Hungary Assesses Hydrogen Transportation Using Existing Gas Network

0

In Hungary, natural gas network operator FGSZ has selected DNV to explore the suitability of transporting hydrogen and hydrogen blends via its grid network.

DNV will assess FGSZ’s DN600 pipeline and valve stations for hydrogen transportation under various scenarios.

The development comes as Europe is embarking on various measures to grow the hydrogen economy, despite being hindered by a lack of infrastructure.

According to DNV’s latest report, Rising to the Challenge of a Hydrogen Economy, the use of existing natural gas infrastructure has been identified as a potential solution to addressing the lack of infrastructure.

Some 78% of industry stakeholders surveyed by DNV state that re-purposing of existing gas infrastructure will help kick-start the hydrogen economy.

Re-purposing the existing gas network for hydrogen would help Hungary to accelerate the decarbonisation of energy and industry and will comply with European Green Deal climate laws.

FGSZ’s pipeline is 5,874km long, has been in operation for the past 70 years and when filled up to full pressure can cover Hungary’s gas demand for one day in the coldest winter.

A deal has been inked to explore the feasibility of producing green hydrogen from waste plastics in Japan, a move that will expand the circular economy concept whilst ensuring energy decarbonisation and security.

The agreement has been signed by Hydrogen Utopia and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Mitsubishi will explore Distributed Modular Generation technology developed by UK firm Powerhouse Energy to convert waste plastic into hydrogen.

In September 2021, Powerhouse Energy entered into an agreement with Hydrogen Utopia for the commercialisation of its technology worldwide.

As part of the deal with Hydrogen Utopia, Mitsubishi will review the technology for a year and assess its potential for commercialisation in Japan.

In the event the technology is fit for use and commercialisation in Japan, Mitsubishi and Hydrogen Utopia will have to enter into new arrangements, according to the statement.

The signing of the deal comes as Japan is embarking on various initiatives aimed at sourcing hydrogen and increasing its production locally to decarbonise its industries.

Japan is a highly industrialised country an efficient hydrogen economy can promote energy security, industrial competitiveness, and carbon emissions reduction. In 2017, Japan issued the Basic Hydrogen Strategy, becoming one of the first countries to adopt a national hydrogen framework.

The community pharmacist has warned Nigerians against the indiscriminate use of paracetamol, noting that it could damage the liver and kidney.

This was disclosed by a pharmaceutical scientist, Tony Oyawole, on Wednesday. He further said that, people engaging in the indiscriminate use of paracetamol are also at increased risk of blood cancer.

The community pharmacist, urged Nigerians to refrain from self-prescription of the pain killer, noting that using it indiscriminately can cause serious health problems.

He said while paracetamol is a simple drug, it is also a very dangerous when not used according to prescription.

“The over dosage of paracetamol can affect the liver and kidney. So, if it affects the liver and kidney and somebody who is already having an issue with liver and kidney is being subjected to over dosage of the drug, it could be lethal because those organs can be compromised.

“That is why it is advised that it should be taken strictly the way it was prescribed” Pharm Oyawole said.

Oyawole further stated that taking paracetamol indiscriminately could also make the abuser of the drug to be more susceptible to blood cancers.

“When you say a chronic paracetamol user, you mean people who take paracetamol at any little pain for maybe what he perhaps needs a little rest for.

“It can become a habit to such extent that the person takes it daily or routinely. This is not advisable. Ideally, paracetamol is supposed to be taken three times or at most not more than four times a day according to the prescription.

“But when you have a situation where you are taking paracetamol five or six times a day, it is engaging the liver and subjecting the kidney to untold hardship,” Oyawole said.

South Africa Education Department To Release Matric Results On Media Platforms

1

South Africa’s Department of Basic Education says it will abide by the North Gauteng High Court ruling regarding the release of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results on media platforms.

This is after AfriForum, Maroela Media and a Grade 12 learner made an urgent application for the court to reverse the department’s decision to no longer release matric results on public platforms, which cited the violation of the Protection of Personal Information Act or POPI Act.

However, according to the department, the conditions of the court ruling must be taken into account in line with the provisions of the POPI Act.

In addition to accessing results from media such as newspapers, the department has urged candidates to register on the website to view the results when they become available on Thursday, 20 January 2022.

Registration is now open and more than 10 000 people had successfully signed up by lunchtime today.

According to the department, candidates will have to go through a two-step verification process before receiving confirmation of their registration.

In addition, a 13-digit ID number and exam number will be required for registration.

The department said its website is zero-rated, which means it can be accessed whether you have data or not.
