VP Osinbajo Seeks Effective Use of Digital Technology in Mass Education

0

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called for improved deployment of digital technology for mass education and healthcare.

Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, said the Vice President spoke at the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group Chairman’s Forum for 2022, held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

The Vice President said that Nigeria had experienced significant growth in the use of digital technology and in number of technology companies.

“Beyond all, of the successes that we are seeing, we need to educate a large number of people and train teachers.

“ That’s going to be a major issue in all of this especially in states where we have a large number of out-of-school children,” he said.

The Vice President said that providing more access to education and healthcare services to a larger number of the population had to be technology driven to ensure maximum impact.

He restated Nigeria’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2060.

The Vice President said that energy transition was important to Africa and developing countries.

He said that digitisation and climate change would largely determine Africa’s growth trajectory in decades ahead especially as digital technology offered the most effective way for Africa to fast-track development.

“And technology must play a role; technology must play an increasing part in our abilities to be able to reach our population everywhere they may be,” Osinbajo said.

On the growth of digital technology in Nigeria and on the continent, Osinbajo said that Africa’s total inbound international internet bandwidth capacity increased by more than 50 times.

“The operational fibre-optic network extended by almost four times; mobile telephony, mobile cellular subscriptions more than doubled; and about 58 per cent of the population now live in areas covered by 4G networks.

“Africa has over 480 million mobile money accounts, more than all other developing regions taken together, over 640 tech hubs are active across the continent.

“Here in Nigeria, we have six unicorns, most of them fintech companies, valued at over a billion dollars. We are also leveraging digital technology in various ways,” he said.

On climate change and its impact on Africa, Osinbajo reiterated the importance of placing premium consideration on African needs in the transition to net-zero emissions.

According to the Vice President, the issue goes beyond just climate change to the existential crisis of extreme poverty in Africa.

The event was hosted by the UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, and was attended by some members of the National Assembly, members of the diplomatic corps, among other dignitaries.

Lagos Records Another Collapsed Storey Building

0

A three-storey building located at the Akanbi Crescent, Yaba area of Lagos State, has collapsed.

This comes a few months after the collapse of a 21-storey building at Gerrard Road, Ikoyi area of the state.

It was gathered that a section of the building which is still under construction collapsed on another building beside it.

While the cause of the collapse and the number of casualties was unknown as at the time of filing this report, an eyewitness who spoke with the media said a part of the building had collapsed last year.

She disclosed that the construction went ahead despite the collapse as no authority from the Lagos State government weighed into the matter.

When contacted, Director-General (DG), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyitolu, told News Correspondent that the agency was working to rescue people who may be trapped in the rubble.

Olabisi Onabanjo University Sets up E-Transcript System

0

The Vice-Chancellor of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Prof Ganiyu Olatunde, has disclosed that the institution has revamped the Transcript Office with the setting up of the e-Transcript Request System.

The VC said, with this new system, university’s graduates could request their transcripts from anywhere in the world without passing through any agent or coming to Ago-Iwoye.

Olatunde stated this during the combined 30th and 31st convocation ceremonies for graduands of the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 sessions.

The outgoing VC used the occasion to highlight some of the landmark achievements recorded by the institution while in office and part of which centred on intervention on ICT.

He disclosed that OOU was the first university in the country to conduct a computer-based test (CBT) examination for admission of applicants without them having to be physically present on campus.

SWAN Lagos Challenges DSS Operatives Who Invade Their Secretariat

0

The Lagos chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has said officials of the Directorate of State Services, DSS, invaded its secretariat without obtaining court order or previous summon of officials of the association against standard practice.

Lagos SWAN, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Debo Oshundun, on Saturday, said the DSS operatives stormed its Secretariat in three Hilux vehicles at about 10 a.m. on Friday, with the sole aim of sealing the building.

“But shortly before sealing off the premises, the operatives ensured that a caretaker committee was inaugurated to take charge of the affairs of the association in place of a duly-elected Executive Members inaugurated by NUJ and led by Debo Oshundun still in office.

“After sealing off of the Lagos SWAN Secretariat inside the National Stadium, the DSS operatives moved to Teslim Balogun Stadium with a towing vehicle to remove the Lagos SWAN bus given to us by Lagos State Government.

