Everton Shock Man United1- 0 To Boost Survival Chances

0

verton secured what could prove a priceless victory in their battle to avoid relegation as lacklustre Manchester United were beaten at Goodison Park.

Frank Lampard’s side were plunged into even deeper crisis when they lost at fellow strugglers Burnley in midweek to leave them facing the prospect of dropping into the bottom three this weekend if results went against them.

In a game low on quality but high in tension, Everton’s victory came courtesy of Anthony Gordon’s 27th-minute drive, which took a heavy deflection off United captain Harry Maguire to leave keeper David de Gea wrong-footed.

Everton keeper Jordan Pickford made two important early saves from Marcus Rashford and a vital late block from Cristiano Ronaldo, but there was rarely any sense of siege as United lacked urgency, failing to break through in another blow to their hopes of making the Premier League’s top four.

This could be a huge result in Everton’s season, stopping the rot and lifting some of those dark clouds that were starting to gather over Goodison.

Everton’s win was as far from a classic as it is possible to be but in the wider context it could mean more than so many others this season.

Frank Lampard’s side remain in trouble but the psychological lift provided by this victory, which removes the prospect of dropping into the bottom three for now at least, saw an explosion of joy around this famous old stadium when referee Jon Moss blew the final whistle.

Everton dug deep for victory and had several figures who personified exactly what they will need if they are to maintain their Premier League status.

Everton have won five and lost eight in all competitions under Frank Lampard, with all five wins at Goodison
Everton have won five and lost eight in all competitions under Frank Lampard, with all five wins at Goodison Park

It was fitting that Gordon was the match-winner, the local hero loved by Everton fans for his tireless energy and invention. The supporters warm to him because of his attitude and his deflected strike was a fitting reward.

Richarlison is another who has been exempt from criticism, apart from the fact he might have scored more goals. The Brazil striker’s work-rate is exceptional, chasing down every lost cause and he brought Goodison Park to its feet in the second half when he juggled the ball on his head by the touchline before winning a corner. He reacted by pumping his fists at the Gwladys Street End to raise the temperature inside an already frantic stadium.

And, once more, goalkeeper Pickford made a vital contribution, denying Rashford twice early on as well as Paul Pogba and Ronaldo after the break.

The deafening noise at the final whistle told the story, as Lampard joined in celebrations with the fans at the conclusion of a win that cannot be over-valued.

Embarrassing display by Red Devils

Difficult to finish in top four, says Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick

Manchester United were still chasing a place in the top four and a slot in next season’s Champions League at kick-off. They played as if no-one had told them.

United’s display was embarrassingly mediocre, a gift for an Everton side looking anywhere for assistance to ease their own troubles.

It seems certain Ajax coach Erik ten Hag will be United’s next maneger and if he was watching this he will have a notebook full of uncomplimentary references and names crossed out of his plans.

Everton were nervous and tense but were ultimately placed under no serious pressure by a United side strolling around without the slightest sense of urgency, without any sense they still had something to fight for this season.

The passing was sloppy, so many physical challenges were lost. It was a flat performance that suggests these players have given up on getting any inspiration from interim manager Ralf Rangnick – and he could be forgiven for giving up on them, so abject was this performance.

It was only in the final minutes that Everton showed any serious signs of panic in defence, and the biggest condemnation of United is that Lampard’s struggling side were themselves average but still deserved the win because they were prepared to fight to earn it.

Ronaldo’s late yellow card for kicking the ball away could also be marked down as a rare act of aggression rather than the petulance it was, such was the timid, desperate nature of their performance.

If, as is expected, Ten Hag is the next United manager, what a task he is taking on.

SpaceX’s 3 Visitors To Spend A Week At Space Station In First Private Charter Flight

SpaceX launched three rich businessmen and their astronaut escort to the International Space Station on Friday for more than a week’s stay, as NASA joins Russia in hosting guests at the world’s most expensive tourist destination.

It’s SpaceX’s first private charter flight to the orbiting lab after two years of carrying astronauts there for NASA.

