FCT Administration advocates end to Open Defecation

0

The authority of the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has stepped into the national push to end open defecation, accelerate access to safe water and improved hygienic practices for all residents of the territory, thus leaving no one behind.

Performing the official declaration of a State of Emergency in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in the nation’s capital, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, revealed that 39.4 percent of the FCT population practices Open Defecation, just as she described it as alarming and unacceptable.

Aliyu also stated that as part of efforts in the battle against open defecation, the administration has established the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), as the coordinating body for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activities in the FCT.

She, therefore, stressed the commitment of the FCT Administration in meeting the Open Defecation Free (ODF) target before the national set date of 2025, and universal access to water and sanitation by the SDG target of 2030.

While stressing the importance of basic water supply in rural communities, the minister however, advocated for a concerted efforts towards winning the battle against open defecation

According to her; “To achieve the goal of ending open defecation by 2025, all hands must be on deck in both the formal and informal sectors. The children, the youth, women and the elderly, all have important roles to play.

“Community-based organisations, religious and traditional leaders, organised private sector entities, development partners, as well as all government agencies are also expected to work in synergy to fight this menace”.

Specifically, she tasked the area councils chairmen to sign and demonstrate their commitment to end open defecation, stressing that they must create the WASH department, fund it, train and retrain its staff, and follow up with rigorous community engagements.

“Additionally, our traditional institutions across the territory are expected to galvanize their subjects in this fight. Community and household members are enjoined to cooperate with relevant stakeholders, and rise up to own this war against Open Defecation in their respective communities,” she added.

In his remarks, the Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, said that the country was making steady progress in meeting the objective of ending open defecation by 2025 and improving sustainable access to sanitation and hygiene.

He therefore, charged the institutions at the area councils and communities to drive the campaign through the provision of adequate resources, thereby creating the critical mass of champions across the territory.

Earlier, the FCTA Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olusade Adesola, noted that as part of its commitment, the administration had inaugurated a high-powered committee for the assessment and replacement of about 1,000 water compartment toilets as well as repair of vandalized borehole systems across the six area councils and in public schools.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the traditional rulers, chairman of ALGON FCT, UNICEF representative, and other development partners.

She assured the institute’s governing council’s continued support towards the actualisation of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s “Greater Lagos Vision.”

Australia Launches Investment Fund To Fast-Track Emerging Low Emissions Technologies

0

Australia’s prime minister on Wednesday launched a billion Australian dollar ($738 million) investment fund to fast-track emerging low emissions technologies including carbon capture and storage as he bolsters his government’s green credentials ahead of elections due within months.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison expects the private sector will at least match his government’s AU$500 million ($369 million) contribution to the fund.

“Australia can become a world leader in creating low-emissions technology that is both affordable and scalable,” Morrison said in a statement.

The ruling conservative coalition wants the fund to be administered by the Clean Energy Finance Corp., a government-owned green bank that was established to increase investment in the clean energy sector.

But that would require a change in the law because the corporation can only invest in technologies that have proved to work in the short term such as wind and solar. It cannot invest in more experiment technologies with longer-term potential such a carbon capture and storage.

Varsity Shut Indefinitely To Avert Students’ Protest Over 120% Hike In Fees

0

Authorities of the University of medical sciences,UNIMED, in Ondo state yesterday postponed indefinitely the resumption for its 2021 /2022 academic session to avert student protest against a 120 per cent hike in tuition fees.

Reports had it that the returning students of the state government-owned institution were planning to protest against the increase in school fees by the state government.

The decision of the management according to findings was to frustrate the planned protest by the aggrieved students.

A circular to students and staff which was signed by Ezekiel Adeniran for the school’s registrar said “This is to inform all staff and students of the University of medical sciences, Ondo that the University management on behalf of the Senate has approved that the resumption date for the 2021 /2022 academic session for all returning students of the University be postponed indefinitely.

“Therefore by this circular, all returning students are directed to vacate University campus and their respective Halls of residence within the next 48 hours (I.e Thursday 11th November, 2021).

The circular added that ” a new resumption date will be communicated as appropriate.

Recall that the management of the institution without any reason increased the school fees for both fresh and returning students.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party and parents of the students have kicked against the increment last weekend.
They lamented that the insensitive action of the Rotimi Akeredolu led administration would increase out of school children.

PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei in a statement said the astronomical increase ” is a silent notice to parents who cannot afford the new fees regime to withdraw their children.

“Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN has never hidden his penchant for increasing fees in tertiary institutions since he assumed leadership of the State. Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa had suffered serial closures over students protests bordering on fees hike.