“They claimed they were following the instructions of Honor Sirawoo, the factional President of SWAN, who is a current Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“Sirawoo instructed the DSS to bring the bus to Port Harcourt his base. The bus was donated by Lagos State governor to the state chapter of the association.

“It took intervention of the Chairman and the Director- General of the Lagos State Sports Commission to ensure that the bus was not taken away by the DSS officials acting on the instructions of a PS in Rivers State Government.

“On this note, we challenge the DSS to tell the world its role in the affairs of Lagos SWAN who in no way threatens the state security.

“We like to state clearly that there are no court injunctions or summons to the effect of sealing our cherished Secretariat. Such approach reminds one of Baboon Republic back in the days.

“We appeal to the Directorate of State Service to refrain from dabbling into SWAN affairs and to also discharge its activities without favour to any party.

“Sealing the Lagos SWAN Secretariat without recourse to court injunction or summon is ridiculous and it saddens our hearts that a government agency was acting without due process.

While condemning the invasion of the association’s state secretariat by personnel of DSS, the association craved for timely intervention of appropriate authorities to step into the matter before it further degenerates.

“However, we told our members to remain calm and go about their business in the face of the humiliation.

“We are appealing to the NUJ, NGE and other media bodies for timely intervention in order to ensure that the situation does not further degenerate,” the statement read.

Nigerian Government Faults IMF On Nation’s Debt Servicing Analysis

0

The Debt Management Office (DMO) Nigeria has faulted the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over its position on the nation’s debt servicing obligations.

The Fund said in its 2021 Article IV, that the Nigerian Government could spend as much as 92.6 per cent of its revenue on debt servicing this year.

That position was first aired by Agusto and Co. rating agency. However, the DMO, in a statement on Friday, said that although Nigeria’s debt and debt service levels may have grown over the years, the reports of the two bodies failed to take into consideration the last two recessions in the country, due to low revenue.

It queried the analysis that failed to recognize the improvements in infrastructure, achieved through borrowing.

The Office clarified that the federal government was already implementing policies towards increasing revenues and developing infrastructure through Public Private Partnership arrangements,.

It said that the nation’s debt remained sustainable as revenue efforts were already yielding fruits.

NIN Verification Service (NVS) Now Restored

1

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced the restoration of its portal, which went down last week due to maintenance by one of the Commission’s network service providers.

This was disclosed in a statement released on Saturday and signed by NIMC Head, Corporate Communications,  Kayode Adegoke in Abuja.

Adegoke said the Commission’s Customers and Service providers can now take full advantage of the two verification platforms – Tokenization and NVS – which are both effective for verification and authentication of the National Identification Number.

He further expressed gratitude to the general public and partners for their support during the NVS downtime and use of the tokenization platform and assumed that the Commission will continue to come up with innovative identity management solutions to enhance its capacity to deliver on its mandate.

Recall that the National Identification Number (NIN) Verification Service (NVS) portal broke down last week due to maintenance by one of the service providers of its infrastructure.

The incident led to disruption of services by banks, telecom service providers, Police, Immigration and FRSC among others.

Permanent Voter’s Card Does Not Expire- INEC

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, has explained that contrary to most misconception, the Permanent Voter’s Card, PVC, does not expire.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in charge of Abia State, Joseph Iloh, made the clarification while sensitising students at the 10th Matriculation ceremony of the Gregory University Uturu.

Iloh said “PVC is as valid as the voter is alive”. He further urged students of the university who were eligible for voting to arm themselves with PVC ahead of the 2023 general polls.

INEC also advocated active participation of the university community in the electoral process since the electoral umpire usually recruits its ad-hoc staff from the university environment.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Augustine Uwakwe, in her earlier remarks, asked the 484 matriculants to focus on academic excellence and shun all forms of distractions associated with campus life.

The VC who said the university had zero tolerance for cultism, drug abuse and internet fraud, charged the students to eschew all forms of vices as anyone caught indulging in such abnormality will be decisively dealt with.

The VC who said the university was poised to break global records in many fields urged the students to take advantage of the entrepreneurial Centre in the Institution to acquire vocational skills for self reliance in addition to their certificate.

He said that the Institution had world-class facilities including library and laboratories with modern facilities comparable with those in any standard university in the world.

