Semenya Offered To Strip Before Officials To Prove She Was Female

0

Double Olympic 800 metres champion Caster Semenya offered to show her private part to athletics officials when she was 18 to prove she was female, the South African middle-distance runner said in an interview with HBO’s Real Sports that will air on Tuesday.

Semenya, now 31, burst onto the scene in 2009 when she won the women’s 800m world title by a stunning margin hours after the sport’s world governing body said she would undergo gender verification tests.

“They thought I had a dick, probably, Semenya said in the HBO Real Sports interview that will air at 10:00 p.m. ET (0200 GMT).

“I told them: ‘It’s fine. I’m a female, I don’t care. If you want to see I’m a woman, I will show you my vagina. All right?’”

Gender tests on Semenya reportedly showed the runner had no womb or ovaries but that she had internal testes, the male sexual organs which produce testosterone, and her levels of the hormone were three times that of a “normal” female.

Semenya has a condition known as hyperandrogenism, which is characterised by higher than usual levels of testosterone, a hormone that increases muscle mass and strength and the body’s ability to use oxygen.

She took medication after the first ruling in 2011 by World Athletics – then the International Association of Athletics Federations – that all female athletes with hyperandrogenism had to medically lower their testosterone levels.

“It made me sick, made me gain weight, panic attacks, I don’t know if I was ever going to have a heart attack,” Semenya told HBO Real Sports. “It’s like stabbing yourself with a knife every day. But I had no choice.

“I’m 18, I want to run, I want to make it to Olympics, that’s the only option for me.”

World Athletics lawyer Jonathan Taylor, speaking during the HBO Real Sports interview, disagreed with medical panels, including the World Medical Association, that condemned the sport’s governing body for requiring women with differences in sex development (DSDs) to take drugs to compete.

“You say medically it’s not healthy for me, then my question back to you is: ‘Why do the world’s leading experts say that that is what we would prescribe?’” said Taylor.

Semenya fired back: “Jonathan must cut his tongue and throw it away. If he wants to understand how that thing has tortured me, he must go and take those medications. He will understand.”

In 2020, Semenya lost her appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal to set aside a 2019 Court of Arbitration ruling that female athletes with high natural testosterone levels must take medication to reduce it.

She had approached the tribunal after CAS, sport’s highest court, ruled that the regulations of World Athletics were necessary for athletes with DSDs in races ranging from 400 metres to a mile to ensure fair competition.

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel is set to have £200m to spend this summer as Todd Boehly’s takeover is on the brink of completion after the Premier League formally announced he had passed its ownership checks.

Brazil winger Raphinha, 25, has told Leeds United’s directors he wants to play for Barcelona, who had a £30m bid for him rejected earlier this year.

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, 35, could move to David Beckham’s Major League Soccer side Inter Miami after being released by Atletico Madrid.

Italian Serie A side Salernitana “would love to sign” outgoing Manchester United and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, 35, according to Salernitana club president Danilo Iervolino.

Belgium forward Eden Hazard, 31, has ruled out a summer departure from Real Madrid, insisting he is desperate to “show everyone what I can do” after an injury-plagued three years with Real.

Everton and Crystal Palace both want to sign Watford and Senegal winger Ismaila Sarr, but Newcastle have ended their interest in the 24-year-old.

Wales forward Gareth Bale, 32, was offered to Atletico Madrid on a free transfer, but they turned him down. Bale is set to leave Atletico’s rivals Real Madrid in the summer.

French Open: Daniil Medvedev & Stefanos Tsitsipas Through But Denis Shapovalov Loses

0

World number two Daniil Medvedev and 2021 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the French Open second round but 14th seed Denis Shapovalov made a surprise exit.

Russia’s US Open champion Medvedev, 26, won 6-2 6-2 6-2 against Argentine Facundo Bagnis, ranked 103rd.

Fourth seed Tsitsipas flirted with a shock defeat when he dropped the first two sets to Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti.

But the Greek 23-year-old fought back to win 5-7 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-2.

Musetti went two sets up against eventual winner Novak Djokovic in the fourth round last year before retiring injured in the fifth and surged into another commanding position against Tsitsipas.

The 20-year-old edged a tight opening set and raced into a 4-0 lead in the second, winning seven games in a row, as he ramped up the pressure on his more accomplished but out-of-sorts opponent.

