Bank Of England Under Intense Pressure To Raise Rates

0

The Bank of England is under pressure to raise interest rates more aggressively amid concern that the quarter-percentage-point hike expected Thursday will do little to combat price increases that have pushed inflation to a 40-year high.

While the United Kingdom’s central bank began raising interest rates earlier than its counterparts, the Bank of England is now trailing the U.S. Federal Reserve in the worldwide fight against inflation fueled by soaring food and energy prices.

The Fed raised its benchmark rate by three-quarters of a percentage point Wednesday, pushing it to a range of 1.5% to 1.75%. The Bank of England’s key rate is 1% following four consecutive quarter-point increases that began in December.

“It is quickly becoming apparent that more radical action is needed for the Bank of England to establish some sense of stability, because tinkering around the edges simply isn’t cutting it,” Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK, said in a note to clients.

The war in Ukraine has boosted food and energy prices as the fighting disrupts shipments of oil, natural gas, grain and cooking oil. That is adding to price increases that began last year as the global economy started to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Bank of England last month forecast that inflation would accelerate to more than 10% later this year after reaching 9% in April, already the highest since 1982. The bank’s inflation target is 2%.

Bank of England policymakers have been cautious about raising interest rates too quickly, arguing that many of the inflationary pressures facing the British economy are external and beyond the bank’s control.

But price increases are now becoming embedded in the economy, fueling demands for higher wages and slowing economic growth as consumers and businesses curtail purchases.

Figures released this week by the Office for National Statistics showed that economic output stagnated in February and shrank by 0.1% in March, raising concerns that Britain may be headed for a recession.

The World Bank last week downgraded its outlook for the global economy and raised concerns about the return of “stagflation” — the combination of high inflation and sluggish growth last seen in the 1980s.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell acknowledged the challenges facing monetary policymakers when he spoke to reporters Wednesday.

Australia Commits To Reducing Greenhouse Emissions By 43%

0

With Climate change action getting even more controversial, Australia’s new government on Thursday formally committed to a more ambitious greenhouse gas reduction target of 43% by the end of the decade in fulfillment of a key election pledge.

The previous conservative government was dumped by voters at the May 21 election after it stuck to a seven-year-old pledge to reduce Australia’s emissions by only 26% to 28% below 2005 levels by 2030.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had written to U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change executive secretary Patricia Espinosa Cantellano to inform her of Australia’s new 2030 target.

Albanese said legislation to enshrine the new target in law would be introduced to the new Parliament which will sit for the first time on July 26. However the target did not depend on Parliament’s approval.

Investment in Australia’s energy sector had been held up during the previous government’s nine years in power due to the administration’s failure to agree on a climate policy, Albanese said.

“What businesses have been crying out for is investment certainty,” Albanese said. “The certainty that they need to invest over a longer time frame than the political cycle of three years.”

Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of coal and liquified natural gas which makes reducing dependence on fossil fuels a politically vexed issue. The previous government was widely considered a laggard among wealthy countries in combating climate change.

The United States has committed to reductions of between 50% and 52% below 2005 levels by 2030. Britain has pledged to cut emissions by 68% below 1990 levels.

Albanese’s government could face pressure in a new, greener Parliament to adopt an even more ambitious target.

Several seats have yet to be declared as counting continues following the election.

The center-left Labor Party administration will likely hold a narrow majority of 77 seats in the 151-seat House of Representatives where a majority of lawmakers is needed to form government.

A record 16 lawmakers in the House will not be aligned with either the government or opposition.

Capacity Diminishing Due To Climate Change Agenda – American Petroleum Institute

0

The American Petroleum Institute, which represents the industry, said in a statement that capacity has been diminished as the Biden administration has sought to move away from fossil fuels as part of its climate change agenda.

“While we appreciate the opportunity to open increased dialogue with the White House, the administration’s misguided policy agenda shifting away from domestic oil and natural gas has compounded inflationary pressures and added headwinds to companies’ daily efforts to meet growing energy needs while reducing emissions,” API CEO Mike Sommers said in a statement.

Sommers added, “I reinforced in a letter to President Biden and his Cabinet yesterday ten meaningful policy actions to ultimately alleviate pain at the pump and strengthen national security, including approving critical energy infrastructure, increasing access to capital, holding energy lease sales, among other urgent priorities.”

The letter is unlikely to start a chain of events that would boost supplies. Refineries have gone through unprecedented, unplanned maintenance globally in the last three months and there is an extreme shortage being felt across the globe, said Claudio Galimberti, senior vice president at Rystad Energy. China’s decision to limit its exports of oil products also contributed to the problem, he said.

“U.S. refiners cannot increase capacity beyond current levels,” Galimberti said. “If they could, they would have done it already.”

As Biden sees it, refineries are capitalizing on the uncertainties caused by “a time of war.” His message that corporate greed is contributing to higher prices has been controversial among many economists, yet the claim may have some resonance with voters.

Some liberal lawmakers have proposed cracking down on corporate profits amid the higher inflation.

