Ethiopia Lifts State Of Emergency Early, Citing Easing War

0

Lawmakers in Ethiopia have voted to end the country’s three-month state of emergency early even as mediation efforts to end a deadly war in the north continue in the country.

The decision took place after Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers, chaired by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, decided on Jan. 26 to end the state of emergency originally imposed for six months.

The state of emergency was imposed in early November as Tigray regional forces fighting Ethiopian and allied forces moved closer to the capital, Addis Ababa.

The Tigray fighters withdrew back into their region in late December amid mediation efforts and under pressure from a drone-supported military offensive carried out by the government.

Ahead of Tuesday’s vote, an advisory committee within the Ethiopian parliament said the lifting of the state of emergency would help revive the country’s economic and diplomatic situation. Parliament speaker Tagesse Chafo said the committee believes the country’s security threats can now be dealt with by regular law enforcement.

According to witnesses, lawyers and human rights groups, thousands of mainly ethnic Tigrayans were detained under the state of emergency, although many were released after December’s shift in the war.

There was no immediate word Tuesday on when the rest of the people detained under the state of emergency would be released. They include a freelance video journalist accredited to The Associated Press, Amir Aman Kiyaro.

The U.S. State Department urged for the move to be immediately followed by the release of all individuals arrested or detained without charge under the state of emergency, adding that the end of these detentions will facilitate an inclusive and productive national dialogue.”

ASUU Strike: UNIBEN Students Protest

0

A group of students of the University of Benin on Wednesday barricaded the ever-busy Benin-Ore-Sagamu road to protest the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ASUU declared a four-week warning strike on Monday, after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos, to compel the Federal Government to implement the renegotiated 2009 agreement it had with the government.

They were in their numbers by the entrance of the Ugbowo campus of the university chanting slogans and solidarity songs like “education is our right,” among others.

The students expressed their frustration over the incessant strike of university teachers, urged the federal government to heed to ASUU demands.

The protesting students carried placards with various inscriptions such as “5 years course has turned to 7 years; “FG settle ASUU” and “Enough is Enough.”

Some of them turned the highway into a football field, playing in sets while the student’s leaders were sharing bottles of water, soft drink, pies and doughnuts to the demonstrators for refreshment.

The students’ action caused a gridlock on the highway for about four hours, forcing many motorists to avoid the route while those going into the Edo capital had to divert their ways.

Consequently, passengers were also stranded as many walked a long distance before getting vehicles to their destinations.

Leading the protest, the President of the Students Union Government (SUG) in the institution, Foster Amadin, said they had been frustrated by the perennial strikes by the academic union.

Amadin, however, appealed to all concerned to see to the reason why they were at the gate protesting.

Migrants Sew Mouths Shut To Protest Ill Treatment By INM

0

A dozen migrants attempting to cross through Mexico into the United States are amping up their protests against Mexican authorities who refuse to let them through by sewing their lips shut.

A majority of migrants crossing through Mexico come from South and Central America, although many started their treks in the Caribbean or in farther away regions on other continents.

The Mexican government has significantly increased its capacity to process asylum applications, but at the same time, it has stepped up enforcement measures to stop migrants before they reach the U.S.-Mexico border

Mexican authorities condemned the protest, which they dismissed in a statement, blaming “those who call themselves [the migrants’] representatives” for inciting the lip-sewing action.

“The National Migration Institute (INM) of the Secretariat of the Interior reproaches violations against the physical and psychological integrity of migrant persons by exposing them to senseless actions, like the self-harm they inflicted today by sewing or stitching their lips,” read the statement.

According to reports, activists said the protest was meant to humanize the migrants in the eyes of INM. Activist Irineo Mujica said “The migrants are sewing their lips together as a sign of protest,” “We hope that the National Migration Institute can see that they are bleeding, that they are human beings

Okocha Urges Nigeria To Use Ghana Games To Correct Afcon Mistakes

0

Austin Okocha has urged the Super of Nigeria to use their games against Ghana to right their Africa Cup of Nations wrongs.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were most pundits’ favourites after their first group game win against Egypt, they went on to win all group games.

They were the only team at AFCON 2021 who won all group games but they shockingly fell to Tunisia in the Round of 16 to the surprise of all.

Okocha who was a pundit on Super Sports during the tournament said the team led Nigerians on with their performances but let the country down in the end.

The former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder expressed his confidence in the team and said with what he saw they can beat Ghana.

He, however, urged the team to use the games against Ghana to correct their mistakes.

“Ghana vs Nigeria match is never an easy one. It’s more about the rivalry, it is a pride match and a bragging right one,” Okocha was quoted as saying.

“For me, what is most important is to get the ticket. It does not matter how, even if we don’t play beautiful football, what’s important is getting the ticket to the World Cup in Qatar. It’s the result that matters.

“We have a very good team. We just don’t have to judge Super Eagles with the Tunisian match at the last AFCON in Cameroon. We have to review all the matches they played and take the positives and correct the negatives if there were any.

“For me, the signs are there that we have the team to take us to where we want to be in global football.

“I felt bad that the Eagles exited AFCON the way they did after winning all three games [against Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau] of the group stage.

“Eagles raised our hopes in expectation of a good run in the tournament, but unfortunately, things did not go the way we expected.

“However, I expect the team to learn from their outing in Cameroon and hopefully use the World Cup playoffs with Ghana to correct those mistakes.”

Nigeria and Ghana will face off for a place in Qatar, the first leg will be played inside the Cape Coast Stadium on Wednesday, 23rd March or Thursday, 24th March.

With the second leg billed for MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Sunday, 27th March.
