Grand Prismatic Spring – Third Largest Hot Spring In The World

0

Located in one of the most popular national parks in America, Grand Prismatic Spring is the third-largest hot spring in the world.

Besides its size, it reflects the entire rainbow spectrum just like a prism. Its blue center spreads into a red ring around the edge.

The color shift is due to heat-loving microbes in the water.

What Makes The Grand Prismatic So Grand?

Deeper Than A 10-Story Building

Extremely hot water travels 121 feet from a crack in the Earth to reach the surface of the spring.

Football Field On Steroids

The third-largest spring in the world, the Grand Prismatic is bigger than a football field at 370 feet in diameter. A gridiron is 360 feet long and 160 feet wide.

Rainbow Of Colors

The hot spring has bright bands of orange, yellow, and green ring the deep blue waters in the spring. The multicolored layers get their hues from different species of thermophile (heat-loving) bacteria living in the progressively cooler water around the spring. And the deep blue center? That’s because water scatters the blue wavelengths of light more than others, reflecting blues back to our eyes.

A Living Thermometer

What living thing in Yellowstone has helped investigators solve crimes and NASA search for extraterrestrial life on seemingly inhospitable planets? Heat-loving microbes living in the Yellowstone’s thermal pools. In 1968, researcher Thomas Brock discovered a microbe living in one of Yellowstone’s extremely hot springs. In the years since, research on Yellowstone’s microbes has led to major medical and scientific advances, including the sequencing of the entire human genome.

FG Signs Tripartite Agreement With Two States On Electricity Supply

0

Poised to improve electricity supply to rural and urban settlements, the Federal Government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sokoto and Bauchi state governments for solar and mini grid power systems.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Nebeolisa Anako, at the signing ceremony, affirmed the commitment to provide reliable power supply to unserved and underserved communities in rural and semi urban areas of Nigeria.

Anako, who represented the Minister for Power, Engr. Abubakar Aliyu, said with the agreement signing between the Sokoto and Bauchi state governments, the Federal Government will assist to make sure the programme comes to reality.

He added that the FG plans to install five million Solar Home Systems (SHS) and Mini-Grid by which 250,000 jobs would be generated to impact over 25 million beneficiaries across the states.

Responding, the Commissioner of State Ministry of Energy, Sokoto State, Aliyu Balarabe, expressed his gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Power for signing of the MoU, saying, “Sokoto and Bauchi States would be the first to sign this tripartite MoU.”

Also, the Commissioner of State, Power, Bauchi State, Maryam Garba said that the ministry has taken advantage to key into the Federal Government’s plan to provide electricity to unserved and underserved communities in the state.

Customs Unveils 18 Patrol Boats To Curb Smuggling

0

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), has launched 18 patrol boats to curb the activities of smugglers who use the streams and waterways as a safe haven for their illegal trade.

Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali, who inaugurated the ships in Port Harcourt, said the 18 creeks patrol boats, made up of nine logistics support boats and nine gunboats whose parts were armored, should send clear signals to criminals that “the game is up.”

He said: “Unlike before, we now have flat-bottomed boats that can access streams even when the water has receded.

“Adding these ships to the Service Marine arsenal at a time when more smugglers are fleeing from land to water is just the right thing to do.

“This event undoubtedly marks the beginning of a renewed offensive against those who have chosen the creeks and waterways as a safe haven for their illegal trade,” he stated.

Ali, who also presented the Auto-Mobile Scanner at Onne Port, stated that the scanner would facilitate the service‘s activities, as it would scan no less than 20 containers in one hour and more than 480 containers in 24 hours.

He stated that the Federal Government has plans to bring 135 automobile scanners to curb smuggling, and help in the clearance of goods.

The customs boss called on well-intentioned individuals and organisations to provide the Nigerian Customs Service with credible information that would enable the interception and seizure of contraband items.

President of SEWA West Africa Limited, Murtala Mohammed, said that the submission of SW27GB and SW23BC to Nigeria Customs would help facilitate their operations in the Rivers streams and waterways.