In a remark, Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu, described Gregory university as the fasted-growing university in the South East region, saying he is proud that the founder is an Abian who had shown capacity in many fields.

Ikpeazu who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Professor Anthony Agbazuere, urged the students to select their goal in life and pursue same with undivided single mindedness.

The governor who commended the university management for its special attention to entrepreneurial studies urged the staff to complement the efforts of the Chancellor by putting in their best despite the challenges of working in the private sector.

EU Begins Investigation As Thousands Of Women Report Menstrual Disorders After mRNA Covid Shots

0

Europe’s medicines watchdog today announced it will be probing reports of thousands of women suffering drastic menstrual changes after getting Covid vaccines made by Pfizer or Moderna.

The European Medicines Agency’s drug safety committee is investigating both cases of heavy bleeding and missed periods following vaccination.

It promises to look through all the reported incidents in the EU and clinical trial data, as well as review the scientific literature.

The EMA’s panel previously investigated the connection between irregular periods and Covid vaccines but could not establish a firm link. It is reopening the case after receiving ‘spontaneous reports of menstrual disorders’ more recently.

Women around the world have reported an irregular period after getting the mRNA vaccines, with some studies suggesting the issue affects four in 10 women.

While the EU remains hesitant to probe the effect of the vaccines on fertility, many women remain concerned that the vaccines will sabotage their ability to bare children or bare healthy children and this has driven hesitancy among women.

More than 50,000 reports of period changes, including late periods, have been logged in the UK alone, triggering a review by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The assessment is being carried out by the EMA’s Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC), which oversees the safety of medicines.

It will review all available evidence on mRNA vaccines and period changes among women, including reports from vaccinated women, clinical trials and studies.

They will be looking into whether the jabs triggered heavy periods — bleeding that affect a person’s quality of life — or temporarily stopped periods — medically known as amenorrhea, when a woman does not have a period for three months or more.

The UK’s MHRA is already investigating reports of period problems, as well as unexpected vaginal bleeding, post-vaccination.

Two MHRA sub-committees — the Vaccines Benefit Risk Expert Working Group and the Medicines for Women’s Health Expert Advisory Group — are also investigating the evidence around the claims.

A study of more than 4,000 women in the US found periods lasted 15 hours longer in women who had a first dose and 19 hours longer among double-jabbed.

The length of the menstrual cycle varies between individual women, but the average is every 28 days.

However, cycles as short as 21 days or as long as 40 are not considered unusual.

The NHS advises women to contact their GP if their periods are irregular in certain situations.

These include: if their periods suddenly become irregular and they are under 45-years-of-age, their periods come more often than every 21 days and less often than every 35 days, their period lasts longer than seven days, and there is a difference of at least 20 days between the shortest and longest menstrual cycle.

Irregular periods can also lead to problems when women are trying to get pregnant as it becomes difficult to accurately track ovulation, the time when they are most likely to conceive.

A Nigerian nurse based in the United States, Faduri Joseph, has declared his desire to run for presidency come 2023. He vowed to end insecurity and the face-off between ASUU and the federal government when elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, come 2023.

He said, “When elected as the President of this country, I will put an end to insecurity in all parts of the country and stop the incessant killings of human beings because life is precious.

“Most importantly, I will end the lingering face-off between Academic Staff Union of Universities and government which had resulted in unending strikes. We will ensure that our children finished their studies when due.”

He made this statement while lamenting how he spent five years after graduation from Nigerian University without employment before he left for the US, and ventured into music and acting

“My government will address the matter squarely as well as tackle the unemployment matter that has crumbled the nation’s economy.”

The 45-year-old presidential aspirant made the promises through his Delta State coordinator, Tessy Ebegbune, during a familiarization visit to the university community, Abraka, in Ethiop East Local Government Area of Delta State.

In his remark, the President of the Student Union Government, Delta State University, Comrade Cyprian Odifili, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, to give Nigerians the best in the forthcoming general elections.

Odifili stated that Nigerian students will not hesitate to reject any political aspirant/candidate who cannot protect the interest of Nigerian students.

The students urged INEC to encourage independent candidacy, saying Nigerians are fed up with political parties, but still hopeful that sooner or later, the Moses of our time will emerge, to lead Nigerians to the expected Promised Land.