The president has harshly criticized what he views as profiteering amid a global crisis that could potentially push Europe and other parts of the world into a recession, saying after a speech Friday that ExxonMobil “made more money than God this year.” ExxonMobil responded by saying it has already informed the administration of its planned investments to increase oil production and refining capacity.

Biden Tells U.S Oil Refiners To Produce More Gas, Fewer Profits

0

U.S President Joe Biden on Wednesday called on U.S. oil refiners to produce more gasoline and diesel, saying their profits have tripled during a time of war between Russia and Ukraine as Americans struggle with record high prices at the pump.

“The crunch that families are facing deserves immediate action,” Biden wrote in a letter to seven oil refiners. “Your companies need to work with my Administration to bring forward concrete, near-term solutions that address the crisis.”

Gas prices nationwide are averaging roughly $5 a gallon, an economic burden for many Americans and a political threat for the president’s fellow Democrats going into the midterm elections. Broader inflation began to rise last year as the U.S. economy recovered from the coronavirus pandemic, but it accelerated in recent months as energy and food prices climbed after Russia invaded Ukraine in February and disrupted global commodity markets.

The government reported on Friday that consumer prices had jumped 8.6% from a year ago, the worst increase in more than 40 years.

The letter notes that gas prices were averaging $4.25 a gallon when oil was last near the current price of $120 a barrel in March. That 75-cent difference in average gas prices in a matter of just a few months reflects both a shortage of refinery capacity and profits that “are currently at their highest levels ever recorded,” the letter states.

Primary Education: Federal Government Approves 109 E-Learning Centres

0

Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council has approved the sum of N964 million for the provision of satellite-based education system equipment in three primary schools in each of the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, revealed this at the end of the Council’s meeting, chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, in Abuja.

He revealed that the Minister of Education has obtained council’s approval for the award of contract for the provision of a satellite-based education system for 109 e-Learning centres across the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

The contract is for the sum of N964 million and the purpose of the memo is to provide each senatorial district in the country with an e-Learning provision.

Each State has three senatorial districts and the FCT has one, making it 109.

According to the minister, the scope of the project is the provision of a satellite-based education system for 4,360 users in the senatorial districts, including the installation of 109 receiver satellite unit modems, servers and antennas in three schools in each state.

He also said 4,360 android tablets and 109 solar units would be deployed to the benefiting schools.

While commenting on the ongoing strike by university lecturers, the minister noted that contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the federal government is taking the necessary steps to ensure that the lecturers call off the strike, to enable students to return to their classes.

Smart Blocks: A tech show for everyone

0
Smart blocks graphics

Smart Blocks is a tech show on LN247 that showcases blockchain technology and cryptocurrency education as an economic tool rather than an isolated complex technology.

The idea of smart blocks originated out of the desire to simplify blockchain technology  and cryptocurrency in the easiest form.

Smart blocks was born out of LN247 partnership with Crypto Smart as their official correspondence on blockchain technology.

According to Karla Obakpolor, founder of Crypto Smart, “the goal of smart blocks is to showcase companies, stories, personalities, successes in Africa and Nigeria who are building relevance products using information technology like AI, blockchain technology or Distributed Ledger Systems”

The aim of smart blocks as a tech show is centered on teaching about blockchain technology.

Nevertheless, to some people, blockchain technology still remains a mystery while some people are already using blockchain technology to solve real life human problems.

Smart blocks will also serve as a medium to showcase companies leveraging the blockchain technology to provide real life solutions.

Specific features of Smart Blocks

Blockchain and cryptocurrency education

Education, according to Fafunwa, is the aggregate of all the processes through which a child or young adult develops the attitudes, skills and behaviors which are of positive value to the society in which he lives.

Blockchain is a shared, immutable ledger that facilitates the process of recording transactions and tracking assets on a business network.

Blockchain and cryptocurrency still remain the same to some people while some people did not even understand anything about the technology.

Smart Blocks, through a well planned step by step educational programmes will help to demystify the blockchain technology and cryptocurrency.

Another aspect of the blockchain education is the enlightenment about upcoming crypto projects such as the Nigeria IPR project launched on Algorand blockchain.

Companies’ highlight

It is a good thing to know about new technology but It is another thing to know how it is applicable to humans.

Many crypto projects and startups have leveraged the blockchain technology to create solutions.

One of such suction is Bitsave protocol, a saving + Decentralized finance (SaveFi) to be built on Algorand blockchain.

Smart Blocks will help founders and businesses to showcase their ideas.

This in turn will help people to know more about how blockchain technology is being used in real life.

Personal finance and management

Smart block is not about technology alone. It is a tech show that encompasses all areas of human development.

It won’t be far from the truth to say that, experts in blockchain technology acquire certain skills while dealing with cryptocurrency.

One of such skills is personal finance which is the basis of wealth as highlighted by Grant Cardone.

Management on the other hand is more like a way of life. Smart blocks will reiterate management skills needed as individuals in crypto space.

