Guinea Records First Case Of Marburg Virus

0

The first case of Marburg virus has been confirmed in West Africa after a man died of the haemorrhagic fever disease in Guinea.

This is the first time Marburg, a highly infectious disease that causes haemorrhagic fever, has been identified in the country, and in West Africa.

The virus, which belongs to the same family as Ebola, spreads from human to human through bodily fluids and can have a fatality rate of up to 88%.

Symptoms include a high fever and muscle pain, but some patients later suffer bleeding from their eyes and ears.

After the male patient sought treatment and died in Gueckedou, the case was confirmed by a laboratory in Guinea and again by the Institute Pasteur in nearby Senegal.

Contact tracing is under way, according to the World Health Organization (W.H.O).

The patient had sought treatment at a local clinic in Koundou area of Gueckedou, where a medical investigation team had been dispatched to probe his worsening symptoms.

“We applaud the alertness and the quick investigative action by Guinea’s health workers. The potential for the Marburg virus to spread far and wide means we need to stop it in its tracks,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organisation Regional Director for Africa.

“We are working with the health authorities to implement a swift response that builds on Guinea’s past experience and expertise in managing Ebola, which is transmitted in a similar way,” Moeti said.

Gueckedou, where Marburg has been confirmed, is also the same region where cases of the 2021 Ebola outbreak in Guinea as well as the 2014–2016 West Africa outbreak were initially detected.

The WHO in a press statement says efforts are underway to find the people who may have been in contact with the patient.

“As the disease is appearing for the first time in the country, health authorities are launching public education and community mobilisation to raise awareness and galvanise support to help curb widespread infection.

“An initial team of 10 WHO experts, including epidemiologists and socio-anthropologists is on the ground helping to investigate the case and supporting the national health authorities to swiftly step up emergency response, including risk assessment, disease surveillance, community mobilisation, testing, clinical care, infection prevention as well as logistical support.

“Cross-border surveillance is also being enhanced to quickly detect any cases, with neighbouring countries on alert. The Ebola control systems in place in Guinea and in neighbouring countries are proving crucial to the emergency response to the Marburg virus,” the statement read in part.

Marburg is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads among humans through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, surfaces and materials.

Illness begins abruptly, with high fever, severe headache and malaise. Many patients develop severe haemorrhagic signs within seven days. Case fatality rates have varied from 24 percent to 88 percent in past outbreaks depending on virus strain and case management.

“Although there are no vaccines or antiviral treatments approved to treat the virus, supportive care – rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids – and treatment of specific symptoms, improves survival. A range of potential treatments, including blood products, immune therapies and drug therapies, are being evaluated.

“In Africa, previous outbreaks and sporadic cases have been reported in Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda,” WHO said.

Allyson Felix Becomes Most Decorated U.S. Track Athlete In Olympic History With 11 Medals

With the United States’ 4×400 women’s relay gold medal win on Saturday, Allyson Felix who broke Carl Lewis’ record becomes the most decorated U.S. track athlete in Olympic history. The feat is the culmination of a career spanning over a decade, the first medal being awarded in the 200-meter final at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Felix has made a name for herself on and off of the field of play, being a fierce advocate for maternity rights. In November 2018, she gave birth to her daughter, Camryn, after being diagnosed with severe preeclampsia. The illness is a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication and led to Felix undergoing an emergency c-section.

As for the future, Felix told USA TODAY she intends to retire before the 2024 Paris Summer Games, so Tokyo looked to be her final Olympic hurrah. The hurrah is now capped with a historic record.

FSU Legend Bobby Bowden Dies At 91; Legacy Far More About Faith Than Football

0

Bobby Bowden, the Hall of Fame football coach who built Florida State University into a dynasty and who was never shy about discussing his Christian faith, died Aug. 8. He was 91.

Bowden coached Florida State from 1976 to 2009, winning two national championships and 12 conference titles, and also tallying a record 14 consecutive seasons finishing in the Associated Press Top 5. His 389 on-the-field victories ranked second all-time among major college coaches. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

When Bowden arrived in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1976, the program had won only four games over the previous three seasons.

But Bowden’s off-the-field character is what many fans will remember. He exhibited a folksy wit and warm charm to players and media members alike. He often spoke in churches and at faith-based events – both before and after retirement.

“If we don’t go out and talk about Jesus, how is the world going to know?” Bowden said this year during the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting. He appeared at the SBC alongside former coach Mark Richt, who he helped lead to Christ during the 1980s.

