Amend TETFUND Act to Accommodate Private Varsities- VC to NASS

0

Vice-Chancellor, Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, Prof. Timothy Adebayo, has called for amendment of the law establishing Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to accommodate private universities in the country.

He made the appeal at a news conference held on Monday in Oyo, ahead of the convocation ceremony of the institution.

Ajayi Crowther University ACU, a faith-based institution, was established by the Supra Diocesan Board (West) of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) with a total of 990 students graduated in 2019/2020, out of whom 51 made first class, while 1,165 graduated in the 2020/2021 session, with 34 making first class.

Adebayo called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly (NASS) to amend the law to allow private universities benefit from the fund.

While identifying funding as a major challenge facing private universities in Nigeria, he said that the staffers and students of private universities should not be deprived the right to benefit from public funds.

The vice-chancellor noted that private universities also needed subvention to help them alleviate the pressure on public universities in terms of admission.

Adebayo said that private universities had been helping to mitigate the pressure on public universities but were, however, hampered by funding.

He said that most of them were not receiving subvention from any other source outside the tuition fee being paid by the students and donations from philanthropists.

“As at last count, Nigeria has 99 private universities. Giving them subvention will alleviate the funding problem and mitigate the fee being charged.

“Education is one of the vital tools that cannot be totally privatised,” he explained.

Earlier, the vice-chancellor said that the special and combined convocation ceremony would feature inauguration of completed projects at the institution.

Adebayo said that the combined 12th and 13th convocation ceremony, which commenced on Nov. 27, would end on Dec. 4.

According to him, the award of diploma and first degree will hold on Dec. 3, while that of postgraduate and honorary degrees hold on Dec. 4

The honourable minister of youths and sports development, Sunday Dare has flag off 26th edition of Nigerian University Games Association, NUGA 2022 with the lighting of the NUGA Torch of Unity.

Dare also unveiled the Games’ mascot, christened “Kaddi”, which he said highlights the coexistence of sports and education.

“I am glad that through the effort of the school’s vice chancellor and his team, UNILAG will be hosting the 26th edition of the NUGA Games. That will give our younger generation, the youth, who are the students’ opportunity to compete in about 28 different sports,” he said.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports will be watching through our 38 different sports federations the talents, stars that NUGA 2022 will produce. And then, we will take them up and serve them to the world to represent Nigeria at the All African Games, Commonwealth Games, Olympics, and other international competitions.

“We thank the President for reclassifying sports as business. Before, sports was mere a creation, but in Nigeria today, sports is business. So, through the value chain of sports, as an athlete, as medical personnel, as a writer, as broadcaster; sports is alive in this country now,” he added.

Also speaking, the UNILAG’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, thanked the minister for motivating the University management to bid for the hosting rights of the NUGA Games.

Ogundipe said the games would serve as a means of transform sports in Nigeria.

He, however, asked individuals, philanthropists, industry chiefs, corporate organisations and various state governments to join hands with the university by supporting financially and in kind to make the event a huge success.

The flag off, which took place at JF Ade Ajayi auditorium, was fully attended by academics, musicians and students respectively.

2022 UTME: JAMB To Adopt Cashless Policy For Registration Process

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will adopt the cashless policy in the registration process for 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Board said with the adoption of the new system, it would be collecting the approved N700 registration fee on behalf of the various Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers along with its UTME registration fees.

It said the money due to each registration centre would be remitted to relevant bank accounts on a weekly basis or any timeframe acceptable to the centre owners.

JAMB made this known via its weekly bulletin obtained by local news media.

The Board said its decision to go cashless in the UTME registration exercise would put an end to some of the fraudulent activities of some CBT centres, who charge candidates above stipulated fee.

In the previous years, candidates pay the sum of N700 at the centres. However, with the new policy, candidates simply walk into any registration centre and register without paying any amount as the fee hitherto payable to the centre had been paid along with the cost of obtaining the e-PINS.

Meanwhile, the examination body said it generated N141.2 million between 20 November and 26 November 2021.

Get appropriate treatment for vaginal infections, gynaecologist tells women

A Gynecologist at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Dr. Nathaniel Adewole, has advised Nigerian women to apply appropriate medication for the treatment of vaginal infections.

Adewole told Newsmen on Sunday that the best way to treat infection was to run laboratory tests before embarking on any form of treatment.

Adewole said that using local herbal concoctions, either for drinking or steaming was not the best way to treat vaginal infections.

According to him, for instance, Urinary Tract Infection occurs naturally like a boil and can spread within days or weeks depending on the cause and the nature of the infections.

Adewole added that bladder stone could also cause UTI, adding that retaining urine for too long could cause vaginal infection.

“Who knows the active ingredients in that combination, how toxic it is for the body.

“How are we sure it is not all the herbal mixture that is causing the high increase of cancer.

“Not knowing the right dosage and which toxic substance will cause harm in the body.

“The steaming is even more dangerous, but both still has their danger,” he said.

Adewole said that anything taken into the body should be regulated, adding that if not regulated, it could be very dangerous to the body.

“We cause some of the dangers to ourselves without knowing,” he said.

Adewole said that he always advised people not to use things they know nothing about just because someone else had used it.

Ethiopia’s central bank has lifted a suspension of lending by commercial banks to their customers using collateral such as property, the bank said on Monday.

The economy has been shaken by a conflict that has lasted more than a year pitting Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s national army against rebellious forces from the northern region of Tigray.

When the suspension was imposed in mid-August, the government said it took the measure due to “economic sabotage”, without giving further details.

The restriction has now been “fully lifted”, the central bank’s communications department told Reuters, without providing more details.

Congo okays joint operation with Uganda against Islamist militia, sources say

Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has agreed to a joint operation with Uganda’s army against Islamist rebels accused of suicide bombings in Kampala this month, two diplomatic sources said.

The Islamic State said their local affiliate, known as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), were behind a Nov. 16 attack which killed seven people, including the three bombers, and injured dozens more.

News reports about the proposed cross-border campaign, which is yet to be announced publicly, has sparked anxiety amongst some Congolese, who recall Uganda’s role in the brutal civil wars that ended in 2003.

Tshisekedi informed the United Nations peacekeeping mission on Friday he had authorised military cooperation with Uganda against the ADF, but did not provide any further details, a senior U.N. diplomat said.

The second diplomatic source said the same, but also had no more details.
