Protests Ring Out In Europe Demanding End To Ukraine Invasion

0

Around 41,600 people demonstrated in 119 protests in towns and cities across France, over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Aline Le Bail-Kremer, a member of Stand with Ukraine, one of the groups which organised the protest said they would be there every weekend, in Paris or elsewhere, until Putin leaves, withdraws his tanks

According to interior ministry estimates. In Paris itself, some 16,000 turned out.

Nataliya, a French-Ukrainian woman who did not wish to give her surname to protect her son who is in Ukraine, said despite the suffering, they will win.

One of the largest rallies to demand the withdrawal of Russia’s troops from Ukraine on the invasion’s 10th day was in Zurich where organisers believed 40,000 people took part, according to Switzerland’s ATS news agency.

Demonstrators in the largest Swiss city called for “peace now”, while others carried signs saying: “Stop War” and “Peace”. Hundreds also turned out in London including Ukrainians whose families were forced to flee Russian bombs.

In the centre of Rome, unions and organisations rallied in a large “procession of peace”, demonstrating against Putin but also NATO.

More than a thousand people also demonstrated in the Croatian capital Zagreb with banners saying: “Stop the War, Save Europe” and “Glory to Ukraine”.

In the Balkans, the invasion has revived dark memories of the bloody break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, which killed over 100,000 people during a series of conflicts.

Last weekend, hundreds of thousands also turned out in yellow and blue across Europe including in Russia, Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic.

Hundreds Of Bakeries Shut In Sri Lanka After Cooking Gas Runs Out

0

Nearly 1,000 bakeries have closed in Sri Lanka due to a severe shortage of cooking gas, an industry association said on Monday, as the impact of dwindling foreign exchange reserves ricochets through the country’s economy.

The island nation is facing its worst financial crisis in a decade with foreign exchange reserves shrinking 70% to $2.36 billion in January, leaving the government struggling to pay for imports including food, medicine and fuel.

People are lining up at fuel pumps across the country and a shutdown of multiple power plants has led to rolling power cuts, sometimes lasting more than seven hours a day.

N.K. Jayawardena, chairman of the Ceylon Bakery Owners Association, said the cooking gas shortage has almost doubled bread prices to about 150 rupees ($0.75) in some urban areas.

Jayawardena, whose association, the largest in the sector in the country, represents some 7,000 members said the government must find a solution urgently

He said if this situation lasts for one more week, 90% of bakeries will have to close as many bakers have taken out loans and they will not be able to repay them.

Two government spokesmen could not be immediately reached for comment on the bakeries but ministers have said they are working to normalise fuel distribution.

While bread products are not such a vital staple as rice, nearly every village and town would have at least one bakery supplying breads for curries and snacks to families and workers.

The gas shortage is also hitting small restaurants and households, with dozens of cooking gas retailers forced to suspend business due to lack of supplies.

Russia will stop Aggression If Ukraine Meets Terms – Kremlin

0

Russia has told Ukraine it is ready to halt military operations “in a moment” if Kyiv meets a list of conditions, according to a Kremlin spokesman on Monday.

Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was demanding that Ukraine cease military action, change its constitution to enshrine neutrality, acknowledge Crimea as Russian territory, and recognise the separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent states.

It was the most explicit Russian statement so far of the terms it wants to impose on Ukraine to halt what it calls its “special military operation”, now in its 12th day.

Russia has attacked Ukraine from the north, east and south, pounding cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv and the port of Mariupol.

The invasion launched on Feb. 24, has caused the worst refugee crisis in Europe since World War Two, provoked outrage across the world, and led to heavy sanctions on Moscow.

But the Kremlin spokesman insisted Russia was not seeking to make any further territorial claims on Ukraine and said it was “not true” that it was demanding Kyiv be handed over.

On the issue of neutrality, Peskov said: “They should make amendments to the constitution according to which Ukraine would reject any aims to enter any bloc.”

He added that they have also spoken about how they should recognise that Crimea is Russian territory and that they need to recognise that Donetsk and Lugansk are independent states. And that’s it. It will stop in a moment.”

Iran Stands Firm Amid Russia Guarantees Over Nuclear Deal

Iran says it will not be dictated to by foreign interests, after Russia appeared to link efforts to revive a deal over its nuclear programme to sanctions over Ukraine, which Moscow’s envoy to Tehran called a misunderstanding.

A deal over reviving Iran’s 2015 pact with world powers seemed close, all parties to negotiations in Vienna said on Friday after months of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov added uncertainty on Saturday, saying Moscow wanted a written U.S. guarantee that its trade, investment and military-technical cooperation with Iran would not be hindered by Western sanctions imposed since it invaded Ukraine.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said Tehran would not allow foreign elements to undermine its national interests, while the foreign ministry said it awaited an explanation from Russia.