“The Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo shrank to a student population of 1,753 from over 9,000 due to fees increase. Most private residential accommodations for students in Owo is now empty. Even the economy of the ancient city has been adversely affected.

“Parents and students of UNIMED received shockers of their lives when they noticed increment of fees with nearly 120% for 2021/2022 session.

“No explanation was given for this hike. Medical students have to pay as much as N1,320,000.00 as against N515,000.00 payable in the previous academic session (2020/2021).

“At Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti students of Medicine and Surgery require only N468,750.00 for 2021/2022 Session. For Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye N176,396.00 will be enough for the same course.

“There is no justification for this continuous upward review of school fees when the economy of the state is practically comatose and workers’ salaries are not only irregular but never paid in full.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ondo State Chapter calls on the Governor and the APC led government to wear a human face in taking decisions that affect the well being of our future leaders.

”lf neighbouring States with lesser revenue are charging lesser fees, why must Ondo State breed University dropouts because of the decision of one man?

The party said that ” Education is the only industry Ondo State is known for. If the incumbent administration cannot improve our lots, it is better not to complicate a bad situation.

However, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adesegun Fatusi said that there was no going back on the new fee schedule.

Fatusi said the new fee was for students to be admitted to the new academic session.

According to him “The institution commitment to offering quality education would not be compromised.

“The parents have an option. It is not compulsory for their children to study here. Other medical schools are available.

He added that “We run this school almost free of tuition fees. This school is a specialised school and we cannot continue with the previous fees.”

Ford, Purdue University Partner To Develop New Charging Station Cable

0

Ford and Purdue University are partnering to develop a new charging station cable compatible with vehicle charging technology still being developed with hopes of making a broader transition to electric vehicles possible.

Purdue researchers are trying to develop an alternative cooling method to prevent battery overheating with a charging cable that can deliver an increased current.

The cable uses liquid as an active cooling agent, which can help extract more heat from the cable.

If successful, it would deliver significantly more power than the current technology used to re-charge electric vehicles, potentially speeding up the process if used with technology that is being developed now.

Researchers say charging times for electric vehicles could eventually be on par with filling up a car at a gas station.

NASA Delays Putting Astronauts Back On Moon Until 2025

0

NASA has delayed putting astronauts back on the moon until 2025 at the earliest, missing the deadline set by the Trump administration.

The space agency had been aiming for 2024 for the first moon landing by astronauts in a half-century.

In announcing the delay, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said Congress did not provide enough money to develop a landing system for its Artemis moon program and more money is needed for its Orion capsule.

In addition, a legal challenge by Jeff Bezos’ rocket company, Blue Origin, stalled work for months on the Starship lunar landing system under development by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Officials said technology for new spacesuits also needs to ramp up, before astronauts can return to the moon.

NASA is still targeting next February for the first test flight of its moon rocket, the Space Launch System, or SLS, with an Orion capsule. No one will be on board. Instead, astronauts will strap in for the second Artemis flight, flying beyond the moon but not landing in 2024, a year later than planned. That would bump the moon landing to at least 2025, according to Nelson.

“The human landing system is a crucial part of our work to get the first woman and the first person of color to the lunar surface, and we are getting geared up to go,” Nelson told reporters. “NASA is committed to help restore America’s standing in the world.”

Nelson made note of China’s ambitious and aggressive space program, and warned it could overtake the U.S. in lunar exploration.

NASA’s last moon landing by astronauts occurred during Apollo 17 in 1972. Altogether, 12 men explored the lunar surface.

During a National Space Council meeting in 2019, Vice President Mike Pence called for landing astronauts on the moon within five years “by any means necessary.” NASA had been shooting for a lunar landing in 2028, and pushing it up by four years was considered at the time exceedingly ambitious, if not improbable.

Congress will need to increase funding, beginning with the 2023 budget, in order for NASA to have private companies competing for the planned 10 or more moon landings by astronauts, Nelson said.

The space agency also is requesting a bigger budget for its Orion capsules, from $6.7 billion to $9.3 billion, citing delays during the coronavirus pandemic and storm damage to NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, the main manufacturing site for SLS and Orion. Development costs for the rocket through the first Artemis flight next year stand at $11 billion.

Vice President Kamala Harris will convene her first National Space Council meeting, as its chair, on Dec. 1. Nelson said he updated her on the latest schedule and costs during their visit to Maryland’s Goddard Space Flight Center on Friday.

Nigeria’s Major Carrier, Air Peace Receives Change Maker Recognition Award

0

Nigeria’s major carrier, Air Peace has added another feather to its cap by clinching the Humanitarian Airline 2021 Award at the Aviators Africa Tower Awards, which held recently at Radisson Blu Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria’s South-west.

