Tesla CEO Predicts Recession. Sets Plans In Motion

0

Tesla CEO Elon Musk joins other high power economic players who have reported having a bad feeling about the economy. Musk had circulated via an email to company executives that there is a need to cut about 10% of jobs at the electric carmaker due to a “super bad feeling”

The message, sent on Thursday and titled “pause all hiring worldwide”, came two days after the billionaire told staff that it was time to return to the workplace.

According to its annual SEC filing, Tesla employed almost 100,000 people at the company and its subsidiaries at the end of 2021.

Tesla shares fell nearly 3% in U.S. premarket trade on Friday and its Frankfurt-listed stock was down 3.6% after the Reuters report. U.S. Nasdaq futures turned negative and were trading 0.6% lower.

Musk has warned in recent weeks about the risk of a recession, adding to a growing chorus of warnings from business leaders about same but his email ordering a hiring freeze and staff cuts was the most direct and high-profile message of its kind from the head of an automaker.

So far, demand for Tesla cars and other electric vehicles has remained strong and many of the traditional indicators of a downturn – including increasing dealer inventories and incentives in the United States – have not materialized.

But Tesla has struggled to restart production at its Shanghai factory after Covid-19 lockdowns forced costly outages at the plant.

“Musk’s bad feeling is shared by many people,” said Carsten Brzeski, global head of macroeconomic research at Dutch bank ING.

Musk’s gloomy outlook echoes recent comments from executives including JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Goldman Sachs President John Waldron.

A “hurricane is right out there down the road coming our way,” Dimon said this week.

Inflation in the United States is hovering at 40-year highs and has caused a jump in the cost of living for Americans, while the Federal Reserve faces the difficult task of dampening demand enough to curb inflation while not causing a recession.

A number of analysts have cut price targets for Tesla recently, forecasting slower deliveries due to Chinese lockdowns and lost output at its Shanghai plant, a hub supplying electric vehicles to China and for export.

China accounted for just over a third of Tesla’s global deliveries in 2021, according to company disclosures and data released on sales there.

Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives said in a tweet it appeared Musk and Tesla were “trying to be ahead of a slower delivery ramp this year and preserve margins ahead of an economic slowdown.”

Before Musk’s warning, Tesla had about 5,000 job postings on LinkedIn from sales in Tokyo and engineers at its new Berlin gigafactory to deep learning scientists in Palo Alto. It had scheduled an online hiring event for Shanghai on June 9 on its WeChat channel.

Musk’s demand that staff return to the office has already faced pushback in Germany.

“Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week,” Musk wrote in his Tuesday email. “If you don’t show up, we will assume you have resigned.”

Musk has referred to the risk of a recession repeatedly in recent comments.

Remotely addressing a conference in mid-May in Miami Beach, Musk said: “I think we are probably in a recession and that recession will get worse.” He added: “It’ll probably be some tough going for, I don’t know, a year, maybe 12 to 18 months, is usually the amount of time that it takes for a correction to happen.”

In late May, when asked by a Twitter user whether the economy was approaching a recession, Musk said: “Yes, but this is actually a good thing. It has been raining money on fools for too long. Some bankruptcies need to happen.”

Okada Riders Sue Lagos State Over Ban

0

The Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria (MTUN) has taken the Lagos State Government before the Federal High Court in Lagos.

MTUN and others are asking that the ban on commercial motorcycles be declared illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional.

Apart from MTUN, other applicants in the suit include Comrade Peter Umoh, Pastor Tony Onuoha, David Abiona, Adebayo Oluwasegun, Gambo Muhammed, Yakubu Abubakar, Ayo Boluwade, Amaechi Peter and Nwamiri Monday.

The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Task Force, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, and Commissioner for Transport, Lagos State, are the defendants.

In the suit numbered FHC/L/CS/1016/2022, the applicants are praying the court for a declaration that the “purported proposed ban of commercial motorcycle transportation in Lagos State by the governor without hearing from the operators whose rights are affected or likely to be affected is a violation of the constitutional rights of the applicants to fair hearing provided for and encapsulated in Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).”

The applicants are also asking for a declaration that the ban on the business of commercial motorcycle transportation in Lagos by the government “is a violation of the rights of the applicants guaranteed by Section 33 of the 1999 constitution who cannot be alive without food and other means of sustenance and whose income is the business of commercial motorcycle transportation.”

