Japan and the United States said Monday they want to put the first Japanese astronaut on the Moon as the allies deepen cooperation on space projects.
No non-American has ever touched down on the lunar surface, and Japan has previously said it hopes to achieve a Moon landing by the end of this decade.
President Joe Biden, after his first face-to-face meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo, said the nations will work together in the US-led Artemis programme to send humans to the Moon, and later to Mars.
Biden said he was “excited” about the collaboration, including on the Gateway facility, which will orbit the Moon and provide support for future missions.
“I’m excited (about) the work we’ll do together on the Gateway Station around the Moon, and look forward to the first Japanese astronaut joining us on the mission to the lunar surface under the Artemis programme,” he said at a joint press conference.
Japan’s domestic space programme focuses on satellites and probes, so Japanese astronauts have turned to the US and Russia to travel to the International Space Station.
But space agency JAXA is looking to revitalise its ranks, last year launching its first recruitment of new astronauts in 13 years.
It lifted the requirement that applicants have a science degree and urged women to apply, because all seven of the nation’s current astronauts are men.
Calf of Man is a small island which is separated by a narrow stretch of water from the island nation of Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, as part of the British Isles.
As it is southwest of the main island, it belongs to the parish of Rushen, and has only two seasonal inhabitants.
The name of the island comes from the Old Norse language, the word kalfr which means a small island which lies near a larger one.
It is definitely one really beautiful island, which serves as a Nature Reserve and Bird Observatory and represents a great opportunity to study bird life, flora and fauna.
Around 33 species of birds breed on the Island annually, around 10 of which are sea birds.
Over hundreds of years of its habitation it has enjoyed a variety of owners and tenants dating back centuries.
Records of it appear in Elizabethan times and there’s evidence that in the 17th Century an associate of Lord Chancellor Francis Bacon hid on the Calf for three years in order to avoid being sent to the Tower of London for allegedly taking bribes.
There are four lighthouses, two built in 1818 by Robert Stevenson to warn mariners of the hazards of the Chicken Rocks off the south end of the Calf.
Later, in 1875 these were replaced by a lighthouse which was built exactly on the Chicken Rocks.
Nonetheless, in 1968 was built the last lighthouse, which was supposed to replace the Chicken Rocks lighthouse which was destroyed in fire, but later rebuilt.
Since 1959 organized ornithological work has been carried out on the Calf of Man under the supervision of appointed wardens and in 1962 it became an officially recognized Observatory.
The Observatory is located in the former farmhouse in the center of the Island and is open from spring to autumn each year.
Even though it is only 250 hectares (620 acres) in size with the highest elevation of 127 meters (415 feet), it is one important island for the wildlife and also for researchers.

The Ukraine crisis grabbed the spotlight in Cannes on Friday as a semi-naked protester painted in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag was ejected from the red carpet.
The unidentified woman ripped off her gown revealing the Ukrainian flag colours, with the words “STOP RAPING US” emblazoned on her abdomen and red handprints on her buttocks.
The woman shouted and security officials quickly wrapped her in a jacket, removing her from the event. Guests looked bemused and the swinging festival music played on.
The brief protest took place at the world premiere of “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” with stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton poised to arrive and walk the famous steps of the Palais des Festivals.
This is not the first time individuals or groups have marched in protest of the crises between Russia and Ukraine and with all the fallout from the war, more can be expected.
At some points, these protests have co-occurred in many places worldwide. In the seven days from 24 February to 2 March, over 6,500 people in 53 cities across Russia have been detained by police for protesting against the invasion. The number of protesting Ukrainians is not accounted for.
The War in Ukraine is causing food and fuel crises. Smaller supplies and higher prices for food mean that the world’s poor could be forced to do without. Sharply rising commodity prices have been the most immediate economic impact of the Ukraine conflict and it is the people who bear the brunt.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said his side were “legends” after they secured their fourth Premier League title in five seasons.
City won the league by a point over challengers Liverpool with a stunning 3-2 win over Aston Villa on the final day at Etihad Stadium.
It is Guardiola’s 11th trophy in six years since coming to England.
“We are legends. We will be remembered. This group of players are absolutely eternal in this club,” said Guardiola.
“What we achieved, it is so difficult to do it. Sir Alex Ferguson with Manchester United has done it years ago – two or three times – now I realise again the magnitude of doing this. Now we are part of this.”
City were 2-0 down to Villa with 15 minutes left before substitute Ilkay Gundogan scored twice, either side of midfielder Rodri’s goal, in a sensational five-minute comeback.
Had they not won, Liverpool would have been champions.
https://emp.bbc.com/emp/SMPj/2.44.15/iframe.html‘We feel legends’ – Guardiola delighted with title win
“The last game is always special – a lot of emotion,” Guardiola said. “Aston Villa gave everything but the first goal changed everything. We had to handle it.