This is as the Chairman of the airline, Allen Onyema, also received the Changemaker Recognition Award- Breaking Grounds.

According to the organisers, Air Peace got the Humanitarian Award following its many social investments which have impacted Nigerians in various ways, especially the deployment of aircraft for rescue flights during lockdown last year, corporate philanthropy, massive employment, and other social impact initiatives.

Onyema was chosen for the Change maker Recognition Award because of his successful strides in advancing Nigeria’s aviation industry, including being the launch customer of the Embraer 195-E2 airplanes in the whole of Africa.

Receiving the double awards, the Chief Operating Officer, Air Peace, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Olajide, who represented Allen Onyema, thanked the organisers of Aviators Africa and dedicated the awards to Nigerians.

Speaking on behalf of the Air Peace Chairman, Mrs. Olajide said, “I feel abundantly honoured today with these prestigious Change maker Recognition and Humanitarian Awards for 2021.

“Aviation is an industry I ventured into solely to empower the critical mass of unemployed Nigerians, not to profiteer. This is what motivates me to aim higher and achieve more. When I think about the people in my employ and the challenge of unemployment in Nigeria, I’m propelled to make more giant strides.”

The Aviators Africa Tower Awards is designed as an event to recognise, celebrate, and honour excellence as well as sustainability within the African Aviation space. It seeks to appreciate organisations and acknowledge personalities and brands, which have contributed enormously to the growth of African Aviation.

N22.1bn Allowance: NASU, SSANU Begins Protest Over Sharing Formula

0

Strong indications have emerged that university workers under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions will today begin a three-day nationwide protest over the sharing formula for the N22.1 billion earned allowance promised by the federal government.

The federal government had pledged to pay a total of N22.17 billion naira for staff members of federal universities.

However, the sharing formula for the money meant for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, SSANU and NASU has been generating controversies.

Consequently, the university workers will protest from today to Friday. The directive to begin the protest was contained in a circular addressed to all branch chairmen of NASU and SSANU.

Signed by NASU’s Secretary General, Peters Adeyemi; and SSANU’s National President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the circular partly reads, “The National Joint Action committee of NASU and SSANU held a zoom meeting on Monday November 8, 2021 to review the latest development in our universities and inter university centres.

“We have decided that all our branches should mandatorily call a general meeting of NASU and SSANU on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 and from there commence a three-day protest from Wednesday, November 10, 2021 to Friday, November 12, 2021.

“The protest should be centred on the proposed provocative sharing formula to be used for the next tranche of N22.17 billion to be released by the Federal government at the rate of 75 percent to academic and 25 percent to non-teaching staff.

“It should also be centred on the refusal of the Federal government to pay the arrears of the minimum wage consequential agreement as at the last meeting with the Federal Government on August 26, 2021.”

But the leadership asked that the protest should be within the campuses and that each branch should determine the activities that will be carried out on each day of the protest.

FG, States designing ‘Operation Feed Yourself’ to fight malnutrition – Osinbajo

0

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, says the Federal Government and state governments are designing an ‘Operation Feed Yourself’ initiative to encourage the establishment of urban farms and small home gardens as part of other efforts to address malnutrition and related challenges in the country.

Osinbajo stated this earlier in the week at a meeting on nutrition attended by United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Mrs Amina Mohammed, governors, representatives of development partners including UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Aliko Dangote Foundation, amongst others.

According to a statement by the VP’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, the plan for ‘Operation Feed Yourself’ is one of three major plans arising from the UN-backed Food Systems Dialogues, to advance the fight against malnutrition.

The statement was titled, ‘Nigeria Plans ‘Operation Feed Yourself’ To Counter Malnutrition’.

Osinbajo was quoted as saying, “There are practical steps that can be taken by the States and Federal Government in the next 12 months.

“I think that some of the suggestions are important, especially those that have come from the UN Food System Dialogue.”

“States and the FGN will promote what the convener has described as ‘Operation Feed Yourself’. This is more of the establishment of urban farms and homestead gardens.

This is simply something that we think should be a mass appeal to citizens in the states, and the encouragement we can give them so that individuals and schools develop their own farms or homestead gardens.

“This obviously not only helps individuals and families but the excess can be sold to others and generally improve food security.

“The establishment of Agribusiness Investment Hubs or farm settlements or farm estates or any variety of those kinds of integrated farming arrangements will improve food and nutrition security.

What we are recommending is the sort of model that Oyo State has or any of the variety that States have. That sort is obviously recommended because of the way that it is structured and the obviously good result that they have been getting”.