But Tsitsipas dominated the third set, claiming 100% of his first-service points and hitting 13 winners to haul himself back into the match, and continued to outfox the world number 66 to set up a decider.

With Musetti’s challenge fading, Tsitsipas broke serve at the earliest opportunity as he comfortably claimed the fifth set to complete a gutsy late-night comeback on Court Philippe Chatrier.

“Things weren’t easy for me in the first two sets,” said Tsitsipas, who will face Czech qualifier Zdenek Kolar for a place in the last 32.

“It was positive and a good effort in the end. I wasn’t feeling very good in the first two sets, something was off with my game. Lorenzo wasn’t giving me any rhythm.”

Meanwhile, 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist Shapovalov said he “didn’t really show up” in a straight-sets defeat by Danish 19-year-old Holger Rune.

The 23-year-old Canadian, who reached the last eight at the Australian Open earlier this year, made a huge 53 unforced errors as the 2019 junior Roland Garros champion won 6-3 6-1 7-6 (7-4).

Australia’s Alex de Minaur, seeded 19th, also suffered an early exit following a final-set tie-break against French 21-year-old Hugo Gaston, who prevailed 4-6 6-2 6-3 0-6 7-6 (10-4).

Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev had to come from a set down to defeat South Korean Kwon Soon-woo 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-2 6-4.

Elsewhere, Frenchman Benoit Paire served 24 double faults in a 6-3 7-5 1-6 7-5 loss to Ilya Ivashka.

Paire had lost in the first round in 10 consecutive tournaments before picking up a victory at last week’s Geneva Open – his only win on the ATP tour this year.

Bagnis hampered by injury in Medvedev defeat

Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev lost to Tsitsipas in straight sets in the last eight at Roland Garros last year

Medvedev reached his first quarter-final at Roland Garros last year having lost in the first round the four previous times, and had been unsure of his participation after a hernia operation in April.

“I love Roland Garros, especially since last year. I hope this year I can go further,” said Medvedev, who will meet Serb Laslo Djere next.

“When I went under the operation I didn’t think I was going to play on clay, but I managed with the doctor and physio to get back. Physically, I feel 100 per cent.”

Bagnis, 32, immediately responded after seeing his serve broken in the opening game – but that was to prove a rare glimmer of hope for him against Medvedev on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

In a dominant display, second seed Medvedev won nine successive games as he efficiently settled the first set and took a commanding 4-0 lead on his way to clinching the second.

The Russian, unable to compete under his national flag because of the war in Ukraine, saw his progress checked as Bagnis – struggling with a calf issue throughout – broke back to level the third set at 2-2.

But that only served to refocus Medvedev, who rattled through the next four games to end the contest after just one hour and 38 minutes.

Bagnis could be fined his full prize money if it is decided that his injury prevented the Argentine meeting the required professional standard.

“It was a tough first round. I tried to give my best. I didn’t have it in my best condition, I had a problem last week in my leg, but I came here to Roland Garros to get ready and try to give 100 percent,” Bagnis said.

“But today after the warm-up I felt it again, the problem, so it was tough because I think I couldn’t play, but I wanted to continue. I wanted to finish the match, so, I tried to do it, but it was not to easy so that’s the reality.”

Skupski and Koolhof make winning start

In the men’s doubles, Britain’s Neal Skupski and Dutch team-mate Wesley Koolhof had to come from behind against Koolhof’s compatriots Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp to reach the second round.

Sixth seeds Skupski and Koolhof fought back to win 4-6 6-3 6-3 and continue their fine form this year.

The pair have claimed a tour-leading four titles so far this season and won their first ATP Masters 1000 title together at the Madrid Open earlier in May.

Having won 32 matches in 2022, with their other successes coming in Melbourne, Adelaide and Qatar, they arrive in Paris full of confidence.

Skupski’s best Grand Slam performance is a run to the 2019 US Open semi-finals, then alongside fellow Briton Jamie Murray, while Koolhof reached the New York final in 2020 with partner Nikola Mektic.

Manchester City: Erling Haaland To Complete Move As Pep Guardiola Eyes Kalvin Phillips

0

Erling Haaland has flown to the UK to complete his £51.2m transfer to Premier League champions Manchester City.

City announced this month they had reached an agreement with the Norway forward to join them from Borussia Dortmund.

