Russia’s President Putin Confirmed To Attend G20 Summit

0

Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to attend a G20 summit in Indonesia later this year, Russia’s ambassador to Indonesia said on Wednesday, dismissing suggestions by some G20 members that Russia could be barred from the group.

The United States and its Western allies are assessing whether Russia should remain within the Group of Twenty major economies following its invasion of Ukraine, sources involved in the discussions told Reuters.

But any bid to exclude Russia would likely be vetoed by others in the group, raising the prospect of some countries instead skipping G20 meetings, the sources said.

Russia’s ambassador to Indonesia, which currently holds the rotating G20 chair, said Putin intended to travel to the Indonesian resort island of Bali for the G20 summit in November.

Asked about suggestions Russia could be excluded from the G20, she said it was a forum to discuss economic issues and not a crisis like Ukraine.

Russia launched its invasion of its southern neighbour on Feb. 24 but Zelensky says any compromises with Russia will require referendum

Putin says Russia is carrying out “a special military operation” to stop the Ukrainian government from committing genocide – an accusation the West calls a baseless fabrication.

Russia is facing an onslaught of international sanctions led by Western countries aiming at isolating it from the global economy, including shutting it out of the SWIFT global bank messaging system and restricting dealings by its central bank.

On Tuesday, Poland said it had suggested to U.S. commerce officials that it replace Russia within the G20 group and that the suggestion had received a “positive response”.

Denzel Washington Attributes Long-Standing Successful Career To The Grace Of God

Award-winning actor, producer and director Denzel Washington is attributing his long-standing successful career to God.

Washington, 67, was recently interviewed on a popular podcast, where he spoke about his latest film, The Tragedy of Macbeth and what were some of the biggest lessons he learned throughout his career.

“One of the lessons I learned was taught by my mentor at the boy’s club, now the boy’s and girl’s club, Billy Thomas,” Washington told co-hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero. “I was running track, and a new guy joined the team. … Billy could see I was out of character because this guy was faster. He said, ‘yeah, Denzel, he’s faster than you, but he doesn’t have the fundamentals.’… He said, ‘your natural ability will only take you so far.'”

“So when I got to that place, by the grace of God, I realized I was given this ability to act and direct, but I remembered my natural ability would only take me so far,” he continued. “So, I had to study more, I had to get deeper, I had to learn more. So, that’s what I did, and it paid off, and it’s paying off now.”

When asked to share one important lesson he learned from Hollywood that people should know, Washington pointed to God’s grace as the source of all talent.

“One of the most important lessons in life that you should know is to remember to have an attitude of gratitude, of humility, understand where the gift comes from,” the actor stressed. “It’s not mine, it’s been given to me by the grace of God.”

“[To] use what I have, use what you have … to help others. On your last day, you can’t take it with you,” he said. “But you can leave it here. You never see a U-Haul behind a hearse,” he added.

At the close of every interview, guests on the podcast have a virtual neon sign placed above their heads. The sign can say whatever the guests want it to say. When co-host Desus asked Washington what he wanted his sign to say, the actor replied, “Blessed.”

According to Cinema Blend, Washington was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Macbeth. The award show takes place this Sunday. Washington, a 9-time Oscar nominee, won the coveted award twice, once for his performance in Glory (1990) and again for his performance in Training Day (2001).

China Plane Crash – Rescue Operation Halted By Rain

0

Search and rescue operations have been suspended at the crash site of a Chinese passenger plane after heavy rain sparked fears of a landslide.

State media Xinhua said soil at the crash site had absorbed a lot of water, adding “uncertainty” to the rescue.

No survivors have so far been found from China Eastern flight MU5735 which had 132 passengers when it crashed in the hills in southern China and Investigators don’t know why the plane plummeted out of the sky on Monday.

There has been an outpouring of grief in China, where families of passengers and crew are still waiting for news.

Hundreds of responders have been scouring the steeply forested slopes in Wuzhou where debris from the plane was strewn after it broke apart and set fire to the hillside.

There had been no official word on casualties until China’s Civil Aviation Administration held its news briefing on Tuesday evening, some 36 hours after the disaster.

Air controllers had repeatedly called the aircraft during its descent but had received no response.

Rescuers have so far found parts of the 737’s burnt wreckage. State broadcasters showed images of the charred remains of letters, bags, wallets and identity cards belonging to those on board.

Plane debris is seen at the site where a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Kunming to Guangzhou crashed, in Wuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China March 21, 2022.

Meanwhile, the families and friends of the 123 passengers and nine crew have gathered at each end of the flight – with relatives visiting China Eastern’s offices in Yunnan province and waiting at Guangzhou International Airport.

Sudan Denies Presence Of Russian Mercenaries

0

Sudan has denied the presence of Russian private military contractor in the country.

