Salisu Yusuf Returns As Super Eagles Assistant Coach

0

The Executive Committee of Nigeria Football Federation has approved the re-instatement of Coach Salisu Yusuf to his position as Assistant Coach of the Super Eagles and Head Coach of the Super Eagles B team, with effect from 1st November 2021.

General Secretary of the NFF, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed on Thursday that the re-instatement of the former Kano Pillars, Enyimba FC and Rangers International FC gaffer by the NFF Board was on the recommendation of the NFF Technical Department.

Highly respected for his match –reading ability, calm demeanour and proficiency in talent discovery and development, Yusuf, in his playing days featured for Rancher Bees of Kaduna and El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri, among others.

Yusuf’s return to the three-time African champions coincides with the closing stages of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifying second round phase and the commencement of preparations for the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations finals taking place in Cameroon early next year.

The Eagles qualified for the 2019 AFCON and featured at the 2018 World Cup with Yusuf as Rohr’s assistant.

Many believed that the Eagles were more compact and played as a team with Yusuf by the sidelines.

The former midfielder also led the home-based Eagles to play in the final of the 2017 CHAN in Morocco.

However, the former Kano Pillars coach was banned after he was seen
in a video receiving cashh from undercover journalists posing as agents.

He has since served out his ban and seconded by the NFF as coach of Enugu Rangers after his contract with the Federation ran out.

Meanwhile, his employers have stood by him and insisted he is the best man to help Rohr get the Super Eagles through to the World Cup in Qatar.

According to ScoreNigeria, the main stumbling block to his return has been a top official, who was behind the appointment of former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo as Rohr’s new assistant.

However, an official informed that the top official has since given his approval for Salisu’s return.

Yobo was not part of the Eagles for the recent friendlies against Cameroon in Austria and his name was not even mentioned as regards the team of NPFL stars who will fly the country’s flag against Mexico on Saturday in Los Angeles.

A source said he did not enjoy a great working relationship with his boss Rohr, who also insisted Yobo do his coaching badges.

Anthony Joshua Trains With Mike Tyson’s Former Coach In America

0

Anthony Joshua has met with several American-based trainers as he considers a shake-up to his coaching set-up following his defeat by Oleksandr Usyk.

The former heavyweight champion has faced calls to part ways with long-time coach Rob McCracken since losing his WBA (Super), WBO and IBF titles to Usyk last month.

Joshua has met Virgil Hunter, Eddy Reynoso and Ronnie Shields in the US.

“I guess he didn’t feel it was the right [gameplan against Usyk] so he wanted to make a change,” said Shields.

Hunter is based in Oakland, California and trained the likes of multiple-weight world champion Andre Ward and Amir Khan.

Joshua has close ties within Hunter’s camp with British fighter Joshua Buatsi also training under the veteran coach.

Reynoso is famous for guiding boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez to the top of the sport and the 44-year-old also trains WBC super featherweight champion Oscar Valdez and Joshua’s former opponent Andy Ruiz Jr.

Shields, who is based in Texas, confirmed rumours Joshua was on the hunt for a new trainer after welcoming him into his gym this week.

“They reached out to me and they asked if I would be interested in taking a look at AJ and that he wanted to come down to Texas and see if things would work out between him and I,” Shields told ThaBoxingVoice. “I said, ‘No problem, I would love to see if we had a connection together’.

“He said, ‘European boxing is different from boxing in the US’. He realised he had to come to the US to get something different.

“He told me, ‘Listen, I know people don’t think I’m a dog. I’ve got to be a dog in this next fight’. And that’s his words. He told me, ‘I just need you to show me how to be the best dog you can teach me to be’.”

Shields has worked with a slew of heavyweight champions including Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.

Jermall Charlo works under Shields and posted several videos on his Instagram of Joshua speaking with his coach and doing some light training.

Joshua has not made a final decision on his coaching staff, which also includes assistant trainers Angel Hernandez and Joby Clayton.

After his defeat by Ruiz Jr, Joshua added Hernandez to his team and the 32-year-old could yet stay with McCracken as his head coach.