In the affidavit in support of the application, sworn to by one Pastor Emmanuel Donatus, the deponent averred that he and other operators had no means of sustenance apart from the business of Okada.

They prayed the government to restrict Okada operations on major highways to “approved areas” rather than banning their operations.

The suit is yet to be assigned a judge.

Lagos State Task Force To Destroy Over 2000 Seized Motorcycles

0

The Lagos State Task Force is set to yet again, destroy another set of 2,228 impounded commercial motorcycles popularly called Okada today.

This was communicated in a statement by the Chairman of the taskforce, CSP Shola Jejeloye and was signed by the Director, Press and Public Affairs, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem.

The statement read in part “Following the announcement of a total ban on operation of commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada on all highways across six local government areas and nine local council development areas of the state by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Sanwo-Olu, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Shola Jejeloye, has said that the agency will on Friday crush another set of 2,228 impounded motorcycles to further make the enforcement of the ban thorough and effective.

“The chairman stated that the laws are very clear for Okada operators to see that their actions are in complete violation of the Transport Reform Laws of the state.”

Jejeloye noted that although the compliance rate of the Okada operators is high and encouraging, they (operators) are still not to be trusted adding that the style of operation of the riders is synonymous with guerrilla warfare- when we retreat, they advance, and when we advance, they retreat, but enforcement on the ban has come to stay.

“We will ensure not a single offender operating his Okada on the highways will be spared. We will keep watch and continue patrolling the affected parts of the state to ensure they do not get back on our roads.”

He said the agency had impounded over 259 bikes during the first two days of the ban while 18 suspected riders and passengers were arrested.

The statement also noted that all the suspects will be prosecuted for violating the state laws including passengers who will not be spared this time around but will be charged accordingly in the court of law.

Many have criticized the wasteful nature of the destruction as the motorcycles were purchased with money

Among the northern part that benefited from the project is Danbatta, in Kano State, which records massive success in ensuring girls in the community are educated.

The project drives different intervention programmes in Primary schools implemented by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the UK.

One of the selected schools is Khadija Memorial Primary school.  The Headmaster, Zakari Sani said due to intervention project, the school experienced an increase in the number of girls’ enrolment, especially orphans who previously couldn’t afford to pay school fees.

Sani said; “With the GEP3 intervention, the number of girls coming to our school has seriously increased due to free funds received from UNICEF, the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand naira given to the school as intervention quarterly.”

“Through the funds we received, we have been able to renovate our toilets and drainages in addition to writing materials,”he added.

On the intervention, the Chairman, Khadija Memorial School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) Ibrahim Adamu stated that “the project provides for the children and we, the members of the SBMCs. We also enjoy training sessions.

“If this intervention is sustained, I assure you it will go a long way in addressing the issue of the girl-child roaming in the streets and not going to school.”

A mother and member of the Khadija Memorial School’s SBMC, Hajiya Salma Audi said parents enroll their girls to school because the fees and other school materials, have been taken care of by UNICEF through the GEP3 Project.

“We are happy at the school’s committee level seeing how parents now rush to enroll their girl-child who are the mothers and foundation of every society to acquire both Islamic and western education under formal and desirable atmosphere,” she stated.

These were made known in a statement by the School’s authorities, during the field visit.

Final Year Nigerian Faces Deportation from Russia as State Fails to Pay Fees

0

A Nigerian final year medical student at Irkutsk State Medical University (ISMU), Usman Yahaya, is set to be deported from Russia to Nigeria over the failure of his sponsor to pay his school fees.

According to reports, Yahaya, a Sokoto State-born medical student has been in detention in Russia, for over a month.

He was first suspended by the medical university when the Sokoto government could not pay his overdue scholarship.

Yahaya is a recipient of the Best African Medical Student award at the Russian Centre for Scientific Research.

Yahaya was thereafter detained at a Russian immigration camp at Angarsk Irkutsk, by authorities of the European nation’s Immigration because Sokoto Scholarship Board failed to pay his school fees.

The head of Transparency International in Nigeria, an anti-corruption body, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani has called for the probe of the officers behind Yahaya’s ongoing ordeal in Sokoto.

Rafsanjani, who is also the Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), appealed to Governor Tambuwal to intervene in the plight of the student.

He urged anti-corruption agencies to probe the allegation of bribery and corrupt practices at the Sokoto Scholarship Board.