This follows a joint statement by British, American and Norwegian envoys that Wagner Group personnel had been engaged in social media disinformation campaigns and illegal gold mining in Sudan.

The authorities accused the Western diplomats of attempting to draw Sudan into the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Recently, Sudan’s deputy leader, Gen Mohamed Hamdan “Hemeti” Dagalo visited Moscow.

Russia’s mercenaries have been accused of committing human rights abuses in the Central African Republic.

Western countries have said that the Wagner mercenaries had been deployed in Mali.

The paramilitary group has thousands of fighters in Libya, where its mercenaries have been backing renegade general, Khalifa Haftar, against forces loyal to the UN-backed government in Tripoli.

Sudanese military leaders have maintained strong relations with Russia since long-time President Omar al-Bashir, an ally of Moscow, was toppled in April 2019 after mass protests against his rule.

In a meeting with President Vladimir Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in 2017, al-Bashir sought Moscow’s protection from what he called “aggressive acts of the United States”.

One Killed As Tornado Tears Through New Orleans Suburbs

0

At least one person has died after a large tornado tore through New Orleans, destroying homes and taking out power.

Videos showed the dark funnel cloud ploughing through neighbourhoods on Tuesday night, blowing off rooftops and overturning cars.

It hit suburbs that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The tornado was spawned by a storm system which caused widespread damage and killed a woman in Texas and Oklahoma on Monday.

Officials in the eastern St Bernard district said rescuers were searching for people who may be trapped after one person was killed and several injured.

Its parish president Guy McInnis said several houses there had been “totally demolished”.

Photos from the St Bernard neighbourhood of Arabi show crumpled cars, collapsed buildings and debris scattered across streets.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said authorities were assessing the storm’s impact.

The tornado was produced by a storm front working its way across southern US states on Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

An elderly woman was killed about 60 miles (96km) north of Dallas when a tornado struck the area on Monday.

S’Africa Companies Urged Not To Employ Illegal Migrants

0

South African companies have been urged not to employ undocumented foreign nationals to avoid tensions with citizens in the country.

President Cyril Ramaphosa made the call on Monday as he addressed residents in Koster in the North West during the official commemoration of Human Rights Day.

Earlier this month, residents in Alexandra in the north of Johannesburg embarked on the so-called Dudula campaign. The protest action led by the Dudula Movement targeted undocumented foreign nationals in the township.

The South African leader condemned the campaign at the time describing it as against South Africa’s values and warned that such actions could lead to vigilantism.

South Africa hosts the largest number of immigrants on the African continent due to its middle-income status, stable democratic institutions, and comparatively industrialized economy.

According to official estimates, the country is home to about 2.9 million immigrants, which would account for slightly less than 5 percent of the overall population of 60 million people.

However, this number is thought to be an underestimate because of the presence of large numbers of unauthorized migrants, particularly from neighboring countries, according to the Reliefweb November 2021 report.

Ex-C.A.R Militia Commander Appears Before ICC

Former Central African Republic militia leader accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, Maxime Mokom, has appeared before the International Criminal Court for the first time.

Mokom, a one-time leader of an anti-Balaka armed group, appeared on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in CAR in 2013 and 2014.

The forty-three year old was the Leader of the self-proclaimed self-defence militias created in 2013 in reaction to the takeover of Bangui by the Seleka, a coalition of armed groups mainly composed of Muslims opposed to former president Francois Bozize.

Mokom, who was handed over by Chad to the ICC in The Hague on Monday, confirmed in French his identity and said he had been informed of the crimes of which he is accused.

He is suspected of, among other things, murder, extermination, deportation or forcible transfer of people, imprisonment, torture, persecution, cruel treatment and mutilation.

His lawyer said Mokom was mistreated during his transfer by the Chadian authorities, alleging he was fed only mouldy bread and sardines, that he had no bed and “practically a chamber pot” to relieve himself.

Hearings at which the charges will be confirmed were set for January 31, 2023.

Violence by the Seleka and Anti-Balaka in CAR is said by the ICC to have left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.

Two former Central African warlords, Patrice-Edouard Ngaissona and Alfred Yekatom, who led anti-Balaka militias, are currently on trial at the ICC for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

President Macky Sall Calls For Special Drawing Rights System

0

Senegal’s President Macky Sall has called on the World Bank to support African and other developing countries through the special drawing rights system.

He made the request while meeting with World Bank president David Malpass on the second day of the World Water Forum.

The officials discussed challenges and solutions to address water crisis but economic recovery and special schemes for developing countries were per the agenda.

Macky Sall said he suggested that the World Bank looks into the possibility of implementing the Bank’s crisis and emergency response policies in order to support countries facing severe economic crisis, natural disasters and food insecurity.