With title celebrations over, Haaland, 21, has now arrived to finish the final details of the transfer before heading off on international duty.

City are also eyeing a possible move for Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Haaland’s arrival is part of what promises to be a busy summer at City.

With Brazilian Fernandinho, 37, leaving, manager Pep Guardiola is set to take the opportunity to bolster his squad.

He is looking at central midfield as an area that needs strengthening, with the 26-year-old Phillips – named in the England squad earlier today – one of the players of interest.

With Leeds securing their top-flight survival at the weekend, it will not make a move for Phillips easy, although City are unlikely to encounter the same stubbornness from Elland Road as they experienced with Tottenham around their pursuit of Harry Kane 12 months ago.

It is not anticipated Haaland will speak to the media until his return for pre-season training in July ahead of City’s short tour to the United States.

Chelsea: Premier League Approves Takeover Deal From Todd Boehly Consortium

0

The Premier League has approved the £4.25bn takeover of Chelsea by a consortium led by LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly.

The league says the consortium has passed its owner’s and directors’ test.

The Premier League club was put up for sale before owner Roman Abramovich wassanctioned over links to Russian president Vladmir Putin

The purchase remains subject to the Government issuing the required sale licence.

The final stages of the transaction will then need to be completed.

The government does not want Abramovich to make any proceeds from the sale but sources are optimistic about a deal being finalised on Tuesday night.

“We now believe everyone will be ready to issue the necessary licences” said one insider.

“The last remaining hurdle boils down to a number of final technical details that are being discussed with the club.”

Earlier this month the deal had seemed close to collapse  over concerns proceeds would not reach good causes as promised by Abramovich.

Abramovich debied that he had asked for his 1.5b loan  to Chelsea be repaid when the club was sold.

Several parties expressed an interest but Chelsea agreed to sell to the Boehly-led consortium earlier in May

The consortium is led by Boehly but Clearlake Capital, a Californian private equity firm, would own a majority of the shares in Chelsea. Other investors include US billionaire Mark Walter, also a co-owner of the LA Dodgers, and Swiss billionaire Hansjoerg Wyss.

Chelsea have been allowed to continue operating under a special government licence which expires on 31 May.

Africa Clean Energy Technical Assistance Facility Supports Lagos State Off-Grid Electrification Strategy And Action Plan

0

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, has developed the Lagos State Off-Grid Electrification Strategy and Action Plan with support from the British-funded Africa Clean Energy Technical Assistance Facility (ACE-TAF).

The programme, which is being implemented by Tetra Tech International Development and funded by the UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), is geared towards the improvement of the off-grid energy access in Lagos State.

Speaking during the formal handover ceremony on Monday at the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Olalere Odusote, explained that the Ministry was working tirelessly to improve energy access in the State.

He recalled that in 2021, the government developed the Lagos State Electricity Policy to articulate its vision for creating a viable sub-national electricity sector that caters fully to the needs of its citizens while also enabling significant socio-economic growth.

Odusote explained that with the emergence of the off-grid solar sector as an important component in achieving access to energy – for all – in the State, the Ministry has developed the Lagos State Off-Grid Electrification Strategy and Plan with the support of ACE-TAF to ensure the implementation of the Lagos State Electricity Policy on off-grid electrification.

Also speaking at the event, Mr. Chibuikem Agbaegbu, the ACE-TAF Nigeria Country Manager, expressed delight to see the successful collaboration with Lagos State Government in improving energy access to Lagosians.

He added that in 2021, AC-TAF had committed to supporting the State Government in improving the enabling environment for off-grid solar and has done so through its support in the development of the Lagos State Electricity Policy and the Lagos State Off-Grid Electrification Strategy and Action Plan.

Agbaegbu averred that the Off-Grid Electrification Strategy and Plan further underscore the State Government’s commitment to clean off-grid electrification, thereby enabling private sector investment in its off-grid electricity market.

Nigeria IPR project: the biggest crypto project in the world

Nigeria IPR project

According to a tweet by Koibanx, Nigeria is launching the biggest Crypto project in the world which is the Nigeria IPR project.

It is said that The Nigerian government has signed a 3years exclusive Intellectual Property Right (IPR) agreement with Developing Africa Group to launch a nationwide wallet (we haven’t heard a corroborating statement from the Nigerian government yet).

