Pres. Buhari Orders FIRS To Tax Digital Transactions – SGF

0

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the deployment of technology to tax digital transactions carried out across the country.

Boss Mustapha, the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), said the president directed the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to ensure that digital transactions are taxed.

He spoke on Tuesday at the 17th general assembly and 10th anniversary of the West Africa Tax Administration Forum (WATAF) in Abuja.

The SGF said FIRS had been empowered to carry out the mandate by the president and the federal executive council (FRC).

Also speaking, Mohammed Nami, the FIRS chairman, said tax regulators and industry stakeholders must rise to the challenge of taxing transactions carried out digitally.

When you speak of taxing the digital economy, you are talking about an economy without physical borders, trade and commerce that transcends our natural geographical delineations,” he said.

“In terms of tax administration, the only way that this can possibly be done with any accuracy and effectiveness is if it is done digitally, since the commercial activity itself is also done digitally.

“Tax regulators and other industry stakeholders must therefore rise up to the challenge of being in a position to tap into the stream of opportunity that advancements in science and technology afford us.”

Nigerian Senate Approves 2022-2024 MTEF, Pegs $57 Oil Benchmark, N410/$ Exchange Rate

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari had in July forwarded the 2022-2024 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) to the National Assembly for approval.

The Senate has approved the 2022-2024 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP).

President Muhammadu Buhari had in July forwarded the 2022-2024 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) to the National Assembly for approval.

In approving it on Wednesday, the Senate maintained the crude oil benchmark price of $57 per barrel for 2022 as proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari – higher than the corresponding benchmark of $40 for 2021.

It also approved the total estimated expenditure of N13.98 trillion which includes the expenditures of N1.44 trillion for Government Owned Enterprises and donor funded projects amounting to N62.24 billion.

The sums of N15.46 trillion and N16.77 trillion are projected to be spent by the federal government in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

The exchange rate of N410/$ proposed by the executive was also approved.

Daily crude oil production of 1.88mbpd, 2.23mbpd, and 2.22mbpd were approved for 2022, 2023 and 2024 respectively.

This, the lawmakers say is in view of average 1.93mbpd over the past 3 years and the fact that a very conservative oil output benchmark has been adopted for the medium term in order to ensure greater budget realism.

A fiscal deficit estimate of N5.62 trillion (including GOEs) was also approved as well as a projected new borrowings of N4.89 trillion (including Foreign and Domestic Borrowing). This is however, subject to the provision of details of the borrowing plan to the National Assembly.

The MTEF approval was sequel to a consideration of the report of the Senate Joint Committee on Finance.

Lagos Nutrition Initiative caters to 5,000 Pregnant Women

0

Lagos State set to provide nutrition support for over five thousand indigent pregnant women through its Mother Infant and Child Initiative(MICH).

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Wednesday, at the launch of the MICH in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

According to the governor, the Lagos State Office of Civic Engagement has been mandated to coordinate the nutrition initiative.

MICH, a component of the Womb to School Initiative by Lagos state, is aimed at providing food and supplements for indigent pregnant women in the state.

The maternal health care programme is targeted at ensuring the mother and her unborn child receive all the necessary and adequate nutrition needed for development and growth.

Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu noted that the MITCH programme which began last year had in the pilot phase last year reached 3000 women across 12 local governments and LCDAs.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the food packs distributed to the indigent pregnant women contain all the recommended daily nutrition which includes protein, carbohydrates, milk, fat, fibre, calcium, folic acids and all necessary vitamins.

In addition to this provision, the governor stated that each of the beneficiaries would be given “access to a toll-free line with membership to a social media chat group that will be created by each local government area so that they can have direct feedback, monitoring and observation process even post the briefing.

The governor also said that the beneficiaries would be guaranteed treatment of any ailment they might face during their pregnancy under the MICH initiative.

The local governments where this programme has kicked off, according to the executive governor, are Ikeja, Alimosho, Badagry, Epe, Agege, Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, Somolu, Kosofe and Ibeju Lekki. The initiative will be expanded to other local governments in due time, the governor said.

SANWO-Olu also noted that the MICH programme, which is a component of the womb to school initiative, is aimed at supporting the development of a socially responsible citizen from infancy to adulthood.

The programme, he noted, is guided by the sustainable development goals, especially the need to reduce neonatal and maternal mortality in the state.

On her part, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement and initiator of the programme, Princess Aderemi Adebowale while speaking at the launch noted that the programme is essential to grooming responsible children for the future.

While presenting her speech, she said, “It is our vision that by the year 2050, children nurtured by the Womb to School Initiative would have become responsible and productive citizens contributing immensely to the socio-economic development of our dear state in particular and the nation in general.”

