General Motors says it will spend about $154 million to revamp an aging factory near Buffalo, New York, so it can make a key part for electric vehicle motors.
The automaker says it will add about 230 jobs at the factory in Lockport, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northeast of Buffalo, to build stator modules, the part that creates a magnetic field to turn the motor. The part will go into motors for new electric trucks and SUVs.
In addition to renovation, the money will go toward buying and installing equipment needed to make the new part.
Currently the Lockport plant has about 1,500 workers who make radiators, condensers, heater cores, oil coolers and other parts for internal combustion engines in trucks and SUVs.
The new positions would be filled between 2023 and 2026, the company said in a statement.
GM says renovations to the plant will begin immediately. The plant built in 1910 will keep building combustion engine parts.
GM has set a goal of selling only electric passenger vehicles by 2035.
It plans to spend $35 billion to roll out more than 30 new battery vehicles globally by 2025 as it aims to unseat Tesla as the electric vehicle sales leader.
Chipmaker Intel it will invest $20 billion to build a new factory in Ohio, an attempt to help alleviate a global shortage of chips powering everything from phones to cars to home appliances while also signaling the giant company’s commitment to manufacturing crucial technology products in the U.S.
The move could also create a new technology hub in central Ohio as related businesses that support chip manufacturing open new facilities and bring expertise to the region.
Intel said two planned factories, or fabs, will support its own line of processors, as well as its new “foundry” business, which will build chips designed by other firms. Existing chip foundries turn out a vast number of custom-designed chips, mostly in Asia.
The future production site aims to meet multiple needs, Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger said during a White House event.
Chips built there won’t just reduce supply chain pressures, he said, but will also bolster U.S. national security while bringing more tech jobs to the region.
The two factories on a 1,000-acre site in Licking County, just east of Columbus, are expected to create 3,000 company jobs — many of them highly skilled — and 7,000 construction jobs.
The facility will support tens of thousands of additional jobs for suppliers and partners, Intel and local and state officials said Friday.
“A semiconductor factory is not like other factories,” said Gelsinger, a former Intel executive who returned to the company as CEO in 2021. “It’s more like a small city supporting a vibrant community of services, suppliers and ancillary businesses. You can think about this as a magnet for the entire tech industry.”

When you’re feeling too well, eating may be one of the last things on your mind.
However, eating the right foods when you feel sick can do so much more than just provide energy.
Certain foods may help you feel better, recover more quickly, or stay hydrated as you recover.
Broths
Like chicken soup, broths are excellent sources of fluid and electrolytes that can be helpful when you’re sick. When hot, they may also help relieve sinus congestion.
They’re full of flavor and rich in a variety of nutrients while still being easy on your digestive system.
Additionally, bone broths are rich in collagen and amino acids (building blocks of protein) from animal bones, which may help promote a faster recovery, although research is still lacking.
If you need to follow a salt-restricted diet, make sure you choose low sodium or no-salt-added broths if buying pre-made broths from the grocery store.
Chicken soup
Chicken soup has been a go-to for sickness for generations — and for good reason. It’s an easy-to-eat source of vitamins, minerals, calories, and protein, which are nutrients your body may need in larger quantities while you’re recovering from an illness.
Chicken soup is also a rich source of fluid and electrolytes, which are helpful if you’re at risk of dehydration due to diarrhea, vomiting, sweating, or fever.
The soup’s warmth may help reduce congestion, as hot or spicy liquids can be helpful for this.
The chicken in chicken soup also contains the amino acid cysteine. N-acetyl-cysteine, a form of cysteine, breaks apart mucus and has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
Homemade chicken soup made from bone broth is also rich in collagen and nutrients that may help promote recovery — although there’s not enough research on bone broth’s effects on immune health to back up these claims.
Hot tea
Tea is a favorite remedy for many symptoms associated with colds and the flu.
Just like chicken soup, hot tea acts as a natural decongestant. The tea needs to be hot to help relieve congestion, but it shouldn’t be so hot that it further irritates your throat.
