Oleksandr Usyk v Anthony Joshua Rematch Likely To Occur In August

0

Anthony Joshua’s rematch against Oleksandr Usyk is likely to be held on 20 August in the Middle East.

Ukrainian beat Joshua on points last year to claim the WBO, IBF and WBA (Super) titles.

A date of 23 July was pencilled in for the rematch but Usyk’s promoter Oleksandr Krasyuk said they have been told to prepare for the later date.

Saudi Arabia is expected to host the rematch despite concerns about the country’s human rights record.

Joshua, 32, has fought in Saudi Arabia once before when he beat Andy Ruiz Jr in their rematch in 2019.

It is the second time the highly anticipated rematch between Usyk and Joshua has been delayed.

After Usyk dominated the first encounter against the Briton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last September, Joshua immediately activated his rematch clause and had hoped to fight again in May.

But Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Usyk’s decision to remain at home to help the war effort forced organisers to delay the bout.

Usyk, 35, left Ukraine in March to begin training while Joshua has spent his time away from the ring attempting to reorganise his coaching set-up as he looks to regain the belts.

American coach Robert Garcia has been hired with Joshua expected to adopt a more aggressive approach for the rematch.

British Olympic Swimmer Slams Zach Bridges For Undue Advantage In Female Sports

A fresh row has broken out after trans cyclist Emily (born Zach) Bridges laughed off claims she has a competitive advantage over biological women.

In a series of tweets, British Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies joins many critiques saying Bridges is ‘not a woman’, calling her inclusion in women’s sports ‘unfair’.

Davies stated that she would have be banned from competing if she had ‘as much testosterone in my system as Emily Bridges is allowed’.

The former GB swimmer also posted: ‘Emily Bridges has never been barred from sport or ever will be. EB was competing last year & earlier this year successfully in the men’s category. Inclusion is being able to compete, it’s not getting an unfair advantage’.

Davies added: ‘If we get to the point where we can’t talk facts because it might hurt someone’s feeling where the hell is this going to lead us? How can we measure feelings? Why is one person’s feelings more important than another person’s feelings? See… feelings cannot be a measurement of truth.’

Between 1975 and 1985, Davies missed out on a string of medals while competing against East German drug cheats. She now believes there are parallels between the state-sponsored doping campaigns of the Cold War and transgender athletes taking hormone-suppression medication in a quest to win medals in women’s categories.

The issue of trans inclusion reached the mainstream when US trans swimmer Lia Thomas thrashed the female competition and broke numerous records in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s championships in Atlanta.

Zach Bridges, who came out as a transgender woman in October 2020, made headlines in March when she was barred from competing against Olympic hero Dame Laura Kenny in the British National Omnium Championships at the 11th hour by world governing body UCI.

Many have condemned her Last week’s win in a so-called ‘inclusive’ cycling race against women competitors at Herne Hill velodrome in South-East London.  In second place was Lilly Chant, who is still designated as male on official records despite identifying as a woman. The tournament’s best-performing biological woman, Jo Smith, won bronze.

During a wide-ranging interview about the controversy and trans inclusion in women’s sporting events, Bridges said he had suffered threats after Boris Johnson declared that ‘biological men shouldn’t compete in women’s sports’.

Bridges insists that the science suggesting that trans women have a competitive advantage over women because they have been through male puberty is irrelevant and laughable.

Sepp Blatter And Michel Platini Fraud Trial Delayed By Day Because Of Illness

The start of the trial of Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini has been delayed by a day after Blatter said he was too ill to testify.

Once the most powerful men in world football, the pain were due to go on trial  on Wednesday accused of fraud.

But Blatter told a court hearing in Switzerland that he is unable to testify because of chest pains.

“The pain will come back and I am having difficulty breathing,” said the 86-year-old in a whisper.

Judges at the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona allowed Blatter, former president of world football’s governing body Fifa, to make his testimony on Thursday.

Swiss prosecutors claim a 2011 payment of 2m Swiss francs (£1.6m) made by Blatter to Platini, ex-president of European football’s governing body Uefa, was unlawful.

Both men deny wrongdoing and say the transfer was belated payment to former France captain Platini, 66, for his advisory work for Fifa between 1998 and 2002.

