Kebbi High Court Reinstates Secondus As PDP Chairman

0

A Kebbi State High Court has ordered Prince Uche Secondus to return to his position as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A vacation Judge, Justice Nusrat Umar, gave the order in a suit brought before her in Birinin Kebbi, the state capital.

In the case, cited as KB/AC/M. 170/2021, Justice Umar said she was satisfied after reading the affidavit of the respondents.

She said it was necessary to issue an interim order on the purported suspension of Prince Secondus pending the determination of the case.

The order reads as follows: “An order of this Honourable court granting leave to the first respondent (Uche Secondus) to continue exercising all the constitutional powers of the office of Chairman of PDP (second defendant) as enshrined in both 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended and the Peoples Democratic Party’s constitution pending the hearing and final determination of applicant’s motion on notice.

“Any further order(s) as this Honourable Court may deem fit to make in the circumstances.”

Three concerned members of the party, Yahaya Usman, Abubakar Mohammed and Bashar Suleman are the claimants/Applicant in the case while Prince Secondus and the PDP are the defendants/Respondents.

Blue Origin Launches Artwork, Moon-Landing Test Into Space

0

Blue Origin launched artwork painted on a capsule and a moon-landing navigation experiment into space Thursday, a month after sending founder Jeff Bezos on the company’s first passenger flight.

No one was aboard for Thursday’s 10-minute flight, which included other experiments from NASA and others.

The paintings by Ghana artist Amoako Boafo were on three parachute panels on the outside of the capsule at the very top.

Boafo painted a self-portrait as well as portraits of his mother and a friend’s mother, explaining “a mother’s love comes from a place that is out of this world,” said Blue Origin launch commentator Kiah Erlich, a company official.

Schoolchildren from Ghana tuned into the launch webcast, according to Blue Origin.

The Utah-based Uplift Aerospace Inc. commissioned Boafo’s work, “Suborbital Triptych”, as part of its new art-in-space program.

The New Shepard rocket blasted off from West Texas on Blue Origin’s 17th trip to space.

The booster landed upright several minutes after liftoff.

The fully automated capsule continued to an altitude of 66 miles (105 kilometers) before parachuting down nearby.

The paintings were on triangular-shaped panels a few feet in size and detached from the capsule when the parachutes were deployed.

A company spokeswoman said they would be recovered from the desert floor.

On July 20, Blue Origin used another rocket and capsule to launch Amazon founder Bezos, his brother and two others who, at ages 82 and 18, set records for the oldest and youngest in space.

Blue Origin offered no specific date Thursday for the next passenger flight, but reported nearly $100 million in ticket sales to date.

The company — which is not divulging ticket prices — plans to alternate between tourist and research flights, sometimes with the scientists aboard.

It was the second New Shepard flight for the lunar-landing experiment, which was mounted near the top of the booster and tested lasers and other sensors meant to ensure a pinpoint moon landing for astronauts.

Also flying was equipment for turning astronauts’ space trash into gas for recycling into fuel or dumping overboard.

Pep Guardiola Plans To Quit Man City

0

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said on Wednesday (Aug 25) he plans to leave the English champions when his current contract ends in 2023 and hopes to eventually take charge of a national team.

“After seven years in this team, I think I’ll take a break,” said 50-year-old Guardiola.

“And in this process I’d like to coach a national team: South American, European… I want to have the experience of a Copa America.”

However, Guardiola is not banking on that national team being Brazil.

“A national team will be the next step, yes,” said Guardiola, speaking at an online event organised by Brazilian financial services company XP Investimentos, and quoted by ESPN Brasil.

“I think the Brazil coach will always be a Brazilian, I can’t see a foreigner coaching a team like Brazil.”

The former Barcelona player has won the Premier League title in three of his five seasons in charge of City and last term took them to the Champions League final, where they lost 1-0 to Chelsea.

Before that he won the Champions League twice with Barcelona and also lifted La Liga three times with the Catalans and as many Bundesliga crowns with Bayern Munich.

As a player he also won the old European Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup and six La Liga titles with Barca.

However, he has yet to manage a national team, or win any trophies at international level.