A switch to the US would see Joshua have to move his training headquarters away from Sheffield where he has spent his entire professional and amateur career.

McCracken has trained Joshua since his amateur days, but was heavily criticised for the gameplan against Usyk.

Joshua was completely outclassed by Usyk and convincingly beaten after deciding to try and outbox the former undisputed cruiserweight champion.

Man Utd 3-2 Atalanta: Solskjaer Turns It Around Under Pressure – But Which Man Utd Will Face Liverpool?

0

The reaction to Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Atalanta was just about as confused as trying to sum up Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s present status as manager.

Solskjaer thought they “played well” in the first half. Former United midfielder Paul Scholes described the same 45 minutes as “a major worry” and a period that would see them rolled over by Liverpool when they meet on Sunday.

Fellow pundit and former United defender Rio Ferdinand praised the “intensity”, saying “there is no better game to roll into the weekend,” while captain Harry Maguire admitted his side conceded “bad goals” but also “showed great togetherness”.

Little wonder no-one has a clue what United team is going to turn up against Jurgen Klopp’s side, and that includes Solskjaer himself.

A pattern continued, though, in the latest of these famous European nights at Old Trafford.

Just when it seems Solskjaer’s back is against the wall and his status is becoming weak, he and his players produce a result to release the pressure.

It happened against Liverpool in October 2019 when, after a run of five games without a win, United dominated Klopp’s men and became the only side in the first two-thirds of the season to take a point off them.

Two months later, they had won one in four, and then defeated Tottenham and Manchester City to quell growing disgruntlement.

Last season, United had won once in five games before they went to City and won again.

Prior to this Wednesday’s game, they had won one in five – and that was a lucky success against Villarreal.

So, when widespread booing from a frustrated Old Trafford crowd tumbled out of the stands at the end of the first half, with his team 2-0 down and having conceded the type of routine goals that have become familiar in recent matches, Solskjaer seemed like a man on the edge.

Just over an hour later, Solskjaer was being serenaded by the “singing section” in the corner between the Stretford End and South Stand. They refused to go home until the manager – who had applauded them as he headed for the dressing room at the break – came out to fulfil his TV commitments and acknowledge them for a second time.

“This corner here are the best in the world,” he said. “There is a bit of time when you are down as a supporter but you keep going.”

But when the dust settles, there must be a sense of trepidation among those same fans about the problems that lie ahead, first against Liverpool on Sunday, then at Tottenham and at home to Manchester City on 6 November, as United try to stabilise their Premier League form, which has faltered alarmingly.

Asked if the thrilling comeback showed the United players were playing for him, Solskjaer replied sharply: “Don’t even start. Don’t disrespect the players.”

On matchwinner Ronaldo – following up weekend analysis of his attacking players’ lack of pressing in the 4-2 defeat to Leicester – Solskjaer suggested: “If anyone wants to criticise him for work rate and attitude, just watch this game and how he runs around.”

Ferdinand added: “If anyone had any doubt will these players run, hustle and fight for Ole – yes they will. People were questioning were they willing to run trough brick walls for Ole but they showed that.”

Solskjaer suggested the first-half performance “wasn’t worthy” of the 2-0 scoreline at the interval – and that “was the message at half-time”.

“We need to defend key moments better, we know that. It is perceived we are so inconsistent in performance when you concede easy goals. We need to eradicate it.”

The big question for Solskjaer is, can that happen? Can it happen when he commits four players to attack in a bold 4-2-4 formation, as he did again against Atalanta – despite leaving Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho on the bench?

Fred and Scott McTominay were overworked in the centre of midfield and, especially now Raphael Varane is out for “a few weeks”, United seem to lack the personnel to cope in defence.

Amid the euphoria, it has to be recognised if David de Gea had not made his superb double save midway through the second half, there would have been no stirring comeback to celebrate.

“Against a proper team, that would be disastrous,” Scholes told BT Sport. “Jurgen Klopp will be rubbing his hands together.”

Like many of his team-mates, Bruno Fernandes mixed the sublime with the ridiculous. His pass to release Marcus Rashford for the crucial first goal in United’s comeback was sensational. But too often routine passes failed to find their men, putting his team-mates in trouble.