Although some teas do contain caffeine, tea doesn’t appear to contribute to dehydration or to cause any increased water loss.
This means sipping on tea throughout the day is a great way to stay hydrated while relieving congestion.
Tea also contains polyphenols. These natural substances found in plants may have a large number of possible health benefits, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and even potential anticancer effects.
Honey
Honey has some antibacterial properties and, in fact, is often used as an antiseptic wound dressing for cuts or burns. Honey may also stimulate the immune system. Many people use local raw honey to relieve seasonal allergies, but there’s currently no research to support this use for honey. Additionally, honey may help suppress cough in children. However, it shouldn’t be given to children under 12 months old due to the risk of contamination with botulism-causing bacteria.
Garlic
Garlic provides many health benefits and has been used in herbal medicine for centuries.
In test-tube and animal studies, it’s been shown to have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects.
One study in 146 people found that participants who took a garlic-based supplement had about 70% fewer sick days than the placebo group. However, the authors noted that this isn’t enough evidence to conclude that garlic can help prevent illness, and more research is needed.
Additionally, aged garlic extract supplements may enhance immune function and decrease the severity of colds and the flu.
Adding garlic to food when you’re sick can both add flavor and make your food even more effective at fighting off cold or flu symptoms.
Ginger
Ginger is widely used in food, in herbal medicine, and as a home remedy, and it’s probably best known for its anti-nausea effects. It’s been shown to effectively relieve nausea related to pregnancy and cancer treatment. So if you’re feeling nauseous or throwing up, ginger is one of the best natural remedies available to relieve these symptoms.
Use fresh ginger in cooking, brew some ginger tea, or pick up some ginger ale from the store to get these benefits. Just make sure that whatever you’re using contains real ginger or ginger extract, not just ginger flavor.
Spicy foods
Spicy foods like chili peppers contain capsaicin, which causes a hot, burning sensation when touched.
In high enough concentrations, capsaicin can have a desensitizing effect. It’s often used in pain-relieving gels and patches.
Many people report that eating spicy foods causes a runny nose, breaking up mucus and clearing out the sinus passages.
While few studies have tested this effect, capsaicin does seem to thin out mucus, making it easier to expel. Nasal capsaicin sprays have been used with good results to relieve congestion and itching.
However, you should avoid spicy foods if you already have an upset stomach. Spicy food can cause bloating, pain, and nausea in some people.
Certain fruits
Fruits are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber, which can support your overall health and immune function.
Many fruits are rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant vitamin that helps the immune system function properly.
Additionally, some fruits contain antioxidants called anthocyanins, which give certain fruits — like strawberries and blueberries — their red and blue colors.
Anthocyanins make berries excellent foods to eat when sick because they have strong anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immune-boosting effects.
Several animal and test-tube studies have shown that fruit extracts high in anthocyanins can prevent common viruses and bacteria from attaching to cells. They also stimulate your body’s immune response.
Additionally, one review of 14 studies noted that flavonoid supplements, which are made from a type of antioxidants found in fruit, decreased the number of days people were sick with a cold by 40%.
Green leafy vegetables
Leafy green vegetables such as spinach, romaine lettuce, and kale are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They’re especially good sources of plant-based iron, vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate.
Dark green vegetables are also loaded with beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols. These act as antioxidants to protect cells from damage and help fight inflammation. Add spinach to an omelet for a quick, nutrient-packed, protein-rich meal. You can also try tossing a handful of kale into a fruit smoothie. Most leafy greens also make excellent additions to soup, which is another great choice when sick.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is bland and easy to eat but also provides calories, vitamins, and minerals you need when you’re sick.
Instead of buying artificially flavored oatmeal with lots of added sugar, consider adding a small amount of honey or fruit to rolled or steel-cut oats for even more health benefits.
Takeaway
Resting, staying hydrated, and getting proper nutrition are some of the most important things you can do to feel better and recover faster when sick.
Fortunately, many foods have benefits that go beyond providing your body with nutrients.
