20 Streets Kick Off Christmas Festivities With World’s Largest Light Switch-on

London has kicked off its Christmas festivities with the world’s largest light switch-on.

The capital’s most well-known hotspots including Mayfair, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square have been decked with more than one million LED lights ahead of Christmas.

A total of 20 streets across the city’s West End all had their lights switched on at the same time to mark the beginning of the festive season.

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, said: “London is the greatest city in the world and I’m thrilled that this year the West End is hosting the largest Christmas lights switch-on ever seen.

“From our world-class shops, attractions, arts, and culture to our incredible bars and restaurants – all of which will be sparkling under more than a million lights – there is so much to see and do this festive season.

“With just six weeks to go until Christmas, I’m urging Londoners and visitors to enjoy the best our capital has to offer, see the amazing lights and support our hospitality to continue to bounce back.”

The 20 streets that took part in the switch-on included Baker Street, Bond Street, Bruton Street, Conduit Street, Duke Street, James Street, Jermyn Street, Leicester Square, North Audley Street, Oxford Street, Portman Square, Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus, Princes Arcade, Regent Street, Savile Row, South Molton Street, St James’s, St James’s Market, St Christopher’s Place plus surrounding streets.

A Liverpool Christmas attraction has been named among the top 20 in the UK.

Tide analysed TripAdvisor’s data to uncover the top rated Christmas markets across the nation.

To rank the top 20 festive markets in the UK, Tide looked at the actual number of, and the percentage of, five star reviews for each place.

The company then calculated the mean average of these figures to form an overall index rank.

Liverpool’s Christmas market at St George’s Hall made it high up the top 20 list, securing an impressive third place.

Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens has claimed second and Bakewell’s Chatsworth House has taken the top spot.

Outside of the top three, City Hall in Belfast came fourth and Waddeson Manor in Waddeson was awarded fifth place.

New York Christmas Tree Adorned With 50,000 Multicolored Lights, 900-pound Star, 70 Spikes Covered in 3 Million Crystals

New York City ushered in the holiday season Saturday with the arrival of a 79-foot (24-meter) Norway spruce that will serve as one of the world’s most famous Christmas trees, in Rockefeller Center.

The 12-ton tree was trucked in from the Price family home in Elkton, Maryland — the first time the tree has come from that state since the tradition began eight decades ago. The lighting ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 1.

The spruce will be adorned with more than 50,000 multicolored lights and topped with a 900-pound (400-kilogram) star with 70 spikes covered in 3 million crystals.

The tree was cut down Thursday and removed by a crane on the Price property. The spruce, about 85 years old, had stood near the family’s house.

“So we’re very excited to have it go to New York City,” Devon Price said.

Erik Pauze, Rockefeller Center’s chief gardener, found this year’s tree in March after going to a nursery to buy plants in southern New Jersey and deciding to take a drive in the area, he said.

The tree is expected to remain up through early January.