Arriving at the space station Saturday are an American, a Canadian and an Israeli who run investment, real estate and other companies.

They’re paying $55 million apiece for the rocket ride and accommodations, all meals included.

Russia has been hosting tourists at the space station — and before that the Mir station — for decades. Just last fall, a Russian movie crew flew up, followed by a Japanese fashion tycoon and his assistant.

Exploring Mount Mumba Strict Nature Reserve, Côte d’Ivoire, Rich In Iron Ore Deposits

0

Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is an important natural reserve which is endangered since 1992, and as it is part of the Nimba Mountain Range it stretches over the territories of both, the Republic of Guinea and the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire.

The mountain range is part as well of Liberia, however, the nature reserve does not include.

Established as a strict nature reserve at first in 1943 in Côte d’Ivoire by Order No. 4190 SE/F, it later was recognized as a special site of natural interest, and by a decree in 1944 it became protected in Guinea as well.

Stretching over an area of about 17,540 hectares (43,342 acres), where the bigger part belongs to Guinea, it contains also the highest point in both countries, Mount Richard-Molard with 1,7852 meters (5,750 feet) high above the sea.

The slopes are covered by dense forest which includes rainforest too, together with the grassy mountain pastures, plains of savanna, and at the high altitude there is only grassland.

Harboring an especially rich flora and fauna, with endemic species such as the viviparous toad, duikers, big cats and civets, there can be found as well chimpanzees that interestingly use stones as tools.

Having the role of a crucial water catchment area, giving life to some of West Africa’s essential rivers, and in turn to its people and wildlife, throughout its history and due to the isolation, a remarkable evolutionary processes can be seen where the entire nature of savanna, dense forests, and woodlands exist near each other and together support the biodiverse flora and fauna.

Since the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is of great importance to the region, it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage List since 1981.

Nevertheless, apart from being rich in biodiversity, the reserve is also blessed with iron ore deposits which are regarded to be of high quality, and industrial interests slowly are taking over the conservation effort and not allowing for the nature to “repair” itself from the previous mining activities.

Together with the agriculture encroachment and poaching and hunting for bush meat, it seems that the nature reserve will continue to have difficult times in order to restore itself to the previous condition where the preservation is only supported by donations, as administrative governmental funds are almost nonexistent.

That is why there are scientists who are slowly bringing the importance that Mount Nimba has, as it can be the place where major discoveries can be found, such as the Nimba toad which has the ability to give birth to live young ones due to the dry conditions of its habitat.

A magnificent African treasure that is given to the world only with hope that we would appreciate it more and bring bigger attention so that the future scientists would have better chances of researching it.

Unregistered SIM Card Users In  Kenya Face Switch-Off By April 15

0

The Communications Authority (CA) of Kenya has warned mobile phone subscribers who fail to register their details with their respective telecommunication service providers by April 15 will face disconnection.

Director General Ezra Chiloba stated that the move is to enforce the SIM card registration regulations of 2015 and is aimed at combating cybercrime and fraud in the digital space.

Chiloba said the Communication Authority will not extend the ongoing SIM card registration deadline and urged unregistered mobile subscribers to do so in the remaining days.

He asked all mobile network operators to speed up the data cleanup exercise and said that no more time will be added upon the expiry of the grace period noting that unregistered sim cards have security implications.

“There would be no extension so those still dragging their feet should wake up to the reality and register with their respective telecom service providers or face permanent deactivation,” he said.

The CA DG said there would be no unregistered SIM cards on any of the telcom service providers that would be in operation beyond April 15.

“We want before the end of April all the networks to be cleaned up by deactivating all unregistered and improperly registered SIM cards from the networks,” said Chiloba.

He said Kenya will join other countries in the world that have developed similar policies and collected biometric data through a registration process by telecom companies in a bid to boost cybersecurity.

Chiloba spoke to the media at Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort and Spa in Mombasa while attending this year’s annual Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) Kenya chapter conference.