Coaches, he said, can have a major impact on a player’s life.

“Rev. Billy Graham said, ‘A coach can influence more people in a year than a preacher can in a lifetime,'” he said in 2017. “And, for the most part, I agree with that. But it can be a good or bad influence.”

In 2001, he recorded a video for an evangelistic event hosted by Franklin Graham.

“I was 23 years of age, I had finished college and finished graduate school when I finally realized that I’m saved through grace and not by any way that I could earn it,” Bowden said in the video. “… Once you accept that grace and recognize it and make yourself available to Christ … then He will lead you.”

In 2017, Bowden co-wrote a book and appeared in a documentary discussing his faith-centric view of football. Both were called The Bowden Dynasty.

Former Florida State quarterback Danny Kanell tweeted of Bowden’s success, “Coach Bowden’s legacy is far more about his faith than his football career.”

NACA Releases New Modes of HIV Transmission in Nigeria

0

The National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA), says a new research “Estimating Modes of HIV Transmission in Nigeria”, has identified never married adults and key population as increasing HIV rates in Nigeria.

The Director General of the agency, Dr. Gambo Aliyu, disclosed the statistics in Abuja.

He said that the research gives estimates of where new HIV infections are occurring and can aid prevention planning and focus efforts where they will be most effective.

“The largest number of new infections in the adult population is estimated to occur among Never Married Females and Never Married Males. The next largest number of new infections occurs among Female Sex Workers and Men who have Sex with Men. These four population groups account for about 91% of all new infections among adults. Key populations (FSW, MSM, PWID) are estimated to account for about 11% of new infections although they represent less than 2% of the total population. New child infections due to mother-to-child transmission represent the second largest source new infection accounting for 22% of all new infections. In many states new child infections account for an even larger proportion, up to 50%,” Dr Aliyu said.

He said that the distribution of new infections varies by state.

“However, a large proportion of new infections generally occur among never married individuals or in Sero-concordant negative couples. Overall, young people and Female Sex Workers appear to be playing an important role in the dynamics of the incidence.

“A study of formation and dissolution of partnerships among these groups may help understanding this dynamic. Mother to-child transmission represents a large source of new infections nationally and is the largest source in several states. Most of those women who do attend ANC get tested for HIV but over 60% of pregnant women do not attend ANC. Increasing ANC attendance would have benefits not only for reducing HIV transmission,” He said.

According to Dr. Aliyu, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), in collaboration with development partners, has been working tirelessly in coming up with strategies to halt the spread of the HIV virus and sustain the epidemic.

“To this end, the Mode of Transmission Study (MOT), which focuses on identifying the sources of new HIV infections in the country and was first conducted in 2009, was recently repeated using an updated model known as the Incidence Pattern Model. This was done to support efforts geared towards preventing new HIV infections using information that was accurate and clearly show where new infections are occurring and among which population group“. He noted.

The Director General also said that it was noteworthy to state that data from the 2018 Nigeria AIDS Indicator Impact Survey (NAIIS) supplied most of the information on population size and characteristics used for the study. The Key population (KP) size, prevalence rate for Key Populations and the number of new infections by State spread were estimated from the recent KP study.

Findings

The study found that the largest number of new infections in the adult population is occurring among Never Married Females and Never Married Males (i.e. Young people). The next largest number of new infections occurs among Female Sex Workers and Men who have Sex with Men. These four population groups account for about 91% of all new infections among adults.

Key populations which represent less than 2% of the total population account for about 11% of new infections. Child infections due to mother-to-child transmission represent the second- largest source of new infection accounting for 22% of all new infections. In many states, child infections account for an even larger proportion, up to 50%.

He noted that though Nigeria is working hard to close these gaps, the findings of the study will further help NACA and partners redirect resources for maximum yields as they look forward to attaining epidemic control with more targeted interventions.

Policy implications

“The policy implications are that efforts will be made to target the following population groups:

The never married population which is the largest source of new infections and are mostly between the ages of 17 to 34 for females and 19-31 for men. Special efforts are needed to be made to reach this population in schools, workplaces, gathering spots and through social media.

The new infections through newborns due to low coverage of PMTCT. Efforts will be targeted at encouraging women to attend ANC especially in high prevalence states.

