Daniil Medvedev Replaces Novak Djokovic As World Number One

0

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has replaced Novak Djokovic at the top of the world rankings, two weeks before a Wimbledon at which he will not be allowed to play.

Wimbledon has been stripped of its ranking points over its decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

However, that decision means Medvedev, 26, is likely to increase his lead over Djokovic at the end of the tournament because the Serb is defending champion so has more ranking points to lose.

Djokovic has dropped to world number three, with the injured Alexander Zverev rising to second.

It is the first time since November 2003 that none of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Andy Murray have appeared in the top two rankings spots.

Medvedev became the first player other than Djokovic, Nadal, Federer or Murray to top the men’s rankings since American Andy Roddick 18 years ago when he briefly replaced Djokovic as number one in February.

World number one Daniil Medvedev will not be allowed to compete at Wimbledon, while number two Alexander Zverev is injured

Wimbledon excluded Russian and Belarusian players from participating this year because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – leading the governing bodies of the men’s and women’s games, the ATP and WTA, to remove ranking points from the Slam.

Serbia’s Djokovic, a six-time Wimbledon champion, will lose the 2,000 ranking points he secured when he lifted the men’s title at SW19 last year.

Medvedev and Germany’s Zverev only stand to lose 180 points, having gone out in the fourth round last year.

The Russian was beaten in straight sets by Marin Cilic in the fourth round of the French Open and suffered a shock defeat by Dutch wildcard Tim van Rijthoven, the world number 205, in the final of the Libema Open in the Netherlands on Sunday.

Van Rijthoven, 24, stunned Medvedev 6-4 6-1 in 65 minutes to clinch a maiden ATP title in front of his home crowd on just his second appearance in a tour-level main draw. He had not won a tour-level match prior to the tournament.

Zverev, a semi-finalist at Roland Garros, is likely to miss several weeks after having surgery on his torn ankle ligaments last week.

Meanwhile, world number four and French Open champion Rafael Nadal is recovering from treatment on a chronic foot condition.

Norway’s French Open runner-up Casper Ruud, 23, replaces Stefanos Tsitsipas in the top five for the first time.

Mauricio Pochettino: Paris St-Germain Coach To Leave After Talks With Club

0

Coach Mauricio Pochettino is to leave Paris St-Germain following talks with the club at the end of last week.

PSG are still to make a formal announcement but it is understood the former Tottenham manager, 50, will not serve the final year of his contract.

Zinedine Zidane, Jose Mourinho and Nice coach Christophe Galtier are among those linked with replacing Pochettino.

PSG regained the French title last term but the Argentine failed to lead them beyond the Champions League’s last 16.

Although they were beaten by eventual winners Real Madrid, PSG held a 2-0 aggregate advantage with less than half an hour remaining in their second leg.

Pochettino claimed the first trophies of his managerial career with PSG – the 2021 Coupe de France and 2022 Ligue 1 title – but the club’s hierarchy felt that was the minimum he should achieve given the squad at his disposal.

The ex-Spurs manager was considered a potential replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United before they appointed interim boss Ralf Rangnick and then Solskjaer’s permanent successor Erik ten Hag.

Lewis Hamilton To Race At Canadian Grand Prix And ‘Wouldn’t Miss It For The World’ Despite Pain

0

Lewis Hamilton says he will be at the Canadian Grand Prix and “wouldn’t miss it for the world” despite experiencing pain in Sunday’s race in Baku.

The Briton had said he was “worried” about the upcoming race in Montreal following what he described as “the toughest race” of his career.

“Yesterday was tough and I had some trouble sleeping, but I’ve woken up feeling positive today,” Hamilton said.

“My back is a little sore and bruised but nothing serious thankfully.”

The seven-time world champion added in an Instagram post: “I’ve had acupuncture and physiotherapy and I’m on my way to my team to work with them on improving.

“We have to keep fighting. I’ll be there this weekend – I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

The high-speed bouncing of his car meant the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, in which Hamilton finished fourth, was “the most painful” race he has experienced.

He added that the car was bouncing so badly at the start of Baku’s pit straight that he thought he might crash.

Mercedes have been afflicted by bouncing, which has a number of causes, since the beginning of the year.

Team boss Toto Wolff said the driver was “definitely” a doubt for the Canadian Grand Prix following Sunday’s race, but Hamilton tweeted later on Sunday to tell his fans he would see them all next week.

Gareth Bale to Cardiff City? Now that would be a signing.

II his latest interview, Bale has suggested the standard of football he plays before the World Cup does not make “too much of a difference”.

The Wales star, a free agent following the end of his nine-year stay at Real Madrid, has been linked with Premier League outfit Newcastle and MLS teams in the United States.

But Bale’s hometown club Cardiff could also be a potential destination, despite the Bluebirds playing in the Championship. Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett revealed in a recent interview that “what Gareth does next is not about money”,

“It’s something I guess I need to sit down and go through,” Bale said on his future ahead of Wales’ Nations League tie against the Netherlands on Tuesday.

