Lagos Students Association Appeals To Gov. Sanwo-Olu To Reverse Fee Increment

0

The National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) has appealed to the state Government to reconsider the introduction of fees for feeding and welfare of students in the state’s model colleges.

The Public Relations Officer of NULASS, Hassan Abdulsalam, made the appeal in an interview with journalists in Lagos.

The government had, in the past 18 years, been charging a boarding fee of N25,000 per student per term in the model colleges.

The government, however, recently increased the fee to N50,000 per student per term.

He said the new fee will take a toll on parents because it is double of the former fee.

He added “We are concerned about this development; considering the situation of things in the country, we are making this passionate.”

Abdulsalam, however, applauded the government’s efforts in improving the standards of schools across the state.

He appealed to the government to reverse the fee increase before the beginning of the 2021/2022 academic session.

Teachers, Parents Call For Results Review At London School Amid Downgrading Claim

0

Teachers and parents at a London secondary school have called for hundreds of GCSE and A-level results to be reassessed independently amid claims senior staff instructed teachers to downgrade their initial marks.

Teachers at Ravensbourne School in Bromley say they were asked to deliberately mark down students this year because their results were significantly better than in previous years.

They told local media senior staff members are concerned the marked improvement could trigger allegations of artificial grade inflation, something the school’s multi-academy trust was concerned about.

An internal email, sent to some staff by the deputy head, Louise Cooper, said the three-year trend in grades at the school should be used to support the final marking decisions adding that she would look at anomalies which did not match the previous three-year trend.

Another document showed a teacher protesting about grade reductions for specific students, with the teacher stating they were not willing to sign off grades they believed to have been manipulated to fit with the grades from previous years.

This year, education secretary Gavin Williamson scrapped GCSE and A-level exams due to the pandemic and replaced them with teacher awarded grades overseen by exam boards.

Students in England achieved record numbers of top grades this year, with a 2.5% percentage point rise in top grades in GCSEs and a 6% jump in points in A-levels.

Update: Buhari Orders Criminal Investigation Into N6trillion Investment In NDDC For 19yrs

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered a criminal investigation into an approximated six trillion naira given to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) since 2001.

Recall that the President had ordered for a holistic forensic audit of the activities of the Commission from inception to August 2019 in response to the yearnings of the people of the Niger Delta region to reposition it for the effective service delivery.

Buhari gave this order Thursday in Abuja after receiving the final forensic audit report from the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio.

Represented by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami, Buhari stated: “The Federal Government will, in consequence, apply the law to remedy the deficiencies outlined in the audit report as appropriate.

“This will include but not be limited to the initiation of criminal investigations, prosecution, recovery of funds not properly utilized for the public purposes for which they were meant for amongst others.

“In all these instances of actions, legal due processes will strictly be complied with.”

According to the President, the forensic audit report will be forwarded to the Federal Ministry of Justice for a legal review and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government will be engaged in doing justice to the findings accordingly.

Buhari disclosed that it is on record that between 2001 and 2019, the federal government has approved three trillion, three Hundred and seventy-five billion, seven hundred and seventy-six thousand, seven hundred and ninety ninety-four naira, ninety-three kobo as budgetary and two trillion, four hundred and twenty billion, nine hundred and forty million, and, eight hundred and ninety-four thousand, one hundred and ninety-one naira as income from Statutory and non Statutory Sources, which brings the total sum to six trillion naira given to the Niger Delta Development Commission.

He said it was also on record that the execution of over 13, 777 projects in the oil-rich region was substantially compromised.

Buhari noted that the Federal government is also concerned about multitudes of Niger Delta development commission’s bank accounts amounting to 362 and lack of proper reconciliation of accounts.

He stated that the call for the audit by the people of the Niger Delta Region arose from the huge gaps between resources invested in the region vis a vis the huge gap in infrastructural, human and economic development.

Buhari said he was not oblivious of the interest generated by Stakeholders towards the forensic audit exercise and the agitation for the constitution of the Board of the NDDC.

He went on: “However, this Administration is determined to address challenges militating against the delivery of the mandate of the NDDC to the people of the Niger Delta Region.

“It is in the broader context of the foregoing developments that I recently signed into law the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) which has been a contentious issue over the years for successive governments, to bring about the prudence and accountability in the Petroleum Sector and to give a sense of participation and ownership to the host communities.”

