Amazing Foods to Eat in the Morning

0

It is always said, Breakfast is a great way to start the day.

While some people prefer to skip breakfast, others need a source of energy to get going.

If you enjoy breakfast, choosing nutritious foods can provide long-lasting energy and keep you full for hours. These foods are typically high in fiber, protein, healthy fats, and micronutrients.

While it’s best to avoid unhealthy options that are high in sugar, refined carbs, and additives, it’s not always easy to know what to choose. As such, the list below will help you build a healthy breakfast.

Eggs

Fried eggs in a frying pan. Food. Breakfast. Healthy food

Eggs make a simple, nutritious breakfast choice.

They’re an excellent source of protein, which helps support muscle synthesis. Since protein takes a while to digest, it also helps keep you feeling full.

In one study, people given eggs and toast for breakfast reported significantly less hunger than those given bran cereal, suggesting that the egg group’s higher protein intake of 25 grams versus 11 grams promoted greater fullness.

Furthermore, the egg group ate fewer calories at lunch, suggesting that this dish may support weight management.

Additionally, egg yolks contain lutein and zeaxanthin. These antioxidants help prevent eye disorders like cataracts and macular degeneration.

Eggs are also one of the best sources of choline, a vital nutrient for brain and liver health.

Contrary to popular belief, eggs don’t raise cholesterol levels in most people despite their high cholesterol content. In fact, one review found that eggs have a mild protective effect against heart disease.

That said, try to limit your intake of highly processed breakfast items that are commonly paired with eggs, such as breakfast sausages and bacon. Instead, eat your eggs with other nutritious foods, such as whole grain toast, whole fruit, or sautéed vegetables.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a classic breakfast option and it’s highly nutritious.

It’s made from rolled or steel cut oats, which contain a unique fiber called beta glucan.

This soluble fiber not only helps reduce cholesterol levels but also promotes feelings of fullness by delaying stomach emptying and triggering the release of peptide YY, a fullness hormone that may prevent overeating. Plus, oats are a good source of iron, B vitamins, manganese, magnesium, zinc, and selenium.

They also contain around 10 grams of protein per cup (81 grams). To boost the protein content, make oatmeal with milk instead of water, mix in some protein powder, or serve it with a side of eggs.

Keep in mind that oats don’t contain gluten but are often processed alongside gluten-containing grains, which increases the risk of cross contamination. Therefore, people with gluten-related disorders should choose oats that have been certified gluten-free.

Greek yogurt

Greek yogurt is a great option if you’re looking for a quick breakfast.

It’s made by straining whey and other liquid from milk curds, which produces a creamy product that’s more concentrated in protein than regular yogurt.

In addition, it’s lower in calories than other protein sources. A 1-cup (245-gram) serving has 25 grams of protein and only 149 calories.

Plus, Greek yogurt is full of beneficial nutrients like calcium, vitamin B12, zinc, potassium, and phosphorus.

Certain types are good sources of probiotics like Bifidobacteria, which support your digestion. To make sure that your yogurt contains probiotics, look for the phrase “contains live and active cultures” on the label.

If you prefer an even creamier, higher protein product, Icelandic yogurt — known as skyr — is another great option.

Try topping Greek yogurt with berries or chopped fruit to add more fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Chia seeds

Chia seeds are extremely nutritious and a great source of fiber.

In fact, just 1 ounce (28 grams) provides an impressive 10 grams of fiber per serving.

What’s more, a portion of this fiber is soluble, meaning that it absorbs water and increases the volume of food moving through your digestive tract. In turn, this process helps you feel full.

These seeds’ high soluble fiber may likewise help stabilize blood sugar levels and support heart health.

Though chia seeds aren’t high in protein, you can eat them with high protein foods, such as Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or a protein shake.

Cottage cheese

Cottage cheese is a fantastic high protein breakfast item, packing an impressive 24 grams of protein per cup (220 grams).

A high protein breakfast is linked to greater fullness and reduced hunger. In fact, one study found cottage cheese to be as filling and satisfying as eggs.

Cottage cheese is also low in calories, providing only 180 calories per cup (220 grams). Therefore, it may support weight loss making you feel fuller for longer.

In fact, one review associated a diet high in dairy products, especially high protein foods, with greater weight loss.

You can eat cottage cheese with many other nutritious foods, such as berries, peaches, tomatoes, cucumbers, chia seeds, flaxseeds, or granola.

Whole wheat toast

If you prefer a simple breakfast in the morning, give whole wheat toast a try.

Whole grain toast is high in fiber and complex carbs, which digest slowly and don’t rapidly raise blood sugar levels.