ISACA is an international nonprofit professional association focused on information technology governance and engages in the development, adoption and use of globally accepted information systems.

The three days ISACA Kenya chapter annual conference has kicked off in Mombasa organized with the theme ‘Renew and re-imagine, tech, innovation and resilience’.

Chiloba said the mandatory registration comes in the wake of growing incidents of fraud involving mobile phones in the country.

He asked parents not to register their credentials in the SIM cards their children who are above the age of 18 operate.

“This will be an upgrade of the current model in which parents use their credentials to register SIM cards their children operate,” he added.

He said previously data systems in the country remained non-digitised due to poor information and communication infrastructure which is no longer the case at the moment when the digital divide is narrowing.

“It means that criminals and even terrorists can use unregistered SIM cards for anonymity and avoiding detection by the authorities,” he said adding that the registration will help in facilitating crime tracking and prevention by the security agencies.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has had eight of the 15 count charge filed against him, struck out by The Federal High Court in Abuja.

The 15 charges which bordered on terrorism were filed against Kanu by the Federal Government.

When the case resumed on Friday at the court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Binta Nyako struck out eight of the charges while delivering a ruling on the validity of the charges.

She held that in the instant preliminary objection application, counts six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, and 14 have not disclosed any offense by the defendant.

The judge, however, acknowledged that counts one, two, three, four, five, 13, and 15 showed some allegations against the IPOB leader, saying the trial of the defendant would proceed on those counts.

According to her, rendition for the purpose of criminal investigation is allowed and in the instant case, there is a bench warrant on the defendant, suffice to say he is a fugitive before the court.

Ruling on the issue of the proscription of IPOB, the judge held that the case was pending before the appeal court and as such, the order proscribing the organization was subsisting until it was vacated.

We are the industrial capital of this country and neighbor to the biggest economy which is Lagos State. We see the cross-border migration every day and the trouble our people go through.

“Our transportation master plan has proffered suggestions and solutions for us to deal with this. Today, we are launching these mass transit buses. The pilot phase will start from Abeokuta and we will expand it to other cities,” the governor noted.

Nigeria Lost $5.5M To Oil Theft in Bonny Terminal Since 2021- NNPC

0

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Mele Kyari, has corroborated the claim by the Chairman of the United Bank of Africa, Tony Elumelu, that Nigeria is losing 95 per cent of oil production to thieves at Bonny Terminal, Rivers State.

The Chairman of the United Bank of Africa, Tony Elumelu, recently had in a Twitter thread on March 17, said Nigeria was losing 95 per cent of production at the Bonny terminal to vandals making Shell declare force majeure production activities on that field.

“Look at Bonny Terminal that should be receiving 200k barrels per day, instead it received less than 3,000 barrels, leading the operator @shell to declare force majeure,” Elumelu tweeted.

Elumelu’s claim was confirmed on Thursday by Kyari while appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Upstream).

The GMD told the panel that Nigeria can only get 3,000 barrels out of 239,000 barrels injected into the pipeline from Bonny Terminal.

He further disclosed that the country lost $4 billion to theft at the rate of 200,000 barrels per day in 2021. He added that the country already lost $1.5 billion so far in 2022 because the vandalism has escalated.

“Indeed what is happening is massive acts of vandals and thieves on our pipelines that have first made us lose our volume. Secondly, it forced us to shut down production. The difference between the current production of 1.49 million and our potential that we can easily do -close to 1.8 million or so–at an independent level is not necessarily stolen and they are not within the reach of ordinary vandals. What has been in massive difficulty is the production from the independents and the JV. Unfortunately, except for the ExxonMobil production, most of our JV is onshore. This is where we have the challenge,” he said.

He said the rate of vandalism has forced the NNPC and their Joint Venture partners to shut down two production fields. He stressed that the NNPC had to abandon the lines because removing the breach will not deter the oil vandals from stopping.

He said the situation has become “desperate.”