While no food alone can cure sickness, eating the right foods may help support your immune system and offer relief from certain symptoms.
Academic activities in the nation’s universities may be disrupted by the end of this month if the Federal Government is unable to implement the Memorandum of Action, MoA, it signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
Also, the government is expected to renegotiate the 2007 Agreement it entered into with the union.
The National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union was waiting for the period of grace given the government to lapse before taking the necessary steps.
“As a responsible union, we are consulting widely on the issues at stake. We have an MoA that is yet to be implemented fully and we also have the renegotiation of the 2007 Agreement pending. A lot of groups and concerned individuals have stepped in to intervene in the matter.
“We are responsible unionists and citizens and we must give room to those interventions; may be they can help persuade the government to do the needful. We have given them up till the end of this January and if nothing is forthcoming, we can take the next step,” he said.
It was gathered that if the union’s demands are not met, nationwide mobilisation of members would follow and congresses held to mandate the national leadership to act appropriately.
The MoA came into being following the suspension of a nine-month strike by the union in December 2020. The issues in contention include funding for the revitalisation of the universities and the payment of Earned Academic Allowance which the government has fulfilled.
However, the payment of withheld salaries and promotion arrears of members is still pending, while the proliferation of universities, especially by state governments, is yet to be addressed.
Another major area of disagreement between the government and the union is the use of the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System, IPPIS as the union says it does not fit into the university system. It has, therefore, come up with the University Transparency and Accountability Solution, UTAS to replace IPPIS.
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has faulted the assertion by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is not a registered trade union.
In a statement issued on Thursday by NLC President Ayuba Wabba, the Congress said that contrary to the position expressed by the Head of Service
ASUU is a trade union affiliated to the NLC.
NLC quoted Yemi Esan as having said at a Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council Meeting, that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is not a trade union.
“We find this claim as a misrepresentation of facts.
For the purpose of setting the records straight, the Nigeria Labour Congress wishes to disclaim the misleading statement by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation on the status of ASUU as an organisation.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities formed in 1978 was a successor body to the Nigerian Association of University Teachers formed in 1965. Since its formation, ASUU is a trade union affiliated to the NLC,” he said.
Wabba said that the founding President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Hassan Sunmonu currently serves as one of the National Trustees of ASUU.
According to him, the history of ASUU as a trade union has been that of struggles.
He said the persistent demand and activism by ASUU for wage and social justice has seen the union and its members come under very heavy shellacking by successive governments in Nigeria.
“We implore the ASUU which has been the intellectual backbone of Organized Labour and workers in Nigeria to ignore the disparaging claims by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation”.
“Yemi-Esan is not well informed of the claims she made as she is not a competent authority to assert on trade union registration and indeed ancillary trade union concerns in Nigeria. We also urge Nigerian workers and other well-meaning members of the public to ignore her comments,” he added.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) has set up a 16-man ministerial committee to upscale and develop a standard curriculum for all its training schools across the country to boost staff capacity and meet global best standards.
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, while inaugurating the committee in Abuja, said the federal government would continue to support the Corps because it is aware that the training and retraining of personnel is essential in meeting with the dynamism of the 21st century and in revamping and strengthening the Corps.
“As you prepare to improve on the curriculum of the Corps, there are other things that you need to prepare as well such as physical structures. They must be fit and made ready so that when the curriculum is developed, it will not be left in the archives but put into proper use.”
Aregbesola, who was represented by the Director of Special Services in the ministry, Peter Ekponu, said the committee membership included seasoned individuals from the academia and the security sector.
The Commandant- General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Audi, stated that the agency is prepared and determined to succeed and chart a new course towards entrenching professionalism, and to build a global elite organisation that can compete effectively with its peers anywhere in the world as well as discharge its mandate diligently with every sense of civility and integrity within the ambit of the law.
He said the present move was a deliberate step towards actualising his vision to reposition the Corps, adding: “I set out to upgrade facilities in our existing training colleges knowing that training is an essential ingredient towards attaining optimal performance, skill acquisition/capacity building and productivity.