You can spread any number of nutritious toppings on whole wheat toast, including:

fried eggs and tomatoes, avocado and chili flakes, peanut butter and banana, cottage cheese and strawberries, sliced figs and honey, tuna, sliced turkey or chicken, baked beans, egg salad and many more. For extra fiber and protein, try sprouted grain bread, 2 slices of which provide around 8 grams of fiber and 10 grams of protein.

Fruits

If you don’t want a full meal but still crave a bite in the morning, try fruits.

All fruits are relatively low in calories and contain good amounts of fiber and simple sugars. The fiber in fruit helps slow your body’s absorption of its sugars, giving you a steady source of energy. Depending on the type of fruit, you’ll also get various vitamins and minerals.

For example, many fruits like guava, kiwi, strawberries, papaya, acerola cherries, and lychee are high in vitamin C, which acts as an antioxidant and plays a key role in skin health. Other fruits like bananas, oranges, cantaloupe, papaya, and mango are high in potassium and all great choices for breakfast.

Furthermore, fruits provide an array of polyphenol compounds and antioxidants depending on their color. For instance, guava is high in lycopene while purple plums pack anthocyanins. This is why it’s important to eat fruits of various colors.

Research indicates that eating whole fruit may offer numerous benefits, such as a decreased risk of heart disease and cancer, lower rates of depression and poor mental health, healthy aging, and better gut health.

Since fruit juice lacks fiber and is less likely to keep you full, it’s best to stick with whole fruit most often. For a balanced breakfast, pair fruit with high protein foods, such as eggs, Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese.

Takeaway

There are several varieties of foods that can fit in as excellent choices for Breakfast what you must keep in mind is that your choice should be very nutritious, packed with protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals also high in fiber which will keep you full for longer.

Morocco Seal Top Spot With Hard Fought Gabon Draw

0

The Atlas Lions of Morocco twice came from behind to draw Gabon 2-2 and finish top of Group C at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021.

Allevinah and Boupendza twice gave the Panthers the lead before Boufal and Hakimi helped Morocco snatch a point and top spot.

The opening exchanges saw both sides cancelling each other in the middle of the park. The Panthers, who are missing the services of their talisman Aubameyang, look a threat on the break with Lloyd Palun and Bruno Ecuele Manga dominating the defence.

Guelor Kaku Kanga threaten the Atlas Lions goal when his fierce shot from distance narrowly missed the target.

Gabon found the breakthrough midway through the first half courtesy of Jim Ngowet Allevinah. Allevinah pounce on a defensive mistake in the Moroccan defence to slot past stand-in keeper Monir El Kajoui.

The Atlas Lions who had already cemented their place in the knockout stages after winning their opening two matches responded with a chance of their own. Jean Noel Amonome had to be alerted to deny El Kaabi an open goal from En-Nesyri’s delivery.

Soufiane Chakla agonizingly headed wide of Amonome’s goal before El Kaabi and Azz-Eddine Ounahi saw their efforts going off target.

The Moroccan goalkeeper pulled a brilliant double save to keep this side into the match on the stroke of half time. Monir El Kajoui tipped over Kanga’s stinging free kick before stopping Lloyd Palun glancing header with a diving save.

Vahid Halilhodzic’s side came close to drawing level inside the first minute of the second half through captain Faycal Fajr’s long range effort.

Allevinah missed a chance to double the Panthers’ advantage on 55 minutes. Boupendza found him with a neat through ball, latching on to it before firing wide. En-Nesyri had the ball into the Gabon goal on the hour mark but he was flagged offside.

Vahid Halilhodzic mixed things up introducing fresh legs as they chase the match. Substitute Boufal won and dispatched a penalty to draw level 20 minutes from time.

Gabon regained their lead ten minutes from time through a brilliant Boupendza strike. The forward latched on to Allevinah’s pull back to beat Monir and give Gabon a 2-1 advance.

The Atlas Lions were not out of it as they draw level for the second time through Hakima’s sumptuous free kick late to guarantee top spot in the group.

Morocco finish the group with 7 points two more than Gabon in second with while debutants Comoros move to third with 3 points and Ghana bottom with a point.

What they said after the game

Jim Allevinah (Man of the Match TotalEnergies):

“We showed a lot of solidarity and value. We are happy to achieve our goal. The draw is a good result for us against a good team from Morocco.”

Patrice Neveu (Coach, Gabon):

“My team had the match they needed. The players followed the guidelines well. We thought we would win the match but this draw is still good, which allows us to continue the adventure. We would have liked to take the three points but it is football. In the round of 16 against Burkina Faso, it will be a difficult game against a team that plays well.”

