Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Quinoa

0

Quinoa has gained popularity as a health food in most parts of the world, though people have been cultivating it in South America since ancient times. In fact, hundreds of years ago, the Inca people considered this ancient grain a sacred food.

In the past couple of decades, quinoa popularity has grown exponentially as the demand for easy-to-grow, nutritious, gluten-free grain alternatives has soared.

Not only is quinoa nutrient-dense, but it may offer health benefits,

Packed With Nutrients

Quinoa is a grain crop grown for its edible seeds. These seeds are what we call quinoa — pronounced KEEN-wah.

Although it’s usually lumped in with cereal grains, like oats and barley, quinoa is actually a pseudo-cereal grain.

In other words, it is basically a seed that is prepared and eaten similarly to a grain. Other examples of pseudo-cereal grains include buckwheat and amaranth.

There are many types of quinoa, including red, black, and white.

Here is the nutrient breakdown for 1 cup (185 grams) of cooked quinoa:

Calories: 222, Protein: 8 grams, Fat: 3.55 grams, Carbohydrates: 39 grams, Fiber: 5 grams, Folate: 19% of the daily value (DV), Vitamin B6: 13% of the DV, Vitamin E: 8% of the DV, Copper: 39% of the DV, Iron: 15% of the DV, Zinc: 18% of the DV, Manganese: 51% of the DV, Magnesium: 28% of the DV, Potassium: 7% of the DV, Phosphorus: 22% of the DV

Quinoa is a good source of a number of important nutrients, including folate, magnesium, zinc, and iron.

It’s also rich in fiber and protein, nutrients that play an important role in helping you feel full.

Higher In Fiber Than Many Grains

Another important benefit of quinoa is its high fiber content.

A 1-cup (185-gram) serving of cooked quinoa contains 5.18 grams of fiber. That’s about 18% of the current 28-gram DV. Quinoa contains more fiber than several other popular grains, like brown rice.

For example, a 1-cup (195-gram) serving of cooked brown rice contains 3.51 grams of fiber, which is 1.67 grams less than the same serving size of quinoa.

Adding fiber-rich foods like quinoa into your diet can help support your digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and fueling beneficial bacteria in your gut.

Plus, eating a high fiber diet can support a body weight that’s healthy for you. Fiber helps promote feelings of fullness. Pairing high fiber foods like quinoa with high protein foods can help you feel full and may help keep your portion sizes in check .

Gluten-Free And Great For People With Gluten Intolerance

Some people with gluten intolerance, including those with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity, need to avoid foods containing gluten.

People following a gluten-free diet need to choose gluten-free alternatives to gluten-containing grains like wheat, barley, and rye.

Quinoa is naturally gluten-free and makes a nutritious choice for people who want to or need to cut gluten from their diet.

Unlike gluten-free products made with refined ingredients, quinoa is a good source of nutrients that gluten-free diets often lack, like: fiber, folate, zinc, magnesium

A Good Source Of Protein

Quinoa is a good source of protein, providing 8 grams per cooked cup (185 grams).

Quinoa is often referred to as a complete protein. This is because it contains all nine of the essential amino acids that your body can’t make on its own.

However, experts argue that quinoa should not be considered a complete protein because it contains low amounts of certain amino acids, like lysine.

For this reason, experts have suggested that quinoa be considered a “nearly complete” protein, not a complete protein.

Either way, quinoa is a good source of protein and incorporating quinoa into your diet can help you meet your daily protein needs.

This is especially true for those who follow plant-based diets, like vegans. You can make a plant-based, protein-rich meal in no time by combining quinoa with beans, tofu, and mixed vegetables.

May Have Beneficial Effects On Metabolic Health

Some studies suggest that eating quinoa could benefit certain aspects of health.

A 2020 study in 40 older adults had participants eat 0.5 ounces (15 grams) of quinoa flour biscuits daily for 28 days.

By the end of the study, the participants who ate the quinoa biscuits had significantly greater reductions in LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, and body weight than those who ate wheat-based biscuits.

Additionally, studies have found that eating quinoa and quinoa-based products may benefit blood sugar regulation, fullness, body weight and triglyceride levels.

A 2017 study that included 50 people with excess weight or obesity had participants consume 1.8 ounces (50 grams) of quinoa daily for 12 weeks.

Those who ate the quinoa had significant reductions in triglyceride levels compared with the control group and a group that consumed 0.88 ounces (25 grams) of quinoa per day.

