Nigeria’s Opeyori Claim Surprise Gold At All Africa Badminton Championships

0

Nigeria’s Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori secured unexpected title on Sunday at the All Africa Individual Badminton Championships in Kampala, Uganda.

It is Nigeria’s first major win since the crisis in the administration of badminton ensued late last year.

Opeyori was Nigeria’s sole entry as his doubles’ partner; Godwin Olofua failed to show up having travelled unexpectedly to Qatar.

Due to lack of funding, Nigeria was to present the three-man team that went for the Olympics comprising of Opeyori and Godwin Olofua in both the singles and doubles men’s event while Dorcas Adesokan had to be excused on account of preparation for her wedding.

That left only Opeyori as the sole competitor and was at the brink of not attending owing to the funding challenge. There is no executive board of the Badminton federation in the country at the moment and the leadership of a caretaker committee had to get Opeyori a flight ticket to attend the championship.

Not featuring in competitions had already taken its toll on the ranking of Nigerian players. Opeyori had to attend alone without any coach or support staff.

It was a gamble that paid off.  He avenged his loss in the 2020 final with a thrilling 21-14, 23-21 win over Brian Kasirye of Uganda.

It his second individual gold medal at the event after taking the 2019 title following a win against countryman Godwin Olofua in that final.

Opeyori had beaten 2017 champion Adel Hamek of Algeria in convincing fashion with a 21-18, 21-18 semi-final triumph in the men’s singles.

On his path to the semi final he beat home boy, Israel Wanagalya of Uganda 18-21, 21-10 and 21-11 to get a 2-1 win having come back from a set down.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has alerted Nigerians on the voluntary recall of a contaminated ointment named Clobetasol Propionate, warning the citizens against using it.

The product, a Clobetasol Propionate Ointment USP, 5%, 60g, was recalled due to microbial contamination, the agency said in a statement.

According to NAFDAC, the product manufactured by Taro Pharmaceuticals is being recalled due to microbial contamination that was reported during routine testing in the United States where it was manufactured.

The agency said they were notified by the US FDA of the recall of the product.

The statement by NAFDAC partly reads, “Clobetasol Propionate Ointment USP, 0.05% is indicated for the relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses.

“If contaminated with R. pickettii which is present in the natural environment (soil, water) for healthy individuals with intact skin, it is unlikely to cause any localised or systemic infections.

“However, for individuals who are immunocompromised, or whose skin is not intact (i.e. sunburn, psoriasis, abrasions), there is a reasonable possibility that systemic infections may occur if the product is contaminated with R. pickettii due to the presence of the corticosteroid component which enhances absorption of the ointment.

“If this bacterium is circulating in the human bloodstream it can cause life-threatening, invasive infections such as sepsis, pneumonia, meningitis, inflammation of the bone or bone marrow, and infection in the joint fluid and joint tissues.

“NAFDAC implores importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to stop the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the affected lot.

“Members of the public in possession of the recalled lots are implored to discontinue the sale or use and hand over the stock they have to the nearest NAFDAC office.

“NAFDAC encourages healthcare professionals, consumers, and patients to report adverse events related to the use of this product to the nearest NAFDAC office, or via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng or the NAFDAC ADR e-Reporting platform available at www.nafdac.gov.ng or med Safety App available for download on android and IOS stores.”

NAFDAC, however, added that “To date, Taro Pharmaceuticals Inc. has not received any reports of adverse events that have been related to this recall.”

Lagos State To Develop N49b Medical Park

0

The Lagos Government plans to develop a N49 billion Medical Park to attract medical tourists and make the state a medical hub.

Deputy governor Obafemi Hamzat stated this in Lagos at the launch of the Duchess Royal Medical Check-Up .

Duchess Royal Medical Check-Up is an exclusive three-day comprehensive total body health screening and wellness programme.’

The programme focuses on early detection of disease and providing comprehensive health check assessment.

The Deputy Governor said that the state government would continue to fund the health sector and provide quality health care for it’s citizenry.

“The health sector in our country has over the years struggled to ensure quality in the delivery of health care services.

“The effect of this, apparently, has led to the mistrust of the population in health service delivery in the country.

“This mistrust opened a whole new market for medical tourism, which is also called health tourism and basically refers to international travel for the purpose of receiving medical care,” he said.

Hamzat also stated that the National Association of Resident Doctors revealed that about N576 billion (1.2 billion dollars) was lost to medical tourism yearly in Nigeria.

The Deputy Governor also said in other to make Nigeria a medical tourism destination, both the public and private sector must work together to achieve it.

” The reality is that we must have a relationship with the private sector to know how to manage this things better so that people can get the best of medical services”.

On his own part, the Chairman, Department of Cardiology, Duchess/Tristate Institute, Prof. Kamar Adeleke, advised Nigerians to do regular medical check-ups.

Adeleke added that it was also important for everyone to “Know their Numbers”, including their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol level.

“I can tell you right now in Nigeria the number one cause of death is heart disease, number two is stroke and the third one is Cancer”.

“The World Health Organisation, said that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death estimated 32 per cent of global deaths.”

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to be watchful and conscious of food intake and eat healthy food.

Butt enhancement surgery can lead to death, surgeon warns

0

Lagos-based plastic surgeon, Dr. David Egbeogu, has warned that complications from butt enhancement can lead to death, particularly if conducted by a quack.