Vahid Halilhodzic (Coach, Morocco):

“We knew the match was going to be difficult. We were behind and my players were able to come back to score twice. We dominated but we lacked inspiration and success. I am satisfied with my players and their reaction. We have achieved our goal with first place in Group C.”

Comoros Sink Ghana In historic Record Win

0

The Comoros beat Ghana 3-2 at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium on Tuesday in the third and final day of Group C, rekindling their hopes. Ghana are officially out of the competition after a game full of emotion and drama.

The Comoros have now three points (3), moving from fourth position to third, just behind Gabon, second with five points and will have to wait for the results of the other groups to advance as of the best third.

The Comoros who had not scored a single point before the match were theoretically out of the competition before the kickoff. The Southern-African representatives lost the first two matches respectively to Gabon (1-0) and Morocco (2-0).

The four-time African champions (Ghana) are one of the greatest powers in world football. Despite having won the CAN in four editions, Ghana is the team with the most finals lost in the competition (five). The Ghanaian national team lost the finals of 1968, 1970, 1992, 2010 and 2015.

Despite their lack of experience in front of the four-time champions Ghana, Comoros did not give enough time to breathe to their opponents. A quick counter-attacking move eventually led to the early goal from captain El-Fardou Mohamed (4′).

Ghana’s nightmare was just beginning! A serious foul by captain Andre Ayew on Comoros goalkeeper Boina Ben earned him a red card at the 23rd minute. Ayew was trying to take advantage of a rebound and ended up injuring the goalkeeper, who had to be replaced in the 24th minute by his colleague Ahamada Nadhoim.

The Comoros’ second goal came in the 61st minute through Ahmed Mogni, who broke through four defenders and slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Dramatic moments followed at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium. Ghana were levelled through Richmond Yiadom (63′) and defender Alaxander Djiku (76′). The goals revived the game and the Comoros took the lead again with the third goal scored by Ahmed Mogni (86′).

What they said

Amir Abdou (Coach, Comoros)

“We did not back down even after Ghana equalized. We always believed we could achieve a famous victory for our nation. I sent on attacking players in the belief that we could score a third goal and my decision paid off. Now we must wait to see if we are among the best four third-placed teams and play in the second round. We are satisfied with the way we played. We had a plan and stuck to it. We learnt from the mistakes we made in previous games.”

Milovan Rajevac (Coach, Ghana)

“I came to Ghana to qualify the team for the World Cup. That is my primary target. I will stay and lead the team in the March play-offs.”

Nigerian Film Industry: Ife Monarch Urges Stakeholders To Build On Legacies of Founders

0

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi has called on the stakeholders in the Nigerian film industry to endeavour to build on the legacies of those who laid the foundation of the industry.

The Ife monarch made the call while accepting his appointment as the first ever grand patron of the prestigious ZUMA film festival which is yearly organized by the Nigerian Film Corporation, NFC.

This was contained in a statement issued yesterday by Brian Etuk, NFC’s Director of Public Affairs, in Jos, Plateau State.

In his acceptance letter, the Ife monarch expressed willingness to explore the most practical alliances with the Nigerian Film Corporation in resetting the nation’s film industry as the bedrock of national identity, wealth creation and a viable export system.

According to the monarch, Nigeria must continue to unsettle the armchair and traditional mono economy reliance on crude oil, he further said the industry has the capacity and capabilities of regenerating the nation’s creative culture economy for accelerated development.

The Ife monarch, however, said that Nigeria’s film industry, from several years back has demonstrated its pragmatic and most dominant influence in the preservation of cultural heritages and identity, and is undoubtedly shaping the nation’s economy through the creation of jobs.

In paying tribute to the robust 21st century creative culture economy of the nation, Ooni of Ife said that stakeholders should continue to build on the legacies of those who laid the foundation for Nigeria’s film industry. “We must be pragmatic and create the most long term strategic approach to establishing film culture as the symbol of our national assets and the emblem of patriotism”, he said.

He commended NFC’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Dr. Chidia Maduekwe for his transformational leadership which has characterized the film agency’s unparalleled commitment towards the sustainable development of Nigeria’s film industry and driver of its modern creative culture, through the development of robust collaborative and partnership policies that encouraged Nollywood’s steady rise as the exporter of Nigeria’s rich stories beyond Africa.

Also, he hailed President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) for approving and directing the implementation of policies and programmes that are redefining the contributions of the film industry to nation building, including the recently launched National Development Plan – NDP 2021 – 2025.