Even though these results suggest that quinoa has a positive effect on metabolic health, it’s your diet and lifestyle as a whole that matter most when it comes to decreasing your risk of disease.

Following a dietary pattern rich in nutritious foods like quinoa, vegetables, fruits, fish, and beans is a smart way to protect your health and reduce disease risk factors, like high blood lipid levels and high blood sugar levels.

Now Let’s give you a bonus on How to Quinoa

It can be ready to eat in as little as 15–20 minutes. To cook it:

Rinse 1 cup (170 grams) quinoa thoroughly using a fine mesh strainer.

Put 2 cups (240 mL) water in a pot and turn the heat to high.

Add rinsed quinoa with a dash of salt.

Boil 15–20 minutes.

Enjoy.

It should now have absorbed most of the water and gotten a fluffy look. If done right, it should have a mild, nutty flavor and a satisfying crunch.

You can easily find many diverse recipes for quinoa online, including breakfast bowls, lunches, and dinners.

Quinoa Bowl

You can use quinoa in both sweet and savory recipes.

For example, you can try making a savory quinoa and vegetable salad topped with feta and grilled chicken. Or make a sweet breakfast porridge with cooked quinoa, coconut milk, fresh fruit, walnuts, cinnamon, and a drizzle of honey.

Take Home

Quinoa is fast becoming popular among the fit fam folks and it highly nutritious

It’s technically a seed and is considered part of a small group of grains called pseudo-cereals, along with amaranth and buckwheat.

It’s a smart carbohydrate choice because it’s rich in fiber, minerals, antioxidants, and protein. It’s also gluten-free, delicious, versatile, and incredibly easy to prepare.

Quinoa is a great carb option to include in your diet.

Health Benefits of Drinking Aloe Vera Juice

0

The aloe vera plant is a succulent plant species from the genus Aloe. It grows abundantly in tropical climates and has been used for centuries as a medicinal plant.

Aloe vera juice is a gooey, thick liquid made from the flesh of the aloe vera plant leaf. Historically, it’s been used both topically and orally.

Some have praised the potential health benefits of aloe vera when consumed as juice or in other forms. Let’s check out some of these benefits.

Contains Antioxidants

Based on test-tube studies, it’s thought that the aloe plant boasts anti-inflammatory properties. That’s why many people use it to treat and relieve certain skin conditions, like burns and wounds. Its proposed anti-inflammatory activity is thanks to polyphenols, a group of antioxidant-rich plant compounds.

Antioxidants help protect your body from damage caused by free radicals — also known as oxidative stress. Research has shown that chronic oxidative stress can increase the risk of some health conditions, including heart disease and even some cancers.

May help treat skin conditions and improve skin appearance

Aloe Vera Plant

Aloe vera is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties, making it a potential treatment for burns and other skin disorders like atopic dermatitis. Many of the benefits of aloe vera on skin health are seen when it’s applied topically, rather than consumed as a drink. Still, limited research on oral aloe vera supplements does exist. One study found that taking 40 mcg of aloe sterol per day for 12 weeks improved skin elasticity in a group of men under age 46. Another study similarly found that consuming aloe vera improved collagen production and reduced the appearance of wrinkles in a group of women over age 40. It’s important to note that in both of these studies, aloe was consumed as a supplement, not juice. Additionally, while this research is promising, it’s not conclusive and more human trials are needed.

May be beneficial to Diabetes treatment

Research has indicated that both the gel and juice from aloe vera may lower fasting blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Further, another study observed that aloe juice improved both blood sugar and blood fatty acid levels in those with pre-diabetes. While this sounds promising, research is limited. Larger, randomized, and controlled trials are needed to confirm the relationship between aloe vera juice and blood sugar control.

Additionally, aloe vera extract supplements are not standardized, regulated, or considered a safe alternative treatment for diabetes.

May help with digestive issues

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera juice contains anthraquinone glycosides. These are plant compounds with laxative effects that could help relieve constipation. However, research on this topic is outdated and the safety of using aloe vera juice to treat constipation is unknown.

In 2002, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) no longer approved aloe vera laxatives for over-the-counter sales, as they haven’t been tested to confirm their safety and efficacy. Some preliminary research suggests that aloe vera syrup could help treat and reduce the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Other early research shows promising results for using aloe vera extract to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Ultimately, while it’s possible that aloe vera may have digestive benefits, there’s not yet enough research indicating the safety or dosage of its use for these purposes.

May improve dental and oral health

Some animal studies suggest that aloe vera offers antibacterial properties and could support the treatment of some dental and oral conditions.

