ASUU Demands Action As Federal Govt. Sets Timeline To Implement Agreements

0

The meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has again ended with the lecturers asking the government to act on its demands.

The Federal Government fixed a timeline of six weeks for the new committee set up by the Federal Ministry of Education to round off everything on the conditions of service for the university lecturers.

President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, at the resumed meeting with federal Government team on Tuesday in Abuja, said all ASUU members, students and Nigerians wanted to see was action from the government.

The ASUU leader said its members want to see the federal government release money for revitalisation, pay the earned academic allowances, put a stop to proliferation of universities among others.

He said the money that ought to have been used to fund education was being lost to other countries.

The ASUU leader called for a declaration of emergency in the sector to solve the problem.

Prof Osodeke: “The education sector in Nigeria is in crisis and money is being lost in the primary, secondary and tertiary education levels.”

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige at the end of the marathon meeting on Tuesday night, expressed hope that ASUU would call off its ongoing four-week warning strike this week.

Ngige told reporters that the meeting agreed on many things and put timelines for the implementation of the agreements.

The Minister said ASUU agreed to go back to its members with the government offers and report back to him before the end of the week.

He said that many of the items in the 2020 Memorandum of Action (MOA) had been dealt with exhaustively while some were being addressed.

Abia Varsity In dire Need Of Funding- School VC

Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, is currently faced with challenges that include funding.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, disclosed this while addressing newsmen on the occasion of his 365 days in office.

He said, “There is a dire need for a significant infusion of funds for the upgrade of our physical environment, especially when considering that this university is among those universities that started without a take-off grant from the government.

“The University experienced a lot of slowing down due to paucity of funds which is a major brick wall to the university’s desire to change the state of her infrastructure and physical facilities.”

According to him, the university pays dearly for fuel and diesel and has lost two students due to the poor condition of the federal road there.

In spite of these and more, the VC described his one year in office as “a year of experience and impact on the hard and soft components” of the achievements of his administration, adding, “the past 12 months have been tough but we are making headway”.

He highlighted the soft components to include digitalisation of university processes, information dissemination, students and staff welfare, alumni welfare, partnerships and Memoranda of Understanding, conflict resolution, and research and innovation.

The hard components, he said include multiple infrastructure development, commercialisation of the university through bread, biscuit factory, filing station, commercial fish ponds, and agricultural land equipment.

He noted that under his administration, inaugural and other public lectures have been sustained, while students of the University had excelled in public debates and quiz competitions.

“It has been a bittersweet one year, one that accommodated the good, the bad and the ugly. While we relish the good, we must find ways to confront the bad and the ugly head-on by working hard and diligently,” the VC said.

He also reiterated that the efforts of his administration would be hinged on “prudent management, fairness, friendship and partnership, physical development, research and innovation, staff and student’s welfare and information and communication”.

They are the FCT University of Science and Technology Abaji (Establishment) Bill, 2022; and Federal University of Environmental Technology, Koroma/Saakperwa Tai Ogoni, Rivers State (Establishment) Bill, 2022.

Vice-Chairman of the Committee, Senator Sandy Onuh, in a presentation on behalf of the Chairman, Ahmad Babba Kaita, said the bill to establish the Federal Capital Territory University of Science and Technology, Abaji, would provide the legal framework needed by the institution to close the knowledge gap in science and technology.

According to the lawmaker, the bill to establish the Federal University of Environmental Technology would allow for academic and professional programmes leading to the award of first degrees, post-graduate degrees, and diplomas with special emphasis on environmental technology and research.

Both bills to establish the two federal universities were passed by the chamber after consideration by the Committee of the Whole.

Novak Djokovic Splits With Coach Marian Vajda For Second Time

0

Former world number one Novak Djokovic has split from his coach Marian Vajda for a second time.

Serbia’s Djokovic, 34, lost the number one ranking to Russian Daniil Medvedev on Monday.

The Serb, a 20-time Grand Slam winner, began working with Slovakian Vajda as a teenager in 2006 and the pair briefly split for one year in 2017.

“Marian has been by my side during the most important and memorable moments in my career,” said Djokovic.