According to him, the report on the forensic audit of the NDDC and recommendations will be critically analysed for necessary action and implementation.

“We owe it a duty to the people of the Niger Delta Region to improve their standard of living through the provision of adequate infrastructural and socio-economic development.

“The welfare and socio-economic inclusion of the Niger Delta Region is paramount to the development and security of the Region and by extension the country.

“Funds spent on development activities should as a consequence promote political and socio-economic stability in the Region,” Buhari added.

Earlier in his remarks, Akpabio disclosed that the auditors have concluded the examination and documentation of a total of 13,777 contracts for projects and programmes awarded to Contractors and consultants in all Niger Delta States from 2001-August 2019, at a total final contract value of N 3,274.206,032,213.24.

According to Akpabio, the name and identity of a vast number of beneficiary companies were also captured as well.

His words: “Via Field Verification, the Forensic Auditors established the exact status of all contracts for projects and programmes in all constituent states during the period under review classified into completed, ongoing, abandoned, terminated, taken-over and non-existence.”

The Minister disclosed that the auditors also focused on funding gaps, Irregularities, mismanagements and Due Proces Violations/Conflicts of interest.

He went on: “A Personnel Audit and Review of the governance and organisational structure of NDDC was also carried out. An operational guideline/Manual and a fit-for-purpose organogram that would aid the transformation of NDDC to a globally competitive development agency has been developed as well.

“Available financial records of the commission were analysed with the aim of establishing the total amount of funds received by the Commission from all sources, both statutory and non-statutory and the total funds and other resources paid to contractors as well as the total amount outstanding as debts with regards to such projects within the period under reference.

“The Auditors have also provided policy recommendations, in terms of measures that should be taken to ensure the prevention of such irregularities and mismanagement, going forward.

“With utmost respect Sir, I crave the indulgence of Your Excellency that after my speech, the Lead Forensic Auditors will present to you a quick summary of their Findings and Recommendations.”

An Entertainment Lawyer, Rockson Igelige has called on Edo state government to build a museum for the works of the legendary singer and a guitarist, Sir Victor Uwaifo, who died on Aug. 28.

Igelige, in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, said that such gesture would help to immortalise the late music maestro.

According to him, the Edo State Government should reach out to the family to work out plan for a museum for his works.

He described Uwaifo as `a writer, sculptor and musical instrument inventor’, who must be immortalised for his legendary work.

He said he was vast in cultural values, particularly in that of the Benin Kingdom by documenting the Benin history through his artistic works.

“Uwaifo was a cultural icon of inestimable value and national treasure. The late musician was an ocean of knowledge in matters relating to culture.

“I call on Edo State Government to as a matter of urgency ensure that the works of the late music legend is preserved for the future and unborn generations,’’ he said.

South Africa Declines Request To Take In Afghan Refugees

0

South Africa said it has declined a request to host Afghans who have fled into Pakistan to escape the Taliban, as it is already accommodating “a substantial number” of refugees from other countries.

The government said it had been approached “to consider receiving a number of Afghanistan refugees who have sought refuge in Pakistan.”

“The request is that they be accommodated in South Africa en route to their final destinations,” the foreign ministry said in a statement late Wednesday.

“The South African Government is unfortunately not in a position to accommodate such a request.”

It said the country “is already home to a substantial number of refugees and is seized with addressing their needs.

“Most of them already benefit from the Social Assistance and free medical health programmes offered by our country.”

The most industrialised nation on the continent, South Africa is a major destination for economic migrants from neighbouring countries and beyond.

The country also boasts one of the world’s most progressive refugee policies, which helped attract more than a million asylum-seekers between 2007 and 2015.

But the processing of their paperwork was backlogged even before the pandemic and most find themselves stuck in limbo after applications are rejected, according to rights groups.

The Taliban celebrated Tuesday after the last US troops left the country, ending 20 years of war.

The Islamists’ return to power forced Western countries to evacuate their citizens and Afghans likely to face reprisals from the Taliban for having worked for the foreign forces in the country.

“In terms of international law, the well-being of the refugees is best served by remaining in the first country arrival – Pakistan – pending their final destinations,” the South African statement said.

Uganda last week accommodated 51 Afghan evacuees.

The east African country said it would provide them with temporary refuge following a request from the US government to temporarily host “at-risk” Afghan nationals and others who are in transit to other destinations.