Unfortunately, Africa faces a three-dimensional crisis, the situation could not be more serious, so it was essential that this mechanism be implemented.

As the leaders touched on the consequences of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on the global economy, Sall reiterated his request that Africa be granted funds through the special drawing rights system.

The SDR system is an international reserve asset, created by the IMF to supplement its member countries’ official reserves.

The international community had agreed to provide Africa with a 33 billion $ out of a 650 billion $ post-covid scheme but the A.U. deemed the amount insufficient.

World water Day was celebrated during the 9th World Water forum, the first taking place in a Sub-Saharan African country. Actors raised awareness among the public on the billions of people still living without access to safe water.

Hushpuppi: Court Moves Hearing On Abba Kyari’s Extradition To U.S. Till April 27

0

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, deferred hearing on the application seeking to extradite the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Abba Kyari to the United States of America, USA, to face trial over his alleged involvement with a notorious internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, till April 27.

Kyari is wanted in the U.S. to stand trial for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft.

A grand jury had on April 29, 2021, filed an indictment against him with the approval of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, after which a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The application for his extradition was brought before the court by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

Malami said the extradition application was based on a request by the Diplomatic Representative of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja for Kyari to be surrendered for trial.

The AGF, in an affidavit that was filed in support of the extradition application, said he was satisfied that the offence in respect of which Kyari’s surrender was sought, is not political or trivial.

He said he was also satisfied that the request for Kyari to be surrendered, was not made to persecute or punish him on account of his race, religion, nationality or political opinions, but in good faith and the interest of justice.

According to him, Kyari, “if surrendered, will not be prejudiced at his trial and will not be punished, detained or restricted in his personal liberty, by reason of his race, nationality or political opinions”, adding that having regard to all the circumstances in which the alleged offence was committed, it would not be unjust or oppressive, or severe a punishment, to surrender him.

Malami, noted that there was no criminal proceeding pending against Kyari in Nigeria, bordering on the same offence for which he is wanted in the USA.

Meanwhile, when the matter was called up on Wednesday, Kyari’s lawyer, Nureni Jimoh, SAN, told the court that his client was yet to be served with any of the processes the AGF filed against him.

Nureni said there was no way his client would have been able to respond to the extradition request, since he was not served.

Responding, counsel to the AGF, Pius Akutah, admitted that the Respondent was yet to be served with processes in the application marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/249/2022.

He said the inability of the office of the AGF to serve the Respondent was due to the drug trafficking charge the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, also entered against Kyari, before the court.

Akutah, argued that he has 14 days within which he could still effect the service in accordance with the law.

While adjourning the case, Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered the Applicant (AGF) to ensure that DCP Kyari was served before the next date.

World Number One, Ashleigh Barty, Makes Shock Call To Quit Tennis

0

World number one Ashleigh Barty has shocked the sporting world by announcing she will retire from professional tennis at just 25.

The Australian made the announcement on social media on Wednesday, saying she was leaving to “chase other dreams”.

She said she was “absolutely spent” and “physically I have nothing more to give”.

“I’m so happy and I’m so ready. I just know at the moment in my heart, for me as a person, this is right,” she said.

“I know that people may not understand it. I’m OK with that. Because I know that Ash Barty the person has so many dreams she wants to chase after that don’t necessarily involve travelling the world, being away from my family, from my home, which is where I’ve always wanted to be.”

Barty won three Grand Slam singles events, including this year’s Australian Open in January.

In doing so she became the first home player to win the Australian Open men’s or women’s singles title in 44 years.

She says her success in becoming 2021 Wimbledon champion “changed my perspective” because after achieving her ultimate personal goal in the sport, she still “wasn’t quite fulfilled”.

Barty has remained world number one since winning her first Grand Slam at the French Open in 2019 – a run of 114 consecutive weeks.

Only Steffi Graf, Serena Williams (both 186 weeks) and Martina Navratilova (156) have enjoyed longer streaks as world number one in the women’s game.

Williams is the only other active female player to have won major titles on clay, grass and hard courts, and at the time of her retirement, Barty has collected $23.8m (£17.9m) in prize money.

“I am so thankful for everything this sport has given me and leave feeling proud and fulfilled,” added Barty, who also won a Grand Slam doubles title alongside American CoCo Vandeweghe at the 2018 US Open.

“I know how much work it takes to bring the best out of yourself. I’ve said it to my team multiple times, ‘I just don’t have that in me anymore.’ Physically, I have nothing more to give. I’ve given absolutely everything I have to this beautiful sport of tennis, and I’m really happy with that.

“For me, that is my success. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. I’ll always be grateful for the lifelong memories we created together.”
