Loango National Park is a unique national park which is located in the western part of the Gabonese Republic.
What makes this park so much interesting for everyone is that includes diverse coastal habitat within which is also the Iguéla Lagoon making it the only significant example of a typical western African lagoon system that is protected within a national park.
Being one of the most amazing places in Africa where it is still possible to experience the rhythms of equatorial Africa in its most primitive state, as it once was.
The entire national park is comprised of savannah, pristine beach, forest and mangroves that also incorporates a high percentage of water across the whole area.
Declared at first as a regional fauna reserve in 1956, it was established as Loango National Park in 2002, and this 1,550 square km (600 square mi) area is nearly devoid of people, motivating visitors who are coming here in small numbers in order to be the witnesses of this rare and exotic tropical gem from Gabon.
Holding one of the highest densities of wildlife in the world, there are plenty varieties of species which can be seen here, such as the forest elephants, red forest buffaloes, hippos, chimpanzees, western lowland gorillas, duikers, leopards, crocodiles, western lowland gorillas, in addition to the impressive marine life like the world’s largest concentration of humpback whales and dolphins after South Africa.
Even though most of the exploration of Loango can be done by boat, on foot or from a vehicle, there are the locals who are able to be the guides of all those adventurous enthusiasts who would like to get a glimpse of the still untouched nature.
The best time to visit the park is in December and January where most the wildlife can be seen, while between February and April is the wet season which is followed with torrential downpours.
During the dry season, which is between May and September, the air is still humid and quite warm, making it more difficult for people to move around.
All in all, there are not that many people who are coming to the small African republic, and even though the visitors can be counted in the low hundreds, Loango National Park shall definitely become one of the most interesting, if not most intriguing parks on the entire continent.

The Clinical Pharmacists Association of Nigeria has commended the recent move by the Federal House of Representatives to pass a bill that would reconstitute the governing boards of Federal University Teaching Hospitals.
A statement issued by CPAN National Chairman, Dr. Joseph Madu, disclosed that the proposed bill is long overdue, stressing that it should not be delayed anymore.
Tagged ‘A Bill for an Act to amend the University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards etc.) Act Cap U15 LFN 2004’, the proposed legislation, sponsored by Hon. Bamidele Salam, representing Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency of Osun state, seeks to restructure the composition of the governing boards of tertiary health institutions to make them more vibrant and efficient.
The bill, which had passed the second reading, also seeks to include pharmacists, nurses, laboratory scientists and other medical professionals in the board of tertiary hospitals.
According to Madu, the current legal regime which serves as a guide for the appointment of leaderships into tertiary hospitals has done more harm than good.
“The level of the unheard-of rivalry in our health care team is mainly because of the current laws guiding the appointment of the headship of our tertiary health institutions.
“The laws have done nothing but promote disharmony, and the end result has been Nigeria’s very poor health index, as well as very low life expectancy in the country,” he said.
Madu noted that it has become a trend for certain health care practitioners to threaten strike whenever fellow health professionals in other disciplines are promoted or appointed to a higher cadre in the health sector.
“We need to borrow a leaf from countries where things are working well. In those countries, headship is situational and based on competence.
“It is not the birthright of any particular professional as our laws have made it seem in the past decades. This is because the job of the head of a hospital is purely administrative.
“The bill will undoubtedly end interdisciplinary rivalry and disharmony within our tertiary health care institutions. It is in tandem with international best practices as seen in many countries like the UK, the US, France, etc,” he said.
Indonesia’s Mount Merapi continued to erupt Friday, forcing authorities to halt tourism and mining activities on the slopes of the country’s most active volcano.
The volcano on the densely populated island of Java unleashed clouds of hot ash shortly before midnight Wednesday into early morning Thursday and fast-moving pyroclastic flows — a mixture of rock, lava and gas — traveled up to 5 kilometers down its slopes.
It was Mount Merapi’s biggest lava flow since authorities raised its danger level in November 2020, said Hanik Humaida, the head of Yogyakarta’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center.
Dozens of light eruptions continued during the day Thursday with a river of lava and searing gas clouds flowing 2.5km down its slopes.
No casualties were reported. About 253 people were evacuated to temporary shelters but they returned to the volcano’s fertile slopes after the activity subsided, Humaida said.
Authorities have closed at least five tourism attractions located within the danger zone of 5km from the crater and halted mining activities along the volcano’s rivers, Humaida said. Activities out of the danger zone remained open.
Mount Merapi is the most active of more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia and has repeatedly erupted with lava and gas clouds recently.
Nigerians has been urged to be more hygienic and careful of the food they consume by the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners, Ogun State chapter.
The Association made the call as part of the celebration of World Kidney Day on Thursday, with the theme, ‘Bridge the knowledge gap to better kidney health”.
The state chairman of the association, Rabiu Kusimo said this in a statement issued on Thursday, in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Kusimo cautioned Nigerians that to avert kidney disease, they should be more conscious of their food intake.
The medical expert noted that the kidney contributes to normal health by removing waste products from the body, balancing the body’s fluid, releasing hormones that regulate blood pressure, and producing an active form of vitamin D that promotes strong and healthy bones.
He said, “There are many people all over the world suffering from one form of kidney disease or another. It is important for every person to take responsibility for their health by taking deliberate care about what they eat, drink, or even get exposed to their environment.
“Our intakes have a way of passing through the kidneys as products of metabolism and such products may injure the soft tissues of the kidneys if they are harmful, as such, individuals should take note and report any abnormal feelings in any part of their body early to the health care providers to get necessary attention and advice before it is too late.”
The doctor, however, advised people to be more mindful of what they consume as the kidney was a vital and sensitive organ.

He said “innovation is key to promoting digital transformation and green energy. I am very happy that the ‘Ihatch’ program will inspire Nigerian youths to brush up on their innovative ideas and maximize opportunities for empowerment. I hope this program will contribute to the success of not only the Nigeria market but also the global market.”
He explained that “the important part of the program will not only bring private sector funding to the start-ups but also provide training to Nigerian Youths.
An oil refinery in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, was attacked by drone, causing a small fire that did not cause injuries or affect supplies, the energy ministry said Friday.
The statement did not specify where the drone strike was launched from. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The kingdom’s oil facilities have been a target of Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the past.
The Iranian-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for a shocking attack in 2019 at the Abqaiq oil processing facility in Eastern Province, which temporarily knocked out half the kingdom’s daily production.
The ministry statement, published by the state-run Saudi Press Agency, was released shortly after midnight Friday and said the attack took place around 4:40 a.m. on Thursday.
The ministry said such attacks not only target Saudi Arabia, but also the security and stability of energy supply to the world.
Saudi Arabia has been involved in Yemen’s civil war since 2015, fighting against the Houthis who overran the capital of Sanaa and ousted the government there from power. Despite seven years of fighting and war, the Houthis remain in control of Sanaa and much of northern Yemen.
The war in Yemen has killed tens of thousands of people, both fighters and civilians, and spawned the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Many more have been internally displaced.
Around 13 million Yemenis are headed for starvation due to a protracted civil conflict and a lack of funding for humanitarian aid, the U.N. food agency has warned.