“When you win the Premier League in this country four times in five seasons, it is because these guys are so, so special.
“Winning at home in front of our people is the best. The moment we equalised, we had the feeling we had the chance to score the third.
“It was the best atmosphere I have ever lived since I am here. Hopefully tomorrow we can celebrate together in Manchester’s streets with our cigars and beers. I will bring my cigars, don’t worry.”
Liverpool won 3-1 at Wolves but could do nothing to stop Manchester City defending their title.
The top two sides lost just five games between them in the league all season.
“The magnitude of the achievement is related to the magnitude of our rival and I have never seen a team like Liverpool in my life,” Guardiola added.
“Congratulations to Liverpool – they have made us better and better each week.”
Asked whether he planned to stay beyond his current contract, which expires at the end of next season, he added: “I don’t have the energy or desire to think about next season now.
“Every season is more difficult. I would not betray the club – they give me probably the most incredible moments in my life but I have to feel it, the players have to feel it and the club has to feel it.
“Now it is time to celebrate. We are champions again.”
‘I was nearly crying when I had it in my hands’
thrilled to win title in ‘perfect way’
Forward Jack Grealish joined City said he was “nearly crying” when he finally got his hands on the Premier League trophy.
It was the first time in 17 years that City had come from 2-0 down in a league game to win.
“I’ve had a few moments in my life and in football but this is certainly right up there. I’ve come here to win trophies and to do it is unbelievable,” Grealish told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Truthfully I didn’t think we were going to win, I just didn’t. Sometimes you have those bad feelings in your head and I just didn’t think we were going to do it.”
Forward Raheem Sterling, who spent three years at Liverpool, said Jurgen Klopp’s team had “pushed” City to achieve more success.
“Each year we come in and we know how difficult it will be with the teams we have,” he said.
“Liverpool are a great opponent and every year they push us to the wire and this is why we achieve stuff like this.”
Belgian midfielder Kevin de Bruyne said his side fought until the end because they had nothing to lose.
“You just go for it – you’re losing anyway. You want to change the situation and that’s what we did,” he added.
‘Proud to bring this title to Ukraine’
Oleksandr Zinchenko was in tears at full-time as he wore the Ukrainian flag across his shoulders
Ukrainian international Oleksandr Zinchenko came on at half-time for Manchester City and made an impact when he set-up the second goal for Rodri.
He celebrated on the pitch afterwards with a Ukrainian flag draped across his shoulders, posing for photos, before wrapping it around the trophy.
“[These are] unforgettable emotions for me – for all Ukrainians who at the moment are starving, and surviving in my country because of Russian aggression,” he said.
“I am so proud to be Ukrainian and to bring this title to Ukraine, for all Ukrainian people, because they deserve it.
“It means everything for me – I would die for these people and their support. What people gave me and what they have done for me during this period – the toughest period of my life – I am so appreciative and I will never forget this, never in my life.”
‘You won’t get many better seasons’
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown said it would have been a “travesty” if City had missed out on a trophy this season, with Liverpool having picked up the two domestic cups as well as setting up a Champions League final against Real Madrid.
Former England striker Alan Shearer added: “What a team, what a season and what a standard of football we’ve witnessed.
“It’s just unbelievable what Pep Guardiola’s got at Manchester City and what Jurgen Klopp has at Liverpool. It was a brilliant afternoon for the neutral.
“I was nervous and I don’t really care who wins it – so god knows what those supporters were going through, as that was one tense afternoon. Incredible.”
‘We chased the best team in the world’
3-1 Wolves: Jurgen Klopp congratulates Manchester City on ‘well-deserved’ title
Liverpool boss Klopp said it was a “joy” to work with his players each week, but they needed “a bit more consistency in the first half of the season” to beat City to the title.
However, he described their achievements this season as “insane” and said they had pushed “the best team in the world” to the final day.
“[Finishing second] is the story of my life,” he said. “I’m still record-holder for not getting promoted in Germany with the highest points tally. You need to get more points than every other team, but we didn’t do that.
“You can’t do more than give your absolute best and that’s what the boys did again. We chased the best team in the world to the wire. That’s absolutely special. We’ll build a team again and go again.
“These boys played an insane season. This is not the end, just a result of the season.”

Antonio Conte has said he ranks leading Tottenham back into the Champions League by finishing fourth as one of the best achievements of his career.
Spurs hammered Norwich 5-0 on the final day of the season to secure their return to Europe’s top club competition at the expense of arch rivals Arsenal
Conte said taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo in November was among the biggest challenges he had faced.
“It’s never positive to come into a team during the season,” he said.
“For me it was a big challenge, maybe the biggest challenge in my career. When I stay at the top level as a coach, I wanted to prove myself in a different situation with a lot of problems to solve.