On his part, the state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi noted that the nutrition of a baby in the womb is critical.

Abayomi said, “We are going to the baby inside the womb because that is a critical stage of development because if we miss it at that point, there is no going back. The child will forever remain unequipped to deal with life.

And so, this administration is putting its resources, time and its strategies into developing the next generation of children that will be able to compete on the international stage and to do that we need a sound nutritional programme for the foetus and for the newborn child.”

The launch of the MICH initiative also saw a presentation of the first 57 MICH babies from across the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs in the state and the presentation of the MICH app and website.

Impact Of Insurgency: E.U, UNICEF Provide Psychosocial Support to 5,129 Out-of-School Children in Borno

0

The European Union and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have collaborated to provide community-based psychosocial services aimed at improving children’s mental health.

UNICEF has also urged all sides of the conflict to protect children from the short and long-term effects of the conflict.

Through the EU-funded Support to Early Recovery and Resilience Project, which was implemented by UNICEF, at least 5,129 conflict-affected out-of-school children in six local government areas of Borno State are receiving services, including mental health support in safe spaces to strengthen their well-being, resilience, literacy skills and self-reliance.

In a statement released by UNICEF communications expert in Borno State, Folashade Adebayo, the Fund said: “The project also supports vulnerable children across the state with protection and health services, vocational and basic literacy skills, access to justice and security under a holistic humanitarian intervention that has so far provided 15,552 out-of-school children with vocational training; 1,610 out-of-school children with literacy and numeracy skills as well as 5,194 children enrolled into integrated Qur’anic schools across many LGAs.”

UNICEF representative to Nigeria, Peter Hawkins, said the scars of conflict are real and enduring for children, adding that several of them have fallen victims of crisis they never started.

He added that stress and violence have been linked to poor brain development, depression and poor self-esteem, and children exposed to conflict and violence are at risk of long-term mental health and psychosocial issues.

In the same vein, the EU Head of Cooperation, Cecile Tassin-Pelzer, said addressing the psychosocial well-being and development of children and teachers in conflict situations is an important part of re-establishing education provision and enabling children to re-enter schools safely.

The EU-funded programme in Borno State is a component of a three-year €10 million European Union Support to Early Recovery and Resilience package to support children, youths, and communities in Borno State.

The package also includes the provision of vocational skills and non-formal education to at least 25,000 young people, the construction and rehabilitation of learning centers and the strengthening of education management information systems.

Akinfenwa Reacts To Guardiola’s Legendary Comment, Says ‘I’m Humbled’

1

Pep Guardiola suggested Man City’s academy is fostering numerous first-team bound players and labelled Adebayo Akinfenwa ‘a legend’ after their win over Wycombe.

Guardiola had admitted in the build-up to Tuesday’s game his hands were tied by a number of injuries to City’s first-team players, and watched on as the five debutants he named to face League One Chairboys played their part in a 6-1 hammering at the Etihad.

The margin of victory was sealed by 19-year-old Cole Palmer’s sensational curling effort in his first goal for the club late on, but left-back Josh Wilson-Esbrand also caught the eye when making City’s second goal before half-time on an encouraging night for the club’s young prospects.

“I just have to say thank you to the academy,” Guardiola said after the game. “They all do an incredible job.

“You have the feeling that we have not just one or two potential players but many of them. The academy gives them the right values to become good professional players and they have the talent.

“We have the feeling that we can count on them. We saw it today a little bit and we know how good they are. As manager of the first team, I can enjoy it, I can use them.”

Guardiola may not have known much about 39-year-old veteran striker Akinfenwa prior to the build-up to Tuesday’s encounter.

After a near-miss from a header and a typically lively attacking showing from the forward though, he was certainly aware of his threat come full-time and said he would use the experience to help his young guns prosper – with none of his back four born when Akinfenwa made his professional debut in 2001.

“They faced a legend of English football, it was an absolute pleasure to meet him,” Guardiola said of Akinfenwa.

“It’s not easy to do it but they did very well. We are going to review the game and show them how to solve the problems. But there was not one bad performance.”

Reacting, Akinfenwa tweeted that he is “humbled” by Guardiola’s comment.

Juventus Finally Earn First Serie A Victory Of The Season Against Spezia.

0

Juventus produced a second-half fightback to earn their first Serie A victory of the season against Spezia.

Centre-back Matthijs de Ligt scored the winner from a corner six minutes after Federico Chiesa’s equaliser.

Spezia had produced their own comeback from a goal down through Emmanuel Gyasi and Janis Antiste, after Moise Kean’s low strike into the bottom corner gave Juventus a 28th-minute lead.

Victory moves Massimiliano Allegri’s side up to 12th in the table.

