Some progress in Ethiopia diplomacy – Tigray leader

0

The leader of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in Ethiopia, which has been at war with government forces for over a year, says shuttle diplomacy has led to some progress.

In a rare interview Debretsion Gebremichael told correspondents that indirect talks with the government had been taking place.

The war has led to the displacement of millions of people and the UN says nearly 40% of people in Tigray are suffering from an extreme lack of food.

Mr Debretsion suggested that the shuttle diplomacy was having an impact and said there had been signs of improvement after indirect talks with the Ethiopian government.

The TPLF chairman told the BBC he wanted a peaceful resolution but added that if necessary they would fight on to protect the rights of the Tigrayans.

Jail order for corrupt Liberian ex-defense minister

0

The Supreme Court of Liberia has ordered that a former defence minister be jailed for two years in connection with a corruption case.

Brownie Samukai and two colleagues were found guilty two years ago of theft and money laundering in a case involving more than $1m (£748,000).

They were given a two-year suspended sentence at the time and ordered to pay back half of the money within six months.

The jail term has now been imposed as they failed to make the payments within the stipulated time.

A judge said the trio must now pay back all the money – and would remain in jail after the two years if they have failed to do so in that time.

They had organised for money to be routinely deducted from soldiers’ salaries and placed into a private, not public, account, as part of a pension scheme, according to court records.

Ex-Ugandan ethics minister Lokodo dies at 64
Ugandan politician Simon Lokodo, who was best-known outside the country for his promotion of anti-homosexuality measures, has died in a hospital in Switzerland at the age of 64.

The one-time Catholic priest served as the country’s ethics and integrity minister for a decade until June last year.

His backing of a bill that advocated the death penalty for people in same-sex relationships angered pro-LGBT rights campaigners both inside and outside the country.

The measure never made it to law.

In 2015, he was condemned after calling for police to raid guesthouses used for “lunchtime sex” – a euphemism for people engaging in extramarital affairs.

A social media campaign began when he appeared to suggest in 2013 that mini-skirts should be banned.

Lagos Begins Removal Of Shanties Along Lekki Coastal Road

0

Lagos State Government has embarked on the removal of all shanties along the Lekki Coastal road axis in a bid to further protect the Coastal Road alignment.

The General Manager, New Towns Development Authority (NTDA), Tpl. Olakunle Aboyeji, who led the exercise, stated that the squatters and miscreants who had illegally converted the Lekki Coastal Road, Lekki Penisula Scheme I, Maroko beach extension and the adjoining roads to their abode and commercial centre, posed a huge security risk to residents of the area and the adjoining communities.

He recalled that each time the stretch of land along the axis was cleared, the dislodged illegal squatters and miscreants, who occupied the roadside and constitute nuisance in the axis, would come back to rebuild their shanties because the construction of the coastal road was yet to commence.

Aboyeji pointed out that the government allowed temporary occupants, who put the land to good use, instead of squatters building shanties and embarking on illegal activities along the coastal road.

The General Manager dismissed allegations that the land along the coastal line has been sold with approval given to people to build permanent structures, maintaining that the position of the State Government had earlier been echoed by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy.

His words: “The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, had earlier stated that anytime the government needs to continue work on the Coastal Road, the work will continue.

Nobody has any permission to build something that is permanent here”.

Aboyeji averred that the sanity and security of the environment were paramount to the State Government and that the Authority will continue to dismantle all illegal structures along the Coastal Road to rid it of squatters and miscreants pending the time the road construction will begin.

Despite Oil nearing $100 Nigeria still suffers from wasteful spending

0

With prices trading near a seven-year high as crude makes a roaring start to 2022, the finances of Africa’s most populous nation remain precariously challenged by corruption and bad management.

Nigeria’s opaque oil industry is hobbled by inept policies which meant the flight of badly needed investment resulting in the failure to produce more oil to take advantage of soaring oil prices.

The country’s president also doubles as petroleum minister but a lack of clear understanding of changing global energy dynamics and a damaging fuel subsidy regime has left Nigeria’s oil output below her OPEC quota.

“Nigeria is like a man who is dying from dehydration despite being in the midst of a ferocious rainfall,” says economist Festus Ogbobine.

Brent hovered near $92 a barrel while West Texas Intermediate rose 2% for the week as robust demand tightened global markets. As supply remains constrained, a chorus of Wall Street banks and oil executives are forecasting a return to $100 oil.

Additionally, heightened geopolitical risks driven by fears that Russia may invade Ukraine have also contributed to crude’s climb.

State of security at Lagos international airport becoming a national embarrassment

0

Security breaches at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos are really not new. But with insiders beginning to threaten its safety and security, and daylight robbery now a new normal on the restricted airside, stakeholders have called for the overhauling of the security architecture at the airport.

Two incidences stuck out like sore thumbs at the airport in the last couple of days — a fracas between men of the Nigerian Customs Service (NSC) and security operatives of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and then, a bizarre burglary incident inside Arik Air Boeing 737 aircraft.

The two, though not directly connected, underscore the security threats facing the flagship aerodrome and challenges of putting up an effective resistance.

Apparently worried by the parallel pattern of things at the popular gateway, aviation stakeholders regretted attendant exposure to international embarrassment, especially in a year the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) would be auditing Nigeria’s safety records and standards.
