FG to establish special courts for sexual, gender-based violence

0

The Federal Government is set to establish special courts to prosecute cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and ensure quick dispensation of justice for victims and survivors.

Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Pauline Tallen, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday at a media briefing commemorating the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

The event has as its theme: “Orange the world: End violence against women now!”

Tallen said that with intense advocacy many survivors of rape and Gender-based violence had made the violation of their rights public and were seeking legal and judicial assistance.

She, however, said that the lack of survivor-sensitive approaches in court was a major challenge.

According to the minister, the limited number of courts compared to the large volume of cases, geographical distance to the nearest court, language used in courts and rising cases of secondary victimisation, had contributed to the lack of confidence in the criminal justice system by women who are subjected to violence.

From available statistics from the National Situation Room and Dashboard as of Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021, the total number of cases reported is 5,204.

“Of the figure, 3,125 survivors are demanding justice and only 33 perpetrators have so far been convicted, representing 0.51 percent.

“The fatal cases are 160, closed cases 231, while cases pending in court are 972,” she added.

According to the minister, the ministry has initiated the process of establishing special courts for vulnerable groups.

She added that the ministry would continue to push until it achieved the desired goal of providing legislative backing to punish perpetrators and get justice for victims and survivors.

Also, Ms. Comfort Lamptey, UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS stressed the need to strengthen a collective response system that would effectively and promptly provide support to victims and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

Lamptey explained that Gender-based violence was pervasive and as such preventive efforts were pivotal through addressing harmful practices and norms that belittled the rights of women and girls.

She urged men to join in the fight to end the practice.

EU Country Representative to Nigeria, Ms. Samuela Isopi, while decrying the high rate of Gender-based violence cases, described it as a “shadow pandemic“ and called for political will and advocacy to stop the trend.

“This year’s activism in Nigeria is geared towards coordinated efforts for a special court in fighting Gender-based violence cases.”

Assistant Inspector General of Police, Aisha Abubakar, reiterated the commitment of the force to be more gender-responsive and ensure that all Gender-based violence cases were investigated and perpetrators prosecuted.

Dr. Natalia Kanem, UN-SUG and Executive Director, UNFPA, said available data indicate that the prevalence of Gender-based violence was high and stressed the need for the rehabilitation of survivors.

An expert, Moshood Olaniyan, has tasked government to motivate Nigerian-owned shipping companies to train young marine engineers for effective service delivery.

Speaking at the orientation programme for fresh students of the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine College, Lagos, Olaniyan noted that the major challenge facing marine engineers locally is lack of training opportunities for fresh graduates.

In his lecture titled: ‘Career prospects, opportunities and challenges for the marine engineer in 21st century maritime industry, Olaniyan, a marine engineer, also expressed concern over poor technological advancement in the sector.

He noted that most companies prefer people with experience, depriving fresh graduates’ opportunity for training and learning on the job.

Olaniyan lamented that most of the ships currently operating in the country are owned by foreigners.

In his words, “In this industry, government needs to ensure that we give training opportunities to young graduates for effective service delivery, while motivating Nigerian-owned shipping companies to train young marine engineers”.

While expressing concern over the Nation’s poor technology advancement, Olaniyan said marine engineers must study more and learn new things.

The deputy provost, administration, Dr. Muhammad Enaikele, said the college is a foremost institute that runs an integrated programme of fisheries and maritime courses.

Enaikele said the college was set up in 1969 with a mandate to train students in core courses related to fisheries and maritime disciplines.

“Since its establishment, the college has grown over time and today, we can beat our chest that we have over 75 per cent of our products in the Nigeria territorial water,” he said.

Enaikele noted that the orientation is a programme to formally sensitise students on the activities of the college and what is expected of them.

“The orientation is like a formal induction into the college. We have a lot of problems such as cultism, drug abuse and sexual harassment plaguing our campuses, so the programme was aimed at educating them on the need to abstain from such,” Enaikele added.

Ex-ASUU President, Ogunyemi Kicks Against Creation of New Varsities

A former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, has said Nigeria doesn’t need new universities, urging the Federal Government to stop approving new tertiary institutions.

He asked the Federal Government to rather focus on rehabilitating the existing ones so that they can deliver quality education to the citizens.

Ogunyemi said this on Wednesday, during a symposium to celebrate a former President of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Sam Akindele, in Abuja.

Lamenting the deterioration in the country’s education sector, the university teacher urged the government to focus on making the existing institutions work.

Ogunyemi, who spoke during the panel discussion argued that, “Nigeria doesn’t need new universities.  The structures we are operating, how well are they positioned to deliver? We are talking of establishing more institutions whereas they are not catering for the existing ones. Who is deceiving who?

