Mali’s military rulers say they have set the transition period at 24 months.

While speaking on state television, Abdoulaye Maiga, the spokesman for the transitional authorities read a decree signed by ruler Assimi Goïta.

Abdoulaye Maiga read.”The duration of the transition in Mali is set at 24 months, as of March 26, 2022, in accordance with article 22 of law n ° 2022-001 of February 25 2022 revising the transition charter.”

The news comes just a few days after the Ecowas SUMMIT after the regional block imposed sanctions on Mali last January rejecting what they called an unacceptable timetable for the reins of the country to return to a civilian-led government.

Mali parliament approved in February a charter allowing a five-year democratic transition. A technical committee of ECOWAS had proposed the organization of polls within 12 or 16 months.

Choguel Maiga, the prime minister installed by Mali’s military, said: “We cannot go below 24 months unless we decide to postpone or not to carry out certain actions until the end.”

Despite talks between the ECOAS mediator and Goïta’s government, both parties have failed to agree on consensual duration. The regional block has yet to comment on this official transition period. They will meet again on July 3

Azerbaijan: Masdar Sets Sights On 10GW Of Renewables Projects

0

Renewable energy developer Masdar has signed implementation agreements with the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to develop renewable energy projects in the country.

The agreements cover a capacity of 4,000MW with the right to develop an additional 6,000MW as part of a second phase. The total capacity of 10,000MW would the largest in the country’s history, according to Masdar.

The 4000MW first phase will comprise 1000MW of onshore wind projects, 1000MW of solar PV projects, as well as 2000MW of integrated offshore wind and green hydrogen projects.

The projects not only aim to produce power for domestic use but also aim to develop the nation’s infrastructure to accommodate energy export, specifically wind and hydrogen.

The implementation agreements were signed by HE Parviz Shahbazov, minister of energy, with Fawaz Al Muharrami, acting executive director of Masdar Clean Energy at an event in Shusha, held as a special session of Baku Energy Week.

The agreement for onshore wind and solar projects includes measures to study and strengthen the network and implement processes for the export of electricity. The second agreement includes measures to create wind power for production and export purposes, decarbonization, hydrogen production and export.

During the Baku Energy Week, Masdar also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) for the joint development of renewable energy sources.

Mozambique To Release Corrected Textbooks Next Year

0

Correcting mistakes detected in primary school textbooks in Mozambique should be concluded this year, and the books will be available for use in the 2023 school year. The institutions invited to work on the corrections, including the Eduardo Mondlane University, which is the oldest higher education establishment in the country, began last week to build teams for the task.

The Minister of Education, Carmelita Namashulua, acknowledged that, due to the complexity of the work, it is not yet possible to give an exact date for concluding the corrections.

Last Monday, in her first public reaction after the discovery of the mistakes, especially in the sixth grade Social Science textbook, the minister announced the withdrawal of that book, and a review of all textbooks in use for revision and correction.

This measure is intended to prevent students from assimilating syllabus contents riddled with errors and inaccuracies.

Namashalua said while the correction work is underway, teachers should use theme plans to prepare their lessons.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Feliciano Mahalambe, said the institution is urging teachers to redouble their efforts, as they did in previous years, during the emergencies caused by natural disasters and the pandemic, to avoid the failure of children.

A Commission of Inquiry is investigating how the textbooks came to be written so badly. They contain errors in basic maths, mistakes in geography, and ungrammatical Portuguese.

Perhaps most serious of all, one of the books praises colonialism for supposedly ending ethnic wars in Africa.

The author of the Social Science book, Firoza Bica, has said nothing about the scandal. Did she really write the book or did somebody else change it? And did nobody proof-read the books before they were sent to the printer? Claims of deliberate sabotage have been made, but have yet to be proved.

The General Director of the National Institute for the Development of Education (INDE), Ismael Nheze, was suspended a week ago, and the National Commission to Assess School Textbooks has been dissolved.

There have been demands that Namashalua herself should be sacked, while her defenders argue that sabotaging the textbooks might have been part of a plot to get rid of her.

British Airways Suspends Islamabad Flight Operation, Rebuffs Fuel Shortage Reasons

0

The British Airways has suspended its Islamabad flight operation citing operational reasons.

The British Airways on Tuesday decided to suspend its flight operation in Islamabad from June 15 till June 30 owing to some operational hitches.

