Ministry of Finance Partners Film Corporation On Job Creation

0

The Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning has expressed its readiness to partner with the Nigeria Film Corporation (NFC) to create job opportunities for unemployed Nigerian youths.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed, said this on Tuesday while receiving a report on the development of the film industry at the Nigeria Film Corporation in Jos.

The Minister, represented by the Director, Economic Growth Department, Mr Aso Patrick said the project was in partnership with the NFC and the Agencie Francaise de Developpement of France (AFD).

“This partnership is aimed at understanding the film industry and see its potential and how government can leverage on it to strengthen the industry and churn out people who will create and develop films.

“With the country’s large population of youths, the film industry would provide jobs for the youths, the film industry globally is capable of creating jobs,” the minister said.

She expressed regret that the country graduated a lot of youths each year who had nothing to do.

According to the minister, the government alone cannot create jobs for all unemployed youths, hence the partnership with the AFD and other critical stakeholders.

The Managing Director, NFC, Dr Chidia Maduekwe, said that the film industry was capable of lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

He said the creative industry had created jobs for 20 million Nigerians from the 100 million the government was targeting to lift out of poverty.

“We have taken about 20 million out of poverty, and with this partnership, we can do more, Maduekwe said.

He said that more would be done by involving more hands on the digital economy innovations as well as breaking frontiers which hitherto had been dormant.

Maduekwe described Nigeria as a country with a lot of diversity, adding that many players were coming into the country making it the creative capital of the world.

A film entrepreneur, Mr Madu Chukwuendu, called for more planning using data collection while urging stakeholders to do more.

Chukwuendu, who said that government could only do its best, added that the sector needed to do their part by lobbying effectively to get adequate attention from government and other stakeholders.

Haiti chooses judge to probe president’s assassination

0

After weeks of struggling to fill the job, a senior magistrate in Haiti on Monday announced that a judge has been named to lead the probe into the assassination of president Jovenel Moise.

The dean of the Court of First Instance in Port-au-Prince, Bernard Saint-Vil, said that Judge Mathieu Chanlatte was chosen for the job.

Chanlatte “will not be intimidated,” said Jean Wilner Morin, president of the National Association of Haitian Magistrates.

A hit team burst into the presidential residence on July 7 and shot Moise dead. His wife Martine was wounded but survived.

Human rights defender Pierre Esperance said he hoped that Chanlatte would treat the case “with the law as a compass, without falling into political persecution.”

Minister of Justice and Public Security Rockefeller Vincent said that his ministry would take all measures necessary to guarantee the safety of judges as well as courtroom evidence.

Police say they have arrested 44 people in connection with the killing, including 12 Haitian police officers, 18 Colombians who were allegedly part of the commando team, and two Americans of Haitian descent.

Minister sets up panel to probe disqualification of 10 Nigerian athletes in Tokyo

0

Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, has set up a panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disqualification of 10 Nigerian athletes at the just concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Team Nigeria finished in the 74th position on the overall table and sixth best in Africa with a silver and a bronze medal at the end of the Games.

The country’s participation was nearly marred by controversies arising from disqualification of athletes over non-compliance with anti-doing rules and the provisional suspension placed on Nigeria’s top sprinter, Blessing Okagbare.

AMCON To Take Over Dangote Refinery As Liabilities Swell

0

Africa’s biggest oil refinery and the world’s largest single-train facility, Dangote Oil Refinery may run into a deep financial crisis from rapidly increasing interests amounting to millions of dollars indicating a possible takeover of the  project by the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

Hope Of Nigeria’s Oil Sector Hangs In The Balance?

After many years of exporting crude oil abroad to be refined with refineries in the country in a comatose state, a latest development greeted Nigerians with so much displeasure as the expected game changer in the oil and gas sector is faced with a daunting challenge.

According to the management of Dangote group Africa’s largest oil refinery will not be finished until the end of 2020 due to problems importing steel and other equipment.

8 months into 2021 the story hasn’t changed much, reports say the world’s largest single-train facility, Dangote oil refinery may run into a deep financial crisis from rapidly increasing interests amounting to millions of dollars indicating a possible takeover of the  project by the assets management corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

Dangote Oil Refinery, a 650,000 barrels per day (BPD) integrated refinery project under construction in the Lekki Free Zone, Lagos, Nigeria, was expected to commence production in 2016 with $3.3billion financing secured in 2013.