The wallet will enable the international commercialization of all Intellectual Property forms being created and registered within Nigeria, both locally and internationally.

Nigeria government and Blockchain technology

After 15months of the CBN directive to commercial banks which nullifies the engagement of commercial banks in any digital asset transaction and outright blocking of any account with traces of trading cryptocurrency, Nigeria is now making history in the Crypto and Blockchain adoption.

This month, SEC releases Crypto Assets rules to regulate Nigeria’s Crypto market. Also, the Central Bank of Nigeria was among the 23 African Central Banks that met at El Salvador to discuss Bitcoin.

The Central Bank of Nigeria through the Delta State Branch Controller admonished Nigerians to embrace e-Naira as paper currency will soon be removed from circulation.

Now we have the Nigeria IPR project.

First IPR project in Africa

According to the agreement, Developing Africa Group will build Nigeria’s official platform for Nigerians to be able to upload any form of Intellectual Property rights, trade, sell or exchange them anywhere in the world while collecting royalties and proceeds of these operations in their wallets.

Intellectual property forms reached by the agreement include trademarks, patents and all forms of copyright such as songs, lyrics, videos, shoes, lectures, podcasts and all forms of streamable contents.

It should be noted that Developing Africa Group made a tweet on 31st March, 2022 featuring Nigeria’s Trade Minister, Otunba Adebayo on BBC Podcasts on his foresight to initiate Nigeria IPR project which is Africa’s first IPR commercialisation project.

The Developing Africa Group has chosen Koibanx, with government approval, as the tokenization and payment engine to be utilised while the protocol will be built on Algorand Blockchain.

Speaking in a tweet space hosted by Fred Estante and co-hosted by Koibanx, Ben Omoakin Oguntala from Developing Africa Group highlighted more on the benefits of this development to Nigerians.

Koibanx, the leading Latin America asset tokenization and Blockchain financial infrastructure company, will be in charge of implementing the wallet, the token both for the Intellectual Property being sold and stable token (equivalent to the Naira).

The stable coin will be used to pay the creators in addition to the overall technical integration of different vendors which includes one of the top card issuing companies worldwide, a content streaming platform and top firms in both legal and data mining.

All of which will be announced before the launch date which will be before January 2023.

Key notes

“Algorand’s protocol not only provides the performance, scalability, security and functionality required to implement such a large scale project but is also environment-friendly which is important for the Government and has a huge philosophical match with the `creators economy industry´ we’re targeting here” stated Ben Oguntala, CEO of Developing Africa Group.

According to Leo Elduayen, Koibanx´s CEO;

“What the Developing Africa Group has achieved is truly amazing. The Nigerian IPR Wallet is probably the largest crypto project world-wide. When we took El Salvador´s challenge (Koibanx also managed Chivo´s Lightning Network implementation) we impacted the life of millions of citizens, after this experience we embarked on the Colombian government platform handling tens of millions…I believe this initiative could change the life of +50M people easily. Since we launched Koibanx back in 2015 we were convinced Blockchain tech and cryptocurrencies were the foundational building blocks for economic development in emerging markets, being able to have an active part in how is happening is definitely a privilege”

Other notable projects coming up on Algorand blockchain

Crypto Smart, Africa’s No 1 Asset management company, is set to launch one of its blockchain products, Bitsave Protocol, on Algorand blockchain, watch this interview on CryptoTv+ as miss Karla Obakpolor throws some insight on how the Bitsave Protocol works.

Also Fifa announced Algorand blockchain as its official partner for blockchain solutions and the Regional sponsor of FIFA World Cup 2022.

Perspective

According to Karla Obakpolor, Founder of Crypto Smart;

“Bitsave protocol, which is a SaveFi protocol, will be built on Algorand blockchain and is being patented and trademarked before the Crypto Smart team goes public with the product.”

Karla Obakpolor has also highlighted some benefits to this IP developments in NFTs, Patenting process and more. She also highlighted some concerns as to this new development.

“Zero-COVID” Policy: China Extends Work-From-Home Order

0

China extended orders for workers and students to stay home and ordered additional mass testing Monday as Beijing reports claim cases of COVID-19 rose in the Chinese capital.

In the midst of the hardship and sufferings, Numerous residential compounds in the city have restricted movement in and out, in Shanghai millions of citizens have been under varying degrees of lockdown for two months.