“I also initiated the process of developing a standard curriculum for the training schools in order to develop career progression and development courses which will form the basis for future progression in service.”
“The Corps that I met on ground had become a shadow of its old self. There was low staff morale, indiscipline and loss of confidence in the system borne out of stagnation, unregulated pattern of promotion among others.
“As a matter of fact, there were no set standards for measuring performance and career progression in the Corps. How then can you get the best in such an unstable system where merit was not given due consideration in determining who gets what? I therefore saw the need to rebuild staff confidence and further boost their morale which was at the lowest ebb”, he added.
The ministerial committee, which is given a four-week timeline, is made up of eminent Nigerian personalities drawn from the academia, the military, police, paramilitary services and other professional bodies, including retired senior officers of the NSCDC and professionals who are experts in curriculum development in the field of education.
The committee is chaired by the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Professor Suleiman Muhammed, an expert in crime and sociology while Professor of Law, Ibrahim Adamu, from the University of Jos, is the vice chairman.
The Nigerian fighter Anthony Joshua is hungry to get a measure of some payback when he faces Oleksandr Usyk in a rematch.
Former two-time heavyweight champion suffered defeat when both first met last September, losing his three belts to the Ukrainian but Joshua is confident he will become a three-time heavyweight champion of the world again.
While many analysts are backing Usky to emerge victorious again, Joshua has vowed there will be a different outcome in the rematch in April.
“I’ve come up short twice, but the majority of times I have overcome many obstacles. Next fight I’m going to beat him (Usyk) and I’m going to take those belts from him,” he told Stuff.
“And I’m going to reign again to become three-time heavyweight champion of the world – whether people like it or not.”
Joshua has also detailed the changes he has been making in his team, including dropping the biggest hint yet that he’s parted ways with long-term trainer Rob McCracken.
“As I only fight once or twice a year, I have to stay busy and active in the gyms. But because I took a loss in my last fight, there’s been a lot of reconstruction happening in my team.
“So I’ve approached training with more of a mental approach, looking at ways I can improve rather than just jumping back in the deep end from a physical point of view.
“I’m not happy about what happened previously because that’s a competitor’s mindset. You have to be angry at losing, it’s not acceptable. So now it’s about driving forward.
“One thing people know about me is that I bounce back and I don’t take losses. I fight the best consistently – that’s always been a part of my DNA.”
There are days you want to have great curly lashes and you can’t seem to lay hold on a curler but you can attempt to curl the lashes without a curler. Yep, experts do have a few tricks up their sleeves.
Still, we advise using a proper lash curler if you can, but in a pinch, these tricks will give you the bend you’re looking for:
Use a spoon
Using a (clean!) spoon is one of the most popular DIY lash-curling hacks out there; Miranda Kerr, model and founder of KORA Organics, even swears by the trick for her everyday makeup routine. Makeup artist Jenny Patinkin also gives it her expert stamp of approval: “Using a spoon is an old technique that definitely will work in a pinch,” she says.
Grab your spoon. Kerr suggests an iced teaspoon (or parfait spoon), presumably because the sides are thinner than your average tablespoon. Align the edge of the spoon, face down, with the base of your lashes.
Starting at the outer corner of your eyelashes, push your lashes onto the rounded edge of the spoon with your thumb. Hold for a few seconds before releasing, repeating, and working your way inward.
Repeat the process on the other eye.
As with your typical curler, just a few seconds of hold will keep them lifted—you don’t want to tug on those delicate hairs and pluck them loose. As a general rule of thumb: “Do not pull them into submission because they fall out easily,” says celebrity makeup artist Jamie Dorman. “You want to actually have lashes to curl.”
Use your mascara wand
Not all mascara brushes are created equal: Some are great for volume, others provide separation, and some are strictly meant for lift and curl. For the latter, you’ll want a curved mascara wand, which helps provide lift to the base, and the bristles should be fairly dense, especially on the inner end.