Manager Allegri billed the match as a “relegation six-pointer after two points from four matches had left Juventus in the bottom three.

Having failed to win any of their first four games for only the fourth time in the club’s history, Kean’s first Juventus goal since rejoining from Everton in August temporarily relieved some of the pressure on the visitors.

But Gyasi levelled with a looping strike five minutes later and, after a couple of good saves by goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet from Paolo Dybala at the end of the first half, Antiste’s deflected shot threatened to extend Juve’s miserable start.

Chiesa, rewarded for his persistence as the ball broke kindly for his goal, led the Juventus fightback and De Ligt stabbed home with 18 minutes remaining before a nervous-looking Juventus held on for a valuable first three points of the campaign.

Asensio Scores Hat-trick As Real Madrid Reclaims Top Spot In La Liga

0

Marco Asensio scored a superb hat-trick as Real Madrid reclaimed top spot in La Liga with an emphatic victory over Mallorca at the Bernabeu.

Asensio scored twice in five first-half minutes – either side of Lee Kang-in’s well-taken response for the visitors.

The Spaniard found the bottom corner to make it 4-1 10 minutes after half-time.

Karim Benzema had opened the scoring after three minutes and added a late fifth for Real, before Isco completed a 6-1 rout with six minutes remaining.

Atletico Madrid had moved top following a 2-1 win against Getafe on Tuesday and now sit two points behind Carlo Ancelotti’s side – with both teams unbeaten after six games.

A slip by defender Josep Antoni Gaya Martinez allowed the in-form Benzema to get Real off to the perfect start.

Asensio – who left Mallorca for Real in 2015 – doubled the advantage when Vinicius Junior’s cut-back was pushed into his path by the goalkeeper, and he then further extended Real’s advantage, finishing from a couple of Benzema assists for his second and third goals.

Benzema made it eight goals and seven assists in La Liga this season with a deflected second goal of the night, before Vinicius teed up substitute Isco to round off an impressive display by the hosts.

Qatar World Cup 2022: Premier League Set For Seven-Week Mid-Season Break In 2022-23

1

The Premier League could have a seven-week mid-season break in 2022-23 to accommodate the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

At a meeting on Wednesday, it was proposed the next campaign would stop after the weekend of November 12 before fixtures resumed again on 26 December.

The season is also set to begin a week earlier than normal on 6 August and finish a week later on 28 May.

That would therefore push both the Champions League and FA Cup finals into June.

The clubs were shown an outline calendar at a shareholders’ meeting.

The World Cup runs from 21 November to 18 December and global governing body Fifa has already stipulated that players must be released on 14 November.

That would have taken out seven rounds of Premier League games and the final two Champions League group stages matches from this season’s calendar.

It is understood Uefa is planning to complete the group stage of next season’s competition before the World Cup, which will create heavier fixture congestion. It would be similar to that experienced last term, which started late because of the effects of the shutdown in 2019-20.

The Qatar World Cup is being staged in November and December because temperatures can reach up 50C in the summer months.

Monaco Grand Prix: Formula 1 Race Weekend Format To Change In 2022

0

The Monaco Grand Prix is to undergo a historic change of format next season by changing to a three-day weekend.

Traditionally, Monaco has been held over four days, with the first practice day on Thursday, and Friday a free day for Formula 1 teams and drivers.

But to add flexibility to F1’s calendar choices, the event will follow the same format as other races from 2022.

“Monaco will be three days, straight away,” F1 president Stefano Domenicali told CNN.

“So Friday, Saturday and Sunday instead of Thursday, hold, and then Saturday and Sunday. That’s the change we’re going to introduce next year.”

The traditional format was part of Monaco’s glamorous reputation. Parties would be held on boats in the famous harbour on Thursday night, leaving Friday free for guests to recuperate or take part in other events before the serious racing action started at the weekend.

F1 is planning a record 23-race calendar for 2022, as it was this year before coronavirus-related travel restrictions cut the season to an expected 22 grands prix.

This season’s calendar is still not finalised – there is still one vacant date on 19-21 November following the cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix. This is expected to be filled by F1’s first race in Qatar.

The Chinese, Canadian, Singapore and Japanese Grands Prix have also been cancelled this year because of the pandemic, but F1 is hoping all of them can return in 2022.

Domenicali said the 2022 calendar would be announced at a meeting of the FIA world motorsport council on 15 October.

He said there had been interest from Kyalami in South Africa for a return to the schedule for the first time since 1993.

While Domenicali confirmed “discussions” with Kyalami had taken place, the Italian added F1 had also “received other requests from countries in Africa”.

He said: “In this moment, I need to keep it confidential.”