The BA station manager informed the manager of Islamabad International Airport about the airlines’ decision. He, however, stated that the current flight schedule would stay on course till June 15.

The Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson also confirmed that the BA was suspending its flight operation in Islamabad due to operational reasons.

The spokesperson rebuffed the rumours doing rounds on the social media regarding BA’s suspension of Islamabad flight operation due to fuel shortage.

“The CAA has been informed by the aviation fuel providers at Islamabad airport that there is no shortage of fuel and fuel storage tanks are full,” he added.

The spokesperson said that the British Airways would soon release an explanation in this regard, adding that the local BA administration was in contact with Islamabad airport authorities.

On Feb 28, the British Airways halted its Lahore to London flight operation which was resumed between the two cities in October 2020. Since then, the BA has been continuing to operate its flights between Islamabad and London.

Australian Court Makes Google Pay $515,000 For Defamation

An Australian court on has ordered Google to pay a former politician 715,000 Australian dollars ($515,000) over two defamatory YouTube videos.

John Barilaro, the former New South Wales state deputy premier, had sued Google and comedian Jordan Shanks, also known as friendly jordies, in the Federal Court over the videos.

Justice Steven Rares found Barilaro had been the “subject of a relentless, racist, abusive and defamatory campaign conducted on YouTube,” a platform owned by Google.

Barilaro told reporters outside the Sydney court that he felt “vindicated” by the judgment.

“I am emotional today. To hear His Justice read out the reasoning and the evidence and the case itself again is a little bit traumatizing,” Barilaro said.

“But I’m happy it’s the end of the journey. You’ve got to be either courageous or stupid to take on Google, and maybe it was a bit of both,” Barilaro added.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

His lawyer Paul Svilans said it was the only case he was aware of where Google was sued for defamation through its YouTube operation.

Barilaro would not have sued if Google had taken down the videos, uploaded in September and October in 2020, as requested by letter in December of that year, he said.

The videos had been viewed tens of thousands of times and earned Google thousands of dollars, the judge said.

Google eventually abandoned all of its defenses against Barilaro’s suit. A four-day hearing in March only focused on the amount of damages that Google would pay. Legal costs will be awarded at a later date.

Barilaro’s case against Shanks was settled in November last year when the comedian and political commentator issued an apology, agreed to pay AU$100,000 ($72,000) and edited the videos.

Shanks’ campaign had been cited as a reason for Barilaro’s decision to retire from politics last year.

Rares, the judge, said Google repeatedly failed to take responsibility for its conduct as a publisher.

Exploring Pico Cão Grande, Sao Tome And Principe

0

Pico Cão Grande, or as the translation would be Great Dog Peak, is a towering needle-shaped volcanic plug peak, located on the São Tomé Island in Obo National Park, in São Tomé and Príncipe.

The total height of this extinct volcano is over 663 meters (2,175 feet). It rises dramatically over the surrounding terrain and it makes it really interesting for everyone visiting this African island.

People are trying to climb on it, however, the locals have said that the peak is unclimbable, due to its position in a tropical terrain, where most of the time it rains, or if not it is foggy and moist. There are as well moss which is not helping to climb it too.

The fog does not always allow for this volcanic tower to be clearly seen, so it is difficult to see it in “one piece”.

Approaching the tower is through impenetrable forest of giant ferns and lianas. The grounds are filled with snaked which are everywhere, even as you climb on the tower you would be able to see them.

It is not the tallest peak the islands have, it is only numbered 37th among all the peaks, which means that there are a lot of interesting peaks like this one.

But this peak is considered a volcanic plug, created when the lava of another volcano formed hardened magma over the mouth of an active volcano. Alluring and pointing always towards the sky.

Super Eagles Forward, Dessers Proud To Represent Nigeria Over Belgium

Cyriel Dessers has defended his decision to represent Nigeria instead of the Belgium national team.

Dessers, 27, was born to a Belgian father and Nigerian mother.

The forward however chose to play for the Super Eagles despite reported interest from Belgium.

Dessers was however overlooked by former Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr after a cameo debut against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia two years ago.

The former Utrecht striker earned his recall to the team after a superlative campaign for Eredivisie side, Feyenoord Rotterdam.

Dessers insisted he took the right decision and is delighted to be back in the team.