Not only that, starting a project or founding a company in blockchain technology might be a bit different from a traditional system.

Nevertheless, it still requires certain management skills which will be discussed by experienced blockchain business developers during the well aligned shows.

Stories and personalities

Storytelling is one of the best sources of motivation ever.

This is one of the reasons why smart blocks will be an avenue for crypto enthusiasts and prominent personalities to tell their own story.

Telling their stories will help them to link their current stage with their starting point which can be replicated over and over again to generate similar or extraordinary results.

All these and many more are what makes up SMART BLOCKS

The World Health Organisation has decried the rate of skin-related Neglected Tropical Diseases and it effects on lives.

It is geared at fashioning a viable framework for its control and management through common learning platforms, capacity-building for case detection, and delivery of treatment.

In a release published on its website on Tuesday, the agency averred that skin diseases had afflicted hundreds of millions of people, resulting in immense discomfort, suffering, stigmatisation, and mental distress’.

WHO’s leading health expert on skin NTDs, Dr. Kingsley Asiedu, while analysing the steps needed to arrest the situation, noted that only a well-coordinated framework could nip in the bud the challenges posed by skin diseases across the globe, in consonance with the Sustainable Development Goals.

He said, ‘‘The operational cross-cutting approaches for integrating activities and data-reporting will improve the monitoring and evaluation of all skin NTDs.”

Gombe to deploy 14,300 officials for mass immunisation campaigns against killer diseases

No fewer than 14,300 Gombe State officials are to participate in the Integrated Mass immunisation Campaign Against Measles, Yellow Fever, Meningitis, Tetanus, Polio, and vitamin A deficiency, commencing on the 16th of June 2022.

Disclosing this on Wednesday during a media briefing, Dr. Habu Dahiru, Commissioner for Health, Gombe State, said the officials would be trained to deliver on the assignment.

He stated that about 3.1 million persons were expected to benefit from the exercise, adding that vaccination teams would be at fixed posts in health facilities, temporary posts within communities, and mobile posts at special places, such as mosques, churches, schools, and playgrounds.

The Commissioner said, “We have 14,300 personnel. They are vaccinators, recorders, community influencers, and those who coordinate the activities and the team supervisors. We also have community leaders.

We will have to do refresher training for them so that we don’t get adverse effects.”

He revealed the statistics of previous outbreaks from April 2022 based on confirmed laboratory cases, noting that they include; Measles 114 cases, Meningitis 12 cases, adding that efforts were on to forestall a resurgence.

“We are all aware that diseases such as Measles, Yellow fever, Meningitis, Tetanus, Polio, and vitamin A deficiency amongst others still pose a major challenge to public health,” he added.

Abia Doctors embark on indefinite Strike over colleague’s abduction

0

Medical Doctors in Abia, under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association, on Tuesday, began an indefinite strike to protest against the abduction of their colleague, Prof. Uwadinachi Iweha.

The body announced its decision to withdraw its services at a rally and prayer session held at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.

The Chairman of the association, Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, told newsmen that Iweha was abducted by unknown gunmen on Sunday, June 6, in front of his house at Umuajameze Ezeleke Umuokpara in Umuahia South Local Government Area.

Okwuonu said that the victim was taken away with his Toyota Highlander and that they had neither seen nor heard from him since then.

He said that the association was deeply worried by his continued detention by his assailants, hence their prayer for God’s intervention.

“As an association, we contacted the relevant security agencies and the Government of Abia and until today, Tuesday, we have yet to hear from our colleague or see him.

“We are worried that nine days down the line, Iweha is still within the kidnappers’ den.

“This is traumatic, depressing, dehumanising and has instilled a lot of fear within the medical community.

“Our earnest prayer is that his health condition does not deteriorate further and he comes back alive to us and his family,” Okwuonu said.

The association, therefore, condemned the kidnap and called on Abia Government and security agencies to take necessary measures to secure Iweha’s release.

It argued that the recent spate of kidnapping in the state, perceived as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, had eroded the achievements made in the area of security.

It further said: “With the current state of fear caused by the kidnap and detention of our colleague, safety cannot be guaranteed.

“Also, it will be difficult to attend to duties as normal because no one knows who will be the next victim.

“Today, Tuesday, June 14, the NMA Abia has commenced a withdrawal of services in both public and private sectors to register its deep displeasure at this unfortunate incident.

Abia Doctors protest

“This is to give its members time to join the family in searching for its member.

“However, emergency services are still going on to enable our members to attend to critical patients.”

The association appealed to any member of the public with useful information about the whereabouts of the victim to report the same to the nearest police station.

It described Iweha as elderly, fair in complexion, about 5ft 2inch tall and last seen on a white chieftaincy top on grey trousers.

It thanked the President of the NMA, Dr. Uche Ojinmah, and members of the National Officers Committee for identifying with Abia over the unfortunate incident.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the victim is a former Chief Medical Director, Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba and Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia.

He is presently the Provost, Gregory University College of Medicine, Umuahia Campus.
