0

The President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Mr. Uyi Akpata, has said that one of the goals of his team when fully implemented will help in reducing the number out of school children and create employment opportunities for them.

Akpata made the statement at the on-going 3rd Pricewaterhouse Coopers National Under 17 Cricket Championship at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

“This event is part of the five-pronged strategic imperatives that the NCF is building its development on, which are; promotion of the game at all levels, upgrading infrastructures, building strategic partnerships, training and retraining of staffs and players and ensuring corporate governance,” Akpata said.

The NCF president said all the parts are interdependent and key to ensuring a healthy growth being targeted at ultimately making Nigeria one of the powerhouses of cricket in the short term.

“Our goal is to pull in over 250, 000 kids into the game this year and we have officers in all the 36 states fully equipped to get that going. This Under- 17 finals is a product of all the works these officers have been doing in the past 12 months.

“Recruitments and training at each zone were done, where over 784 players qualified to take part in the regional events across the six geo-political zones to have these ones battling the for the final spots,” he also said.

Akpata said aside cricket being actively played in Nigeria, the country now has six turf wickets, two of which the ongoing championship is being played on, and more are planned for other regions to help harmonize the standard of play in the country.

According to Akpata, the on-going championship will help handlers of the nationak U-19 team to have options of players to be invited when the camp eventually opens later in the year.

The 3rd PwC National Under-17 National Championship for boys and girls will be rounded off on Sunday in Abuja.

Tuberculosis: Organisation Calls For Interventions, Human Rights Protection

1

Ahead of International Day of Social Justice, United Nations hosted entity based in Geneva, Switzerland, Stop TB Partnership today has called on high burden countries for tuberculosis (TB) to invest in interventions that overcome the prevalent human rights barriers that currently diminish the effectiveness of national TB control efforts and ensure social justice equality for all.

This call comes as new evidence, published in a recent peer-reviewed publication, showing that stigma and discrimination against people affected by TB are the leading human rights barriers impeding access to TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment, care and support.

The Executive Director, Stop TB Partnership, Dr. Lucica Ditiu, stated that the review of recent Community, Rights and Gender assessment findings from 20 countries mean that this for the first time shows evidence needed that we must have a TB response centered on social justice and human rights.

The TB Community, Rights and Gender (CRG) assessment is a community-based participatory research tool that assesses and highlights the significance of human rights, law and gender in the TB response.

It aims to establish recommendations to overcome the barriers and challenges on the journey to accessing TB services and completing treatment.

To focus the TB response on communities, rights and gender, the Stop TB Partnership recently launched round 11 of its Challenge Facility for Civil Society (CFCS). With US$9 million available for grants, it is the largest round yet. Over the past 15 years, the CFCS has grown from $700,000 to $9 million in yearly funding to help TB-affected communities and civil society organizations promote and protect human rights and gender equality. Despite the steady increase in funding still, only a quarter of the funding needs are met.

Out of the 90 countries with either high burdens of TB, TB/HIV coinfection or multidrug/rifampicin-resistant TB, more than 30 have yet to conduct a CRG assessment. The Stop TB Partnership calls on all countries to complete such assessments and then develop and fund national Action Plans to mitigate, overcome and eliminate human rights and gender-related barriers to TB services, including stigma and discrimination.

In 2020, the Stop TB Partnership even recommended that completed such assessments and action plans be prerequisites for countries to obtain grants from donors like the Global Fund.

“Too often, people with TB are forgotten and neglected, and so are their rights,” added Ani Herna Sari, TB Survivor and Executive Director, Rekat Indonesia.

“Attention to TB and human rights, including stigma and discrimination, is essential. But beyond attention, we need elevated financial resources. Without a fully funded TB response, this airborne disease will continue to kill more than 4100 people every day and everyone should feel accountable for this.”

Morocco 2022: Super Falcons Spank Lady Elephants, Off To Abidjan On Sunday

0

Nine –time champions Nigeria put one leg into the 12th Women Africa Cup of Nations finals when beating their Ivorian counterparts 2-0 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Friday.

A brace by US –based forward Ifeoma Onumonu took the Falcons above the visitors in the two-match fixture, the winner of which will proceed to the finals in Morocco, at which Africa’s flagbearers at next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup will emerge.

Petite and impressive winger Koko Ange N’Guessan came close to opening the scores after only three minutes when she came face to face with Chiamaka Nnadozie from a flowing move, but the France –based Nigeria number one thwarted with her right leg.