The Iranian semi-official news agency Tasnim quoted Moscow’s Ambassador to Tehran Levan Dzhagaryan as saying that Russia – which France on Monday warned not to resort to blackmail over efforts to revive the deal – planned to give Iran an explanation of the guarantees it has requested from the United States.

Asked about Lavrov’s statement about linking Ukraine sanctions to the nuclear pact, Dzhagaryan told Tasnim “there is a misunderstanding in this regard.” He did not elaborate.

Oil prices hit their highest since 2008 on Monday amid market supply fears as the United States and European allies considered banning Russian oil imports and prospects for a swift return of Iranian crude to global markets receded.

Russia Boycotts U.N. Court Hearings On Ukrainian Genocide

0

Russia boycotted hearings at the U.N.’s highest court on Monday during which Ukraine is seeking an emergency order to halt hostilities, arguing that Moscow has falsely applied genocide law to justify its invasion.

Hearings began at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) without legal representation for Russia.

Ukrainian envoy Anton Korynevych said the fact that Russia’s seats are empty speaks loudly, adding that they are not in this court of law but rather are on a battlefield waging an aggressive war.

The court said it regretted Russia’s non-attendance. A hearing initially set for Tuesday for Russia to present its case is expected to be cancelled but in earlier cases before the ICJ where a party did not show up to present its side the court ruled without input from such parties.

Countries usually, but do not always, follow the court’s orders, which are legally binding. A spokesperson for the Russian Embassy in the Netherlands did not reply to a request for comment.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Russia’s “special military action” is needed “to protect people who have been subjected to bullying and genocide” – meaning those whose first or only language is Russian – in eastern Ukraine.

Russian-backed separatists have fought Ukrainian forces in two eastern breakaway regions of the country since 2014, with some 15,000 people killed, according to the government in Kyiv.

A leading association of genocide scholars has backed Ukraine and Western powers’ view that Russia was misappropriating the term genocide to describe the treatment of Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine.

Hardship makes Nigerians prone to mental illness – Psychiatrist

0

President, Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, Prof. James Obindo, has said that Nigerians are prone to mental illnesses, due to the visible hardships in the country.

Obindo said this in an interview with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

The APN president spoke while giving an insight on the country’s constitutional amendment, particularly as it affects punitive measures for attempted suicide, Correctional Service Bill, and advocacy for the passage of the Mental Health and substance Bill in the country.

According to reports, mental health management became more critical globally within the last two years, largely due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which impacted negatively on the world’s socio-economic and governance order.

But in Nigeria, the pandemic made it more complicated, owing to what many experts described as consistent neglect of the mental healthcare sub-sector by successive administrations in the country.

For instance, even before the outbreak of the pandemic, statistics from the World Health Organisation had indicated that one in every four Nigerians, an average of 50 million people, were suffering from mental illness.

Obindo stressed that about 60 per cent of Nigerians had been documented to have a significant mental illness.

According to him, the development is made worse, as there are fewer mental health workers such as psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists and others, in the country, to treat and manage patients.

The president noted that more than half of the number of mental health workers had been attracted to foreign countries.

“We don’t have enough mental health workers in the country and even the few that we have are all being attracted out of the country.

“We have less than 300 psychiatrists. The prescribed number is such that we should have nothing less than 1 to about 10,000 individuals.

“But what we have is 0.4 to about 10,000 individuals, four psychiatrists to 1 million Nigerians. The psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse, psychologist, social worker, as well as occupational therapist, work as a team. Psychiatric hospitals are also few,” he lamented.

Obindo noted that in addition to the current scarcity of fuel across the country, economic hardship, coupled with the level of insecurity, may likely inflict mental illness on more Nigerians.

“In the last few years, Nigerians have had to deal with issues like kidnapping, attacks and socio-economic downturns among others, and the recent fuel scarcity, forcing an individual to stay on queue for more than three hours to buy fuel even at exorbitant prices, is a major stressor for Nigerians, as stress is a major predisposing factor to mental illness.

“If one’s well-being is affected, such that an individual is not able to realise his potential or finds it difficult to work effectively or contribute to the society and be able to overcome normal stresses of life, then the person cannot be said to be mentally healthy.

“If you look at this and you compare it with what goes on in other climes, you will discover that we have a greater predisposition to developing mental illness,” he explained.

The President urged the government to decriminalise attempted suicide, adding that instead of punishing people who attempt to take their lives, they should be sent for medical attention.

“This bill talks about how to have a humane and globally accepted way of taking care of those who are mentally ill. What should be done is how the government is meant to fund and see to the wellbeing of those who are mentally ill.

