Chad Military Begins Talks With Opposition Groups

0

Chad’s military government has met some 44 armed rebel and opposition groups to hold peace talks in Qatar.

This first step is taken to work towards ending a rebellion and holding elections in the nation.

Some of the opposition groups were however missing at the opening on Sunday in Doha despite having delayed the meeting from February 27.

Albert Pahimi Padacke, Chad’s Prime Minister, and Moussa Faki Mahamat, African Union Commission head told the opening of the conference that both sides would have to make concessions for the talks to succeed.

However, the process risks being protracted and complicated.

Last April, the landlocked African nation was thrown into turmoil after the killing of longtime leader Idriss Deby Itno in battle with rebels in the country’s north.

FCT residents lament month-old power blackout

0

Many residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have continued to count their losses following the power blackouts in most parts of the Territory.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while some parts of the Territory are supplied power for some hours, some areas have not even had it for five consecutive days.

The poor power supply or blackouts in some parts of the Territory had lingered for more than a month.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) had attributed the poor supply of electricity to its franchise areas to low power generation from the national grid.

Mr Donald Etim, the AEDC Chief Marketing Officer, had said this in a statement issued in Abuja on March 4.

The development had led to load shedding in the affected areas.

Electricity consumers residing in Lugbe, Kuje, Area10, Central Area, Kubwa told NAN in Abuja on Sunday that the poor power supply had affected their sources of income as well as their health.

ASUU meets today for declaration of possible total, indefinite, suffocating strike

0

National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced that it will be meeting on Sunday evening, March 13, for a review of its ongoing one month total and comprehensive warning strike, which is coming one day to its expiration.

The crucial meeting which is slated to hold in Abuja will likely be for the declaration of a possible total, indefinite and suffocating strike.

This disclosure is contained in a tweet post on Sunday, March 13, by ASUU on its official Twitter handle, where the current strike action and other matters affecting the lecturers’ union will be discussed.

The tweet post from ASUU reads, ‘’ASUU Executives will be meeting this evening for declaration of a possible total, indefinite and suffocating strike.’’

Based on feelers and utterances of ASUU officials, it is quite unlikely that the union will back down on their industrial action but will rather extend the strike as there had not been any positive development since talks with the Federal government started.

NDLEA To Boost Drug War With 650 Officers From Infantry School

0

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has scaled up its preparedness to wage relentless war against drug cartels in Nigeria when 650 officers of its Strike Force unit graduated from the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI), Jaji, Kaduna State, after rigorous specialised trainings.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) told the graduating operatives to be mindful that their graduation is a milestone in their professional career.

“This specialised training and the skill acquired will no doubt enhance your competence in the special role you are playing for the agency in the war against illicit drugs.

“It is important that I should remind you that as the agency scales its operation against illicit drugs trafficking, your service will become increasingly essential to the successful attainment of our organisational goals.

“The special nature of your training requires that you serve as force multiplier to the conventional NDLEA staff in the field. I have no doubt that you will measure up to the demand of the job because generations of military and paramilitary personnel have passed through this course and have distinguished themselves on the field.

“More so, the progress report I received, including on-the-spot assessment, confirmed that the objective of the course has been achieved. Therefore, as you graduate today, I urge you not to rest on your oars as your competence will be tested from time to time by challenges that will recur in your career as anti-narcotic operatives.”

Marwa, represented by his Special Adviser, Col. Yakubu Bako (rtd), reminded the operatives that the Strike Force was one of NDLEA’s tactical creations of 2021 to add strength and purpose to its drug supply reduction effort by providing cover for officers and men of NDLEA who have to work in dangerous terrain while carrying out their duties.

“The merit of having the Strike Force was evident in the month of February when on two occasions the agency was able to successfully carry our raid, seizure and destruction of a significant amount of psychotropic substance in territories which in the past were hostile and almost out of bounds for narcotic officers.”

Femi Branch, Grace-Charis Bassey Star In New Kingsview Original ‘Helpline’

Kingsview TV has debuted yet another compelling family themed inspirational film ‘Helpline’.

The film follows the story of Nonso, an 8-year-old forced to witness his parents’ marriage of 15 years deteriorate.

With his family on the verge of collapse, Nonso takes to writing letters to God detailing his family’s woes hoping for a miracle.

Speaking on the movie, its Executive Producer, Yemi Akinwunmi notes that the overarching vision is to address present-day issues from the point of view of different generations. According to her, ‘Helpline’ is a relatable story that mirrors some of the societal issues families go through.