“If you’re looking for curl, you want a mascara wand that is dense with a lot of bristles,” says makeup artist Jude Andam. “Similar to a round brush for your hair, this mascara brush will grab lashes and gently pull them up as you apply to create a lifted look.” Graylane Beauty’s Curling Mascara and Kosas’ The Big Clean Mascara both fit the bill.
Your mascara application can make all the difference, too: “Building a heavy layer of mascara at the base of your lashes can help give them some lift,” says Patinkin. “Go in with a densely bristled applicator and press and lift into the base of your lashes while making a gentle back-and-forth motion. Don’t take too much [product] all the way up to the tips, but do hold your lashes up with the applicator while the base dries, and then repeat once or twice more.” By holding the lashes up as the mascara dries at the base, they should stay lifted. Just don’t pack on pigment at the tips of the lashes, as you can weigh them back down.
If that doesn’t work, “Another way to curl your lashes is to take a thickening mascara, lay it on top of the lashes, and twist the wand as you apply in an outward and upward direction,” suggests Dorman. “This will catch your lashes as you twist and pull them up into a curl.” Full disclosure: This trick takes some practice, as you can easily smudge mascara onto your lids the first couple of tries.
Use a cotton swab
You have a valuable window while you wait for your mascara to dry—take advantage of it by encouraging even more curl! After applying your mascara, you can hold a cotton swab horizontally at the base of your lash line. Gently lift the lashes to your desired position, and hold them there until your mascara fully dries. When you pull away, the lashes should remain lifted.
Use a new toothbrush
Similar to the cotton swab trick, you can also use a toothbrush to manually lift the hairs after coating on mascara. Apply your product of choice, brush through the hairs with the toothbrush, then hold the tips of the lashes upward while the mascara dries. After a minute or so, the lashes should stay put. This probably goes without saying, but make sure you always use a brand-new toothbrush. “I wouldn’t want to put all those germs close to my eyes,” says Patinkin, and we wholeheartedly agree.
Use castor oil
Let’s say you want your lashes curled and lifted but you don’t feel like wearing makeup. Consider castor oil your lash hero: Brush the oil through the lashes with a clean spoolie from base to tip until they’re fully coated, then hold the tip of the lashes up with that same spoolie, a cotton swab, or a brand-new toothbrush while the oil absorbs into the base.
Essentially, it’s easier to manipulate the hairs when they’re wet, either with mascara or oil. Plus, castor oil is full of fatty acids that effectively moisturize the lash hairs, and keeping eyelashes hydrated helps them stay full and lifted over time—so you’ll achieve immediate and long-term curl.
Don’t use heat
Technically, heat works: Like the hair on your head, you can manipulate your lash hairs with hot tools to achieve dramatic, long-lasting curl—that’s why heated lash curlers are a thing. But just as daily heat styling can do a number on your hair, your lash hairs can become damaged and brittle over time; and if you try a heated DIY trick, you can risk burning those fragile hairs or even the surrounding lid skin.
For example, you may have come across a tip to heat a spoon before using the old-school technique we described above, but celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg, founder of Blighlighter, says it’s best to avoid the heated trick. “Do yourself a favor and skip over the heated spoon trick (you can burn yourself easily),” she notes.
Patinkin agrees: “If you heat a spoon too much, like with a blow dryer, it can actually singe your lids.” Similarly, people might heat a metal makeup brush and wrap their lashes around it (sort of like a makeshift curling iron), which sounds compelling in theory but can easily go awry. “I think getting too much heat too close to the delicate skin on the eyes is pretty risky,” notes Patinkin.
Takeaway
Your lashes are super fragile and delicate, so you don’t want to manipulate them with too many DIY tricks (and we recommend avoiding heat at all costs). But if you’re in a bind, the above hacks can help you achieve sky-high lift and curl. “Ultimately, be gentle,” adds Dorman. “It’s OK if not every lash falls into place or if you miss ones at the corner—it’s more important to have healthy eyes.” Couldn’t agree more.