“This is very unfortunate that the bright final year medical student in the finest medical university in Russia and from Sokoto is facing this painful dilemma when we are aware how our elites value the education of their children in the most expensive schools abroad,” Rafsanjani said.

“While we appeal to Governor Tambuwal of Sokoto, a state that has a shortage of qualified medical practitioners to intervene in the plight of poor students, we call on the EFCC and ICPC to investigate the corrupt practices at Sokoto Scholarship Board.

Yahaya has appeared twice at a Russian state court. If eventually convicted, he may be expelled from ISMU, detained, or even banned from entering Russia, in the nearest future.

President of the Association of Nigerian Students in Europe (ANSE), Bashiru Muhammad has also called on Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to intervene in Yahaya’s plight.

Muhammad, a student at Coventry University, expressed worry that Governor Tambuwal’s unwavering support and kind gesture for Sokoto students abroad will be undermined if proactive steps are not taken to quickly rescue Yahaya.

The ANSE president has been liaising with officials of the Russian university and the Sokoto government towards resolving the issue.

Throwback Thursday: The History Of Osu Castle, Ghana

0

Osu Castle, also known as Fort Christiansborg and the Castle, is a small castle that is located in the township of Osu, which is part of the capital city of the Republic of Ghana, Accra.

Built in 1661 by the early modern multi-national and multi-lingual state of Denmark-Norway, the owners of the castle were changed as time went by, and the Portuguese, the State of Akwamu, and even the British were in possession of this interesting structure.

Since there was some destruction of the building, it was rebuilt numerous times, and nowadays owned by the Republic of Ghana, the castle is in a good shape.

As a matter in fact, Osu Castle was the official seat of government with some interruptions until 2013, when the seat was moved to the Flagstaff House, nonetheless, its doors are not opened to the public and photographing the castle is generally being forbidden.

The most interesting owner of the castle were the Akwamu ethnic group who occupied the structure in 1693 after overpowering the occupants who were reduced by death and disease, and the Akwamu leader, Asamani, traded for a year inside before selling back Osu Castle to Denmark-Norway.

The unorthodox shape of the structure has many facilities, and employs many people, and there are also gardens which are quite interesting for those who visited the President of Ghana.

The question of whether the Osu Castle should be used as a seat for the government still continues to hassle the Ghanaian, where according to some “the seat should stay where it is at the moment, as the castle represents a place in which the people from Ghana were sold as slaves and many were killed in the past”.

When and if it is going to be open to the general public will remain a question, but until then, we should marvel at it from the Atlantic Ocean.

Exploring Saigon Opera House, Vietnam, Built 1897 By French Architect Eugène Ferret

0

The Saigon Opera House, also known as the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City, is an opera house which is one of the oldest buildings that can be found in the largest city of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City.

Being one of the most prominent landmarks of the city, the artistic structure follows the French Colonial architectural style which is one of the best examples of this type of architecture within Vietnam.

Built in 1897 by the French architect Eugène Ferret as the Opėra de Saigon, the opera and theatre house opened its doors on 1 January 1900, and with its 800 seats, it became an important place for the people to enjoy the operas and theater play that were performed inside.

Interestingly, in 1955 the building was transformed into South Vietnam’s Assembly House, where the Lower House Assembly of South Vietnam had their meetings in the building until 1975.

Even though it is slightly smaller compared to the Hanoi Opera House, there is an influential architectural flamboyant style of the French Third Republic that can be noticed on the façade which is also shaped like the Petit Palais in Paris, France.

When seen from a distance, it is inevitable to say that the building looks more like a beautiful gigantic city gate, nevertheless, there were plenty of inscriptions and reliefs with stone-carved ornaments and statues at the entrance that decorated the building, some of them were removed in 1943 due to the criticism that the house was too much ornate.

Luckily, when the city of Ho Chi Minh was celebrating its 300 birthday in 1998, the municipal government invited some important and famous architects and artists to restore the structure where many original architectural and decorative features from the previous design have been incorporated again.

Nowadays, the stone veranda, the white stone statues at the entrance, the tiled floors, chandeliers, and bronze statues at the stairs are once again enriching the exterior and interior of the building, but certainly, the highest treasure would be the richly engraved auditorium arch and wall statues with the 500 seats where the people are still enjoying the operas and theater shows as they once did.

A true magnificent landmark of Vietnam which should be firstly enjoyed during the day, and later in the evening with the amazing shows that are being performed there.