Mohammed said the ships, built by SEWA West Africa Limited in Nigeria, were a laudable achievement by the Federal Government in local content policy.

Lagos Charges MSMEs On Capacity-Building Programmes

0

Lagos State Government has charged the State Council on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to create and drive programmes that would enhance the capacities of MSMEs to deliver on their mandate.

Addressing members of the MSMEs in Ikeja at quarterly council meeting, the Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Dr. Lola Akande, pledged that the ministry would continue to partner with the Council to promote commerce and sustainable business development in the State.

Akande, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Olatokunbo Emokpae, explained that the Council’s meeting on MSMEs is a platform through which technical, financial and other business support linkages are promoted between MSMEs operators and support agencies in the State and at the Federal level.

The commissioner further noted that the meetings also provide an opportunity for credible feedback on the challenges faced by MSMEs in the state, imploring members of the council to proffer lasting solutions to the challenges facing MSMEs in Lagos.

She said: “I must commend all council members for your commitment in ensuring pragmatic solutions to difficulties hindering the growth and development of MSMEs in the State.”

She averred that the state government would continue to initiate and administer policies and interventions that would enhance, promote, attract and harness the potentials of MSMEs for the development and growth of the economy.

112 Illegal Refineries Discovered In Rivers

0

At Least 112 illegal refineries have been discovered in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Chairman of the council, Samuel Nwanosike told newsmen that 99% of the discoveries were made in a particular community located along the OML 17 trunk lines.

The discovery comes on the heels of the recent efforts by the state government to bring an end to the economic sabotage brought as a result of the illegal refineries, as well as the health implications resulting from soot pollution.

Governor Nyesom Wike had pledged N460 million to the 23 local government area chairmen to fight oil bunkering in the state.

This implies that each chairman will receive N20 million to destroy illegal refinery sites that have been identified in their respective domains.

Wike made this pledge on Wednesday when he met with the local government chairmen, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers, Friday Eboka, and the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Aliyu Bature.

“All of you should hire bulldozers, clear all those creeks,” the governor ordered the LG bosses. “The government will give you some money so that they will know that we are serious.

“Those of you who are from the riverine areas, I don’t want to hear it is the creek. Go and clear those areas, apply to the state government, each of you, at least N20 million for a start to hire the equipment.

“That does not mean you will wait before you start. You must start today, tomorrow. CP, please give them the security to do this work. Don’t give them two policemen.”

This comes a week after the governor asked the police commissioner to collaborate with heads of other security agencies in Rivers, council chairmen, and traditional rulers to fish out all those involved in illegal bunkering and artisanal refining for prosecution.

He had accused persons engaged in illegal bunkering and artisanal refining of being responsible for the soot polluting the air and endangering the health of residents of the state.

The governor also declared that the state government has resolved to curb the activities of those involved in crude oil theft and refining once and for all.

Meanwhile, there have been renewed calls to the Federal Government to provide modular refineries to curb the economic sabotage.

California Wildfire Triggers Evacuations, Highway Closed

0

A 1,500-acre fire near the coastal community of Big Sur, California triggered evacuations and closed part of a major highway, state and local officials said.

The Colorado Fire, which has been active since Friday, was 5% contained, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said.

A 20-mile stretch of State Highway 1, a scenic north-south route on the Pacific Coast, was closed from near the beach town of Carmel-by-the-Sea to Andrew Molera State Park.

About 400 people in Monterey County were evacuated from 1,100 structures, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross said, citing county reports.

Four people and a pet stayed overnight at a shelter in a local school, the Red Cross said, Reuters reported.

California has long had an active wildfire season, but in recent years, fueled at least in part by climate change, it has grown longer and more punishing.

Last year, the wildfire season started unusually early amid an ongoing drought and low reservoir levels, Cal Fire said. In January 2021 alone, the state battled 297 fires on 1,171 acres, the office said.

