Tanzania will fly Africa’s flag, to contend for the trophy against hosts India, China, Japan, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Germany, Spain and France in the seventh edition of the biennial tournament that was launched in New Zealand 14 years ago.

India hosted the FIFA U17 World Cup for the boys in 2018 and were slated to host the girls’ event two years ago, but the covid-19 pandemic aborted that, necessitating a postponement and scaling down of the original host cities to three.

The Flamingos, who have featured in every tournament since 2008 bar the 2018 edition staged by Uruguay, prevailed over the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt and Ethiopia on the African continent to land in India.

On Friday, Nigeria will be in Pot 3, alongside France, USA and China (meaning they will not be in the same group with any of those three). Hosts India occupy top spot in Pot 1 alongside Japan, Spain and Germany, with Mexico, Canada, Brazil and New Zealand in Pot 2. Pot 4 comprises Tanzania (playing at their first World Cup), Chile, Colombia and Morocco.

Swiss Appeals Court Convicts Ex-Fifa General Secretary Valcke

0

Former FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke returns to the Swiss Federal Criminal Court (Bundesstrafgericht) in Bellinzona, Switzerland September 14, 2020.

A Swiss appeals court found former FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke guilty of forging documents and accepting bribes in a case involving World Cup media rights, it said on Friday.

The 61-year-old, who was secretary general of the world soccer body from 2007 to 2015, was sentenced to 11 months in jail and fined 20,000 Swiss francs ($20,900). Both penalties were suspended.

Valcke had been cleared by a lower court in 2020 of accepting bribes and aggravated criminal mismanagement, but Swiss prosecutors appealed against that verdict.

The benefits Valcke – who the appeals court acquitted on a separate charge of aggravated dishonest management – allegedly received included the rent-free use of a villa in Sardinia.

The property was owned by Nasser Al-Khelaifi, chairman of French soccer club Paris Saint-Germain and of Qatar-based media group beIN Sports.

Valcke was also accused of accepting payments worth 1.25 million euros ($1.32 million) from a third defendant, a Greek businessman also convicted of bribery by the appeals court, linked to the awarding of media rights for FIFA World and Confederations Cups

The appeals trial of Valcke and Al-Khelaifi, who had denied bribery charges, was held in March.

The appeals court, which reached its verdicts on Thursday, acquitted Al-Khelaifi of inciting Valcke to commit criminal mismanagement.

Al-Khelaifi, 48, had denied at the appeals trial that he had struck a “corrupt arrangement” with Valcke. “That is totally wrong. It’s a false accusation,” he testified.

Valcke, who has been banned from all football-related activity until mid-2032 by FIFA’s ethics committee, told the appeals court his professional and financial situation had deteriorated since 2015 as he had no income.

“My health is all I have left,” he said.

Valcke had said he had asked Al-Khelaifi to help him as a friend back in 2013 because he was facing difficulties financing the purchase of the villa and of a new boat.

Valcke also said his request was not related to negotiations going on at the same time for World Cup media rights, adding the contract signed between beIN Sports and FIFA, also a party in the case, was financially very attractive for the world soccer body.

Some 23 million Nigerian children have received the seasonal malaria chemoprevention, aiding reduction in severe malaria in children in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari made the declaration on Friday in Kigali at the Summit on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

The summit is part of activities at the on-going 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the Rwandan capital.

He tasked Commonwealth leaders to renew commitment toward eliminating the disease while assuring best efforts by his government to mobilise domestic resources in the fight against NTDs and malaria.

He announced that Nigeria had secured 300 million dollars from the World Bank and from the Islamic Development Bank to cover essential malaria programmes and strengthen Primary Healthcare.

The president added that fatalities caused by malaria in parts of Africa mostly affect children and pregnant women, and urged low-income countries to join forces together to end the challenge.

The summit, hosted by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, featured commitments totalling more than four billion dollars including funding from governments, international organisations, philanthropists, and private sector support.

Pharmaceutical companies also donated 18 billion tablets for preventing and treating NTDs

The roundtable discussion with filmmakers in the United Kingdom was facilitated by the Africa Film Academy, the curators of Africa Movie Academy Awards, AMAA, in collaboration with the James Currey Society.

