Biden Takes Fire From Republicans After Kabul Attack

Former US president Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers lashed out at Democratic President Joe Biden on Thursday after 13 US troops were killed and 18 wounded in suicide bombings in Kabul.

Trump, who has been sharply critical of Biden’s handling of the Afghan crisis, called Thursday’s suicide attacks in Kabul a “tragedy” and said they should have been prevented.

“This tragedy should never have been allowed to happen, which makes our grief even deeper and more difficult to understand,” said Trump, whose administration — in a February 2020 deal with the Taliban — committed the United States to a full withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Several Republican lawmakers said Biden should resign or be impeached.

“Joe Biden is responsible,” said Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri. “It is now clear beyond all doubt that he has neither the capacity nor the will to lead. He must resign.”

Representative Elise Stefanik, the third-ranking Republican in the House, tweeted that “Joe Biden has blood on his hands.”

“The buck stops with the President of the United States,” Stefanik said.

“This horrific national security and humanitarian disaster is solely the result of Joe Biden’s weak and incompetent leadership. He is unfit to be Commander-in-Chief.”

The Republican minority leader of the House of Representatives urged Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker, to call the chamber back from recess to address the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan.

Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has handed out invitations to 30 players ahead of next month’s opening rounds of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Eagles will begin their race to Qatar 2022 with a home game against the Lone Stars of Liberia in Lagos on Friday, September 3 (Day 1), and tackle Cape Verde in Mindelo on Tuesday, September 7(Day 2).

Rohr has largely opted to work with the bulk of players he has tried and trusts to get Nigeria to Qatar next November.

The Franco-German tactician invited team stalwarts like the two goalkeepers Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho; defenders William Troost-Ekong, Abdullahi Shehu, Chidozie Awaziem, and Leon Balogun, while his trusted midfielders are EPL-based Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo, while the forward line includes captain Ahmed Musa, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, and Victor Osimhen.

Apart from the regulars, there are returns for South Africa-based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Kevin Akpoguma, and Greece-based forward Henry Onyekuru. Former junior international Kingsley Michael is also called, while Innocent Bonke from Swedish club, Malmo, joins the Nigerian camp for the first time.

As explained in a press statement issued by the NFF on Thursday, the situation with UK-based players, who cannot travel to Cape Verde (which is on the red list of the British Government with regards to the global coronavirus pandemic) meant the squad had to be enlarged.

The NFF said should the situation remain unchanged, the eight UK-based players on the list would head back to their clubs after the clash with Liberia at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

The Super Eagles, who have featured in six of the last seven FIFA World Cup finals, host the Lone Stars of Liberia in Lagos before traveling to the Island of Mindelo to take on the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde on Day 2 of the qualification series.

The Central African Republic is the other team in the group, and they will line up for home-and-away encounters with the Super Eagles in October.

Organisers suspend Saudi Arabia recruitment as DSS disperses doctors

Operatives of the Department of State Services, on Thursday, dispersed medical doctors, who stormed the Sheraton Hotels, Abuja, to take part in the recruitment interview organised by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health.

On Tuesday, Medical consultants in their hundreds flooded the Ladi Kwali Hall of the hotel to participate in the recruitment, while another exercise was scheduled for Thursday.

Our correspondents gathered that the DSS operatives stormed the hotel on Thursday morning and dispersed the doctors and journalists, who gathered at the venue.

A journalist with the International Centre for Investigative Reporting, Marcus Fatunde, was arrested at the venue.

Fatunde was, however, released later.

According to an eyewitness report “When I came here, we saw the DSS operatives dispersing the people that came for the interview and before we knew it, everywhere had been scattered.

“A journalist with the ICIR, Marcus Fatunde, was also arrested, but he has been released.”

A doctor, who did not want his name in print said, “Some of us, who came here today, came because we don’t even have jobs and we don’t want to do the wrong things.

“Two categories of people were here today: the jobless ones and the ones who are poorly remunerated.

“We didn’t commit any crime; we just wanted a better system. So, why is the government trying to frustrate us?

The Vice-President, Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, Adejo Arome, told Newsmen that the organisers of the interview confirmed to him that the exercise had been suspended.

He said, “Well, some people got to the venue today (Thursday) and when they didn’t meet anyone, they called me and I confirmed from the recruiters and some other doctors that the recruitment has been suspended.

“The recruitment on Tuesday garnered coverage, because of the media publicity. It was everywhere that doctors were going to Saudi Arabia.