The Colorado Fire is the only fire listed on Cal Fire’s incident list so far in 2022.

This year, California is also grappling with the Santa Ana winds. A high wind warning was in effect for the area, with possible gusts of up to 70 miles per hour (112.65 kph), according to the National Weather Service.

But winds had improved and were forecast to remain light throughout the weekend, the Red Cross said.

Boris Johnson Faces Crucial Week In Battle To Remain UK Prime Minister Amid ‘Partygate’ Scandal

0

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, fighting for his political life over revelations about his role in parties during strict lockdown, faces one of the most crucial weeks of his time in office and one that will likely decide whether he remains in 10 Downing Street, or is forced to step down.

Johnson apologized earlier this month after it emerged that he and members of his Downing Street staff had broken lockdown rules with Johnson attending a May 2020 “bring your own booze” party in the gardens of the prime minister’s residence. Johnson claimed he was only there briefly to greet staff and thought it was a work-related event.

“Mr. Speaker I want to apologize, I know millions of people across the country have made extraordinary sacrifices over the last 18 months. I know the anguish they have been through, unable to mourn their relatives, unable to live their lives as they want or do the things they love,” a somber Johnson said in the House of Commons.

Since then, more revelations have emerged, including that parties were held on the eve of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral — for which Downing Street has since apologized to Buckingham Palace. An inquiry by civil servant Sue Gray is believed now to be looking at approximately a dozen parties held during the pandemic.

Despite the apology, Johnson has continued to defend himself, saying he believed it to be a work event and that he was unaware that it was in breach of the lockdown rules.

The scandal has caused outrage across the country, with Brits who have missed funerals, or the chance to say goodbye to dying relatives and friends, venting their anger at the man whose government imposed those restrictions — only to then flout them himself.

Additionally, it is leading to questions whether Johnson lied to the House of Commons in his initial statements on his behavior. Knowingly misleading the House is seen as a grave offense in the British parliament, and ministers who are found to have done so are expected to resign.

As more details have come out, the poll numbers for Johnson have been brutal, with polls also showing a double-digit lead for the opposition Labour Party over his Conservative Party — leading to more pressure for him to step down from members of his own party.

Former Conservative cabinet minister David Davis addressed the House of Commons and told Johnson, “In the name of God, go.”

Separately, some Tory MPs have complained about bullying and intimidation from government whips to push members to back Johnson. William Wragg said that he intends to go to the police next week about the conduct. Meanwhile, Tory MP Christian Wakeford defected to Labour over the scandal.

Gray is expected to finish her inquiry into the revelations this coming week. Johnson’s survival rests in large part on what Gray’s report finds. It could either ease the pressure off Johnson, or it could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Sweden’s Power Corporation To Supply ‘Pink Hydrogen’ From Nuclear Facility

0

Swedish power corporation OKG is to supply fossil free ‘pink hydrogen’ from its Oskarshamn 3 nuclear facility.

The first contract is reported to be with the industrial gas company Linde Gas, with the first delivery due early in the year.

OKG, owned by Uniper and Fortum, has long produced hydrogen from the electrolysis of water to use in the cooling systems of the nuclear generators. With the closure of the Oskarshamn units 1 and 2 and only unit 3 remaining in operation, the company has an over-capacity of hydrogen.

“Initially it is about relatively small volumes. But we have expertise as well as plant and infrastructure and I see a very good potential to expand this business,” says Johan Lundberg, CEO of OKG.

“The need for hydrogen will increase gradually and we have received strong support from our owners to develop this business opportunity.”

OKG says in a statement that the hydrogen plant is currently being modernised, including a new control system, while other components will also be replaced in order to expand operations.

Johan Svenningsson, CEO of Uniper Sweden, says that the ambition is to develop the growing market for hydrogen together with Fortum.

“The Swedish electricity system is virtually fossil-free, and we therefore have good conditions for producing large volumes of hydrogen, which will play an important role when Sweden changes.”