“Go to the National Assembly now; you can be sure they have nothing less than 30 bills proposing new colleges of education; not less than 50 bills proposing new universities, polytechnics and so on. Is that what we need?

“How well are the existing institutions delivering? It means those who are there are not connected with the system.” He cries.

Australian Open: Novak Djokovic ‘Will Not Want To Miss’ Shot At Record 21st Grand Slam Win

0

Novak Djokovic will not want to miss the chance to win a record 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, says tournament director Craig Tiley.

The Serb is level on 20 Grand Slam wins with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

“One of them will surpass the others. I don’t think Novak would want to leave that to someone else,” said Tiley.

“Novak has won nine Australian Opens, I’m sure he wants to get to 10.”

The tournament runs from 17-30 January in Melbourne and last month Djokovic said he was uncertain if he would play.

Tiley has spoken to the world number one but is still unaware if he has been vaccinated against Covid-19.

He said that currently 85% of professional players are vaccinated and he expects that figure to be “between 90-95%” by the time of the event at Melbourne Park, where fans and staff will also be banned if unvaccinated.

Tiley said there were “one or two players” who had medical exemptions which are in line with Victoria’s state health rules.

“And so it should be, because there shouldn’t be any preferential treatment coming into the state compared to what the regular community is going through,” he said.

Tennis Australia has also announced there will be a record 17 warm-up events staged across the states of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, mostly in the respective state capitals of Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

They begin with the ATP Cup team competition, which returns to Sydney from 1-9 January.

Federal Govt. To Reposition 110 Unity Colleges for Optimal Performance

0

Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has announced plans by the Federal Government to reposition the 110 unity colleges across the country for optimum performance.

Nwajiuba, who stated this while declaring open the 2021 annual general meeting of Principals of Unity Colleges in Gombe, said the Federal Government is determined to bring back quality and standard to the colleges.

In his opening speech titled: “Repositioning federal unity colleges” the minister said President Muhammadu Buhari has set the ball rolling through a bumper welfare package for teachers, which he approved last year.

The package, the minister said, include, extension of length of service, new salary structure, automatic employment to deserving graduates, a new housing programme and pension scheme among others.

Nwajiuba said government is committed to restoring the past glory of the colleges through adequate funding, strict supervision and re-evaluation of the entire system.

Sounding a note of caution, the minister said government would not spare any officer found wanting under the new dispensation, as such officers would be shown the way out of service, adding that change has come into the education sector for good.

He also stressed the need for training and retraining to prepare teachers for the unfolding dispensation, which is fast ushering in new developments that will contribute to the evolution of a strong and sovereign nation.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono, said the meeting is an avenue to address issues of crucial importance to the growth and development of quality education in federal unity colleges.

Echono said with quality education, deviant behaviours caused by complex interactions can be effectively tackled.

Former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o has been cleared to stand in elections to be the next president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot).

A total of six candidates, including incumbent Seidou Mbombo Njoya, have been approved by Fecafoot’s electoral committee to stand in the polls on 11 December.

Another former international Jules Denis Onana is also eligible for the elections, however his 1990 World Cup team-mate Emmanuel Maboang Kessack was ruled out as he owes Fecafoot $7,600.

The other three names on the list of eligible candidates for president are Crepin Soter Nyamsi, Justin Tagouh and Zacharie Wandja.

One other person, Manuel Boyomo, has also been prevented from taking part in the polls because he failed to provide the required number of endorsement letters.

When Eto’o, 40, first announced his intentions September it was amid controversy in Cameroon after candidates with dual nationality had been told they could not stand in the elections.

Eto’o, who also had spells with Inter Milan and Chelsea, was granted dual Spanish nationality during his time at Barcelona.

The Victoria Falls, Zambia

0

Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

It was described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. In more modern terms Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world.

Columns of spray can be seen from miles away as, at the height of the rainy season, more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge, over a width of nearly two kilometres, into a gorge over one hundred meters below.

The wide, basalt cliff over which the falls thunder, transforms the Zambezi from a placid river into a ferocious torrent cutting through a series of dramatic gorges.

Facing the Falls is another sheer wall of basalt, rising to the same height, and capped by mist-soaked rain forest.

A path along the edge of the forest provides the visitor prepared to brave the tremendous spray, with an unparalleled series of views of the Falls.

One special vantage point is across the Knife-edge Bridge, where visitors can have the finest view of the Eastern Cataract and the Main Falls as well as the Boiling Pot, where the river turns and heads down the Batoka Gorge.