“I’m really satisfied. I want to thank my staff and my players. If we were able to reach this big achievement, it’s because everyone gave everything.”
When Conte was appointed, Spurs were eighth in the table having suffered a miserable 3-0 home defeat by Manchester United, their fifth loss in seven league games, and appeared to be in disarray.
The Italian’s reign has not been without its issues, of course, with February’s reverse at home to Wolves spelling the first time Conte had lost three league games in a row since his days managing Atalanta in 2009.
And in March, when Spurs’ 3-2 defeat by Manchester United was followed by Arsenal’s win over Leicester, Conte’s side sat six points adrift of the fourth-placed Gunners having played a game more.
But Tottenham stayed in the hunt and seized the momentum in the race for fourth with a 3-0 win in the north London derby on 12 May, and followed that with wins over Burnley and Norwich to seal a return to the Champions League after two seasons in Europe’s lesser club competitions.
Conte, who has won four Serie A titles and a Premier League with Chelsea, said he believed Tottenham could finish fourth nine games ago, at the start of April.
“I was very clear with my players and the media. I said, ‘Now I feel we are ready and can fight until the end’. It was the perfect moment. The players know very well our schedule. We made a paper with our games and it was a fantastic run apart from Brighton.”
The 1-0 loss at home to Brighton was Spurs’ only defeat in that nine-game run.
“We got fantastic results and now we’re talking about the Champions League. It’s great for everyone at Tottenham.”
‘I dreamed of Golden Boot as a child’ – Son
Son finished the campaign with 23 goals, six more than his previous highest tally in a single Premier League season
Conte described Sunday as a “perfect day” with the feeling of Champions League qualification sweetened by Son Heung-min scoring twice to share the Premier League Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah.
Dejan Kulusevski’s double, either side of a Harry Kane header, put Spurs in command at Carrow Road before Son struck twice.
The South Korean trailed the Liverpool forward by one goal going into the final game, but Salah’s goal against Wolves ensured the two players ended up joint top scorers on 23 goals.
“It’s incredible to have this award,” said Son, who became the first player other than Kane to finish as Spurs’ top league scorer since Emmanuel Adebayor in 2013-14.
“I can’t believe it. I got really emotional. I dreamed of it as a child. Literally it’s my in hands. I can’t believe it.
“Until my goal, I was really frustrated that I missed big chances. I told the players I missed the easiest chances and scored one of the toughest tones. I didn’t give up. I wanted to score today. The team helped me a lot at half-time. They wanted to help me, you could see it today.
“This season was a great lesson. Next season we can look forward to the Champions League. Everyone deserves to be there.
“Conte gives us so many different things. Before he came here, nobody believed we’d reach the Champions League.”
Spurs can look forward to rubbing shoulders with Europe’s elite once again, while Norwich must regroup after a miserable campaign and hope they can seal an immediate top-flight return, just as they did by winning last year’s Championship.
Max Verstappen fought back from an early spin to win the Spanish Grand Prix after title rival Charles Leclerc retired from a dominant lead.
It was Verstappen’s fourth victory in six races this year, helped by Red Bull imposing team orders on Sergio Perez.
It gives him the championship lead for the first time in 2022 and he heads to Monaco next weekend with a six-point advantage over Leclerc.
Mercedes’ George Russell took a strong third after a long and valiant attempt to hold Verstappen at bay early in the race.
And his team-mate Lewis Hamilton fought back to fifth place following a first-lap collision with Kevin Magnussen’s Haas, which gave the seven-time champion a puncture and dropped him to the back of the field.
Hamilton moved into fourth behind Russell with a move on Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz around the outside of Turn One with six laps to go.
But Hamilton lost the position again after being told to slow down because he had a coolant leak, and could not use full throttle.
Russell received the same message to lift-and-coast at the end of the race. In his case, his car was overheating throughout the grand prix.
Verstappen salvages victory from mistake
Verstappen has had his share of bad luck this season, with two retirements from the first three races, but he certainly enjoyed some good fortune in Spain.
Leclerc was on course for a comfortable victory after a rare error from Verstappen saw the world champion spin into the gravel at Turn Four on lap nine.
The race had looked finely poised between the two until that point, with Leclerc leading by two seconds, but Verstappen’s spin changed the complexion of the race.
It put him behind Russell, and despite the Red Bull’s much greater pace, Verstappen was unable to pass the Mercedes.
Verstappen was held back by a DRS overtaking aid that rarely worked, but at the same time Russell put in a superb defensive drive to hold the Red Bull back for 19 laps.
In the end, Red Bull decided to switch strategy to get Verstappen past Russell, and stopped him on lap 28 for a set of soft tyres.
That allowed him to run in clear air, and when he stopped again on lap 44 for a final set of mediums, he emerged ahead of Russell, with only Perez ahead.
