0

Prince Harry is enjoying life as a father of two. The 36-year-old royal welcomed his second child, Lilibet, in early June and has now been spotted out and about for the first time since then.

Harry popped up at a polo match in Aspen, Colo., on Thursday to help raise funds for his charity, Sentebale.

For the game, the Duke of Sussex wore a white and turquoise jersey top with white jodhpurs.

At the match, he announced that he’d be donating $1.5 million of the proceeds of his upcoming memoir to Sentebale.

“This is one of several donations I plan to make to charitable organizations and I’m grateful to be able to give back in this way for the children and communities who gravely need it,” he said in a statement, according to royal correspondent Omid Scobie.

Harry and Prince Seeiso Bereng Seeiso of Lesotho started Sentebale in 2006 to help “children and young people affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana.”

Researchers Help Track Growth Of Ginseng Forest Farming In Pennsylvania

There is good and bad news about ginseng collection and production in Pennsylvania, and likely much of Appalachia, according to a new study conducted by Penn State researchers.

There is good and bad news about ginseng collection and production in Pennsylvania, and likely much of Appalachia, according to a new study conducted by Penn State researchers.

On the positive side, it seems that many collectors of the endangered forest herb valued for its medicinal qualities are planting seeds in forests, conserving and supplementing remaining truly wild populations.

But on the negative side of the ledger, often they are planting seeds acquired in online purchases from places such as Wisconsin, produced in shaded field operations with inputs of fertilizer.

That germplasm threatens to weaken the gene pool of the plant, which is well adapted to thrive in Appalachian forests.

Forest farming of ginseng is growing, and this study was designed to examine trends in the growth of the secretive ginseng industry in Pennsylvania and how best to support and track ginseng forest farming, noted Eric Burkhart, associate teaching professor of ecosystem science and management in the College of Agricultural Sciences, who led the research.

A ginseng “garden” in a private forest plot is shown, growing in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Forest farming of the endangered forest herb, valued for its medicinal qualities, is becoming much more common.

Rivers, Largest Global Source Of Mercury In Oceans – Study

0

The presence of mercury in the world’s oceans has ramifications for human health and wildlife, especially in coastal areas where the majority of fishing takes place.

The presence of mercury in the world’s oceans has ramifications for human health and wildlife, especially in coastal areas where the majority of fishing takes place.

But while models evaluating sources of mercury in the oceans have focused on mercury deposited directly from the atmosphere, a new study led by Peter Raymond, professor of ecosystem ecology at the Yale School of the Environment and published in Nature Geoscience shows that rivers are actually the main source of the toxic heavy metal along the world’s coasts.

“It kind of rewires the global mercury cycle,” Raymond says. Previously, it was believed that most mercury in the open ocean was deposited there from the atmosphere, and then made its way into coastal areas.

But now it appears that most mercury flows into the coastal ocean areas from rivers, and from there it moves out into the open ocean.

“Currently, policymakers mainly focus on controlling atmospheric emission and deposition of mercury, while the contribution of river mercury to coastal oceans is not well understood,” says Maodian Liu, a postdoctoral fellow in Raymond’s lab.

He says that the new findings underscore the importance of limiting the mercury that makes its way into rivers.

Nigeria’s Electoral Commission Affirms Date For Final List Of Candidates In Anambra Election

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed the date for the release of the final list of candidates who will partake in the Anambra governorship election holding on November 6, 2021.

At a meeting on Thursday, the Commission agreed to publish the final list on October 7.

According to a communique by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, the date is the same one contained in the timetable and schedule of activities for the election, which was released earlier.

Okoye said the timetable and schedule of activities approved by the Commission on January 18, 2021, provides for the withdrawal/substitution of candidates in line with Sec. 35 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

Accordingly, by the deadline of July 30 fixed by the Commission, seven governorship and 11 deputy governorship candidates were substituted by 11 out of 18 political parties.

In addition to this, the Commission was served with the judgement of the Court of Appeal (Kano Division) which set aside the judgement of the High Court of Jigawa State on the leadership of All Progressives Grand Alliance and the nomination of its candidates for the Anambra Governorship election.

As a result of the substitutions and court judgements, the Commission has published an updated list of candidates on its website and will publish the final list on October 7.

Meanwhile, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu has said that the electoral umpire will continue to deepen the use of technology in conducting elections across the country.

Professor Yakubu made the comment while speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day retreat for officers of the commission in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

According to him, INEC does not need new laws to deploy certain technologies.

Based on that, he said the Commission will be deploying “new and innovative” technology for the Anambra poll.

“We may have different tools, but they all work towards achieving one and the same goal,” he said.

“There are some activities, some aspects of technology that we have deployed that the laws are already adequate for us to continue to deploy these tools.

“We don’t need any specific provisions of law, for instance, to deploy the EMSC (Election Monitoring and Support Centre).”

His comment comes weeks after the National Assembly passed the Electoral Act amendment bill amid sharp divisions over whether the electronic transmission of election results should be sacrosanct.