Speaking on the solution, Kyari said the stealing is beyond ordinary “vandals” because the sophistication required is beyond small-time vandals.

In his PowerPoint presentation, Kyari showed the committee the environmental impact of the activities of the vandals.

He harped on the environmental impact of the activities of vandals, noting that the impact will be felt for generations to come.

He commended the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, for the actions taken to check illegal refineries.

He asked the committee to give the government two months to implement some of the security measures developed to tackle the activities of vandals in the Niger Delta.

South African Reserve Bank Takes A Step Closer To National Digital Currency

0

The South African Reserve Bank, in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Fintech Working Group, this week released a second report looking at the use of distributed ledger technology for interbank payments settlement, taking it one step closer to a national cryptocurrency.

Project Khokha 2 was launched just over a year ago, in February 2021, and the participating financial institutions were Absa, FirstRand, Nedbank, Standard Bank and the JSE.

While global financial systems have steadily progressed over the last 50 years, moving from physical ledgers to digital ledgers, the next step is tokenisation – where different traditional assets such as money and securities are represented as tokens on distributed ledger technology (DLT) platforms. One of the most popular applications associated with DLT platforms is blockchain technology, which houses cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and ethereum.

“Several central banks are exploring the viability of tokenised central bank money in financial markets. Such exploration is important given the growth in technological innovation and the use of new forms of payment instructions,” says Lesetja Kganyago, the governor of the SA Reserve Bank (Sarb).

Project Khoka 2 saw the creation of two forms of tokenised money to allow for settlement. The first was a tokenised form.

Minister Inaugurates Committee On Effective Management Of Trade Matters

0

The Nigerian Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo has inaugurated the reconstituted Enlarged National Focal Point (ENPF) with the mandate to serve as a forum for systematic consultation, and collaboration among relevant Government Ministries, Agencies and the Private Sector, for effective management of trade matters.

During the inauguration of the ENPF chaired by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Evelyn Ngige, he explained that the objective of the ENPF is to serve as the platform to promote Nigeria’s interests in all trade negotiations through the proper articulation and harmonisation of the country’s negotiation positions.

According to him, “The increase in the number and complexity of trade and trade-related issues in the 21st Century, including the associated sectoral interlinkages, has challenged the ability of both developed and developing countries to manage, negotiate, and implement trade agreements.”

“Indeed, trade policy in today’s world goes well beyond the traditional focus on border measures such as tariffs, trade taxes and charges, export subsidies, customs and transit regimes, quantitative restrictions, and quotas”.

“While the search for new disciplines and commitments is ongoing in many different areas, rules on trade in agriculture, services, investment, intellectual property and product standards have all led to various systemic changes and challenges, since the establishment of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 1995,” the Minister said.

He explained that the ENPF which drew its members from ministries and agencies of government, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, labour

Unions, Nigerian Economic Summit Group amongst others, was necessitated by the enlarged scope of national trade policy agenda.

The minister called on all members of the ENFP to work together, with a view to ensuring that trade, investment and technology policies serve as the core enablers of growth and the sustainable development of the Nigerian economy.

NITDA Trains Public Officers on Service Level Agreements

0

Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency NITDA is training government public officers on the need to draft an effective Service Level Agreements SLAs, to cub wastage in government and losing litigation cases to service providers.

The Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa disclosed this at a one-day workshop in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The training will also empower government personnel on the importance of government drafting SLAs for service providers and to ensure that service providers do not dump Master Level Agreements MLAs on the government.

Inuwa was represented by  the acting Director Cooperate Planning and Strategy, Aristotle Onuma, said that “we are here to understand and agree on how to draft standard SLAs in order to ensure provision of adequate warranty, after sales service agreements on our IT products and services and adequate provisions for downtime, and after sales support. This workshop seeks to practically elaborate on how to draft SLAs in government contracts for IT products and services. This we believe will help achieve our goal of developing the culture of the use and compliance to SLA in government IT contracts.”

He said as a regulator the agency is always seeking to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of IT products and services.