“The recruiters had to suspend it because the Federal Government said it felt embarrassed by the news.

“It is a big shame. The government has no right to infringe on the right of the citizens to choose to go to another country. If the system is not working, let them go to another country.”

Doctors Warn Over Dangerous Viral Milk Crate Challenge

0

Health experts have warned that people should not attempt the latest viral challenge, walking over a pyramid of precariously balanced milk crates.

Social media sites have been flooded in recent days by videos of people in the United States and beyond trying, and mostly failing.

Most videos end with what looks like a painful fall onto the collapsing crates, or the ground, as onlookers film on their phones in what some dubbed an event in the “Hood Olympics.”

“You’re at risk for, hitting your head and getting a head bleed,” said Dr. Chad Cannon, an emergency room doctor at the University of Kansas Health System.

If “you land on the milk crate, you will break your back and be paralyzed.”

While the hashtag was readily searchable on Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday, searches on TikTok returned no results

“This phrase may be associated with behavior or content that violates our guidelines. Promoting a safe and positive experience is TikTok’s top priority,” the search result page said.

The videos, and photographs of some appalling injuries, were reminiscent of an earlier internet sensation that had doctors tearing their hair out.

The 2018 Tide Pod Challenge saw young people biting into liquid laundry detergent packets. Some social media users pointed out the likelihood that not all of those appearing in these videos in the United States would get free medical treatment.

China To Build Satellite Constellation For Natural Disaster Observation

China has begun the construction of a constellation of 36 low-orbit satellites to gather information for forecasting natural disasters and monitoring urban emergencies.

The project undertaken by the Tianjin Satcom Geohe Technologies Co., Ltd. was inaugurated on Tuesday in China’s spacecraft launch centre of Wenchang, in south China’s Hainan Province.

Guo Jianqiang, president of the tech firm based in north China’s Tianjin Municipality, said the first satellite would be inaugurated in space in June 2022.

All 36 satellites would have been inaugurated by the end of May 2023, to complete the constellation.

The satellite network would provide high-resolution images to help observers identify millimeter-level geological deformations in order to gauge the possibilities of geological disasters, such as landslide, subsidence and collapse, said Guo, also an official with China Geological Survey.

Guo said satellite data combined with geological survey and monitoring data captured by ground sensors in geohazard-prone areas could significantly improve the accuracy and timeliness of natural disaster prediction.

Baby Born during Afghan Evacuation Named After U.S. Plane

0

A baby born on board a U.S. military flight during the evacuation mission from Afghanistan has been named after the plane.

The girl was born at the U.S. Ramstein Air Base in Germany and was named Reach after the plane’s call sign, commander of the U.S. forces in Europe, Tod Wolters, said at a Pentagon briefing.

The Boeing C-17 planes used by the U.S. air force often use the call sign “Reach” followed by a combination of numbers.

The U.S. Air Mobility Command had tweeted at the weekend that a woman went into labour during the flight from Qatar to Germany and had experienced complications.

Her condition improved after the plane descended in altitude to increase air pressure, which helped to save the mother’s life.

Soldiers helped to deliver the child in the aircraft’s cargo bay upon landing, the command said.

The military has since spoken with the parents, Wolters said.

“As you can well imagine, being an Air Force fighter pilot, it’s my dream to watch that young child called Reach grow up and be a U.S. citizen and fly United States Air Force fighters in our Air Force,” Wolters joked.

The German air base was just a transit point for the evacuees from Afghanistan.

At the moment they were generally being flown from there to Dulles International Airport, near Washington DC, and then distributed to U.S. military bases.

Ramstein, near the western German city of Kaiserslautern, was the largest U.S. air base outside the country.

Wolters said it had capacity for up to 12,000, and that together with other German sites and one base each in Italy and Spain, there was capacity for 25,000 evacuees.

He added that the agency on its part would also be conducting assessment to support the displaced persons.

“As part of our collective responsibilities Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) need to always come together with the view to plan for effective response to flood, to save lives, destruction of properties and infrastructures.

“Since the release of climate prediction NiMet and Flood Outlook by NIHSA, NEMA carefully series of activities to flood preparedness, mitigation and response measures, most of which have been implemented,” he said.

The director-general, while commending the stakeholders for their performances in the past, added that the agency would continue to count on their continuous cooperation and collaboration towards saving lives, properties and attending to the distressed in the society.