Trains For Unbuilt Milwaukee-Madison High-Speed Rail Line Coming To Nigeria

0

Two trains originally intended for a high-speed rail line to connect Madison and Milwaukee are headed for Nigeria. The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu was in Milwaukee on Tuesday to purchase the unused trains.

The trains are set to become part of West Africa’s first operational metro system, according to a press release.

At a public event at the Milwaukee facilities of Spanish train manufacturer Talgo, acting Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson welcomed Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“It’s a little bittersweet,” Johnson said after the event. “I’m sending my congratulations to the governor in Lagos State in Nigeria, but also a little disappointed that we missed out on the opportunity to have those trainsets operating here in Milwaukee and in Wisconsin.”

It’s the latest turn in a decade-long saga revolving around high-speed rail, which Wisconsin Public Radio previously covered in the 2019 podcast series “Derailed.”

Milwaukee Alder Robert Bauman was not at the event, but said the ending is much like the entire storyline.

“It’s kind of an absurd ending to an absurd tale,” Bauman said.

In 2009, Wisconsin’s then-Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat, announced a deal with Talgo for two new trains to be built in the state and used for a high-speed rail line between Milwaukee and Madison. In the same year, Wisconsin was awarded $810 million for the project in a federal stimulus bill.

Frank Busalacchi was Wisconsin’s Secretary of Transportation at the time.

“I certainly didn’t expect what happened to happen,” said Busalacchi. “It was unfortunate, but I think now, as you look and see where the world is going, not just our country, where the world is going, it was the right thing to do.”

The plans died off after Republican Scott Walker became governor. But by 2012, Talgo had built the trains, and sent an invoice to the state for them. Later that year, Talgo terminated the contract and sued the state, kicking off a court dispute that lasted almost three years.

Ultimately, under the terms of a settlement between Wisconsin and Talgo, the state paid the company a total of $50 million for the trains, which remained under the company’s ownership.

“The partisanship got so deep that literally, Wisconsin is making decisions that amount to shooting yourself in both feet,” Bauman said. “Who buys a set of train cars, refuses to complete the contract, ends up getting sued, settles, pays out another $50-some million in damages, and then you don’t even get the cars?”

The trains sat unused in an Amtrak facility in Indiana for years, a lasting reminder of the dispute. They eventually returned to Talgo’s plant in Milwaukee in 2019.

“I’m glad that they were able now to sell them to somebody, that somebody is going to use them,” Busalacchi said. “The fact that after many years, Talgo’s found a buyer for the trains, I mean, kudos to them.”

Around when the trains came back to Milwaukee, Talgo spokespeople floated the possibility of the trains finding a use on Amtrak’s Cascades line in the Pacific Northwest, but last year Amtrak announced Siemens Mobility would produce new trains for the line instead.

“It is what it is,” Bauman said. “They’re moving on to Nigeria. Good for the Nigerians.”

The first phase of the Nigerian metro system the Talgo trains are set to become part of is expected to begin operation later this year, serving up to half a million passengers in the Lagos area daily.

Johnson said conversations about high-speed rail in Wisconsin have not gone away.

“I hope that at some point, we’re still able to realize that vision for a more connected community,” said Johnson.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger Says He Wants ‘To Expand God’s Kingdom’, Amid Retirement Rumors

0

Longtime quarterback Ben Roethlisberger may have played his final game with the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday night after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs 42-21 in the AFC’s wild-card round.

While Roethlisberger has not officially announced his retirement from the NFL, his post-game press conference implied that he was not returning next season.

“It’s tough,” he told reporters. “But I’m proud to play with these guys. God has blessed me with an ability to throw a football and has blessed me to play in the greatest city, in Pittsburgh, with the greatest fans and the greatest football team and players. It’s just been truly a blessing, and I’m so thankful to Him for the opportunity that He’s given me.”

When asked what’s next, Roethlisberger said he hopes to focus more on his family and serving God, according to reports.

“I’m going to do everything I can to be the best husband and father I can be and try and expand God’s Kingdom,” he said.

Despite Sunday’s loss, Roethlisberger holds a win in what was likely the final home game in his 18-season career. Earlier this month, The Steelers defeated the Cleveland Browns 26-14 at Heinz Field. After the game, Roethlisberger thanked God for giving him another great memory in Pittsburgh.

“I’m just so thankful for the fans, my family obviously. The good Lord has blessed me in so many ways,” he told ESPN following the game.