“Together we have achieved some incredible things and I am very grateful for his friendship and dedication over the last 15 years.”

Djokovic and Vajda agreed to part company at the end of a 2021 season in which the Serb won three Grand Slams.

Having been deported from Australia on the eve of the Australian Open last month, Djokovic returned to action in Dubai last week where he lost to Jiri Vesely in the quarter-finals.

Vajda said he would look back on their time together “with immense pride” and added he was looking “forward to new challenges”.

Tyson Fury Says He Will Retire After Dillian Whyte Fight In April

0

Britain’s heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury says he will retire after the defence of his WBC title against Dillian Whyte in April.

The unbeaten 33-year-old is a two-time world champion, winning 31 of 32 professional fights.

He drew with American Deontay Wilder in the first of their three fights, before winning the second and third bouts.

Asked whether he would call time on his career after fighting Whyte at Wembley Stadium on 23 April, Fury said: “100%.”

Speaking after his news conference to promote his upcoming bout, Fury said: “I’m a two-time undisputed world champion.

“[I have] £150m in the bank and nothing to prove to anybody.”

Fury – who has hinted at walking away from boxing before – was expected to face the winner of Anthony Joshua’s rematch with Ukranian WBA (Super), IBF and WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk later this year, should he beat Whyte.

That potential scenario to unify all the heavyweight belts had kept alive the possibility of a long-awaited fight between Fury and Joshua, after negotiations ended ended last year.

No-show Whyte ‘terrified’ – Fury

Fury says compatriot Whyte is “terrified” after the Londoner missed the pair’s news conference for their fight.

Whyte is the mandatory challenger to Fury’s WBC title and is believed to be in preparation in Portugal.

“He’s definitely shown the white flag in my estimation,” said Fury.

Whyte is only getting 20% of the fight purse and there was speculation he was seeking to renegotiate terms before signing his contract last week.

But Fury’s promoter Frank Warren argued the 33-year-old was getting a career-high pay-day.

Fury added: “He’s given me that much more confidence it’s unbelievable.

“He’s terrified. The way he’s going on about it, saying he doesn’t want to go face-to-face, of course he doesn’t, because he’ll see that fire in my eyes and he’ll think, ‘I’m getting smashed to bits’.

“That’s what it is – it’s fear, it’s terror. It’s all of the above and I don’t blame him for not being here today.”

Fury the showman turns up again

There was a huge media turnout and as we all made our way to the press room at Wembley Stadium, we were told Whyte would not be attending.

The Londoner – who has sparred on social media with Fury a number of times over the years – has been pretty much off grid since the bout was announced.

Whyte’s no-show on Tuesday is probably down to his frustration at how the fight has been negotiated.

He has had longstanding ongoing legal battles with the WBC regarding his mandatory status and was further aggrieved at the governing body for ordering an 80% purse split in favour of Fury.

He only signed the contract for the fight with a few hours to go last week.

But Fury – in full showman mode – was on hand, and on form. Just some of the soundbites included: “Even Tyson Fury versus his own shadow sells” and “this is going to be a Ferrari racing a Vauxhall Corsa”.

He even challenged all of those in the room to a sing-off or dance-off. There were no takers.

Promoter Frank Warren said it was a “disgrace” that Whyte did not turn up. Fury said it would damage Whyte’s legacy.

Making this all-British clash has not been straightforward. And should Whyte not appear at future media events, promoting it will not be straightforward either.

Russian drivers have been banned from competing in the UK by the national motorsport authority.

Motorsport UK will refuse to recognise licences of competitors from the Russian federation until further notice.

It means Nikita Mazepin cannot race in the British Grand Prix even if he continues to be part of the Haas team.

Mazepin’s father Dmitry provides financial backing to Haas and is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Haas are expected to sever links with their Russian driver.

Motorsport UK’s decision comes in the wake of the FIA, the international governing body, deciding ton allow Russians to compete in events but ban teams from the country.

Motorsport UK chair David Richards is thought to have voted against the FIA’s decision at Tuesday’s meeting of its World motorsport council.

