China Eastern Crash: Wallets, IDs But No Survivors Found

0

Mud-stained wallets. Bank cards. Official identity cards. Poignant reminders of 132 lives presumed lost were lined up by rescue workers scouring a remote Chinese mountainside Tuesday for the wreckage of a China Eastern flight that one day earlier inexplicably fell from the sky and burst into a huge fireball.

No survivors have been found among the 123 passengers and nine crew members. Video clips posted by China’s state media show small pieces of the Boeing 737-800 plane scattered over a wide forested area, some in green fields, others in burnt-out patches with raw earth exposed after fires burned in the trees.

Each piece of debris has a number next to it, the larger ones marked off by police tape.

Search teams planned to work through the night using their hands, picks, sniffer dogs and other equipment to look for survivors, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The steep, rough terrain and the huge size of the debris field were complicating the search for the black box, which holds the flight data and cockpit voice recorder, CCTV and the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Pay doctors’ February salaries, NMA tells Kogi governor

The Nigerian Medical Association has urged the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, to direct the full payment of February salaries of medical doctors working with the Kogi State Government.

The NMA made the call in a communiqué jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr. Omakoji Oyiguh, and Secretary, Dr. Chimezie Udebuani on Tuesday in Lokoja.

It read, “The meeting observed that the salary of the medical doctors working with the Government of Kogi State was in percentage (69.97 per cent).

“The meeting further observed that the payment in percentage was done despite lack of notice or invitation for negotiation to members whose salaries are to be affected.

“The NMA Kogi in a letter to Gov. Bello, dated March 7, drew the attention of the governor to non-invitation to participate in any negotiation and the expectation of NMA for payment of full salary for the month of February 2022,” the statement noted.

In respect of these, the NMA Kogi chapter appealed to gov. Bello to forestall any possibility of industrial action, after the administration’s “two years of peaceful and harmonious” relationship with the medical sector.

“The governor’s handlers on the issue of the percentage salary should be cautioned against doing anything that will cause a breakdown of the much-cherished relationship already developed,” the NMA said.

He said many people did not know the level of tax incentives that was available to them and the institute must see that as a Greenfield for people to take advantage of.

He said no country can do without taxes adding that people must begin to imbibe the spirit of taxation into the children for them to see tax as something good.

On his part, the chairman of the council, Emmanuel Obeng expressed his gratitude for the confidence reposed in them and pledged to serve with excellence.

He said members of the council specifically understood that their charge was to urgently fight for enhanced tax education, study of taxation and related fiscal policies that ensured efficient and effective tax practice.

This he said they would do to enhance tax administration towards improved tax revenue mobilisation to support sustainable socio-economic development, especially beyond aid.

Additionally, he noted that as part of their charge they were required to improve on tax education, which had the impetus to encourage tax conscientiousness, and voluntary tax compliance among the general citizenry.

History was made yet again at the “Healing Streams Live Healing Services” of Loveworld Inc. aka Christ Embassy. The healing power of God was clearly evident, as testimonies poured in from different parts of the world, with videos shown from the various healing centers during the service.

The special 3-day online healing program hosted by the President of LoveWorld Inc., Rev. Dr. Chris Oyakhilome D.Sc, DD, was beamed live to a global audience of more than 6.7 billion people in over 5,142 languages, witnessing an avalanche of miracles, healings and testimonies.

The March Edition of the program, which is the first in the year 2022, was tagged the biggest online healing and miracle crusade on earth at this time, with a reported participation around the world. The man of God, Pastor Chris, said the figure could be higher considering data that was being received.

The globally respected Man of God, Pastor Chris, who demonstrated God’s healing powers on the nights emphasized on the legal authority in the name of Jesus and the power of attorney in the name. He also expounded on the purpose of Jesus’ coming.

Highpoints of the services included interviews of live testifiers of the past “Healing Streams Live Healing Services”. These testifiers from previous physical healing programs and virtually from past editions of “Healing Streams Live Healing Services”, were interviewed by a senior minister of the Healing School, Evang. Dr. Eddy Owase, sharing their experiences. As each of them recounted what they were healed from and what that has done in their lives and for those around them, there was so much excitement.

No one was left out, as the man of God stretched his hands to the screen to pray for all connected, speaking healing and peace to their bodies. The man of God prayed specifically for everyone connected. Special prayers for the nations of the world, were also witnessed on the final night, declaring peace at this time.

Ithaca: Artificial Intelligence To Help Historians Unravel Ancient Texts

For the thousands of ancient texts discovered, scholars must devote countless hours in deciphering faded writing, filling in missing characters and sections of texts and determining the age and origin of the text.

Normally, epigraphers – scholars who study ancient texts written on durable materials such as stone, metal or pottery – use their own knowledge of repositories of information and digital databases performing “string matching” searches to find textual and contextual parallels.

However, differences in the digital-search query that can exclude or conceal relevant results and that the texts often are discovered not in their original context can complicate the work.

In a new research paper published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Nature, Thea Sommerschield, a historian and Marie Curie fellow at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and a fellow at Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies, and Yannis Assael, a research scientist at Google’s artificial-intelligence research lab DeepMind, presented their Ithaca state-of-the-art AI technology.

Ithaca is the first deep-neural network meant to improve the task of restoring and attributing ancient texts.

It uses deep learning for geographical and chronological attribution for the very first time and on an unprecedented scale, the researchers said.

An AI deep-learning model is based on a neural network inspired by the biological neural networks we have in our brains, which can discover and utilize complicated statistical patterns in large amounts of data.

Recent increases in computational power have enabled these models to tackle challenges of growing sophistication in many fields, including the study of ancient languages, the researchers said.

Ithaca is trained on the largest dataset of ancient Greek inscriptions and across the ancient Mediterranean world between the seventh century BCE and the fifth century CE, the researchers said.

These texts were chosen because of the varied contents and context already existing for them and because of the available digitized database for ancient Greek, they said.

Ithaca is meant to be a collaborative technology, focusing on collaboration, decision support and interpretability, the researchers said.

While Ithaca alone achieves 62% accuracy when restoring damaged texts, combining it with the use by historians improved the results’ accuracy from 25% to 72%, they said.

Ithaca includes different visualization aids to increase the ability of researchers to interpret the results, allowing them to evaluate multiple possibilities.

This could help historians increase precision by narrowing the wide or vague date brackets they must sometimes resort to, the researchers said.

They added that their research shows how models such as Ithaca can “unlock the cooperative potential between artificial intelligence and historians,” impacting the way one of the most important periods in human history is studied and written about,

India Rupee Hits New Historic Low Of 181.35 Against US Dollar

0

There was no respite from the declining rupee trend on Monday as the currency dropped to a new all-time low of Rs181.35 against the US dollar in the inter-bank market during intra-day trade despite a decrease in the current account deficit.

The movement of the local currency against the greenback is being driven by sentiments, besides the demand and supply.

According to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), rupee closed at Rs180.57 on Friday.

Moreover, the looming political crisis and worries about the next tranche of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan kept the currency under pressure.

There has been no progress on Pakistan and the IMF’s seventh review talks for the release of the next loan tranche following the breaches committed by the government on different fronts.

The IMF showed concerns about the PM’s relief package.

Contrary to the expectations of the market, the declining current account deficit failed to entice investors and the currency continued to drop to new lows.