Increased efforts especially for the highest risk FSW and MSM which has shown that even though the population is small, prevalence remains high among sex workers and MSM in spite of high levels of reported condom use.

The survey also announced a decrease of HIV prevalence amongst married couples in Nigeria while noting that Mother to Child Transmission stands at 22%.

How to lose Weight with intermittent fasting

0

How would you feel if you were told you could drop pounds by watching what you eat only a couple of days a week, awesome right? That’s the logic behind intermittent fasting, a weight loss approach that’s become more popular over the past few years.

There are different versions, but the general idea for all of them is that you eat normally some days of the week and drastically reduce your calories on other days.

Some plans encourage you to skip food entirely for up to 24 or 36 hours at a time. On others, such as “Every Other Day Diet” and the “5:2 Fast Diet” you can have some food but only get about one fourth of your regular calories.

Some research shows that intermittent fasting works – at least in the short term. In some studies, people who followed this diet did lose weight and also had a decrease in some of the markers that show inflammation.

Fasting puts your cells under a mild stress. Scientists think that the process of responding to this stress, on your low-calorie days, strengthens cells’ ability to deal with stress and potentially fight off some diseases.

What to Eat and What Not

You can eat mostly what you want on days when you don’t fast. But to lose weight and get the nutrients you need, you should stick to healthy foods and limit treats like dessert and processed foods.

On fasting days, you’ll eat very little food or none at all.

For example, the “Every Other Day Diet” says to eat no more than 500 calories during each fast day.

Another program called the 5:2 Fast Diet involves eating 5 days a week and fasting for the other 2 days, when women can get no more than 500 calories and men no more than 600. That’s a quarter of the amount you likely eat on the days when you don’t fast. Whether you eat those calories in one sitting or spread them across micro-meals throughout the day is up to you.

However, it’s not easy to skip most of your calories a few days a week and rely mostly on water, coffee, and tea to keep you feeling full. You’ll need a balanced meal plan to eat in moderation on your so-called “feast” days, despite their name. You can indulge in a treat occasionally, but that’s about it if you want to see results.

Cooking and shopping: You can continue your regular cooking and shopping, as long as you stick to mostly healthy foods. Packaged food and meals are a no no

Exercise:

How much you exercise is up to you. But obviously, you’re not going to have a lot of energy for that on your fasting days. The creators of the ‘Every Other Day diet studied people doing cardiovascular exercise (like biking) while on the alternate-day fasting plan and found that they were able to maintain muscle mass while fasting.

How does it work?

You choose what food you eat, so you can make it work with food restrictions. Whether you’re vegetarian or vegan, high- or low-carb, avoiding fat, etc. But it’s worth noting that you could have side effects like fatigue, weakness, and headaches.

You also don’t need none beyond your shopping. In fact, because you will eat much less 2 to 4 days per week, your grocery costs should go down.

Most of the intermittent fasting diets recommend cutting back to 500-600 calories on fasting days. In general, for many people this would be medically safer and easier than not eating at all on those days.

Remember to drink enough on fasting days to prevent dehydration. And you’ll need to eat a healthy diet on days that you don’t fast.

Verdict

Several studies looking at intermittent fasting diets do show at least short-term weight loss after following the diet for several weeks. But what’s not clear is, if the weight loss will last over a longer time.

However, Following an intermittent fasting diet that recommends eating 500-600 calories on fasting days may work and be healthy for some people.

The tripartite meeting conveyed by the House of Representatives has constituted a sub-committee to fashion out ways to resolve the grey areas in the demands of the striking Residents Doctors in the country.

This was one of the resolutions of the meeting between the House of Representatives Committee on Health Services, Members of the Executive and the Residents Doctors Association of Nigeria, aimed at ending the strike that cripples health care services for Nigerians.

The committee comprised of the Head of Service of the Federation, Committee of Chief Medical Directors CMDs of Federal Health Institutions and the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Special Duties to find lasting solutions to industrial action.

Stakeholders at the meeting called for a National Health Workforce Plan to reduce the recurring industrial action by the workers in the Health Sector.

Issues of casualization or locum arrangement in the health sector, difficulties in obtaining clearance and waivers to replace existing medical officers as well as meeting all agreements reached between the government and the striking doctors,

In a presentation to the stakeholders meeting with the striking doctors and lawmakers, President of NARD Dr. Okhupihesuyi Uyilawa said that the federal government should jettison the circular that prescribed a new scheme of service for doctors different from other government employees.