The lanky Onumonu, winning her first cap for Nigeria, thought she had got the first goal 12 minutes into the game when she scooped past goalkeeper Cynthia Djohore after being set up by Rasheedat Ajibade, but Burkinabe referee Jacqueline Nikiema insisted she had blown for an infringement in favour of the Nigerian playmaker.

Nine minutes later, Onumonu, who plays for Gotham FC in New York, was again in the right place to finish in splendid manner after the ball rolled to her from a goalmouth melee.

N’Guessan, Estelle Nahi, Christine Yeble and Amenah Kacou struck some good tunes in the midfield and attack for the Elephants, but Captain Onome Ebi and the impressive Ashleigh Plumptre, also winning her first cap, foiled their onsluaghts.

In the second half, the Ivorians piled even more pressure on the Nigeria rear, making Plumptre to work extra hard at the left side of the rear, while Ebi and Osinachi Ohale kept things in check at the right side.

In the 56th minute, Onumonu, with a knack for being in the right place at the right time, caught on to a floating ball from Nicole Payne, and cleverly chipped onrushing Djohore for Nigeria’s second goal.

The Super Falcons contingent will fly out of Nigeria on Sunday morning for the reverse leg, scheduled for the Stade Robert Champroux in Abidjan on Wednesday, 23rd February.

Prince Harry’s Lawyers Say He Feels Unsafe Bringing Kids To UK

0

Lawyers for Prince Harry told a court hearing on Friday that the British royal is unwilling to bring his children to his homeland because it is not safe.

Harry has launched a legal challenge to the U.K. government’s refusal to let him personally pay for police protection when he comes to Britain.

His legal team says Harry wants to bring his children — Archie, who is almost 3, and 8-month-old Lilibet — to visit his home country from the United States but thinks it would be too risky without police protection.

Harry, who lives in Santa Barbara, California, with the children and his wife, Megan, did not attend Friday’s preliminary hearing. The court considered requests by both sides in the case for parts of some legal documents to be kept private.

Senior members of Britain’s royal family are given taxpayer-funded police protection, but Harry lost that when he and Meghan stepped down as working royals and moved to the United States in 2020. The couple said their decision was due to what they described as unbearable intrusions and racist attitudes of the British media.

Harry, also known as the Duke of Sussex, wants to be able to pay for the protection, saying his private security team in the U.S. doesn’t have adequate jurisdiction abroad or access to U.K. intelligence information.

During a hearing at the High Court in London, Harry’s lawyer, Shaheed Fatima, said the prince “does not feel safe when he is in the U.K. given the security arrangements applied to him.”

“It goes without saying that he does want to come back to see family and friends and to continue to support the charities that are so close to his heart,” she said. “Most of all, this is and always will be, his home.”

A lawyer representing the British government, Robert Palmer, called Harry’s claim “unarguable and unmeritorious.”

Palmer said in a written submission that Harry’s offer to pay for police security was irrelevant because “personal protective security by the police is not available on a privately financed basis.”

Trump NFT Collection To Laud His Own Presidency

0

More NFT digital collectibles are coming from former US first lady Melania Trump, and this time they will focus on “iconic” moments from her husband’s presidency.

Melania Trump launched an NFT sales platform last year, with an inaugural image of her own eyes, and now a collection is coming that lauds Donald Trump’s single term in office.

The 10,000-piece issue of “digital artwork highlights iconic moments from president Trump’s administration,” her office said in a statement, citing an example of Christmas at the White House.

“Collectors will enjoy an element of surprise as the artwork of each NFT is revealed only after purchase,” the statement added, noting Melania Trump provided “creative direction” for the collection.

The Republican billionaire’s NFTs, dubbed “POTUS TRUMP NFT Collection,” will be sold at a fixed price of $50 each via an extension of Melania Trump’s platform from Monday, a holiday honoring US presidents.

This is also the date on which Donald Trump’s new social network, “Truth Social,” is scheduled to officially go live.

The platform was presented by the former president as an alternative to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, from which he is barred.

This NFT platform was Melania Trump’s first public project since she left the White House over a year ago.

It uses the blockchain technology behind cryptocurrencies and transforms anything from illustrations to memes into virtual collectors’ items that cannot be duplicated.

Non-fungible tokens rocketed into the mainstream last year and are now traded at major auction houses, generating several hundred million dollars in transactions every month.