With the refinery now projected to commence operations in 2025, Dangote Group’s indebtedness to the financial institutions is estimated to hit $8.4billion by 2025. Presently, this debt burden has risen to 7billion dollars with debt servicing of almost 700million dollars per annum.

The completion date of the refinery had been moved eight times. Whilst some might say this is not in the character for Dangote Industries and their numerous projects across different sectors, the problem is deeply rooted.

A contractor at the delayed refinery project, speaking under the condition of anonymity, said that poor planning, underpayment of contractors, and a lack of proper project management with over 40 contractors on site has led to most of the delays. He also added that of the 40, none is willing to commission as there is no clear delegation of duty and over-decentralization leading to absolute chaos.

With these incessant delays, some financing banks are already calling in their loans amid fears of liquidity crisis, while others are elated by the guarantee of huge interests to be recouped as soon as the refinery comes on stream.

In July 2017, major structural construction began, and Dangote estimated that the refinery would be mechanically complete in late 2019 and commissioned in early 2020. Experts, however, posit that the construction would likely  take at least twice as long as Dangote publicly stated, with refining capability not likely to be achieved until 2025.

Meanwhile, last week the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, reiterated that Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the acquisition of 20 per cent minority stakes by the NNPC in the Dangote Petroleum and Petro-Chemical Refinery.

Sylva, while briefing State House correspondents after the virtual FEC meeting presided by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, said that the acquisition was in the sum of $2.76 billion.

“The Executive Council also approved the acquisition of 20 percent minority stakes by the NNPC in the Dangote Petroleum and Petro-Chemical Refineries in the sum of $2.76 billion,” he said.

This development has been described by industry observers as strange because $2.76 billion falls short of 20 percent of the Dangote project valued by the sponsor at $16 billion. Using the $16billion value, 20 percent should be $3.2billion and analysts have expressed dissatisfaction at the disparity in the project’s value and NNPC’s funding.

Brent Oil Up 1.22% After Three-Week Low

0

International benchmark Brent crude traded at $69.88 at 0656 GMT on Tuesday, posting a 1.22% rise from Monday when trade closed at $69.04 per barrel.

Brent picked up after seeing three-week lows that saw oil drop to as low as $67.60 on Monday.

American benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) traded at $67.47 at the same time on Tuesday, increasing by 1.49% relative to $66.48 a barrel on Monday.

Investors and sector players are looking to the US, as the country will release oil supply data from the American Petroleum Institute and vote on the passage of a $1 trillion infrastructure bill later in the day.

If the $1 trillion infrastructure bill is passed, it could boost the economy and demand for oil products.

G20 Members Hit $269B In Fossil Fuel Investments During Pandemic

0

G20 countries have allocated more funds in support of fossil fuels than clean energy since the start of the pandemic in early 2020, according to statistics from Energy Policy Tracker, a non-profit research initiative.

The world’s largest economies have committed at least $657.79 billion to support various energy sources through new or revised policies, the study revealed.

Out of this funding, $296.45 billion has been assigned to support fossil fuel energy, while the budget for clean energy was much less at $227.21 billion.

The research is based on different energy sources, broken down into categories specifying criteria on whether it has any environmental conditionality attached. The categories are “fossil unconditional”; “fossil conditional”; “clean unconditional”; “clean conditional”, and “other energy”.

The research company showed that the largest economies spent at least $247.41 billion on unconditional fossil fuels, which include oil, gas, coal, grey hydrogen, or fossil fuel-based electricity that have no climate targets or additional pollution reduction requirements.

However, it revealed that just $49.03 billion was allocated for conditional fossil fuels that set some climate targets.

While the money spent for unconditional clean energy that produces low-carbon and has negligible impacts on the environment if implemented with appropriate safeguards was $53.81 billion, the funds for conditional clean energy amounted to $170.40 billion.

The policies for unconditional clean energy support energy efficiency and renewable energy from naturally replenished resources such as sunlight, wind, small hydropower, rain, tides, and geothermal heat.

Nigeria called it “an egregious act of international delinquency by the Indonesian state”.

It vowed to review bilateral relations with the south-east Asian nation.

The video showed one of the officials putting his hand on the diplomat’s head and pushing it back against a seat.

Between yells of protest, Mr Ibrahim repeated: “I can’t breathe.”

Mr Ibrahim had been detained on a street in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