Wednesday’s online event also included former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Pakistani rights activist Malala Yousafzai, a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Ronaldo Agrees Personal Terms With Manchester City

0

Cristiano Ronaldo has  agreed on personal terms with Manchester City ahead of a transfer and long-awaited return to the Premier League.

Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes flew into Turin this Thursday to secure his client’s Juventus  exit and according to multiple sources he is now ready to join the Citizens.

Ronaldo kick-started the transfer rumour mill on Sunday when he requested to be left out of Juventus’ starting XI for their Serie A opener with Udinese.

Juventus vice-chairman Pavel Nedved played down speculation that this meant Ronaldo was looking to leave, but reports in Italy later emerged claiming the 36-year-old had informed his teammates he wants to join Man City.

Ronaldo’s agent, Mendes, headed to Turin on Thursday to speak with his client, and the meeting with Juventus was reportedly tense.

Manchester City are yet to make a formal offer for Ronaldo, but the player and club are said are to have shaken on a deal.

Man City had prioritised signing  Tottenham  striker Harry Kane this summer but were quoted £150million to sign the England international.

Manchester City offered Spurs £75million plus £25million in add-ons, but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy rejected the bid

With time running out in the transfer window, Kane tweeted on Wednesday: “It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve had in the last few weeks.

“I will be staying at Tottenham  this summer and will be 100 per cent focused on helping the team achieve success.”

Ronaldo’s proposed transfer will come as a shock for Manchester United fans, who were hoping the Red Devils were going to bring the Portugal international home.

Kylian Mbappe Holds Transfer Talk On Liverpool Owner’s Private Jet!

0

Kylian Mbappe is the subject of intense transfer speculation after the Paris Saint-Germain sporting director confirmed the Frenchman’s intentions to leave.

Real Madrid have already made a £140million bid for the World Cup winner, which has been rejected by PSG.

The Ligue 1 giants are holding out for a fee of around £170million, but the onus is on them to sell this summer given the fact that Mbappe is out of contract in 2022.

Mbappe has made it clear he has no intentions of signing a new contract in France.

Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo told RMC: “Kylian Mbappe wants to leave, that seems clear. If he wants to leave, we will not stop him, but on our terms.”

If PSG refuse to sell Mbappe for a fee this summer then they risk losing him on a free next season. Mbappe has previously been linked with a move to Liverpool,   with Jurgen Klopp a big fan of the striker and the Frenchman an admirer of the Champions League and Premier League-winning boss.

In fact, Mbappe was close to joining the Reds from Monaco back in 2017, with French publication claiming the forward held a two-hour meeting with Liverpool owner John W Henry.

The meeting is said to have taken place on Henry’s private jet, with the American flying Mbappe and his family over the bay of Nice and the surrounding area as they discussed the youngster’s future.

Speaking in 2018, Klopp said of Mbappe to RMC Sport: “I love him, to be honest. What a player he is and a nice lad as well, so he’s a really good kid. What a player, what a player.

“Everyone knows him since he was 16, 17, when he impressed in Monaco’s youth teams, and I saw videos of him when he was 17 and he destroyed defensive lines as he is doing now.

“He’s at an unbelievable level of consistency at that age. He’s an outstanding player, that’s clear, but he can deliver, deliver and deliver, which shows he’s really good educated boy and he knows what he is doing.”

Mbappe, meanwhile, said of Klopp in 2020: “This season, Liverpool have been a machine in the Premier League.

“They have made winning look easy but the truth is that it is never easy.

“Performances, like they have been having, don’t just happen. To be as ruthless as they have been would come from lots of hard work in training and from having a very good manager.”

Cybersecurity: Biden And Tech Bosses Talk After Ransomware Attacks

U.S President Joe Biden gathered Wednesday with business and government leaders to discuss improving cybersecurity following high-profile attacks that raised questions about the vulnerability of so-called critical infrastructure.

Biden and key cabinet officials hosted chief executives of Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft, along with leaders from the finance and utilities sectors.

The gathering comes after hacks and data breaches that have targeted a major US oil pipeline, a meatpacking company and the Microsoft Exchange email system, as well as ransomware attacks hitting various sectors.

“I’ve invited you all here today because you have the power and the capacity and responsibility, I believe, to raise the bar on cybersecurity,” Biden said.

After the talks, major tech companies, including three global leaders in cloud computing, announced training programs and investments in cybersecurity.