MDCN Inducts 341 Medical Doctors, 16 Dentists

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) on Tuesday inducted 341 medical doctors and 16 dentists.

The chairman of the council, Prof. Abba Hassan, while performing the ceremony, urged the inductees to operate in compliance with the ethics of the profession.

Hassan, who congratulated the inductees on their successful induction, urged them not to endanger lives.

He described the medical profession as a noble one designed to advance the existence of lives through quality and passionate service delivery.

“You must not endanger lives, this is not for money-making. “You will not be poor either but always display professionalism in the discharge of your duties,” he said.

Hassan urged them to always prioritize human safety before anything, warning that industrial action without due course was inimical to the tenets of the profession.

Earlier, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, described induction as a roadmap to improved healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

Ehanire, represented by Malam Mahmuda Mamman, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health expressed the preparedness of the ministry to improve the quality of health care delivery.

The Minister, who congratulated the inductees, said that the ministry would continue to advance the welfare of medical practitioners to greater heights.

250,000 Homes In South Britain Still Without Power Following Storm Eunice

0

Travel chaos caused by Storm Eunice is expected to continue throughout the day and a £500million clean-up is set to commence.

Around 250,000 people across Britain still remain without power as power lines were disrupted, and parts of England are expected to be hit by up to 8inches of snow this weekend.

At least four people have been killed in the UK and Ireland as record-breaking gales of 122mph howled through the country in one of the worst storms to have smashed the isles in decades.

The roof of The O2 in Greenwich, London was torn apart, while trees were uprooted, debris sent flying and shoppers were blown over. The spire of St Thomas Church in Wells, Somerset also came crashing to earth.

More than 430 flights were canceled or diverted and London City Airport was closed for most of the day. A video live-streaming an attempt by an aircraft to land at London’s Heathrow Airport during the storm, had about 5 million people watching.

Around a quarter of a million people still remain in darkness. As of last night, the number of households without power listed by providers was: 6,000 in Northern Power, 112,000 in Western Power, 260 in Electricity North West, 156,000 in UK Power Networks, and 120,000 in the Scottish & Southern networks.

The Met Office has now issued a yellow warning for heavy snow in Yorkshire and Lancashire, particularly those living in the Peak District. Some roads and railways will likely be affected by longer journey times, the national weather agency added.

Ethiopia To Start Generating Electricity From Nile Dam

0

Ethiopia will start generating electricity from its controversial dam on the river Nile on Sunday, government officials have said.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), set to be the largest hydroelectric project in Africa, has been at the centre of a regional dispute ever since Ethiopia broke ground in 2011.

“Tomorrow will be the first energy generation of the dam,” an Ethiopian government official said on Saturday.

A second official confirmed the information. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because the milestone has not been officially announced.

Egypt and Sudan view the dam as a threat because of their dependence on Nile waters, while Ethiopia deems it essential for its electrification and development.

Djokovic Faces Italian Teenager Musetti In Dubai Comeback

0

Novak Djokovic faces Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti in Dubai next week in a tough first round comeback following the drama surrounding his Australian Open deportation.

Djokvoic is able to play in the tournament as a coronavirus vaccine is not a requirement to enter the United Arab Emirates.

The world number one makes his return to the court on Monday after the coronavirus vaccine row that kept him from defending his Australian Open title.

Djokovic and wild card Musetti have history, with the 19-year-old taking the first two sets off the Serb when they met in last year’s French Open.

Musetti eventually retired due to injury with Djokovic leading the last 16 clash 6-7 (7/9), 6-7 (2/7), 6-1, 6-0, 4-0.

Djokovic went on to seal the title at Roland Garros for his 19th Grand Slam, with his 20th secured at Wimbledon the following month.

The 34-year-old has kept a low profile since his deportation from Australia last month over his refusal to get jabbed.

“I am excited to go back and play on Monday,” he told media in Dubai on Thursday.

“I miss tennis after all that has happened.”

Spanish rival Rafael Nadal won the Australian Open to become the first man to win 21 major titles, one ahead of Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Djokovic, who last hit a ball in anger in the Davis Cup in Madrid in December, is a five-time winner in Dubai.

The event also features Britain’s Andy Murray, who has three major titles to his name and who will start against a qualifier.

Second seed Andrey Rublev has a first round date with Britain’s Dan Evans, while Saturday’s draw pitted last year’s Dubai winner Aslan Karatsev against American Mackenzie McDonald.