A statement from Motorsport UK stated:

  • No Russian/Belarusian-licensed teams are approved to enter motorsport competitions in the UK
  • No Russian/Belarusian-licensed competitors and officials are approved to participate in UK motorsport events
  • No Russian/Belarusian national symbols, colours, flags (on uniform, equipment and car) to be displayed at Motorsport UK-permitted events

It added that the sanctions had been taken in consultation with the UK Government.

Richards said: “It is our duty to use whatever influence and leverage we might have to bring this wholly unjustified invasion of Ukraine to a halt.

“We would encourage the motorsport community and our colleagues around the world to fully embrace the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee and do whatever we can to end this war.

“Motorsport UK stands united with Leonid Kostyuchenko, president of the Automobile Federation of Ukraine, the Ukrainian motorsport community and the Ukrainian people and calls for the violence to end with a peaceful resolution.”

ASUU Would Get Proper Remuneration But it’ll Follow Due Process –Ngige

0

On the matter between ASUU and the Federal government, the Minister of Labor and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, on Tuesday in Abuja said that the Federal Government was committed to enhancing the remuneration package of university lecturers.

Ngige spoke to press at the Presidential Villa, Abuja after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on the status of FG’s current engagement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The minister said, the government was not opposed to proper remuneration of staff but there was due process. “Yes, our university lecturers deserve good pay. A worker deserves his wages. So, if we compare with what obtains in other climes and they are not adequately remunerated, there is nothing that stops the government within the lean resources we have to do some compensation raise and make them happy.

Ngige noted that a timeline had been given for the draft proposal the union submitted at the Ministry of Education for their conditions of service and wages to be concluded.

He said when the relevant committee headed by chair of pro-chancellors submits its report, it will be considered together with the National Salaries and Wages Commission to ensure that the proposed allowances do not exceed government’s extant fixtures.

According to him, Buhari was satisfied with his brief and the “2020 December agreement with ASUU is on course in terms of implementation.”

Meanwhile, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria on Tuesday knocked the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, for walking out of the discussion held with the representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students on the lingering strike by ASUU.

The union described the minister’s action as ridiculous just as it threatened to embark on a solidarity strike with ASUU if the impasse was not resolved in two weeks.

The union made its position known in a statement signed by its National President, Quadri Olaleye.

It read, “The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria under the leadership of Quadri Olaleye vehemently frowns at the level of condescending attitude exhibited by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, by walking out of the discussion held with the representatives of the NANS, while protesting the continued face-off between the government and members of ASUU, who have paralyzed.

Students With Poor Attendance Risk Withdrawal, Poly Rector Warns

0

The Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Dr Danjuma Baba, has warned newly matriculated students that any student who failed to record 75 per cent contact hour with lectures in a semester would be expelled from the school.

Baba disclosed this during the 35th matriculation of the institution held on Saturday at the convocation pavilion when over 2,500 students were admitted into both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes.

He stressed that over 2,000 candidates had been offered provisional admission to study various courses at the HND level.

Out of over 2,000 candidates that applied for the ND programme, only about 1,500 have been offered provisional admission while another over 1,000 candidates have been offered provisional admission to study various courses at the HND level.

“There shall be no absenteeism from lectures, tests and assignments. The minimum class attendance required of full-time students in a semester for each course is 75 per cent of the total contact hours for the semester.

“All academic departments shall keep an attendance register for this purpose. Only students who meet this requirement will graduate. Study the Student Handbook religiously as ignorance is no excuse in law,” the Rector warned.

He further added, “Recently we expelled a student for refusal to fill the misconduct form despite her claim of ignorance because it is clearly stated in the Student Handbook.”

“Let me warn at this point that the Polytechnic will not tolerate neither will it condone any act of indiscipline on the part of any student. You are to qualify for graduation only when you have been certified both in character and in learning.”

He disclosed that the present school administration had, more than any previous one, attracted more TETFund interventions in infrastructure, office furniture, equipment for laboratories and workshops. In addition, the Capital Projects funded by the Federal Government under this administration had been overwhelming and unprecedented.
