Zambian Envoy Confirms 200 Tanzanian Trucks Seized Over Illegal Logging

0

Zambia’s High Commission has confirmed that Lusaka had seized 200 Tanzanian-registered trucks over illegal logging.

High Commissioner Benson Chali told The Citizen that the lorries were found carrying protected mukula (Pterocarpus chrysothrix) logs without valid permits.

Last week, Tanzania’s then Transport Minister Leonard Chamuriho said the country was not aware of trucks seized in Zambia and had not received any complaints from the lorry drivers or owners.

In 2016, Zambia banned the felling and transporting of mukula, a type of rosewood, as part of its efforts to curb its rapid loss fuelled by growing demand of rosewood in Asia.

In 2018, Zambia Revenue Authority seized at least 250 lorries that were found carrying banned timber.

Lusaka requires transporters, even those in transit, to have valid documents showing the origin of their rosewood logs and when they were harvested as a caution to end the smuggling of endangered tree species.

The trucks were seized as the drivers did not have documents to indicate the origin of the logs.

“We have seized over 200 trucks laden with logs because Tanzanian drivers didn’t have legal documents and transportation permits to show that the logs were indeed from the Democratic Republic of Congo as claimed,” he said.

“We will only release the trucks after they show the relevant documents.”

Chali says authorities suspect the Tanzanian drivers could have used forged documents to ferry logs on the pretext that they had originated in the DRC.

Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Zambia, Hassan Simba Yahya, told The Citizen that the issue will now be resolved diplomatically by the two countries.

Lorry owners have maintained that the seized vehicles came from the DRC before they were impounded by Zambian authorities.

Chuki Shaaban, Tanzania Medium and Small Truck Owners Association (TMSTOA) chairman, told The Citizen recently that the lorries were transporting the logs from the DRC to the Dar es Salaam Port.

“They were seized despite the fact that our drivers produced genuine documents showing that the logs had been transported from the DRC,” he said.

“It has now been close to two months since our lorries were impounded, but nothing has been done.”

Shaaban said they had been silent about the issue with the hope that the issue would be resolved through.

Bauchi Commissioner Claims Improved Nomadic Education Will Curb Banditry, Kidnapping

0

Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aliyu Tilde has argued that improving the nomadic education system will curb banditry in the country.

In a statement he issued shortly after he was sworn in again as education commissioner, Tilde said nomadic education has suffered neglect in the past, thus, would be the state’s priority.

Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aliyu Tilde

The commissioner said he has met with the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE), Professor Bashir Usman, who assured him of the commission’s support.

“The statistics are clear. In the past five years, only seven projects were carried out under Bauchi State Agency for Nomadic Education (BASANE), touching on only seven out of 463 primary schools, three of which were carried out by NCNE. To put it straight, the 463 schools have been abandoned for years. Is it surprising that we have bandits and kidnappers below the age of 30 from our forests?

“Are these schools not part of the basic schools’ count that are entitled to the attention that other similar schools get? Fortunately, I have cleared the matter with the executive secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission in Abuja a day before. These schools deserve to be treated as other schools,” Tilde said.

He promised to involve all stakeholders in the state, saying, that as clerics continue with their efforts to take religious education to the nomads, the government needs to retrace its steps and pay due attention to the rights and plight of the nomads. “Education is the only tool for their refinement and integration into the larger civilization,” he said.

FG Adviced To Support The Review Of Medical Curriculum

1

The Federal Government has been called upon to support the move to review the academic curriculum for medical practices to check obsolete practices and enhance efficiency.

The National President of Anatomical Society of Nigeria (ASN), Dr. Olugbenga Ayannuga, said this in Ilorin during the association’s 17th annual scientific conference and general meeting.

He said, “the truth is what people are trained within the 1950s will not work today.”

Ayannuga, an associate professor of Anatomy at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, also said Nigeria must rejig its medical academic curriculum to make graduates relevant to current realities.

“Apart from training doctors, healthcare professionals, nurses, physiotherapists, we already have a stand-alone discipline in Anatomy. It is also important that a product of that stand-alone programme in Anatomy must be mainstreamed into the working class (civil service), particularly, the ones related to health,” said Ayannuga.

The medical expert, who lamented the high unemployment rate among anatomists in Nigeria, said, “We talk about joblessness in this country. But the truth is that there are quite a number of people who have the capacity based on their training and are not given the opportunity to do anything.”

He added, “For instance, to curb insecurity in Nigeria, some people think that the answer to it is to employ more people into the workforce. That is very good. But the truth is you will need a component of science in it, and that is where a case of a forensic officer in the military and paramilitary settings is very important.”

According to him, the military and paramilitary can identify people based on the features “they see on them, and the best of people prepared for that kind of job are anatomists.”

“But as I am talking to you today, the police will not put out vacancies and say we need forensic scientists who have training in embryological sciences, particularly Anatomy,” said Ayannuga. “Those are areas we need to take care of. But at the last count in this society, the anatomists are best trained to do those kinds of jobs.

He explained that Adegbenro was caught during one of the audit and verification exercises carried out by HSC in partnership with National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives.

“Adegbenro has been practicing with fake certificates and professional license. She forged a Bachelor of Nursing degree from Ladoke Akintola University Ogbomosho, a National Youth Service discharge certificate, a registered Nurse Certificate and practicing license of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

ASUU To Resume Strike As Government Enages On Agreement

0

The Yola zone of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has called on the public to prevail on the federal and state governments to comply to union’s legitimate demands to avoid the resumption of the suspended strike.

Zonal Coordinator , Reuben Jonathan, who made the call at a news conference  in Yola, said the zone had met and reviewed the MoA of 23rd December, 2020 signed with the Federal government; the issues related to the draft renegotiation agreement of May, 2021 and other matters affecting the university system generally.

According to him, the zone appreciated the Federal Government’s action in sending visitation panels to public universities.

“However, the zone expects the speedy release of the whitepaper of visitation panels to the universities for the benefit of the university system”, he said.

He called on the state governors, as visitors to state universities, to also emulate the federal government and immediately constitute visitation panels to state-owned universities.

“The Federal Government Team and ASUU concluded the renegotiation meeting in May, 2021 but up till now our Union is in dark as to the position of the renegotiation with the Federal Government.

“This lukewarm attitude and deliberate delay has triggered agitations from our members”, he said.

Jonathan added, “While funding in Nigerian public universities is grossly inadequate, the situation is most worrisome in state-owned universities”.

“The inefficiency and over-reliance on the federal government’s interventions by state-owned universities, emanating from ASUU struggles, have led the state governors to develop a lukewarm attitude towards funding state universities”.

The Zonal coordinator further expressed concern over the non-disbursement of the N30 billion naira revitalization fund as agreed in the 2020 MoA with the union.

“Under the Postgraduate graduands, we have one hundred and sixty-nine (169) Academic Masters, sixteen (16) Professional Masters’, and twenty-one (21 Postgraduate Diploma graduands from different programmes spread across the 12 faculties in the University.