Beijing on Monday reported an uptick in new cases to 99, up from a previous daily average of around 50. Two more districts, Shijingshan and Haidian, began a work-from-home policy this week, bringing the total to six. In cases where people need to go to their offices, the number of workers is limited to 30% of the normal level.

Nationwide, China reported 802 new cases Monday, marking a steady decline interrupted only by small-scale localized outbreaks. Despite that, the government has hewed to strict quarantine, lockdown and testing measures under its “zero-COVID” approach, even while the outside world is opening up; China still Extends Work-From-Home Order.

The number of new cases in China’s largest city has fallen under 1,000 for eight days in a row said Lei Zhenglong, the deputy chief of disease control and prevention at the National Health Commission.

A reopening of transport links out of Shanghai has created an exodus of migrant workers and others who were trapped by the lockdown. Among those who remain, some have been issued exit passes to leave their residential compounds or neighborhoods for a limited time for shopping or walks, while others remain restricted to their buildings.

Producers And Crew Of Matrix 4 Under Investigation in Germany

Matrix producers

Lana and Lilly Wachowski as well as crew members working on the production of Matrix 4 are under investigation in Germany for allegedly throwing a party under the guise of shooting a scene.

Officials in the city of Potsdam in Germany, are accusing them of throwing a wrap party with over 200 who were invited as extras pretending they were filming a scene for the film.

The party, which was hosted by the directors and producers of the first three films is believed to have started at 6pm, on the 11th of November, into the early hours of the 12th.

Once inside there was a dancer, a DJ, a pyrotechnic show and, for those who wanted it, a tattoo artist who gave them a Matrix tattoo.

Star of the movie, Keanu Reeves was also in attendance along with a plus one.

The producers of the film told Studio Babelsberg (where they hosted the party) that they were shooting a celebration scene.

A spokesman for the city of Potsdam, whose job it is to give permission for parties to happen, stated: “No event was announced to us. There were ongoing discussions between the health authority and the studios on the topic of infection protection during filming.”

The party limits in Potsdam and Berlin, the capital of Germany, is currently of 50 people due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in order to throw a party you need permission from the health authorities.

Having had 200 people in this party and not having the authorization to throw it, it might lead to the studio that hosted the party and Warner Bros. getting fined.

Even though it seems like authorization was the main issue and the number of guests present would not have been an issue if it wasn’t a party, investigations are still ongoing.

EU To Keep Budget Rules Looser For Longer Amid War Fallout

0

The European Union EU has moved to prolong looser limits on spending by member countries for an extra year in a bid to counter the economic fallout from Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The European Commission recommended on Monday suspending the EU’s regular rules on national budget discipline through 2023. The 27-nation bloc’s executive arm said member countries need the longer fiscal flexibility to tackle heightened economic risks since the Russian invasion on February 24.

The EU deactivated its full controls on national debt levels in 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. That laxer framework was due to end at the end of this year. The planned extension until the start of 2024 comes as EU countries face a drop in energy trade with Russia, a surge in inflation and many disruptions to supply chains.

“Our economy is living through a second external shock — the second in two years,” European Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni told reporters in Brussels. “The outlook is subject to downside risks and very high uncertainty.”

The European Commission’s recommendation, which needs the approval of EU finance ministers, seeks to address short-term spending needs by member countries to aid their economies without undermining a rulebook meant to prevent budget deficits from soaring to levels that triggered the Greek debt crisis in 2009.

A week ago, the commission slashed its forecasts for EU economic growth to 2.7% this year and 2.3% in 2023. Its previous outlook, published before Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine, foresaw EU growth of 4% this year and 2.8% in 2023.

Last year, the bloc’s economy expanded 5.4% following a deep recession prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. EU gross domestic product shrank 5.9% in 2020.

The plan to prolong the looser EU fiscal framework for an extra year comes amid expectations that inflationary pressures will prompt the European Central Bank in coming months to end years of loose monetary policy — including record-low interest rates — meant to help fuel economic activity in the 19-nation zone that uses the shared euro currency.

The finance ministers of Germany and the Netherlands, which are traditional defenders of budget austerity across Europe, signaled no intention to try to torpedo the European Commission recommendation. Nonetheless, they urged spending restraint by EU countries.