The pair were banned from football in 2015 and indicted in November ast year.

Earlier on Wednesday, lawyers for Blatter and Platini failed to move the trial to a local court or dismiss Fifa’s civil claim against them to recoup the 2m Swiss francs.

The trial is due to conclude on 22 June, with a verdict expected on 8 July.

If found guilty, the defendants could be jailed for up to five years or fined.

End ASUU Strike, Others, NLC Charges Federal Govt

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on the Federal Government to end the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and other university-based unions.

The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, made the call in his contributions to the report of the Director-General, International Labour Organisation, during the 110th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

The conference which opened on Tuesday has the theme, “Social justice, decent work.”

According to Wabba, the NLC has written to the Federal Government on how to end the university workers’ strike.

“We call on the government to bring this strike to an end without further delay,” he said.

While the Federal Government continue to work on the demands of the unions, academic activities across all public universities have been suspended.

Wabba said that the NLC had written to President Muhammadu Buhari on how to use a high-powered delegation to end the strike.

He said that one of the main issues in contention was the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution, a salary payment platform developed by ASUU.

“I think the process has been concluded, what we are waiting for is for that process to reconvene again and for that issue to be resolved. We opened that channel of intervention among others.

“I am also aware that the Interfaith Religious Council also met with Mr President and the thinking was in the same direction.

“We will be very committed to reviewing that process and making sure that our children are made to go back to school.

“The best way to resolve disputes under the ILO rule is through a social dialogue process that works and that respects collective bargaining agreements.

“That will be a lasting option to addressing some of those issues and disputes, and I think it is high time that was done,” he said.

The university unions’ and  Federal Government renegotiation committee sitting ended yesterday.

The Federal Government on March 7, 2022, inaugurated a seven-person committee tasked with the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the other three unions including, The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and The National Association of Academic Technologists.

The committee which was chaired by Pro-Chancellor, Alex Ekweme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Emeritus Professor Nimi Briggs was given three months to conclude the renegotiation with ASUU and other unions.

According to ASUU and SSANU national presidents, Emmanuel Osodeke and Mohammed Ibrahim respectively, the Briggs committee has been meeting with the various unions since May 2022 to renegotiate their agreements.

Osodeke told news correspondent ‘‘There is progress but it depends on the government side. We had a fairly good meeting we are still trying to resolve the issues.

“Until we get the final report from the government.  We are trying to work in the same direction. They are also testing UTAS.’’

It is believed that the committee would submit its report to the FG this week or they could be given an extension.

The Committee, which is expected to review the draft proposed FGN/ASUU Agreement, has the following Terms of Reference, liaise and consult with relevant stakeholders to finalise the position of the Federal Government to the issues in the draft proposed FGN/ASUU Renegotiated Agreement; renegotiate in realistic and workable terms the 2009 Agreements with other University-Based Unions; negotiate and recommend any other issue the Committee deems relevant to reposition the NUC for global competitiveness; and submit proposed draft agreements within three months from the date of inauguration.

Likewise, all the unions are presently on strike over unmet demands of the 2009 agreements with the unions.

ASUU commenced its ongoing strike on February 14,  2022, after the Federal Government failed to meet some of its demands including, the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution.

SSANU’s strike started with a warning strike of two weeks which commenced on March 27, 2021, while the extension of another two weeks commenced on Sunday April 10, 2022. It is ongoing, having being reported that it has been extended by a month.

Some of the demands of SSANU include the inconsistent issue of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, unpaid earned allowances, and delay in the renegotiation of FGN, NASU, SSANU agreements, and non-payment of minimum wage arrears.

Others include neglect and poor funding of state universities, non-payment of retirement benefits to outgoing members of the unions, and usurpation of the headship of non-teaching units in clear violation of conditions of service and establishment procedures, among others.

Other members of the Briggs committee are Pro-Chancellor, Federal University, Wukari, Arc. Lawrence Patrick Ngbale, who represents North East; Pro-Chancellor, Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Prof. Funmi Togunu-Bickersteth, representing South West and Pro-Chancellor, Federal University, Lokoja, Senator Chris Adighije, representing South East.