“Not just with my family, but with the manager here, with the physios here that we use, to see what would give me the best chance of being fit come November and December.

“I don’t really know if the standard makes too much of a difference. A football game is a football game.”

NAFDAC Moves To Curb Distribution Of Fake Drugs

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, has urged pharmaceutical distributors and other stakeholders in the health sector to collaborate with it to actualise its five year drug traceability plan for the country.

The agency’s Director of Registration and Regulatory Affairs, Dr. Monica Eimunjeze, made the call while speaking about the plan at the Pharmaceutical Wholesalers and Distributors Association of Nigeria’s conference held in Lagos.

She said, the plan is aimed at curbing the distribution of fake drugs and improving the integrity of the pharmaceutical distribution chain in Nigeria.

Also speaking at the conference, Mr. Ibrahim Ahmed, who represented the Registrar of Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, spoke on the challenges the government has encountered in creating alternatives to the open drug markets.

He said, the federal government, has made efforts to shut down open drug markets operating at Idumota in Lagos, Sabon Gari market in Kano State, as well as Ariara market in Aba, Abia State.

Ahmed, who is a pharmacist, said relocating these markets to designated areas, where the drug distribution system can be properly monitored came with some challenges.

He disclosed that a drug distribution facility will be inaugurated in Kano within the next three months to serve the purpose, adding that other parts of the country like Lagos and Anambra states need similar facilities.

The Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Wholesalers and Distributors Association of Nigeria, Ernest Okafor, said the association is trying to proffer a solution to the issues affecting pharmaceutical distribution, noting that its group is pushing for the use of technology.

According to the World Health Organisation, 80% of countries, predominantly developing ones, have bad drug procurement and distribution systems problems.

To explain how bad it is, the UN agency, in 2017, declared that one in 10 drugs sold in developing countries are fake or substandard, adding that these counterfeit products are leading thousands to their early graves.

0

The Federal Government has resumed talks with representatives of unions in the nation’s universities.

The Prof Nimi Briggs committee set up by the government to renegotiate the 2009 agreement was expected to end its three months’ timelines given on June 7, 2022.

But investigations revealed that the committee would meet Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday (today) while the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and allied institutions would have their meeting on Friday.

“We are meeting the FG committee in Abuja on Monday,” a source in ASUU said. The union’s National President, Emmanuel Osodeke, in an interview, also said the meetings would resume this week.

“We are resuming the meeting this week and we have an invitation this week. The renegotiation meeting will only end if we have called off the strike.

“Since the strike is still on, the meeting cannot end. We do not have any problem with the committee. When we do, we will communicate with the committee,” he said.

Similarly, the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions’ National President, Ibrahim Mohammed, told news correspondent that SSANU’s meeting would be on Friday.

“Yes, we are meeting with the FG on Friday,” he said.

SSANU’s strike started with a warning strike of two weeks which commenced on the midnight of March 27, 2021, while the extension of another two weeks commenced on April 10, 2022 and it is still ongoing.

ASUU commenced its ongoing strike on February 14,  2022, after the Federal Government failed to meet some of its demands including, the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution.

It was gathered that 31 of those courses, represented 96.0 per cent of what got NUC full accreditation status.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu has received encomiums for bringing sustainable reforms to the state education sector, which were fast yielding positive results.

In his remarks, President elect of LASU Students’ Union Government, Adeoye Moses, a 300 Level Student in the Theatre Arts Department, attributed the success of the accreditation to the state government continued funding of tertiary education and the appointment of a hardworking educationist as the 9th Vice Chancellor of the University, Ibiyemi Bello.

Moses, while describing the success of the University’s new accreditation status as a huge one, assured that the students would work harder to ensure that the University retains its current status as one of the leading universities in Africa.

The newly established King David University of Medical Sciences (KDUMS), at the weekend, matriculated a total of 54 students in Ebonyi State.

The students cut across the faculty of natural sciences (six candidates), faculty of medical sciences (37 candidates) and faculty of health sciences (eight candidates).

In a welcome address, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Jesse Uneke, noted that the establishment of the institution has ended Medical and Educational Tourism in the country.

He then lauded Governor David Umahi for his foresightedness in establishing the school

Governor Umahi who is the visitor to the institution, also promised that in the next academic session, another 14 students from the state and all the 36 states of the federation, as well as FCT, will be given scholarships by the state government as it did for the first set of the students.

He then warned the staff and students of the school against cultism and industrial action which according to him will not be healthy for the new institution.

“I know that the lecturers and staff all over the country have not been treated fairly but we want this institution to be very exceptional. We will also incorporate no strike by students or staff, we will fill the cup.

“I have heard your oath of office but the Ebonyi State oath of office is going to be more dangerous. If you are viewed to be a cultist whether you are a staff or a student, you are gone from the university. The Uburu man will pursue any cultist in this institution including those who encourage cultism,” he said.

The multibillion naira specialized university was built by the state government but taken over by the federal government following Umahi’s request.
