The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, has urged the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to call off the ongoing industrial action by the university lecturers in the country.

He added that JAMB would continue to prune down its expenses through prudent management, adoption of relevant cost saving technology and other efficiency strategies to free up resources to support major stakeholders such as the tertiary health and educational institutions in order to uplift the health and educational institutions.

He said that the intervention was for 12 benefiting health facilities in all the six geopolitical zones in the country.

Taiwan Thanks World Cup Organisers After China Reference Removed From Fan Ids

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry expressed thanks on Thursday after organisers of the World Cup in Qatar removed a reference to China for Taiwanese visitors applying for an identification card that doubles as an entry visa.

All World Cup ticketholders must apply for the Hayya card used to identify fans, which also serves as their Qatar visa, but Taiwan’s government expressed concern after discovering the online application system made no mention of the island.

It was subsequently listed as, “Taiwan, Province of China”, terminology that equally angers Taiwan’s government and many of its people.

However, late on Wednesday the system began listing the island simply as “Taiwan”, complete with the Taiwanese flag.

It marks a rare victory for Taiwan, whose government and many of its people bristle at China’s sovereignty claims.

Taiwan Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou told reporters this was a “positive development”, and expressed appreciation for the fast reaction by the organisers.

“We express our thanks and affirmation for this goodwill,” Ou added.

The World Cup organisers have yet to comment on the change.

When asked about the complaints made to the Qatar World Cup organisers by Taiwan officials, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday he wished to reiterate that “Taiwan is part of China”.

Taiwan competes at most international sporting competitions like the Olympics as “Chinese Taipei” to avoid political problems. It has not qualified for the Qatar World Cup, but soccer is popular in Taiwan.

Taiwan has never played at the World Cup finals and crashed out in the second round of Asian qualifying for the 2022 tournament last year after losing all eight matches.

Taiwan has no diplomatic relations with Qatar, which, like most countries, only recognises China’s government.

China, seeking to assert its sovereignty claims, has been stepping up pressure for countries and foreign companies to refer to Taiwan as part of China in official documents and on websites, often using the wording “Taiwan, Province of China”, or “Taiwan, China”.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino says he expects soccer to be the biggest sport in North America in time for the 2026 World Cup as the host cities for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico were announced on Thursday.

World soccer governing body FIFA announced the 16 cities – 11 in the United States, three in Mexico and two in Canada – that were successful from the 22 bids put forward in a special event at the Rockefeller Center in New York.

However, there was no indication where the opening game or the final would be played.

“By 2026 soccer or football will be the number one sport in this part of the world,” Infantino boldly predicted as fans in the newly-appointed host cities celebrated.

The United States, which staged the tournament in 1994, will host games in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami and New York/New Jersey.

Mexico, who hosted the World Cup in 1970 and 1986, will stage matches in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, while Canada, which is staging the men’s event for the first time, will do so in Vancouver and Toronto.

“It was the most competitive process for a FIFA World Cup, we’ll have the world coming here, we’ll have an exciting tournament,” Infantino said.

He added that no decision had been taken on where the final would take place.

“There are still some discussions to go on and we will certainly choose the best cities there as well for the opening and the final, but every match will be a final in this World Cup,” Infantino said.

Cincinnati, Denver, Nashville, Orlando, Washington DC/Baltimore and Edmonton were the six cities that missed out.

FANS WAVING

Cheering fans waving American, Canadian and Mexican flags gathered outside the venue in New York, with U.S. national team member and 23-year-old Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic among those in attendance for the announcement.

San Francisco’s Levi’s Stadium hosted a private watch party and New York City Mayor Eric Adams was expected at a watch party in New Jersey’s Liberty State Park.

Canadian national team player and Toronto native Jonathan Osorio said that as a child he could not have imagined seeing a World Cup in his home country.

“It’s amazing – it’s amazing that the World Cup is finally coming to Canada… it’s an amazing feat for the whole country,” he said.

Celebrities including Michael Buble (representing Vancouver), Magic Johnson (Los Angeles), Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City), F1 driver Sergio Perez (Guadalajara) and Gloria Estefan (Miami) offered on-screen messages celebrating the inclusion of their hometowns.

The 2026 tournament is expected to smash World Cup attendance records, which peaked at 3.6 million when it was held in the United States in 1994.

It will also be the first time 48 teams will feature in the tournament, an increase from the 32 that will contest this year’s event in Qatar.

“To be a part of it (the Qatar World Cup) and then to have one in this country is going to be amazing,” Pulisic said.

Sadio Mane Leaves Liverpool For Bayern Munich

0

Reigning African soccer king, Senegal’s Sadio Mane is set to become Bayern Munich’s third signing of the transfer window as he bids Liverpool farewell after six seasons.

He is the latest signing at Bayern following the arrivals of Ajax pair Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazrouai, who both joined last week.

Sadio Mane is leaving Liverpool after the Reds reached a £35.1m agreement with the German side.

The Senegalese leaves Anfield having scored 120 goals in 269 appearances for the club, where he had one year remaining on his contract.

Mane won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup with the Reds, while he was also in the sides that lost Champions League finals in 2018 and 2022.

Having joined from  Southampton for £34million in 2016, the forward became one of the key pillars of Jurgen Klopp’s side, forming a deadly attacking trio with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah after the latter joined in 2017.

Liverpool agreed to a structured deal for Mane which includes a guaranteed £27.5million, with £5million based on appearances and a further £2.6m on individual and team accolades.

They had earlier rejected two bids from the German giants based on the nature of the bonus clauses, but a breakthrough in talks was achieved after a Bayern delegation flew to Merseyside on Friday