The NARD also insisted that the backlog arrears of salaries of its members totaling over N5.5 billion being held by the Ministry of Health must be paid to its members before the ongoing strike by the association can be put to hold.

The meeting however suggested easing off the replacement processes and other bureaucracy to ensure effective and efficient health services to Nigerians.

The Ministry of Health through the State Minister Dr. Olorunmimbe Mamora described as unfair blaming the Federal Government for an action or inaction of States, being one of the three tiers of government.

Chairman House Committee on Health Services, Dr. Tanko Sununu, pledged that though the Federal Government has no power over States Affairs, it will continue to ensure all grievances are resolved and Nigerians enjoyed stable and efficient Health Services.

The Director-General Budget Office, Mr. Ben Ekabueze justifies some of the administrative measures taken, which he said were to regulate excesses of the Managers of the Federal Health Institutions.

Mr. Akabueze said that there is a public wage advance in the Service Wide Vote of the 2020 budget that takes care of the Doctor’s salary arrears and that in the last two years there was budget approval for the recruitment of medical doctors for 70 health institutions.

The committee members had insisted at the meeting that the absence of services of doctors at the nation’s health institutions constitute great havoc to the healthcare needs of the entire citizenry.

The meeting which continues Tuesday also has in attendance the Minister of Health Dr. Osagie Ehanire, Nigerian National Medical Association, and Chief Medical Directors of the University Teaching Hospitals and Federal Medical Centres.

Women Filmmakers Denounce Spanish Cinema Prize For Depp

0

Spain’s leading group of women filmmakers on Tuesday condemned the San Sebastian film festival’s decision to award Johnny Depp its highest honor, saying it gave the international event a bad name after a British judge ruled last year that allegations of domestic violence against the actor were “substantially correct”.

Cristina Andreu, the President of Spain’s Association of Female Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media, said she was “very surprised” by the decision, announced Monday, to award Depp the Donostia Award at the festival’s 69th edition next month. The award is the event’s top prize and aims to honor lifetime achievement.

“This speaks very badly of the festival and its leadership, and transmits a terrible message to the public: ‘It doesn’t matter if you are an abuser as long as you are a good actor’,” Andreu said.

The association, which has close links to the San Sebastian festival, was “studying next steps,” she added.

The San Sebastian International Film Festival, held in northern Spain, takes place Sept. 17-25 this year. Depp is expected to receive the award in person on Sept. 22, in what will be his third appearance at the event.

Last year, Depp lost a libel case against a British newspaper that accused him of domestic violence, with a judge ruling the allegations were “substantially correct.” In March, a British court refused Depp permission to appeal the ruling that he assaulted his former wife, Amber Heard, saying his attempt to overturn the decision had “no real prospect of success.”

Depp also is suing Heard for $50 million in Virginia over a Washington Post op-ed essay that she wrote about domestic violence. The trial in that case was recently delayed until April 2022.

Temple Production Backs Africa’s First 2D Animated Film ‘The Passport Of Mallam Illia’

0

Temple Production has confirmed a new partnership with Magic Carpet Studios on the production of ‘The Passport of Mallam Illia’, Africa’s first indigenous 2D animated film.

The movie is an adaptation based upon the best-selling classic novel written by the late celebrated writer Cyprian Ekwensi in 1960.

Announcing the new partnership, Temple Production boss Nwakaego Boyo shared: “The chance to tell real African stories, animation a medium I have always been interested in, and the opportunity to share this valuable source of historical fiction with young audiences, as well as others who have had the opportunity to read this book was too good to pass up.

We at Temple Productions are excited to join the group of investors and talented team of @magiccarpet_studios to bring you this epic tale… “

Speaking on the huge budget production, Magic Carpet Studio CEO Ferdy Ladi Adimefe revealed:

“The book was chosen due to its significance in the African literary space; a short, easy-to-digest, young adult book, covering the pre-independence realities of what is now Northern Nigeria but was then the Northern emirate in a pre-colonial era…If you see the quality of the teaser we put out, you realize we don’t want to tell a domestic story, but a global story and this has the recipe.”

The first teaser for the animated film debuted in 2018 starring Sadiq Daba, Toyin Oshinaike, Dija among others.

Written in 1948 and published in 1960, ‘The Passport of Mallam Ilia’ follows a man, Ilia, who is seeking revenge for the death of his wife, Zarah, at the hands of a Mallam Usman.
