South Africa claim betting spike during Ghana World Cup qualifying game

There was a clear pattern of match manipulation during South Africa’s 2022 World Cup qualifier against Ghana, according to South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan.

Ghana beat Bafana Bafana 1-0 on Sunday in the crucial qualifier – a result which saw the Black Stars advance to Africa’s play-offs for the tournament at the expense of the South Africans on goals scored.

Safa lodged a complaint with Fifa about the match and the world governing body, in a letter dated 17 November, said the protest will be submitted to a member of its disciplinary committee on 23 November for consideration.

South Africa’s protest included allegations of “match fixing, match manipulation including corruption and corruption”, which Jordaan claimed may be linked to gambling at a press conference on Wednesday.

US removes Nigeria from list of religious violators

The US has removed Nigeria from the list of religious violators, ahead of the visit by the Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the country.

The US government last year placed Nigeria on its special watch list of states that had engaged in or tolerated the severe violation of religious freedom

Nigeria is not in the 2021 list which has Myanmar, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Algeria, Comoros, Cuba, and Nicaragua are also on the special list of governments that have violated religious freedom, according to the US state department.

However, the jihadist groups Boko Haram and Iswap operating in north-east Nigeria, are still designated as entities of particular concern.

Mr Blinken is visiting Nigeria on Thursday on the second leg of his three-nation trip that includes Kenya and Senegal.

Fourteen shot dead in Sudan protests – doctors

0

Doctors in Sudan say 14 people have been shot dead by security forces as thousands took to the streets to protest against the recent military takeover.

Activists had called for mass demonstrations to mark the day when a civilian was supposed to assume the leadership of the governing Sovereign Council.

The man who led last month’s coup, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, dismissed the government, arrested dozens of politicians and named himself the head of a new Sovereign Council.

There is growing evidence of just how brutal the Sudanese security forces have been.

Doctors in the capital Khartoum say tear gas has been fired inside hospital buildings and soldiers have prevented some of the wounded from being treated.

Many arrests have taken place in neighbourhoods where the electricity had been switched off.

Comedian too cute for Nigeria navy detained

Popular Nigerian comedian Cute Abiola is not missing but in custody, the Navy has said.

The reason for his detention is unknown, his lawyer told BBC Pidgin.

Family members and friends last saw Cute Abiola – whose real name is Abdulgafar Ahmed – on Monday.

Social media users are speculating that a skit the comedian shared on Instagram wearing a navy uniform, carrying an AK-47 riffle and a bottle of alcohol, to depict trigger-happy military personnel could have landed him in trouble.

In a statement the Nigerian Navy said the comedian, who is a navy officer, is being held for “breaching the Armed Forces Social Media Policy and refusal to obey particular orders”.

The policy is in place to protect their personal safety and security, as well as the information integrity of the activities of the Armed Forces in Nigeria, the statement said.

NECO Withholds Over 80,000 Kano Students Result

0

Thousands of outgoing secondary school students in Kano state, may not be able to access admission into tertiary institutions because NECO has withheld their results due to the inability of the State Government to clear debts.

The post secondary school future of over 80,000 students in Kano state, hangs in the balance as the state government could not pay their NECO examination fees amounting to over N500 million.

According to report, 70% of the students who sat for the NECO examination in 2021,were sponsored by their parents, but till date there is no news of when the examination body will release their results.

This development has made rights organisations to put pressure on the government so that the chances of going to higher institutions of these students during this session,is not jeopardised.

Kano state is said to be among states such as Adamawa, Niger and Zamfara that are owing NECO millions  of Naira as a result of their inability to pay their students exams fee.

Already, some rights groups have written to the State government, notifying it of the plight of the students and urged the government to take the necessary action.

Also, a leader of an NGO, Umar Ibrahim Umar, said the complaints they got from students at a time tertiary institutions are about closing admission intake, made them to intensify the call for government to solve the problem.

Umar said they will take the necessary measures to see that the results are released to the students, because majority paid the exams fees themselves.

According to reports, NECO is being owed over N500m by the Kano State Government, despite the fact that last week, the state government said it has reduced the debt by paying N100 million.

The Kano  state government has attributed the mounting debt to economic recession and inadequate flow of IGR.

However, there are reports that this is not the first time the Kano state government found itself in such situation, because every year there are complaints from students of the withholding of their results due to uncleared  debts .