Plus, a study in 74 people with oral submucous fibrosis — a chronic condition that causes pain and inflammation in the mouth — showed that taking 1 ounce (30 mL) of aloe vera juice twice daily for 3 months was as effective as traditional treatments like hydrocortisone injections.

Another study found that an aloe vera mouthwash effectively reduced the severity and pain related to oral mucositis — a common side effect of chemotherapy and radiation treatments — in individuals with head and neck cancers.

Further, a study in 64 people with cancer found that using an aloe vera mouthwash solution 3 times daily for 14 days helped reduce the occurrence and associated pain of chemotherapy-induced stomatitis, which is an infection in the mouth. It’s also speculated that aloe vera mouthwash could help reduce dental plaque and manage pain and swelling following oral surgery. Although more long-term data is needed, these studies indicate that aloe vera juice could offer an alternative approach to treatments for certain dental and oral conditions.

Aloe Vera juice considerations

Generally, aloe vera juice can be consumed as a drink, while the gel is often applied topically.

It’s a good idea to talk with a healthcare professional before trying anything new when it comes to your diet and health including adding aloe vera juice or supplements to your routine.

This is especially true if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding as the safety of aloe vera products remains unknown in these groups.

Similarly, be sure to review aloe vera supplements or juices with your doctor first if you’re taking any medications to avoid possible interactions.

Take Home

Aloe vera is commonly known as a topical gel used to treat sunburn. Promisingly, it may also provide other health benefits, largely due to its antioxidant properties.

Preliminary research has indicated that aloe vera may benefit your skin, dental, oral, and digestive health. It may even improve blood sugar control. However, more long-term data from human clinical trials is needed to confirm these benefits.

Be sure to talk with a healthcare professional before trying any aloe vera products, especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications.

UNIJOS Leases Council Guest House To Firm For 20Years

0

The Vice Chancellor of University of Jos, Professor Ishaya Tanko has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Royal Choice Inn Limited to lease out an old University’s Council Guest House to the company.

He noted that the company, which is being managed by a developer, would remodel the guest house to meet global standard and construct a befitting world class hotel at the location for public use.

The vice chancellor signed the MoU on behalf of the institution while the Chairman of Royal Choice Inn Limited, Felix Akiga, signed for the company at the vice chancellor’s board room.

Tanko said that the MoU would last for 20 years after which the university would take over the property. He described Akiga as a developer, stakeholder and friend of the university who has contributed immensely to infrastructural and social wellbeing of the institution.

He said: “We are happy as a university for the signing of this Memoranda of Understanding. I am privileged to be the person signing this MoU and this is the first of its kind as far as we know in the University of Jos.

“I wish to recognise my predecessors who initiated the project; Professor Hayward Mafuwai started it and worked with Professor Nelson Ochekpe, who is here seated. When Professor Sabastine Maimako saw the beauty of the concept, he worked towards achieving it in 2020 but because of the pandemic, it wasn’t possible.”

He added that during the period of Maimako, he served as Vice Chancellor Academic and witnessed all the committees that were set up with the legal team and physical facilities units to ensure they reached an agreeable and acceptable with all the terms.

The vice chancellor explained that the university is not going to be responsible for the finances that would be used for the remodeling and for the construction, but assured that the developer is expected to spend three years to rehabilitate and construct the hotel, which he would use for 20 years and then hand over the facilities completely to the university.

Akiga, who spoke earlier, described the university as a home and said he would contribute his quota towards improving infrastructural facilities in the university.

He noted that the facility would be rehabilitated and a world class hotel would be constructed to house staff and guests of the university and for people outside the institution.

He said that the university was going to gain a lot from the exercise because it will create tourism and leisure management to hotel staff and it will give the university the opportunity to create entrepreneurial courses.

Akiga also donated N200,000 and volleyball kits to the university to commence preparation for the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) in Lagos this year. He promised to employ a volleyball coach for the institution and present a prize of N1 million to the team if they win the competition.

Mälkki Could Be First Woman Music Director Of NY Philharmonic

0

Her arms at her side against her glimmering, long black jacket and her blond hair pulled into a ponytail, Susanna Mälkki soaked in several minutes of applause after a thrilling Carnegie Hall debut. She had conducted the New York Philharmonic in a program, perceived as a possible prelude to becoming the first woman music director of an orchestra that started in 1842.