“One of the other areas that need to be looked at is the criminal act CAP 237, which criminalises those who attempt to take their lives and that needs to be removed immediately. Those who attempt to take their lives are jailed for one year.

“Are we punishing them for being ill, or for the socio-economic problems in the country? No, we shouldn’t. What should be done is that they should be referred for medical attention, a psychiatric assessment.

“Even Ghana and Kenya have decriminalised suicide attempts. We are pleading with the good people of the country and all stakeholders to rise up and see that the ill among us are properly and humanely attended to,” he noted.

He also urged the government to speedily pass the mental health bill to protect the right of mentally ill persons in society, to be treated humanely and with care.

“The Lunacy Act looks at those who are mentally ill as being aggressive, nuisance and someone that needs to be kept in an asylum, away from the community.

“Rather than taking care of those that are mentally ill, the law tends to protect the community against them. Therefore, we felt that that law needed a review.

“As we talk now, the mental health bill has been passed by both the Senate and House of Representatives and has been harmonised and is now before the President for his assent. This has been between 2020 and early 2021,” he said.

Obindo added that about 90 per cent of those who attempted to take their lives are known to have psychiatric problems.

He noted that out of the figure, 80 per cent are as a result of depression. Others he said, are because of the socio-economic conditions in the country.

EPL: It’s Unforgivable – Roy Keane, Neville Slam Man Utd Players After 4-1 Defeat To Man City

0

Former Manchester United captain, Roy Keane, has slammed players in the current squad for “giving up” during their 4-1 defeat at Manchester City on Sunday.

Keane questioned their lack of desire and insisted some of them shouldn’t play for the Red Devils.

“Manchester United gave up and in a derby, in any game, it’s unforgivable.

“I can forgive mistakes, but not running back, not trying to tackle – there are players out there who shouldn’t play for Manchester United,” Keane said

Kevin Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez scored twice each, while Jadon Sancho got the only goal for United.

The win leaves United in fifth place one point behind Arsenal, who have three matches in hand.

It’s ‘Embarrassing’ – Gary Neville

Gary Neville has slammed Manchester United as embarrassing after his former club were beaten 4-1 by city rivals, Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Nevile also noted that the Red Devils “threw the towel in” during the game.

Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez scored two each of the halves to give City’s six-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Jadon Sancho scored Manchester United’s only goal in the encounter.

“Manchester United’s response to going 3-1 down has been embarrassing. Ninety-two per cent possession for City? They have given up,” Sky Sports pundit Neville said on co-commentary.

“They are walking around the pitch. It’s nowhere near good enough.

“As a Manchester United fan, it’s embarrassing.

“The effort and intensity from United in the last 20 minutes was non-existent.

“The scoreline isn’t the problem. It’s the response to going 3-1 down that’s the problem. They have thrown the towel in.”

With the loss, Arsenal have now displaced Manchester United from the fourth position after the Gunners defeated Watford in an earlier game played on Sunday.

It also means that Pep Guardiola’s City are now six points above Liverpool in the battle for the 2021-2022 Premier League title with the Reds having a game in hand.

Kalu Makes Watford Debut As Arsenal Win Five-Goal Thriller

0

Super Eagles midfielder Samuel Kalu marked his debut for Watford in their 2-3 Premier League loss against Arsenal at Vicarage Road on Sunday.

The Nigeria international who joined Watford in the January transfer reason replaced Tom Cleverley in the 89th minute, but could not save the Hornets from defeat as Arsenal claimed all three points at the end of the five-goal thriller.

This very entertaining encounter saw four superb goals, beginning with Martin Odegaard and Bakary Saka linking up on the right flank before the former pulled the ball back for the Norwegian to slot home.

Arsenal’s Brazilian striker Gabriel Martinelli (C) celebrates after scoring his team third goal during the English Premier League football match between Watford and Arsenal at Vicarage Road Stadium in Watford, north-west of London on March 6, 2022.

Then came the coup de gras. Kiko clipped a ball to the back post which hung in the air invitingly for Cucho Hernandez to launch at the ball with a bicycle kick that powered low past Aaron Ramsdale’s left hand.

Arsenal took the lead once more on the half-hour mark when Saka exchanged passes with Lacazette before powering an effort inside the top right hand corner with Ben Foster diving the other way.

The game seemed effectively over as a contest eight minutes into the second half when Odegaard flicked the ball to Lacazette on the edge of the area and he laid the ball back for Gabriel Martinelli to curl an effort just inside the top left corner.

Moussa Sissoko ensured a nervous ending for Arsenal when he beat Ben White in the box before slipping a shot past Ramsdale.