Roethlisberger, a Christian, has become more outspoken about his faith in recent years. At the end of the 2019 regular season, he shared his testimony with teammates and other members of the Steelers team.

A year later, Roethlisberger spoke at the annual ManUp Conference in 2020, which was held virtually.

“Three years ago, I got baptized,” he said at the conference. “I was baptized as a kid; my parents took me as a baby. But I didn’t make that decision. So three years ago now, I made the decision to be baptized because I felt like I needed to do that. I wanted to have a closer walk, a better relationship with Jesus, with my wife, with my kids, with my family — become a better person.”

“So I think the person that brought me to Him was Jesus,” he continued. “Jesus is the One who brought me back to Him, and I’m so thankful for it because I feel I’m a better Christian, a better husband and a better father today because of His forgiveness of me.”

Roethlisberger, 39, was drafted by the Steelers in 2004 after playing college football at Miami University. If he decides to step away from the NFL for good, Roethlisberger will end his career with multiple accolades, including two Superbowl victories and leading the NFL in passing yards twice (2014, 2018). He is also a six-time Pro-Bowler.

According to Sports Center, Roethlisberger would finish his career with the 3rd most 4th quarter comebacks in NFL history, and the 5th most wins as a starting quarterback.

US Secretary Of State Flies To Europe Amid Russia-Ukraine Invasion Worries

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken travels to Europe Wednesday amid mounting fears that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could be imminent.

Blinken is set to hold discussions with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, before meeting with his British, French and German counterparts in Berlin.

Blinken is scheduled to meet Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva on Friday.

Russia has repeatedly denied any plans to launch an attack on neighbouring Ukraine.

However on Tuesday senior US officials said that Moscow could launch an invasion at “any point”.

The White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters during a press briefing, that Russia’s buildup of tens of thousands of troops near its border with Ukraine had created an “extremely dangerous situation”.

Psaki said that “no option is off the table” to avoid conflict breaking out and added that “what Secretary Blinken is going to go do is highlight very clearly there is a diplomatic path forward”.

The top US diplomat is also expected to seek to shore up support among Western allies to impose what officials called “massive consequences and severe economic costs on Russia” should an invasion occur.

President Buhari Never Directed Fuel Subsidy Removal – Senate President

0

Nigeria’s Senate President Ahmed Lawan on Tuesday said President Muhammadu Buhari had not directed anyone in his government to implement the removal of petroleum subsidy.

Lawan, who spoke with newsmen yesterday after a closed-door meeting with Buhari at the State House, Abuja Nigeria’s capital said he was in the villa to convey the feeling of his constituents on the planned fuel subsidy removal and other issues to the president.

However, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) expressed support for the federal government’s plan to end fuel subsidy payments in the country.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, had announced last October that the federal government made provision for petrol subsidy only for the first six months of 2022, as the government looked towards complete deregulation of the sector.

But commenting on the issue, Lawan said the federal legislators were worried about the different agitation and planned protests around the country, necessitating the discussion with the President.

According to him, the subsidy cannot be transferred to citizens even as he expressed doubts on the 100 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) said to be consumed per day in the country.

The Senate President said he was glad to inform Nigerians that Buhari had not told anyone to remove petroleum subsidy.

African Development Bank Support Mozambique for Agro-Industrial Processing

0

The African Development Bank (ADB) has approved a grant of US$47 million for Mozambique’s Pemba-Lichinga Integrated Development Corridor.

The development corridor, running across northern Mozambique, is a Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone intended to stimulate agricultural production and help small scale farmers to move out of subsistence farming through providing infrastructure, marketing, and training.

According to a statement from the Bank, the grant will support the first phase of the project which will improve agricultural productivity and agribusiness development in the Northern province of Niassa and will focus on institutional capacity, skills, and entrepreneurship to spur growth in the agricultural value chain.

The project will also pilot improved policy and development coordination between the authorities in Niassa province and national departments, especially with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Commenting on the approval of the grant by the Bank’s board of directors, Minister of Industry and Trade, Carlos Mesquita, described the project as a “game-changer” that would transform the economy, promote social inclusion, and foster peace by tackling important factors such as development infrastructure.

The Bank’s Country Manager for Mozambique, Cesar Augusto Mba Abogo, highlighted the importance of Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones as a shared facility to enable agricultural producers, processors, aggregators, and distributors to operate in the same neighbourhood to reduce transaction costs, share business development services and increase productivity and competitiveness.

The African Development Bank financed its first project in Mozambique in 1977 and since then has focussed on supporting projects covering agriculture, transport, water and sanitation, energy, communications, mining, and finance.