“That’s the way it goes with trying to make the passes,” said the Portuguese. “Some work, some don’t.”

He could have used the same comment about the entire United team: that’s the way it goes, sometimes we win, sometimes we don’t.

Instead, he summed it up in an even more basic way.

“We have to concede less and score more,” he said. “We can’t just blame the defenders. We train to attack and defend as a team. Individual mistakes happen, we have to just try to understand what is wrong and do it better.”

It sounds so simple. But as he approaches three years in the job, Solskjaer seems no nearer finding the answers.

As a consequence, no-one is any nearer knowing which United team will turn up at Old Trafford this weekend.

State Education Secretary, 4 Others Remanded For Diverting Donated School Bags

0

The Yola Criminal Area Court II has remanded the Education Secretary of Mubi South Local Government Area, Jibrilla Babale, and four others for allegedly diverting 700 bags of the United Nations Children’s Fund meant for public schools in Mubi South and Mubi North LGAs.

Those remanded in custody alongside the secretary were Mustapha Mohammed, Musa Mahmud, Aliyu Mohammed and Mohammed Yahaya.

Representatives of UNICEF, who were worried by the indiscriminate sale in open market of the branded school bags meant to be given to pupils as part of a school enrolment drive, complained to the state Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, who ordered discreet investigations into the scandal.

Fintiri was said to have ordered prosecution and disciplinary actions against the civil servants involved in the racketeering of the school bags.

Investigations revealed that Babale, who headed the distribution of the school bags, allegedly diverted 800 of them to his cronies, who allegedly sold the bags for N700,000.

According to the police first information report, the education secretary gave the bags to the UNICEF Distribution Coordinator in charge of distribution for Mubi South and North LGAs, Mustapha, who in turn sold some to Mahmud of Mubi North at the sum of N330,000 only.

Mahmud later sold the bags to Aliyu and Yahaya of Mubi North for N420,000, while knowing that the bags were provided to be distributed free of charge.

The defendants were arraigned by the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, for criminal conspiracy, breach of official trust and receiving stolen property, which contravened sections 60, 302, 307 and 312 of the Penal Code Law 2018, as amended.

The four accused persons denied the charges, while their counsel pleaded they be admitted to bail.

Justice Nuhu Garta, however, ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison and adjourned the case till November 1, 2021, for commencement of hearing, adding that, bail application would be considered before the date.

Youth Migration:Private Varsity Partners European Private Sector

0

Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu State, in partnership with the European private sector to curtail the rate of migration has plan to impart practical skills in Nigeria youths.

Prof Christian Anieke, the Vice Chancellor of the catholic university, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja.

He said that the level of migration by Nigerian youth was worrisome, adding that it was no longer about unskilled migration but that the skilled youths had joined the fray.

Anieke said that the centre for practical skills acquisition to be sited at the university, by the European team, was a unique intervention in the country, adding that it would help Nigerian youths to compete favourably with their European counterparts.

“We have not had this kind of intervention before for any European university to have interest in this kind of project,” he said

The V.C said, about 150 youths across the country would be engaged in the skill acquisition training, beginning from Nov. 18, 2021, and that the numbers would be scaled up to 5,000 eventually.

According to him, in the next 5 years, the institution  envisaged 5,000 youths with 10 different companies from Europe having already signified interest in the projects.

Anieke added that the practical training would be aligned with the needs of the European company, stressing that the University would make it easy for the trainees.

He mentioned that the youths would be taught electronic installation, transportation technology, among others, adding that they would be given European certifications at the end of the exercise, which would ensure that they could also be employed in Europe, if they chose to leave the country.

The vice chancellor said that the trainees, who would want to establish their own businesses, would be provided the requisite loan as start-up capital, and that this would be the university’s contribution to the  challenges of youth migration.

Prof Armstrong Idachaba, a visiting professor to the institution, said that the Centre for Practical Skills was a big opportunity for the youth, adding that the school would collaborate to mitigate the spate of migrations.