Red Bull told the Mexican not to hold Verstappen up, and he was past into the lead a few laps later, a decision Perez said was “unfair”. On his slowing down lap, he said: “I am happy for the team, but we have to speak later.”
Heartbreak and concern for Leclerc and Ferrari
Leclerc has seen a commanding championship lead eroded over the past three races
Verstappen’s spin left Leclerc alone and unchallenged out front and he was nearly 30 seconds in the lead when he made what should have been his first pit stop for fresh tyres on lap 21.
The Ferrari re-emerged nearly six seconds in the lead, and with Russell still holding back Verstappen, Leclerc was 12.6secs in the lead and in total control when his engine failed six laps later.
Leclerc will be a strong favourite for victory in Monaco given the Ferrari’s pace in the slow- and medium-speed corners in Spain, but the team are facing a difficult moment and must bounce back quickly.
Leclerc’s team-mate Sainz was unable to salvage their day.
He made the same mistake as Verstappen, albeit two laps earlier – both drivers caught out by a tail wind at Turn Four. And after that, hampered by floor damage that reduced his car’s downforce, he lacked the pace to recover as strongly as might have been expected.
He would have finished a disappointing fifth had it not been for Mercedes’ reliability problems at the end gifting him a free pass back on Hamilton.
A mini-Mercedes revival
George Russell underlined Mercedes’ improvement by running strongly with the Red Bulls
Mercedes arrived in Spain with a car upgrade which succeeded in limiting the porpoising problems on the straight that have hamstrung them so far this season.
Russell followed it with the team’s best grid position of the year in fourth place, and he drove an outstanding grand prix.
Holding off Verstappen, Russell displayed the sort of defensive skills that his forerunner in the seat, Valtteri Bottas, so often failed to do.
Ultimately, Red Bull were able to pincer Mercedes on strategy and unleash the extra pace of their car and Russell was helpless to hold them back.
Hamilton, meanwhile, had a dispiriting start. He was fighting for fifth with Sainz going into Turn Four on the first lap, but he collided with Magnussen as the Dane tried to go around the outside and punctured his left-front tyre.
Rejoining at the back, Hamilton soon radioed to the team that he thought they might be better to retire and save engine miles. They replied that they thought he could recover to eighth.
He over-achieved significantly, driving a superb comeback race to enter the final laps behind Russell, only to slip back again.
Team boss Toto Wolff came on the radio to Hamilton on his slowing-down lap to tell him that he had the fastest race time of any driver.
Hamilton was 54 seconds off the lead after his early pit stop and only 40 seconds back heading into the final three laps, before being told to save the car, although the picture is clouded by the fact that Leclerc retired and Verstappen was both held up by Russell and cruising after he claimed the lead.
Behind him, Alfa Romeo’s Bottas took sixth, from the Alpine of Esteban Ocon and McLaren’s Lando Norris, who had been feeling ill all weekend and had to see a doctor after the race.
Norris, who was excused post-race media duties, later revealed in a team statement he had been suffering from tonsillitis.
“Today was tough,” said Norris. “I was feeling really unwell before the race as I’m suffering with tonsillitis, and that, in combination with the high temperatures, made this one of the hardest races I’ve ever done.
“I’ve been a bit on the back foot this weekend as most of my energy has been spent fighting off this illness. I’ve had to miss a lot of engineering sessions, which has compromised my weekend, and I definitely wasn’t as prepared for the grand prix as I could have been.”
And local hero Fernando Alonso drove superbly to recover to ninth after the two-time champion started from the back because of an engine change before the race.
Yuki Tsunoda took the final point for Alpha Tauri.
AC Milan won their 19th Serie A title but the first for 11 years by cruising to victory at Sassuolo.
Rossoneri fans were initially unhappy at Stefano Pioli’s appointment in 2019 given he previously managed rivals Inter, but he has masterminded this two-point success over his former club.
Olivier Giroud scored twice and Franck Kessie once as Milan won easily away.
Inter beat Sampdoria 3-0 on the final day but Simone Inzaghi’s men could not deny their city rivals.
Napoli were third after a 3-0 win at Spezia while Juventus ended their disappointing season under Massimiliano Allegri – who won the title with Milan in 2010-11 – by finishing fourth but qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Pioli brings back glory days
Milan have suffered more than a decade of disappointment since the title for Allegri in 2011 but Italian Pioli has brought back the glory days.
Former Serie A players such as Clarence Seedorf, Filippo Inzaghi, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Vincenzo Montella and Gennaro Gattuso have all since tried and failed to revive the former European champions.
Veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was part of that last Milan side that won Serie A and at the age of 40 he lifted the trophy with the club for a second time.
By winning the title, midfielder Daniel Maldini follows in the footsteps of his father Paolo Maldini, who won seven league titles with Milan, and grandfather Cesare Maldini with four.