“Of course, it’s always an honor to be mentioned in this kind of context,” she said during an interview the day before the Jan. 6 performance. “It’s really, really fun to be with the orchestra. But the `l’actualité,′ as they say in French: This something that the orchestra will take their time. They will try out a lot of people.”

Musicians beamed as the audience erupted following the Philharmonic’s first Carnegie Hall appearance in six years, broadcast live on radio. Leelanee Sterrett, the acting associate principal horn, detected a “focused energy” that Mälkki brought to the podium and called it “one of those performances where in the concert everything was kind of taken up a notch, dialed up a notch.”

A native of Finland who turns 53 on March 13, Mälkki studied at the Sibelius Academy and London’s Royal Academy of Music, and she was mentored by Esa-Pekka Salonen.

U.N Says School Feeding Programme Boosts School Enrollment Across Nigeria

0

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) says the National Home-Grown School Feeding programme (NHGSFP) has significantly increased school enrollment across Nigeria.

According to the World Food Programme as at 2021, the initiative has served school meals to over 9 million students in 53,000 public primary schools, which makes it one of the largest school feeding programmes in Africa.

As schools reopen across the country, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (FMHADMSD) with technical support from the World Food Programme has announced it would take the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme to the next stage.

This decision results from a joint assessment conducted in the first quarter of 2021 to identify ways of improving, scaling-up and sustaining the NHGSFP.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Sadiya Farouq said the programme remains an important intervention of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

She noted that through the programme hunger, malnutrition, poverty, education can all be addressed and it is an investment that is fully funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria because of its sheer potential as a development driver.

The WFP Country Director Ronald Sibanda, while commending the Nigerian government explained that one of the best ways of fighting hunger and preventing malnutrition among children is to provide them with a healthy school meal.

Home Grown School Feeding initiatives promote nutrition education and better eating habits and encourage the diversification of production with a special emphasis on local crops.

The WFP is backing the next stage with a significant transfer of ICT equipment. This includes tablets with access to the PLUS Schools Menus – a free tool to help state Nutrition Officers design nutritious menus for schools.

The hardware will not only support the Ministry’s efforts to digitize its monitoring and evaluation system, but also enable the national roll out of the PLUS School Menu Tool developed by WFP to standardize cost-effective menu development.

The programme according to the WFP has provided a much-needed boost to local economies by buying the products of smallholder farmers and providing jobs to more than 107,000 cooks from low-income families.

Schools provide local farmers with a predictable outlet for their products, leading to a stable income, more investments and higher productivity. The children enjoy healthy, diversified food; this makes it more likely that they will stay in school, perform better, and improve their adult job prospects.

In line with one of the key pillars for sustaining the NHGSFP, several partnerships have been realised across various relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Government, which have truly strengthened the collaboration and cooperation for a more effective service delivery.

Key partners include the National Youth Service Corp, Ministries of Agriculture, of Education, Information, Trade and Industry, Water Resources amongst others.

AFCON 2021: Eguavoen Reveals Tactics Against Egypt, Makes Statement Of Intent

0

The Super Eagles kicked off their AFCON campaign in spectacular fashion, defeating Egypt with a dominant display

Super Eagles boss Augustine Eguavoen has revealed that keeping possession and cutting Mohamed Salah’s supplies was the key to beating the Pharaohs in their opening game of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria cruised to a 1-0 victory at the Stade Omnisport Roumde Adija thanks to a wonderful gaol from Kelechi Iheanacho.

However, Iheanacho’s strike was not the only notable thing in the game. Nigeria dominated the game, bossing possession and creating more clear chances than the Pharaohs.

The Egyptians were like passengers on the pitch as they could not offer anything going forward. Queiroz’s men were outplayed, and if not for the brilliance of Mohamed El Shenawy in goal, the scoreline could have been embarrassing.

Eguavoen has now revealed that Nigeria’s display was the product of a proper game plan.

“We tried to play high pressure at every given time. We know we can mix it up by ball possession and going direct when necessary,” Eguavoen said after the game.

“So we have three things in mind, first the mission was to win the game, and how do we win the game? The process is keeping the ball and then keeping Salah, try to cut him off the game.

He also affirmed the team’s commitment, stating that they would approach every game with a serious mindset.

“We are gonna approach every game like it’s a final, so we gonna take it game after game and see where we get to because every team that has come to AFCON should be respected regardless of the name of the country.”

“There are no minnows anymore in football, so if you don’t plan or put in effort, you can be shocked.”

“So I don’t know who’s gonna win, but we will try with our own ways to approach every game with all seriousness”, he added.