World Bank To Help Tackle Malnutrition In Philippines

0

The World Bank has approved 178.1 million U.S. dollar loan on Thursday to support the Philippines’ efforts in addressing malnutrition.

The Washington-based bank said it will support the delivery of nutrition and health care services at the primary care and community levels to help reduce stunting that is characterised by prolonged nutritional deficiency among infants and young children.

Ndiame Diop, the World Bank Country Director said improving the nutritional status of children is key to the Southeast Asian country’s goals of boosting human capital while strengthening the economic recovery and prospects for long-term growth.

Globally, food prices, already on the rise since the second half of 2020, have reached a record high this year, leading to food security problems worldwide.

Unless immediate action is taken, millions of children “will face the increased risk of undernutrition,” the bank warned.

FCT Minister Inaugurates PHC Donated By Rotary Club

0

The Minister of state in the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, has inaugurated a Primary Health Care facility donated by the Rotary Club of Abuja, Karu Housing Estate.

Speaking at the official Inuguration and Handover of the facility at the Healthcare Centre, Jikwoyi, Aliyu expressed optimism that the gesture would help boost the quality of healthcare available to residents of the area.

The minister also said that the donation marks the successes recorded in community partnership and participation as well as the collective efforts at strengthening the Primary Health Care scheme in the FCT.

“The fact that Rotary Club constructed and completed this Primary Healthcare facility to support healthcare delivery system in the territory is not a surprise to most of us because of your antecedents at the Rotary Foundation.

“Rotary Club is no doubt an upright Non- Governmental Organization and one that stays true to an unwavering commitment to saving lives.

“FCT has benefitted immensely from your wealth of experience, passion and focused contributions to eradicating the wild polio virus globally and strengthening Routine Immunization programme. Our partnership with you, among others, has seen FCT being wild polio free for over 7 years as the last case was confirmed in the first quarter of 2013.

“You have strengthened our PHC facilities structures and system at Dutsen Garki, Piwoyi, Sauka amongst others,” she added.

Aliyu who emphasised that health is a fundamental human right, added that this would however require the Primary Health Care approach which allows for integrated care comprising preventive, promote, curative and rehabilitative services extending from “womb to tomb.”

She said, “The first point of contact with the National Health System and a key to socio economic development and progress of a country. It includes essential health care, universally accessible, acceptable, affordable, adaptable, appropriate, and active community participation.

“As a matter of fact, Universal Health Coverage cannot be achieved without the involvement of the local community. II sincerely and respectfully commend Rotary Club of Abuja, Karu Housing Estate for deepening community engagement for Primary Health Care management in the FCT.”

The minister while commending the Rotary Club of Abuja, Karu Housing Estate for the gesture, assured that the FCT Administration, through its Primary Health Care Board, would take charge of the facility by providing the necessary manpower needed so as to improve the quality of care for residents of the area especially women and children.

She, therefore, urged the personnel in the facility to observe Standard Operating Procedures in taking care of clients, even as she assured that the Administration would continue to strengthen the existing healthcare facilities across the six area councils to meet the high demand of its residents.

The President of Rotary Club of Abuja, Karu Housing Estate, Rtn. Vurinrin Anita Ifidon, revealed that the club had over six years ago carried out several projects within Rotary’s seven core areas of focus which include disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy amongst others.

She also stated that the initial foundation of the Primary Healthcare was laid in the 80s but was abandoned during late President Shehu Shagari’s regime, stressing that through determination and focus, the club brought it to fruition.

Ifidon, however, appealed to FCT Administration and other critical stakeholders to support community projects, noting that community needs are overwhelming.

According to her, “Apart from primary healthcare, the people of Jikwoyi are in dire need of portable water. We will like to seek partnership with your office in our humble quest and desire to give our communities a phase lift.”

Recall that the Primary Healthcare Centre has been equipped with hospital beds, bed drawers, examination couch, dressing materials, forcept kits, trolley, auto clave machine, refrigerator, microscope, amongst other equipment.
