0

The parlement in the Democratic Republic of Congo has voted to extend the state of urgence in Ituri and North Kivu – the two eastern provinces that have been rocked by insecurity.

The state of emergency imposed by President Félix Tshisekedi on 6 May has been extended six times now.

Out of 335 MPs, 334 voted in favour while one abstained.

Military administrations have replaced the civilian authorities to curb insecurity in the provinces where several attacks carried out by rebels have left thousands dead.

The violence has been on the increase despite the presence of thousands of UN peacekeepers.

Some of the attacks have been blamed on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – one of the dozens of armed groups operating there.

The eastern provinces have aussi seen violence between ethnic groups.

The UN’s migration agency has called for a “rapid expansion” of humanitarian aid and more funding for operations in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.

“Significant additional funding is needed to cover life-saving humanitarian needs and work towards lasting solutions,
especially before the next rainy and cyclone season in December,” he said. The IOM head visited the

district of Metuge, which hosts about 125,000 people of the more than 800,000 who have been displaced since the end of 2017.The IOM said it had provided assistance to more than 600,000

people in Cabo Delgado between January and July, including through shelter construction or reconstruction support and providing household items. However, the

organisation says its operations are underfunded. It estimates it needs $58m (£42m) to support emergency and post-crisis efforts.Cabo Delgado province has been the scene of

Uprising, Terrorism In Nigeria, Result Of Unemployed Youths -Ex President Obasanjo

1

Ex President Olusegun Obasanjo attributed the uprising and terrorism in the country partly to large armies of unemployed youths who were being recruited into violent extremist groups and criminal gangs

Speaking at the public presentation of the maiden edition of the Africa Progress Group (APG) report, on Tuesday in Lagos.

Obasanjo, who is chairman of the APG, said if Africa’s growing population, is managed properly, it will yield huge dividends for national and regional development.

According to him, providing basic amenities for the country’s ever-increasing population has become a big challenge, a situation that has made many of our youths to be used as tools for crimes across the country.

He said, “Three clusters of questions pop up in my mind any time the scary thoughts of the ever-increasing population kept me awake at night. The first cluster is: how are we going to feed this exploding population?

“Only a few days ago, the alarm was raised about imminent food crisis in Nigeria. Similar alarm bells have been ringing with increasing stridency all over Africa. How are we going to house them; educate them, provide them with health security and other variants of human security?

“The second cluster of questions is: how do we keep this keg of gunpowder of the large army of unemployed youth from exploding? How do we keep them from enlisting in violent extremist groups and gangs of kidnappers? The third cluster of questions is: how can Africa attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063 in a turbulent sea of exploding, not-well-managed populations?

“While these clusters of questions are frightening, they would appear to have an elegantly simple solution — political will and action to make population an asset. This is the master key of a sort. I am sure you noticed that this ‘key’ has two elements — the will and the action.”

The report, ‘Population As Asset Responsiveness Index (PARI),’ is expected to be a stimulus for African countries to show more responsiveness to making their populations more of an asset than a burden.

The UN health agency said on Tuesday that a second suspected case of infection by the deadly Ebola virus have been detected in Ivory Coast, expressing fear of contagion.

World Health Organisation spokesman, Tarik Jasarevic said that as of Monday, there had been one confirmed and one suspected case, with nine contacts identified so far. No deaths have been reported.

He said the W.H.O was “very concerned” about the ability of the virus to spread in the West African country’s economic hub Abidjan, with a population of more than four million.

The confirmed case has been identified as an 18-year-old from Guinea who travelled overland, arriving in Abidjan last Wednesday aboard a bus. When she left Guinea, she was already exhibiting symptoms that continued to intensify.

She was admitted to a hospital on Thursday with a fever and is currently receiving treatment.

“Preliminary investigations and genomic sequencing to identify the strain show that it is likely the Zaire strain of the virus,” Jasarevic said. “Further investigations are required to confirm these early results.”

Cristiano Ronaldo: Real Madrid Manager Carlo Ancelotti Says There Will Be No Reunion

0

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed speculation linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a return to the club.

The Juventus forward, 36, has 10 months remaining on his contract in Turin and has been linked with Real,

Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

But in a rare move, Ancelotti responded to the rumours in a tweet on Tuesday.

“Cristiano is a Real Madrid legend and he has all my love and respect. I have never considered signing him. We look forward. #HalaMadrid,” he wrote.

Ancelotti’s tweet appears to have been prompted by a report by Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, which claimed on Monday night that a reunion between Real and Ronaldo was a possibility, three years after he left the club to sign for Juventus in a 99.2m deal.

Ronaldo joined Real from Manchester United in July 2009 and went on to score a club record 450 goals in 438 games over the following nine seasons.

In his time with Los Blancos, Ronaldo also won four Champions League trophies and two La Liga titles. One of those Champions League trophies was won under the guidance of Ancelotti, during the Italian’s previous spell in charge.

Speculation over Ronaldo’s future has intensified in the days since great rival Lionel Messi left Barcelona and joined PSG on a two year deal.