With the agreement, Oskarshamn on Sweden’s east coast becomes the country’s first municipality to offer so-called ‘pink hydrogen’ – also referred to as ‘red’ or ‘purple’ hydrogen – produced by nuclear power.

Data on pink hydrogen production globally is limited and any volumes must be small. However, that is likely to change with the growing resurgence of support for nuclear power and for example, the EU’s proposal to categorise certain nuclear generation as contributing to climate change mitigation.

The IEA’s Global Hydrogen Review 2021 reports around a dozen demonstration projects with a combined 250MW electrolyser capacity exploring using nuclear power for hydrogen production in Canada, China, Russia, UK and US. However, not all are expected to be realised.

France has signalled that nuclear-powered hydrogen production could have a major role in the country’s future energy mix, while the UK government Nuclear Industry Council’s hydrogen roadmap has nuclear power-producing one-third of the country’s clean hydrogen needs by 2050.

Portugal Begins Early Voting In Snap General Election

0

Early voting began in Portugal on Sunday for a snap general election, with polls showing the incumbent Socialists still ahead though with their lead over the nearest centre-right rivals narrowing.

Over 300,000 voters have signed up to vote a week early, with polls opening at 8:00 am (0800 GMT).

The early voting option was provided this year to reduce crowding on Election Day, next Sunday.

“I preferred to vote today as today I’m fine — next Sunday, I don’t know,” proffered one early voter, Elisa Fialho, a woman in her 70s who turned out to cast her ballot with her husband in the capital Lisbon.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who has led two consecutive minority Socialist governments since 2015, was expected to cast his ballot in the northern city of Porto at around 0930 GMT.

“All the conditions are there for everybody to go out and vote in security,” said Costa after voting.

The snap polls were called after Costa failed to secure support for his 2022 budget from the two smaller far-left parties that had been propping up his government.

It was the first time a budget was voted down since the EU member returned to democracy in 1974.

The Socialists have around 38 percent support, compared with just over 30 percent for the main opposition centre-right PSD, which would leave Costa once again without a working majority in parliament, according to a poll of polls compiled by private Radio Renascenca.

But surveys carried out in recent days have shown the gap narrowing, with at least one putting the two parties in a statistical tie when the margin of error is taken into account.

The election could see gains for the upstart far-right party Chega, which entered parliament for the first time with a single seat during the last election in 2019.

Polls give it nearly seven percent support, which would make it the third-biggest force in parliament.

Nigeria, Cameroon Will Deepen Collaboration To Tackle Insecurity – Olonisakin

0

Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Cameroon, Amb. Abayomi Olonisakin has assured Nigerians of stronger collaboration between Nigeria and Cameroon to tackle insecurity, especially along the corridors of both countries.

Olonisakin told newsmen in Garoua, Cameroon on Saturday that deepening bilateral relations and welfare of Nigerians in Cameroon had been his priority since he assumed duty in 2021.

“I want to firstly say the relationship between Nigeria and Cameroon has been cordial.

“We are like brothers and that has also played out in all areas,” he said.

The envoy said both countries were exploring more ways of tackling the insurgency and general insecurity along their common borders.

“On security, I can assure you that both Nigeria and Cameroon have been working on bilateral and multilateral levels.

“This of course involves the multinational joint task force which is under the Lake Chad Basin Commission.

“These two approaches have really assisted in addressing the security issues in the far Lake Chad region.

“So, we will continue to enhance and support these initiatives so that we could get done with the job (tackling insecurity),” he said

Olonisakin said that he had embarked on a tour of Cameroon to meet with Nigerian communities with a view to ensuring their welfare and resolving pending issues

“Since I assumed duty here (last year) I have gone round to meet with Nigerian communities to see and hear where they have issues.

“We’ve been able to step it up to a level that we can resolve it with the government and of course, there has been various commissions, committees that have been working like the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission,” he added.

Olonisakin, a former Chief of Defence Staff, who hails from Ekiti was appointed Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Cameroon in June, 2021.