Microsoft, for example, plans to inject $20 billion into its cybersecurity efforts over five years, as well as “$150 million to help US government agencies upgrade protections”, according to a tweet from CEO Satya Nadella.

Amazon promised in a statement to make its security training for employees available to the general public, and Google said it will invest $10 billion over five years to help “secure the software supply chain”.

The latest attacks, which affected Microsoft email servers and the widely deployed SolarWinds security software, raise questions about protecting 16 “critical infrastructure” sectors including energy, utilities, defense, food and manufacturing.

Some analysts have called for tougher sanctions against Russia and other countries accused of harboring cybercriminals. Others have suggested more scrutiny of cryptocurrency, which is used by hackers to collect ransomware.

Transport Infrastructure: NSC, FRSC To Address Gaps At Ports

0

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Emmanuel Jime, has said the collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recorded great strides in the on-going development and operations of critical transport infrastructure, particularly the Inland Dry Ports(IDPs) and Vehicle Transit Areas (VTAs).

Jime stated this when the FRSC top echelon led by the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, paid a courtesy visit to the agency’s headquarters in Lagos on Tuesday.

The NSC boss affirmed the agency’s collaboration with the FRSC to address the issue of quality of articulated trucks used in the maritime sector to complement the road marshals’ effort to make Nigeria’s highways safer.

According to a statement by Head, Public Relations NSC, Rakiya Zubairu, the NSC boss said the council, with the mandate as Port Economic Regulator and Trade Facilitation Agency, identifies critical issues challenging the performance of the nation’s logistics sector and growth of international trade.

Jime noted that the resolutions reached at the meeting with stakeholders in May 2021 have given further impetus to the collaborative partnership between the Council and relevant government agencies and Organised Private Sector (OPS).

The pact is expected to drive the development of a structural and sustainable haulage system and standardisation of trucks as it concerns the implementation of Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS) and Inter-State Road Transit (ISRT) Scheme.

He said the other areas include a joint awareness programme for truck owners and drivers on the use of reflective tapes.

On his part, the FRSC Corps Marshal, lamented the continuous breakdown of trucks on port access roads, noting that it was one of the issues causing congestion.

MultiChoice Stock Plunges After Nigeria Ordered $2.2-Billion Tax Bill

0

South African Pay TV company MultiChoice, has been ordered by Nigeria Tax Authority (FIRS) to pay $2.2-billion in disputed taxes.

MultiChoice’s share fell 7.5% on the news, to R105,73, as investors digested the news that the sum is almost two-thirds of the firm’s market value of $3.3-billion, or R50.4-billion; almost three times the R10.4-billion ($698-million) the firm earned in operating profit in 2021.

Problems in Nigeria surfaced in early July when FIRS instructed local banks to freeze MultiChoice’s bank accounts to recover the $4.4-billion it claimed was owing. At the time, the tax authority claimed that MultiChoice had breached several agreements and that its data could not be trusted. Among other issues, it argues that MultiChoice had not accurately disclosed its number of subscribers and that the company had refused to grant access to its servers.

At the time, MultiChoice said its engagements with FIRS were ongoing and constructive, and that the matter would be resolved amicably.

This is not the first time a South African company has run up against the Nigerian authorities. In 2015, MTN was slapped with a fine of over $5-billion for not satisfactorily registering new users on its cellular network. Following extensive negotiations, this sum was reduced to $1-billion.

In 2018, the Nigerian central bank took issue with MTN, in an alleged illegal repartration of profit back to South Africa.

The disputed case will be heard by Nigeria’s tax tribunal on 23 September, provided the company pays the sum instructed, FIRS said in its statement.

Ethiopian Electric Power stated that the country has planned to build 71 power projects demanding over 40 billion USD over the next 10 years.

Ethiopian Electric CEO, Andualem Siae said the project cost is expected to be covered by private and public partnerships, the African Development Bank, the World Bank, other development partners and financiers, Ethiopian Electric Power and the Ethiopian government.

As to Andualem, negotiations have also started with the United Arab Emirates Company Amia to build the Aisha 1 wind farm project, and bidding is underway to well sort out developers for other wind power projects.

According to the CEO, construction of the Tulu Moye and Corbeti steam power projects has also been commenced by private developers.