Dr. Egbeogu who spoke with Newsmen said the most common surgical procedure is the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), noting that it involves the injection of fat from other areas of the body in the butt.

“There are so many ways that the butt is enhanced but the one that has the greatest complications that have been seen is the butt injection.

There is this injection that people receive in their butt. The commonest is the one that is called the fat transfer. The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).

“The procedure is done in such a way that the place the fat is injected and the quantity of fat matter in the outcome. If it is injected in the proper place, the chances of having complications are low.”

The medical practitioner, however, said that the worst complication that can cause death is the injection of the fat into the bloodstream.

“The worst complication is what we call fat embolism. When the fat is injected into the bloodstream. This fat can travel to any part of the body. Fat should not be in the bloodstream.

“Death can occur when fat goes into the bloodstream.”

He also advised that those interested in the procedure should seek the service of plastic surgeons and not untrained people.

“That is not to say complications cannot occur with a certified plastic surgeon. What I’m saying is that the complications are less. The difference between someone who is trained and a quack is that the trained knows about the complications and how to handle them if they should occur,” he added.

On the need for regulation, Dr. Egbeogu said that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria exists to regulate the activities of medical practitioners.

“The truth of the matter is that regulation is necessary. It is not hidden that this is supposed to be a procedure to be performed by doctors or plastic surgeons.

“The body that should regulate the activities of medical practitioners exists. That’s the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria,” he said.

He also noted that it is not only in Nigeria that people of different specialties engage in handling the surgical procedure, noting that the quest for butt enhancement has increased in the past few years and some deaths have also been recorded.

Recall that in the past three years, three British women – Abimbola Ajoke Bamgbose, Leah Cambridge and Melissa Kerr – have died as a result of complications arising from BBLs in Turkey, the most popular destination for UK patients seeking cheaper aesthetic surgery.

Elsewhere, there have been many others: Joselyn Cano in Colombia, Gia Romualdo-Rodriguez, Heather Meadows, Ranika Hall and Danea Plasencia in Miami. According to local reports, in recent years, 15 women have died after BBLs in south Florida alone, Irish Times reported.

In Nigeria, a controversial cosmetic surgeon, Doctor Anuoluwapo Adepoju, who is famed for expertise in butt enhancement surgeries was arrested in 2020 and charged to court over allegations of failed cosmetic surgery that led to the death of one of her clients.

JAMB Registrar Supports ASUU On IPPIS, Proliferation of Universities

0

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has said the adoption of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS, as the payment platform for university workers is unsuitable for the university system.

Oloyede, while delivering a lecture at the 71st birthday ceremony of a former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Peter Okebukola which held via Zoom, said the necessary pressure must be put on the Federal Government to discard the payment platform.

“I am not a fan of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, but they have a point here. IPPIS is unsuitable for the university system. Let me cite an instance, when I was the VC at the University of Ilorin, I went to Australia on an official assignment and there I met a Nigerian with PhD in an area of Botany where we lacked the manpower.

“I spoke with the man and convinced him of the need to work with us and he agreed. Immediately, I put a call to the Dean of the Faculty of Science and told him about the development and that was how we secured the services of the man. He is now a professor in one of the nation’s universities.

“Also, we must be careful of the number of universities we are having, especially the ones being set up by government agencies and the military. We already have the Nigerian Defence Academy which trains officers for all the arms of the military. We also have the Police Academy that trains police officers, it can also help in training para-military men too.

“In that regards, we don’t need more than one or two. If care is not taken, we will soon have university of road safety or university of civil defence. Adequately funding existing universities should be our focus,’ he said.

ASUU that is currently on a four week strike is also complaining about IPPIS and the indiscriminate establishment of universities by federal and state governments among other issues.

Oloyede who also spoke on the issue of cut off marks for candidates seeking admission into higher institutions, said he had been asked in a number of international fora whether anybody whose score falls into that category would be automatically admitted.

He  further explained that in some situations, candidates might score high marks in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Education, UTME, and fail to do well in post-UTME exams and screening and vice versa.

He therefore suggested that cut off marks could be replaced with minimum acceptable score.

On some of the changes needed in the education sector, oloyede called for the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Higher Education Research and Innovation to take care of research institutes now under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

The National President of NANS, Sunday Asefon, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday.

Asefon said that the decision to block major federal roads was agreed upon at the association congress held in Sokoto recently.

He said congress resolved to mobilise students to block major federal roads across the 36 states and FCT on Feb. 28, if ASUU and the government failed to reach a compromise.

“Following the resolution of our congress held on Feb. 19, 2022, in Sokoto State University among, other matters discussed and considered, it was resolved we act decisively.

“I am pleased to direct an immediate commencement of planning and mass mobilization of Nigerian students and comrades across the 36 states of the federation and FCT in line with congress decision.

“The line of actions is as follows: blockage of all major federal roads in all the 36 states of the federation.

“This will be led and coordinated by NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) and Zonal Executives including National officials of NANS in the states,’’ he said.

Asefon said that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would be blocked by the National Secretariat in collaboration with the FCT axis of NANS.

He, therefore, declared Feb. 28, as a National Action Day against ASUU Incessant Strike Action tagged: #ENDASUUSTRIKEPERMANENTLYNOW.

“This becomes sacrosanct once ASUU and Federal Government fail to reach a compromise and get our campuses reopened on or before Feb. 28
